NOVEMBER 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.

You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until NOVEMBERR 1, 2024 to start logging your runs!

Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.

Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:

When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:

To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):

If I work really hard, I can hit HALF of what I did last year 😉 But I probably won't get there. So I'll shoot for 80 miles, which still may be a stretch with the holidays. Happy running y'all 😁7 -
I can't see my plan more than a few days out so no mileage goal. Instead I guess I'll aim for doing all my planned runs. I am doing my AR race this month, the summit to summit HM in Hot springs. I will run up and down not 1 but 2 mountains for an elevation gain of over 1000 ft. I predict I will have a hard time walking the next day.8

Going for 185 in November.
2024 running the year the annual goal. 302.5 to go. Want this wrapped up by Dec 19th when I fly out.
I think I have 40 guaranteed run days.
1st to 22nd in Nov. Then I fly to the States for 8 nights.
Then I got 1st to 19th in Dec. Then off to Costa Rica.
I will get some runs in while abroad. I always do. But gonna have to treat them as bonus runs.
So it's gonna be tough.
So I'm aiming for 185 in November.9 -
I'm aiming for 100 miles for November. No travel plans and with the long Thanksgiving weekend, I should be able to get some bonus miles in.5

Hi everyone, apologies for being missing in action for most of last month. I’ve been trying to sort this damned back of mine out and sadly, while I have managed to get the ‘pinch’ released, which has been bothering me for months and was messing with my range of movement) we’ve discovered the low-grade ache in my back, which I thought was caused by the pinch, is actually osteoarthritis.
Turns out I have “severe spondylosis” in L1-L2 and L5-S1. Basically the discs in my lower back have thinned a lot. There’s nothing that can be done to reverse this (it’s also very common). However, running distance on roads is not recommended 🙁, nor is digging in the garden (twisting while lifting is very bad) 😣. More trails and Pilates for me!
I’m waiting to see a sports doctor for an official verdict/plan rather than relying on Google, but they’re all booked up and not taking appointments until after January so I guess we’ll just go with Google for now.
I am booked to see a physio next week to get some specific back/core strengthening exercises and hopefully she will give me a better idea of how much running I can do.
From what I can work out, this flareup was caused by digging in the garden - planting trees in heavy soil - not by running. Interestingly, I went for a run yesterday and my back is feeling the best it has felt in the last couple of weeks, so who knows.
In better news, spring has definitely arrived downunder and the first of my roses are blooming. I also have a frog who’s moved into my pond (creative license on the word pond as it’s an old disused water trough). Pics below.8 -
New here! Excited to start a new challenge. Going for 150 for the month. Been jogging/running consistently 3-4 miles per day the last 2 weeks.

@ContraryMaryMary I'm so sorry about your back issues. I'm glad your run yesterday felt good. I hope the physio has some good exercises you can do to help and that the sports doctor has good news for you, once you get to see one! Anything that torques your back is not good - raking, digging, vacuuming, etc. I hope you can keep the pain at bay and still get in the running you want to do. Those roses are gorgeous! That frog looks really happy in the pond.

I'm going to go for a goal of 80 miles total of fast walking and running again. Hopefully, I will exceed that, but you never know.7 -

November is off to a good start with a gentle 5k. I can feel my back when running, but it doesn’t hurt. Afterwards, it feels fantastic, so I’m taking that as running is a good thing. Just nixing the long runs until I see the specialist in January.8

I went to the gym this morning and got another Styku body scan. Since I started going to the gym in April, I have lost a total of 12 pounds, and, according to the scan, lost 8.4 pounds of body fat and and increased my lean mass by 2.4%. I'm pretty proud of my progress.
I had to talk myself into getting on the treadmill after I got home. It has been a dreary, rainy day and I just wanted to veg on the couch. Once I got going, it was okay. Avg pace was 12:41 min/mile. Avg HR was 136 with a max of 154 bpm.9 -

November Goal: 100 miles
11/1: 8.20 miles

I'm not really sure what to set my goal for this month. I will be tapering this week for my Half coming up on the 9th so next week will be lower and I may want to take it easy a little after the race. So I'm going to set a conservative goal of 100 miles and I may update that later if I think I will be running more.
Today my plan called for an 8 mile interval run. It is the last real workout before the race. I thought about changing it to Sunday. I don't really have time to run 8 miles on a week day, but I decided to go ahead and do it today. This weekend will be pretty busy plus there is a chance of thunderstorms so I will probably need to do a shorter run on Sunday and I got up early enough to get the run done before work, so I did it. It went well. It was 2 miles warm up, then 4x100 meter intervals, then 10x400 then a half mile cool down. I finished the workout about .25 miles from home, so I ended up with 8.25 miles. My weather app wasn't showing rain until early Saturday, but it started raining on me during the 5th 400 meter intervals and rained until the 10th interval.

Hi all and welcome to Nov. I was so enjoying our Opossum/Possum discussion I forgot to post yesterday. I am in for 100 miles I think.
Yesterday got in 5 at a decent pace and was having fun seeing all the "litter" from halloween including one very small shoe and a tiger tail. 😂😂

@ContraryMaryMary sorry to hear about the lower back/spine issues. Hopefully you can still find a way to get some runs in without pain and that it doesn’t get any worse.
I’m still sticking to being in my walking boot to try to get the ankle tendon to calm down. My long on my feet shifts at work (wearing the boot) are not helping any. I finally spoke to my manager Thursday about it and asked to be able to do more of the sitting down duties so I can be off my feet more. The pain and swelling are less, but noticeable improvement has been slow. I see the foot/ankle orthopedic specialist again in a couple of weeks to see what next steps are. Frustrating and feeling blue that I can’t walk/run right now. Stopped by my training group’s morning run this morning to say hello to them and to pick up my training team shirt. The race is in two weeks and I’m seriously bummed that I won’t be able to participate.

Checking in for this month with a nice run. I did one more run last month but didn't post because it was so shite. Annoyingly, whenever I have a bad run I'm afraid to go out and run again because it might be shite again. This time it worked. It got surprisingly cold today and I nearly froze in my usual running clothes. But I also enjoyed the cool and dry air.8 -

Long run today. It's gotten warm again but it's supposed to cool off a little mid week. The temps made it tough but I got it done. I'm looking forward to it cooling off again.
After my run, I took my kid to get poke bowls for lunch. It was delicious and really hit the spot. My husband is gone this weekend so I'm spending the rest of a quiet rainy day on the couch watching tv.8 -

@quilteryoyo I'm always so impressed at your ability to get your runs in even when you don't want to. I've been on call this week so my days have been long and I only did one run during the week. When my schedule gets disrupted it really derails my running.6 -

I am doing the Jeff Galloway HM plan, so he had me doing 10 min or warm up and 10 of cool down, and then running 12 miles. Since my race is 10 miles, not a HM, I decided to let myself cut it short. I was going to be happy with 5 miles and then go from there. As you can see, I kept going, albeit slowly. My legs really didn't start getting tired until around mile 9. The entire 11 miles had an average pace of 13:42 min/mile with an avg HR of 124 and max of 145 bpm. I broke out the warm up (0.35 miles) and cool down (1.03 miles) walks just to see what the "run/wun" pace was: 13:22 min/mile. I'm happy with that. My fastest miles were 4,6,7, and 8 at 12:33, 12:30, 12:33, and 12:07 min/mile.
I'm trying to figure out fueling, but only ate 3 gummy bears and drank about 16 oz of water. The last gummy bear didn't set well with my tummy. What are those salt tabs that some of you use? That sounds like a much better idea than gummies.7 -
Hey guys.
Well it's probably been a couple of years since I last posted and I so glad to see so many regulars still here!
I've missed you all so much and have thought of you a lot over the time.
Life has been insane for me. This year alone I organised a conference for people in my profession, published two scientific papers, and as of Friday 1st November, I handed in my thesis for my Masters degree - completed while I work full time and balancing time with my kids.
Additionally in May we did a trip around the world.
Sadly over the last 3 years due to constant illness and injury and just life and stress, I have gained back all the weight I lost, and had kept off for 5 years. My running is non existent and I really am starting from scratch. I attempted a 5k run this morning... And yeah
So to begin at the beginning again, is hard. Mentally and physically. And I'm also significantly older and peri-menopausal.
So I'm going to join back in and hope for the motivation I need to get back to it.
Also, am taking a year off other commitments ahead of starting my PhD in 2026 so it's a year to concentrate of me and my family.
