MARCH 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the February 2024 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10908479/february-2024-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until March 1, 2024 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

Still not setting a monthly goal. Just chipping away at my 1200 miles for the year.11

My March target is to get as close as I can to my February mileage so I am aiming for ca. 280km. However, there is a two week Easter school holiday, so I will probably not be able to run as much or as long, so maybe 250km will be more realistic. Also, the main priority is getting ready for my mid-April marathon, so if I'm feeling too fatigued with the training, I will make adjustments. Additionally I want to continue with my strength training and injury prevention exercises , which for some reason are usually the first thing to be dropped when I have a busy schedule. I also would like to get one 20 miler (32.18km) in towards the end of the month.9
-
I’m in! I would love to get back to running (well jogging). It is a busy month for me especially the last couple of weeks, plus I am just starting my running journey again so I will set a moderate goal. I think I would like to run 30km this month.9

I will try to run as much as I can, but at least a km a day on average. Hopefully this will motivate me to finally get back to running 🏃♀️🤗🤗

Morning all.
March... Riiiiighttttt...
Due a rest day (or two!) imminently... and I go on foreign trip #1 towards the end of the month so will lose a couple of days flying and on travels.
With that in mind, gonna go for 130 Miles again.

400 miles is target!12

Looking for 165 miles in March, at least half of which should be on the trails.
After a very meager end to 2023 where I didn't run for 11 weeks, including the last 7 weeks, 2024 is looking much better. After my run tonight I'll have my highest monthly total since May of 2022.
The only thing keeping March from being my highest month ever is work. My coworker is dialing down his work due to health issues and since he and I share the same client, I "get" to pick up the slack, along with a few others in the department. I was really hoping to keep it to 3 days a week this summer but that's in jeopardy now. Retirement can't come too soon...2025 perhaps.
I'm hoping to pop in here more often as I do find it helps with my motivation.12 -
Looked at my 10K training schedule for March and see that I’ll be getting close to 60 miles for the month, so here it goes….
60 Miles10 -
First runs on the board for March, or rather, first run logged for March (a cricketing reference that most won’t get). Feeling good today. Aches and pains behaved. Run felt the easiest it’s been in months. Hooray.8

I'm in for 30 for March. Hoping I can extend it like I did in February but it just depends on what treatments the doctors have in store for me. Have an appointment tomorrow so may need to adjust afterwards.
@ContraryMaryMary - Hooray for an easy great feeling run to start the month!

Gotta say, not a fan of the daily suggested workouts in the buildup to a race. First, they are time based. I don't love this because I plan my routes based on mileage. I found myself having to run longer to get home or adding on little out and backs near my house to finish up pretty frequently. Also, Garmin loves a sprint workout, like 15-30 sec sprints. I barely get up to speed and it's time to rest again. I missed the tempo runs that seem to be a staple in a lot of other plans. I find regular workouts at my race pace are really helpful and Garmin never had me do that style of workout.
I do like having the widget with my upcoming race on it. I liked seeing the countdown and watching the estimated time drop as I progressed through training.
I think moving forward, I'll keep the widget and turn off the daily suggestions during training blocks. I might use them some during down times, like summer, just to keep from getting in a rut of doing the same runs over and over.8 -
Additionally I want to continue with my strength training and injury prevention exercises , which for some reason are usually the first thing to be dropped when I have a busy schedule.
Yep, me too. I can find lots of good reasons not to do injury prevention!!
Welcome @Aquarian!Retirement can't come too soon...2025 perhaps.
I'm hoping to pop in here more often as I do find it helps with my motivation.
Happy to have you back @7lenny7! I've got several more years before retirement but I feel the same way. Can't come soon enough!3 -
I'm in for March. 85 miles4

Welcome @Aquarian . This is a great group to be a part of. Jump right in to the conversations.
I hope work isn't too much of a deterrent to your running @7lenny7 . Sounds like you are doing great so far in 2024!
Nice run to start March @ContraryMaryMary .
I hope you get good news from your doctor tomorrow @shanaber .
Great goals everyone.
I am still trying to decide on my goal. I know I need to lose a bit of the weight I have gained from stress eating and just not paying attention to what I put in my mouth. Today, I looked through my fitness diary back in 2019-2020, when I got to my lowest weight, to see how I did it. I was running so much faster and longer AND I was eating more bigger lunches and smaller dinners. I was actually surprised. I know a lot has happened since then and I shouldn't compare then to now, but I sure would like to get back to some of those paces for longer runs. I'm beginning to think trying the 80/20 running and running by HR may not be the best thing for me. It lets me be lazy.
That being said, I will tentatively set my goal for 85 miles. I started to say 60 miles, but that is a cop out. I CAN do 85. I just need to get myself motivated again.9 -
March goal - 30km
March 1 Run 3km8 -
Morning everyone!
Got in 4.76M (at 09"33).
No rest day yet, clearly!
Happy Friday all.12 -

@ContraryMaryMary LOL love it! Rubbing off on you already! LOL

Though your boys making a meal of it against the Aussies! Kane run out for 0, and Southee dropping a sitter on the last ball of the day!)5 -
You are all incredible!!!
Thanks for keeping me motivated.
Ok here we go!! Spring is starting to peek into the weather and I’m feeling better from my injury. Hoping to get back to half marathon distances by early fall without hurting myself.
Goal this month is 50 miles.

Your efforts all look amazing. Keep it up.
Feb was a bust for me, target 100 miles, actual 77. Moving on from officially the wettest Feb on record in my area, and hopefully up with a target of 120 miles for March.
There were some Feb highlights, work organised a team event where people came for a run or walk with me as part of training, and I finished the Brighton Half Marathon. Good places to build from.
If I can just lose the belly things would go a lot quicker!
10 -
Yep, February was a total bust for me too @TheMrWobbly, so I feel ya! Ended up with barely half of my usual mileage. So will start back easy and see how it goes this month. Will set a modest goal of 100 miles.
Thanks for setting us up for March @AlphaHowls!9 -
Hi everyone!
Got in my first March run of 13.2km. I have been following Garmin‘s „suggested workouts“ more or less but was inspired by @martaindale to finally figure out how to make my own workouts on my watch (it really wasn’t that hard). I am trying to figure out what my M race pace should/could be by trying to run at a pace I think could be my race pace. Today I ran 10k at that possible pace. It was a really nice run, so I think I’ll try to do a longer run at that pace next week and see what it’s like. The weather was perfectly pleasant and I saw a gaggle of geese and a bunch of trains go by while running.
13.2/250km.
@Scott6255 and @TheMrWobbly (congrats on the HM and great happy running pictures btw) @quilteryoyo and anyone else who struggled last month, I hope March is easier!6 -
March Running Goal: 17 runs, 55 miles
1.3 lbs. February weight loss (244.8 lbs -> 243.5 lbs)
I'm Chris; I moved to San Diego, California, in 2023. My fittest years were 2010 and 2019 when I did lots of food tracking, Iyengar yoga, and running. In 2024 I'm shooting for a cool, calm, collected, stable routine of fun, running, music, yoga, good work, and enjoying this place I live in.
I started a medication for obesity, Qsymia, about a month ago. It's had no big impact so far.
I signed up for an April 2024 Half Marathon to keep as a North Star. I am on a easy training plan to prepare for it, and so far I'm plugging along. The race is on the place that I usually go to for long runs, so I'm happy to go there and like the area.
Please connect on Garmin if you have one.
