What is IF?

Hello I’m Ginger And I’m new here. I am interested in IF but I don’t really understand it. I’ve had gastric bypass surgery and have loss 100lbs! I’m over my 1yr anniversary so my doctor told me that I have to start working harder now to keep it off and keep losing weight. Can anyone explain IF to me? Thanks in advance

And Dr. Google explains it this way....

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It’s currently very popular in the health and fitness community. IF doesn’t specify which foods you should eat but rather when you should eat them. This means it’s not really a diet — it’s more accurately described as an eating pattern.

So if you eat a lot during the "eating period," you will not loose weight :'(

One thing that's helpful to know is intermittent fasting takes a lot of different forms. A similar concept is Time Restricted Eating. There are many ways to go about it depending on your needs. Some people like to take one or two days where they eat nothing every week, and some might limit calories to 500 or so. Others will pick a time, usually 6-8 hours in length, where they will have their meals and not eat outside of that.

I will sometimes use that strategy because I'm small enough that I need to get down around 1500 calories to lose anything, and spreading that across two meals and a snack is a whole lot more satisfying than trying to spread that across a normal meal schedule. I agree with Gisel2015, you will not lose weight if you still have high calorie intake despite the time restriction. I use it as a tool to keep within my limits.

    Hope this helps!

Gin Stephens, who wrote Fast Feast Repeat about IF (next on my reading list), has a podcast about IF that I've been listening to and think is very informative.
