WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR APRIL 2024

Carol - so sorry to hear about your brother, my sympathy to the family. All three of us kids in my family are still alive and relatively healthy - these days, at our age, we aren't promised tomorrow. I'm crossing fingers I'll be able to see both my sis and brother and their spouses this summer, it's been quite a few years even though we keep in touch by email and phone calls.
Lisa - absolutely love the addition and how nicely it's fixed up. The fern is gorgeous. I think your brickwork looks great and I wouldn't be overzealous about removing much cement. I've seen a lot of old buildings that look just like that, with bricks just peeking out in some areas. Gives it character.
Beth - many hugs to you and your mom. Is there a memory care unit where she currently is?
Sue - I like Evie's ideas about taking pictures of the mess. Do you have a photo of her and her make of car/license plate? Just something to tuck away. I try to not get paranoid, I just worked with the police too many years and watched too many Vera episodes.
Linda - I appreciate your input on flooring. All of this is good to know if I decide to ditch my carpeting, or eventually move to a new place that needs new flooring.
Heather - I think you mentioned setting up temporary sleeping arrangements on the first level of your house after surgery? Glad to hear you are still able to get some exercise in, being careful of the hips. Sorry about the frustration with cancelling the cruise and getting everyone off the dime to follow through. That kind of stress would make my pain worse.
Flea - I was just thinking about you yesterday, so happy to see you pop in here. Glad everything with your mom's estate is finally finished. Hope your job - and your DH's new one - are going well.
A while back, I ran across a YouTube channel "Hospice Nurse Julie." Again, it just popped up. I wish I had known about it several years ago when my DH was starting to fail with dementia and become frail. Even though he never made it to hospice, what she says about the final stages really rang a bell. I kept trying to get food into him, but he was slowly shutting down - I believe several months prior to his death. He never became agitated - perhaps it was due to his self medication from the "420" shop. Or maybe that was just him. I'm grateful for that.
If anyone is interested, here's a link to her channel. She has made several videos about Alzheimer's and dementia. Here's one:
Make it a fabulous week!

Carol-So sorry for your loss.
Beth-Sending hugs.
Michele-Ouch on the hip! Hope you feel better soon.
Eclipse is beginning now. It's getting darker. We get 55% eclipse. I'm more focused on not looking at the sun. It's like "don't touch your face" during COVID. Now, all I want to do is look at the sun.
Tina in CA5 -
Today’s gratitude: The sight of Joe with his walking stick, accompanying the dogs down the drive toward the powerline meadow.
Barbie the “when visiting my house…” amen, sister, AMEN!
Kylia, Lisa and Linda, thank you. You have sold me on lvp. Alas, like Heather, I have not the $$ and Joe would not be able to tolerate the disruption. So I’ll just dream…
Tina ants, ugh. We haven’t seen them here yet but OH, the invasion of the daddy long legs. [shudder] Puffing diatomaceous earth in the seams and cracks seems to help.
((hugs)) Hope you’ll still stay at the hotel and avoid the late night drive. Maybe he’ll feel better by brunchtime?
Annie how far away is the church from your home. Would your dad accept you walking with him?
Lisa some folks pay extra for that white, kinda like a German schmear? Sun room is gorgeous, well done!
Sue rejoicing the tenant is gone. IMIHO, while any future landlords would appreciate the heads up, anything you did to alert them could backfire. . . Will you rent again or are you twice shy?
Michele when you fell and glasses broke, did you hit your head?
Heather bravissima for all you’re doing to keep your strength. ((hugs)) for the pain and the drugs. What Evelyn said about how quickly this all happened. The operation seems so very far away, but I have to remember that May is next month. ((hugs))
Ginny that door dash gift certificate will be much appreciated. Sort of today’s equivalent of the grief casseroles people brought to bereaved families when I was growing up.
Beth words fail. (hugs), tears and prayers for you and your family.
Carol oh my very dear. ((hugs held extra long)) for you and your family.
Linda most of my vehicles have been names “Roxanne,” after my first bicycle, but my current Ford Escape is called “Bossy” because of all the verbal instructions she gives. . .
Rebecca sounds like taking a break from traveling is a healthful choice for you and the chief. Hope your sister understands.
Lanette yours (and Evelyn’s) to Sue. Insightful.
The partial eclipse here will be just about the time I’m driving to line dancing. Will keep my eyes out for distracted drivers . . .
And YES I did do the balance games and PT yesterday afternoon. Time to get at ‘em again.
Later, lighter, lovelies!

Rebecca - With all you are going through, and all your recent travelling, you are entitled to say that you haven't the energy to put them up, and they have to stay in a hotel and eat out. You could meet them for a meal somewhere. Sometimes our energy just runs out.
I have told my brother this, and he is finding it difficult to organise a visit! I want to see him but not entertain. He has many, many births due, so I'm not holding it against him. Pater Familias. per excellence. 11 grandchildren. 4 great grandchildren.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx3 -
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD, I think the only issue is going to be getting my sister to understand me not wanting visitors. She wants to drive her rig up, so she can bring her Bernese Mountain dog, Tucker. While that's a great plan, it would be no fun for Tucker in the 5th wheel all the time. Its so muddy here, even in the summer, that having him staked out would be a muddy mess. Then there's the deer and the squirrels that would set him off. Then cleaning up after him in the yard. I know she will ask to let him come in the house but Lee says no. Other option is having us take a train up from Oregon, but husband says our car would not be comfortable for my sister to ride around in. Another option is having her take her truck up with no trailer, and it would give her more room. That seems the more easier option, because we do have a spare bed. Again its me traveling down, visiting then riding back with her. She will want to organize my house. She will whine why I don't have lawn furniture outside. She will buy me plants because I have no plants. I hate all that judgement. She will want to prune my back hedge.😂

Beth-prayers for you and your family. Such a tough time with your mother. The veil of dementia is scary and painful.
Carol-prayers to you also. I have not lost a sibling but did lose a sil. It is so good you were able to connect via social media if not in person.
Sun currently looks like a crescent moon in terms of shape. It is really pretty cool. Tried some pictures and couldn't get exposure etc figured out so I gave up on that and just keep checking progress. It it pretty much over my front yard so get good view from porch3 -
Saga rang me back. Afraid of missing a booking I guess. I now have the number of the insurance people. Progress.
Not only am I pursuing this current claim, but I also want to discuss the next cruise insurance situation with them.

The tests came back negative ,which means Tracys babies don't have anything genetically wrong with them...praise the lord..physically hopefully not.but we shall see..I know she knows the gender but is holding off..
Carol- sorry about your brother.. my deepest condolences4 -
Joy - Hope your daughter's news is good. Hopefully, the lack of urgency means that it isn't urgent, and isn't just incompetence on someone's part. Home improvement is as close as Corey and I ever come to arguing--we're both conflict-avoidant, which has its benefits in terms of doing projects together. 👀🙃😀
Heather - Good news getting some information you needed from Saga, hope you can get what you need sorted all the way around.
So... I was outside at totality, I took pictures with the selfie side of my phone, like Tina I was just trying not to look at the sun, and wanted to! Didn't work. The pics just look like the sun. The birds never stopped singing, Egg was inside getting a snack when I walked back in. I tried wearing Corey's welders helmet to look at the sun, just gave me an instant headache from the weight. 🤷🏻 I dunno.
Anyway - smelling like leather and sweat and dirt at the moment, but after two hours, I decided I like the bricks with the German schmear (thank you Barbara, I'll use that later with Corey... 😀). After I got all the mortar cleaned off around it, I was able to get all that detritus in the dumpster... then I took an hour to pull some siding off under the carport. I told Corey I would pull everything off that I could reach. Not as much as he probably thought, as I think he thinks I'm six feet tall.
I'm not. 🙃 But I might get out and do a little more once I take a break. Or maybe not.
Rebecca - You have my full sympathy. I just don't give in anymore. No matter what your sister promises, you know what she's like better than she does, and it will all happen. My answer these days is "I'm not traveling anymore," and I use the excuse of the old military life when I deign to give any excuse at all. You can use that one too, if you like. I've done that bit, I have no urge to go anywhere else. Possibly ever. I may change my mind someday, but it's not today.
Time for a snack.

MFP Weekly Check-in April 8, 2024
Debbie in Napa Valley, CA - Stats for this week- down 2lbs this week. 5 days of exercise. At least 10,000 steps those days but 15,000 and 18,000 a couple of them. I did track my food the beginning of the week. Need to get back to tracking every day
Sue in WA - Interesting side effects of new meds for a-fib. i have decreased appetite and some foods have odd taste especially dairy. current weight is now 220. Need to work on increasing exercise again. I feel like I am constantly starting over.
Rita in Roswell NM - Up from last week. Too many sweets around this past week. I’ve just been binging. I can feel it making me lethargic. I need PIP’s boot again to restart! Better this week, making a point of it!!
Lanette in SW WA State- Celebrating healed foot and staying in weight range. Navigating blood sugar control like last week. Moved first coffee in the am to after breakfast, and have eliminated eating prunes for now – they have a high glycemic index and high glycemic load. Perhaps they were part of the reason for move into pre-diabetes. (I started eating them for bone health, believe it or not!)

One thing dh got and used a LOT(wore the first one out and after mending multiple times we replaced it) was what they call a "sock ease" for putting on socks. It was simple for him to use after his surgeries. Before he got it, I was the one doing his socks and so much more.

Heather - My mom had the sock ease thingy that Debbie mentioned and she got the hang of it right away and it really helped !
Carol - sending hugs (((((((((((()))))))))))))))))
Beth - I wondered if you should have mom check for a UTI - others here have said that the symptoms are weird as folks age.... and if that is part of the issue it might help.

Dad's shoulder was sore after his fall, and it's worse from starting the lawnmower. You would think there would be a better way to start the darn thing than pulling that cord. And yes he did some mowing yesterday but skipped his hip stretches.
Annie in Delaware
Electric lawn mowers have done away with all that cord pulling.
I've never mowed a lawn in my life, but my husband uses an electric mower which appears to operate in a similar way to a vacuum cleaner ... plug it in, turn it on, and go.
M in Oz
ours doesn't even have a cord- it uses batteries
I have mowed a LOT of lawns.
When I lived in Mobile, we had a HUGE lawn in front and big one in back. We had a little electric with a cord. It took 3-4 extension cords to get all the way to the road. I loved mowing that, except when I would hit a fire ant hill. That little thing got a work out for sure- rained all summer so mowed every week or more often.3 -
Lanette ... I watched the video. Thank you.
Kim ... UTIs are definitely part of the problem as she has them continually. We are now considering prophylactic antibiotics. While the UTIs worsen her dementia considerably, they are not the sole cause.
Eclipse ... we were in the path of totality and the cloud coverage was horrible until about 15 minutes before the full eclipse. Then we had patchy clouds and were able to see the crescents and even the full eclipse through breaks in the sky, but it was still hazy. We only used the glasses for a very brief time. But the amazing thing was the instantaneous change from light to full darkness and then light again. I must not have been paying attention in science class ... I had no idea that I was watching the shadow of the moon pass over us. I had to ask my husband why it was so black to the west. The darkness honestly was surreal and to see the western sky turn flaming orange before becoming startling bright light again was beautiful. Of course, my idiot neighbors had to set off fireworks! Two and half hours later, the clouds moved out and the skies are clear again. Figures!
I've had more conversations with family and the facility today regarding my mom. Today, she was cooperative and pleasant. Lanette ... yes, her current facility has a highly rated memory care unit. One of the reasons we chose her current facility. At the moment everyone is watching her. I guess there is a narrow window of opportunity for successful intervention in the timing of moving a person into memory care. I will be learning more about this at Thursday's family meeting.

Beth: Hugs and strength to you as your mom's dementia steals away her quality of life. It's awful to watch.
Carol: My sympathy on the loss of your brother.
Lisa: Thanks for the link for compression socks. I think with the amount of time I spend standing at my job I should have gotten these a year ago.
Heather: So glad you are on the path towards new hips and getting back to your best life.
Tina: Hope you find a flexible part-time job that gets you out, feeling productive and having fun.
I spent my normal gym time cleaning up my deck after 2 days of severe windstorms. No trees down, but lots of trash and dirt to sweep and dump. Then I had lunch outside on my hammock chair and watched the eclipse crescent while eating my lunch. Not my first eclipse, so not really such a rush.
Weight is still 4 pounds over what I was at Thanksgiving, but slowly moving in the right direction. Not eating at night seems to be an absolute must.
Stay well friends. We can do this.

Michele - how are you doing today after your tumble? Hope you were able to get in to see your doctor - I wonder if your sciatica is related to the calluses on your foot? Meaning your gait being off a bit.
Beth - glad your mom is doing better today. I hope Thursday's meeting gives some good direction regarding your mom's care. WOW on your eclipse experience! Exciting to "see" it.
In the Hospice Nurse Julie video I linked earlier, she mentions the staircasing decline associated with dementia, sometimes caused by infection like a UTI. My DH had a UTI or some type of infection about 6 months before he passed, it made him "loopy" and his memory took a sharp decline almost overnight, plus he wasn't able to make it to the toilet and would pee on the floor. He didn't remember that.
I thought he'd had some kind of a TIA or stroke - I couldn't drag him to the doctor. But after speaking to his doc, we deduced it must have been a UTI. My DH stabilized after that for several months and no more bathroom accidents, but never recovered back to where he was prior to this. When I watched this video, it gave me goosebumps.
Even tho my DH wasn't in hospice, his decline seemed to be following this pattern she describes.

Forgot to get my check in info to Lanette today, but am happy to report that I am within .2 of a pound from where I was at the end of March, so headed in the right direction again!
Very cloudy here today, so didn't notice the eclipse at all, we only had a partial anyway, so.... I do remember the one in 2017, it was kind of neat, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be running off somewhere to get a better view.

I rang that number this morning. Wrong department.
So I rang the post sales number. Got through to a very nice young woman, who told me the claim had been processed on the 26th March, when I first rang them, and all my worries about them accepting it were pointless. The GP secretary rang me this morning, and I said I would let her know if I needed more evidence. So I don't.
The credit card I paid the deposit with is out of date, so they are sending me a cheque in the post! That never happens over here. The balance will be a bank account refund. She said wait until the 17th before you enquire again if it hasn't arrived.
I must say I have no faith in the postal service, so we will see.
The young man at the wrong department did give me the number for the medical screening people, so I can ring them, when I have recovered, about the October cruise. Part of me just wants to cancel, the other part thinks it would do me good and be a celebration. The other side is, it is a very expensive cruise and the money would go towards the second hip.
At least things are moving forward.
The total eclipse sounds amazing!

I can hardly walk at all now, and the advice is to stay off your hips as much as possible. I limp around the house and can walk 100 yards with my cane. I crawl up the stairs on all fours, and come backwards down them.
I am doing floor exercises as much as possible, that are not stressing my hips.
30 Knee pushups, a plank or two, micro bridges for glutes, kneeling back waves, and a couple of limb raises, sitting back on haunches, upward raising legs, back flexibility stretches, plus squeezing a cushion between my knees, and using a band to widen my thighs. Then I downward dog to get up and do some balance and left leg bouncing. Then a bit of 7kg dumbbells, while I'm sitting down. Bicep curls and overhead.
My upper body is good. I can rise from a chair easily without hands, and I can bend to the ground from the waist. It is just my hips.
All through the day I am squeezing my glutes and stretching my legs. Foot exercises all the time. I do not want to lose strength. But walking is not recommended.
I have to severely limit ibuprofen for my kidneys and the Ramipril I am on. I do take it once a day with lunch. I take a combo of pills in rotation. Aspirin, paracetamol, codeine. At nught i use a heated mini blanket. Without any painkillers I cannot function and am in despair. With them, life looks much better.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx
I would have thought that walking on a flat surface would be easier on the hips than crawling up and down stairs. Articles I have read and physiotherapists I have talked to all indicate that exercise does not make osteoarthritis worse, and despite the pain, can improve the situation or at least keep it from getting any worse. Different perspectives from different parts of the world, I guess.
Wheelchairs would be expensive, but you might see if you can rent one of these for the next month or so.
@bwcetc & @1948CWB ... so sorry about your family members.Machka: I used to fence with Tim. He took it up in middle school. He started doing tournaments where, as a loving and dutiful mother, I would carry his equipment around from piste to piste for him. One time he said that I must do that because I can’t fence. WELL. Challenge accepted! Must say it was very therapeutic standing on the opposite side of a piste with a foil in my hand aimed my son. LOL

All the color in the house is brought in by furnishings of one kind or another, other than the kitchen, where the original lower cabinets are a deep teal. Paint, for me, has to do with maximizing light as I get older, other than in the bedroom, which I want to be able to completely darken. Regarding the floor, sounds like you have good advice.
Whatever we go with will be pale ... very light. We're looking at these two colours (which might look different on your monitor than they do on the paint cards I've got, depending on your settings). One is a very light blue-grey and the other is a very light pink-brown. And I might even want to go slightly lighter than whichever one we choose.
Maybe like the light blue in the first two pictures in this link (or lighter) ...

Or maybe pinkish like this, but lighter ...LisaInArkansas wrote: »Heather - I cannot imagine crawling up and down stairs as an option. Sounds painful in and of itself. I do not doubt that you'll come out of the surgery exceeding all expectations for recovery time and extent. The differing advice on different sides of the pond is a little unnerving - every message you can find here says to walk as much as you can before hip replacement, but you're being told not to walk over there. Who's right? Maybe both are right and what matters is what you do after? I don't have a good answer for that.
Yes, exercise (walking) is emphasised here too.
Above is the kitchen - he extended the tile on the right side as well after dinner and just left the paver bricks at the very back of the grill. He'll be picking up some trim to finish the backsplash this week. I'm pleased with it, I think it's a very olde-worlde kind of design and picks up the teal in the back wall. There are still a few things to get done, but it's a comfortable room already.

Very nice!I love the artwork you all share. Machka, those markers look cool. What are they? Maybe I'll try them. I still need hobbies. I did buy a puzzle early in the year and had a goal to get it put together before baseball season started. I did. Now I need something else. Maybe drawing or coloring. I don't like messy things, so painting isn't my bag.
