I have one, and I'm just very curious as to the answer. My parents both smoke, and I live at home.

Yes. :-( Even second and thirdhand smoke can have the same effects as smoking yourself.

Smoking yourself does, certainly, but secondhand smoke doesn't.

Cigarettes irritate all your body systems. They are detrimental to your health (even second hand) and can delay healing time.
If you have an ulcer and you are exposed to second hand smoke, it may make it worse or prevent you from getting better.
I would avoid being in any rooms with your parents if they are smoking or try to nicely ask them if they mind smoking outside. Good luck!

Well I know that if you directly inhaled a cigarette it will irritate your ulcer. I have had a couple of stomach ulcers and was told to avoid cigarettes alcohol coffee and a few other things lucky for me i didnt smoke but missed my morning coffee ! Hmm .. however I am not sure about passive smoking effecting it .. I would consult with your doctor.

You look so young to have an ulcer. Home it clears up very soon. I don't see how second hand smoke can irritate your ulcer but I am not a doctor. I guess the other alternative is to move out of your parents home, But take it from an old lady, if you are still staying in your parents home, you have it made in the shade! Good Luck

Calm down. It was my subtle way of pointing out that the OP, who asks a lot of medical questions, should use a search engine herself sometimes. That's all.

Perhaps she should have consulted her Doctor who diagnosed her with an ulcer if Google isn't sufficient.

I run a bigger chance of finding someone on here who knows a thing or two, or who has had an ulcer (see a few posts above), then I do on google. Let's not be catty, and let's not be self-important. That goes to all of you -.- No fighting on my thread! :D happy place.

    Definitely talk with your doctor.

There are ample websites out there that talk of the dangers of second hand smoke. Even though I could not find anything with a quick search and a CINAHL search specific to secondhand smoke and ulcers (which doesn't mean there's not a link), there clearly are many deadly reasons to avoid secondhand smoke, if at all possible:

Just wondering where you got this information? Is it speculation? Just because a link between the two hasn't been studied does not definitively rule out association.

I'd be more inclined to believe it's stress related or you've been eating some food that started it. Are we talking mouth or stomach?

Also caffeine, greasy food and alcohol (not that you should be drinking at your age).

So ulcers are usually caused by a bacteria as someone else pointed out (H. pylori). However, smoking and other things can increase your risk for developing one and can impair healing:

And I'll stop talking now lol! Sorry all. Good night.

The burden of proof is on the person making the claim of harm. The fact that it hasn't been studied MEANS that we're obligated to say there is no connection - until it is proved through research. Just because second hand smoke is bad (which I would personally argue may not be true in real-world concentrations, but not on this board as it's beside the point) and primary/first-hand smoking aggravates ulcers does NOT mean we can say that second hand smoke has anything to do with ulcers. That's a classic logical fallacy called the fallacy of division.
