I am planning on doing the MN warrior dash summer 2012. Has anyone completed this, and what can I expect? Right now I am doing 3 Jillian Michael workout, and I workout 4-6 days a week for an hour. What we some things others did to prepare for the dash?

  • there was one recently here in TN and lots of people I know participated. They had an amazing time there. I think that I'll be doing this one next year. :)
  • Oh, you may wanna jog a bit. There is some running involved, so you wanna train for that. Try the couch to 5K program to get you started. It worked for me.

bump...I am totally doing it next summer in North Bend, WA with my fiance (husband by then). He was all in once I told him he gets a viking helmet.

I'm curious to know if people have tips to get ready. I'm working out about 4 days a week, since that's what I have time for right now. I make it a mix of running, strength training and zumba. Hopefully I can survive it!

I'm doing one in april with my boss and some friends...he attaches ropes to a ladder stuck on the wall and has us pull ourselves up by them

I did one here in Texas back in March & I'm doing another one in November! They're an absolute blast. I suggest running short distances then walking a little bit & continue that cycle. Depending on the course, you run a distance then stop for an obstacle. I don't know how you could prepare for the obstacles.. every course is different! Most at least include climbing a rope wall, crawling through mud & climbing over small walls. You're gonna love it!!

What is the couch to 5K program? Where would I find this?
  • My husband and I did it in MI in July. We were both at least 50 pounds overweight at the time, did no training whatsoever and got through it on a 95 degree day. If you keep up with what you're doing, I'm sure you'll be just fine by next summer. My biggest recommendations would be to make sure to stretch well beforehand, get hydrated, and wear some kind of knee pads! I have scars on my knees from some of the obstacles.

Did the one in Massachusetts this past June - it was so muddy the whole race was one big mud puddle - I trained by running and doing a bootcamp class. It was a lot of fun!

I did one last weekend. Coming off of that, my suggestions (and things I will be training for before the next one), are:
*Upper body strength training. Lots of pulling yourself up and over things
*Running/jogging program. I walked 95% of the course, but would really like to be able to run at least part of the next one.
*Wear gloves. I know some people will say you don't need them, and you would do fine without. But I found them helpful on the rope challenges, if nothing else to protect my hands
*Find a jungle gym or something similar and practice climbing things. You might look crazy, but it would help.

I didn't train before this one, it took me a long time to finish, but I had a blast and can't wait to do it again.

I did two this year - North Bend, WA and North Plains, OR - and I'm already signed up for both of them in 2012. There were participants of all shapes, sizes & fitness levels at both. You'll be fine. Expect to have some serious fun and to get really really dirty!!

There's actually a thread for MN people!
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/353745-warrior-dash-in-mn-2012

I've never participated, but I am SERIOUSLY thinking of doing it in 2012
  • I have not participated in it (missed the registration deadline by 1day :@) but I did still go and watch. It actually didn't look that difficult, and I was truely surprised by the variety in fitness levels of people participating and finishing. You If you want to competitive in the race upper body strenght and and the ability to run the 3.5+ miles at a fast pace is a must! On the warrior dash website you can take a look at finishing times at other races, its pretty quick, which shows how the obstacles aren't too difficult.
I'm currently doing p90x and that's a great program to help get that upper body strenght to get you through some of the obstacles and has improved my running speed.

Warrior Dash was by far the best thing i've ever done...will do it again without a doubt
training for it depends on where the event is...every course is different. if its at a ski resort (which mine was) watch out. the hills will kill you. if you can run a 5k without dying i would think you'll be okay. i hope to do it again next summer if it comes back my way and will be running hills until i puke. i didn't find the obstacles to be all that difficult. it was all legs.
awesome fun though. my friends and i made an entire weekend out of it...there's parts that are a little fuzzy.

Check out www.coolrunning.com - the program is excellent.

Also if you have an iPod Touch, you can get free apps that work with music for it.
  • Suggestion for training for the MN Warrior Dash--hills, do lots and lots of hill training! I participated in July 2011 and it's at the same location in 2012 which is Afton Alps Ski Resort. The obstacles themselves were easy enough but running up the hills (yes, you go up many times as you weave through the course they have set up) is the hard part! The ski hills that are fun to ski down aren't nearly as much fun to run up!

That said it was one of the best things I've ever done and I highly recommend that everyone do it at least once! Happy to say that our summer vacation dates changed to later in July or else I wouldn't have been able to do the MN Dash again in 2012. I'm doing it! See you there my fellow Warriors!!

This helped me run my first 5K this past labor day in under 30 minutes.

I did it just a few weeks ago and my advice would be (if the course were like the one I was on) to practice running on different surfaces. I run a lot but had trouble runnig on all of the hills with mud that is really deep. I was a lot slower than when I usually run! Another thing I would suggest is just to make sure that you have good endurance for the run :)
