SophieRosieMom wrote: »Tracey - glad Roger took the hint and finished that baseboard for you. I think they get blind. As Heather mentioned, you've been running at full speed the past few weekends and it's probably will continue. Your dad was a neat guy, don't blame you for still missing him. (((HUGS)))
Heather - glad you are getting the reading lights. Sure makes a difference. I have 2 lamps in my living room, one by my recliner and another on the other side of the room I rarely used. A few weeks ago I decided to turn both of them on - makes a world of difference and brightens everything up wonderfully with the fall/winter overcast and gloom setting in these days.
Has anyone heard from Kelly KJ? Hope all is well at her house. Miss her - she probably is juggling many plates in the air right now.
Ginny - I neglected to mention what a cute photo of your grandbaby.
Allie - Delia is adorable and she's growing so fast.
Beth - so sorry to hear about all of the funerals. Two more of my former dispatchers died in the past couple months - they were younger than me. I hadn't kept up with them much after I retired but had a lot of admiration and respect for them, they had hard jobs and worked crazy hours.
Lisa - love those shelves! Isn't it a good feeling to be able to find things quickly? Plus such a pleasure to look at. My potting shed used to look kind of like that before it became the chicken headquarters, lol. Hope your vertigo wraps up the visit and goes on an extended vacation.
Pip - speaking of potting shed, what an adorable potting bench! About ten years ago I found one similar to yours at a furniture store at a reasonable price when I wasn't looking for one... came home, thought about it, went back the next day and it was gone. Love the way you use those little lights in several areas. Your photos are better than thumbing through Sunset Magazine.
I think Rori on the way to Thailand. Can't wait to see some pictures.
Michele - I keep forgetting to tell you how impressed I am that you do an exercise video most days. You've been doing them for as long as I can remember! I think I'd be in much better shape had I done that and made it a daily habit. You are proof that it works. Sorry to hear about your foot - crazy that they can't get it cleared up once and for all.
Shipping delays: Has anyone been experiencing delays in shipments? I ordered pants from Land's End last week, they were supposed to be here on Friday, then Saturday, then yesterday and a no show. Looks like they finally did arrive at my local post office. Amazon - same thing on some items. Maybe the Christmas rush has started already.
Chromebook: Last week I bought an inexpensive Chromebook at Walmart, so I took it out of the box yesterday to get it charged up and see what's what. After dealing with Windows, the Chrome is similar but uses a little different language to describe the functions. Kind of like Windows 11 . I'm looking forward to spending more time on it and getting familiar with how to navigate around. So far it does look pretty simple and it's fun to wrap my brain around new technology. I found a brand new wireless mouse in my "technology" drawer. Score!
Did a fairly major backup and grabbed things from this old HP yesterday. Between the constant popups from McAfee warning me the world will come to an end if I don't renew and now a warning from HP that I need to sign up for their $$ service, I'm ready for this thing to have a meltdown and just be done with it!
Finishing up my notes to take to Dr. Matt this morning.
Try not to overdo the Thanksgiving preparations. Collette invited me to her house on Thursday, I declined so she said she'd make me a plate to drop off. That sounds perfect to me, she's a great cook. And if she doesn't drop something off, that's OK too.
Have a good week.

Thanks! 60 bucks on Amazon marketplace!! Most I found on there or anywhere were $100 or more. I was planting on paying it but I liked the way it looked. The pictures on the posting didn’t do it justice.2 -

I got my drivers license when I was a senior in high school. My family had an Old's 98 that was big but easy to drive. When my grandmother died just before I graduated, my parents flew to NY and drove her Fiat with automatic transmission back to our house in California. I wanted to be able to drive it so I had my boyfriend teach me how to drive a standard transmission.
Tracey, so sorry to hear about Rodger and his moods. It's no fun being the one doing everything and having a grumpy spouse in the mix. Be kind to yourself starting with getting some rest.
Pip, I love your potting table. I think I'd like to have one, too.
Lisa, Your shelf building skills are amazing. You are a woman of many talents.
Annie, sorry to hear you aren't feeling well.
Heather, I've found myself using "the old lady card" on many occasions when it suits me to want to avoid something. It's very useful.
My Sunday walking friend is back from Texas where she spent six weeks having knee replacement surgery and recovery time at her brother's house. She drove for the first time yesterday to come to my house and we kept our walk short. Her doctor reminded her that she was six weeks into a fifty-two week recovery time. She is a "go getter" and would naturally want to rush her recovery.
Carol, We pay a lot of money for high speed internet but we are like you and consider it worth the cost because we use the internet for meetings on Zoom and watch a lot of streaming TV. It is our source of entertainment and connection with the outside world but we don't spend money on other types of recreation.
Lanette, We didn't get any invitations to Thanksgiving this year, but if we had, we would have turned them down. Jake likes holiday food so we bought a turkey and the makings of mashed potatoes and stuffing. If I were by myself, I'd probably ignore the holiday completely. Gratitude is a way of life for me.
We still get up early (5:30) and take the dogs out for "business" but Annie doesn't like to go for a walk in the dark so after breakfast, I have to find things to do until it starts to get light (after 7AM) so I've had to rethink my morning. I have been using the time to do chores that I would usually have left until afternoon. I'd happily go out and walk for hours in the dark, but Jake misses me and so do the dogs if I go out by myself.
Looking for an author recommendation? I recently read a book called "How to Age Disgracefully" by Clare Pooley. I liked it so much that I got her first book, "The Authenticity Project" and can hardly put it down.

cityjaneLondon wrote: »Ah, Tracey, big hugs. I think every married person has been there! Plus the memories of your dad. Quite the combination.
Would journalling help? Writing it all out can help you decide what you are really angry/upset about.
But sometimes we do have to have those hard conversations. The cost of keeping our feelings under wraps is often an explosion at the wrong moment. Mine used to come out when I'd had a few drinks. Not proud of myself.
Stuffing everything down can make us ill. It can help to ask them how they are feeling right now. I guess he isn't feeling so great about himself either. Then listen. Hard I know, not to come back with something, some angry suggestion, but really listening for understanding can help both parties. No criticism. Then you could talk about your dad. Sometimes being vulnerable is the way to go. Feeling overwhelmed this time of year is totally normal. I should think half of women feel the same way! 'It's the most horrible time of the year'. We are expected to do everything and money worries crowd in. Being the family 'leader' and matriarch is a big responsibility. I remember KJ saying she felt as if she had to keep the world up on her shoulders, like a female Atlas.
Luckily for me, I'm now past that stage in life, and now play the 'old lady' card with glee. I've abandoned most responsibilities. But it is so real for you and your generation, shouldering everything.
Yes, you are strong. But you are not superhuman.
I think you are wonderful. I like you.

My eldest sister and I video chat and just cry at each other.💖. I would rather process whatever I am feeling, either out of my eyeballs, or playing a piano, or venting to husband, and not do what my middle sis does which is avoid, say she's fine, and just "doesn't mentally go there".

So, all my Christmas shopping is now done!!! Grandchildren - two gifts each. Son and DDIL - Very small foodie host gifts. John - five Santa gifts.
I finished up just now, so feel pretty relieved. I've bought John the same book light that I've got, which arrived today. It seems pretty good, but I will see tonight.
So now it's just the rest of the GF food prep I'm doing to help my son out. It will all freeze, so I can stagger it. Next one I think is GF stuffing balls.
The cleaner said she is coming on the 23rd, so that's good. Because I'm once a fortnight, her holiday won't affect me.
John found the hot chocolate I made yesterday a bit rich for him. I was a bit shocked for a moment, as I had just been posting about it on Instagram, saying it evoked happy memories for me of continental holidays in the past and how much I loved it. Of course, he doesn't have my memories and associations, and he's not a rich food person, but it did give me a jolt when he told me. He liked the taste, he said, but only needed a few sips.
Then this morning he said he would like to schedule a painting session for this week. I'm quite busy every afternoon, hair, lunch out etc, and like to fit a nap in. I absolutely knew he would find it hard, but I suggested Wednesday morning. He was a bit shocked, and negative, as he writes seven mornings a week and hates his routine being disturbed. So I said, "Fine," and tried not to look annoyed. When I went downstairs ten minutes later, to join him at our breakfast table, he said he thought it would be OK to paint on Wednesday morning, if I wanted to.
What a sweetheart! I can imagine his brain working overtime as he prepared the breakfast.

My first car was a Mercury Montego my dad got for my 18th birthday. Got my driver’s license the same day and the payment book for the Montego. It was an automatic. Well after paying it off within a year, the timing belt went and the repair cost was more than the car so I did my first trade in for a Dodge Dart standard transmission. The whole of my training was a 5 mile drive with the person I bought it from (a car mechanic) then I was on my own! My boyfriend’s brother and he were ‘Motörhead’s’ and had fast custom cars. BF’s boyfriend and he would street race and I would ride with BF. BF’s brother thought he was all ‘that’, and so did I, so I raced his Chevelle against my Dart and I won! Short race length and my Dart had a great take off, but his Chevelle didn’t. He was totally embarrassed and I never let him forget it! LOL When I had paid that one off and had it a couple years, I traded for my dream car. A sky blue, white interior, white vinyl roof Dodge Charger, 1972. I had that one until it went way over 100,000 miles, then sold it to my brother. I grew up and bought a Toyota Corolla new and kept that for over 100,000 miles, then a Honda Hatchback which I don’t remember the make, and drove that to over 100K. A couple of junk vehicles after that along with the move to TN and motorcycle before the TN move. In TN bought a brand new Honda Accord which was in the shop all the time for recalls, so traded that for a Honda CRV which we drove into the ground. Now we have a 2016 Subaru Outback with 45K miles on it and have a long way to go before another. I love driving!!

Happy Monday, my dears,
Been a quite productive morning - swanned down to Walmart this morning super early, picked up a couple of chilled rotisserie chickens and brought them back home to dismember them with extreme prejudice. Combined a pound of the meat with broccoli cheese soup from this weekend plus leftover rice and a box of stuffing mix to make three casseroles. Froze two, and will make one for dinner tonight.
Was able to get eight protein packs for lunches out of it for Corey, with six of those going in the freezer as well, plus another two packs of already diced chicken that will each be the protein for a full meal for me and Corey. Approximately 20 servings total for $8 - Pleased with that. Saved all the bits that make me urp up a little when I'm eating chicken on the bone, as well as the bones, and froze them, too, to make chicken stock later. Not at Debbie's level, but pleased! 😸
Did all that putting together and prepping while talking to two different friends who live a thousand miles apart, and texting back and forth with the son, who is still planning on coming down for Thanksgiving Day. I think we'll probably just skip the whole get-together for Christmas. The weather's always too iffy, and Corey and I generally only celebrate if the grands are here.
On the subject of dealing with emotions or holding them in, yeah it doesn't do me any good to hold things in. Most of my emotions might as well be written on my forehead in big black letters, as I'm terribly transparent. I don't hold things back. Ever. There's just no point. I do try to hold onto the more negative ones long enough to phrase them well, but if it's in my head, it's generally out my mouth shortly afterward.
I tried squashing down my feelings in my first marriage, and ended up in teary meltdowns about every other year. He promised to do better, or differently, and I blamed myself and suffered in silence for the next couple years, then erupted again. I don't do that anymore. It didn't save my first marriage, and I refused to go into this marriage doing the same things and hoping for different results. It's worked so far.
If there is anything that Corey and I do well for our relationship, it's almost always because one or both of us did it badly with our previous marriages. I also figured out that saying what needs saying quickly, without letting it fester, made for a much less stressful dialogue than waiting for a year or two. No meltdowns if I go ahead and say what's on my mind soon. Not always fun, but better than a knock-down, drag-out, all-out battle.
Read everyone's posts, but not a ton to say about anything except that I like your planting table, Pip, and that was a really good buy!
Hope it is or was a lovely Monday for everyone,
Cheers,

I hope it's okay to jump in here. I've been on MFP since 2012. I'm now almost 52....working at getting healthy after a long, long battle with chronic illness (I'm in remission).
I'm hoping to find a community of women my age who are on the same journey. I've never really used the community here until now.
Anyway - I'll try to go back and read and get a feel for the group here.
To introduce myself:
My name is Rosilind. I'm a Washington/Oregon native living in Croatia for 20 years. I met and married my husband (Bosnian refugee) and we have two sons: Almost 15 and 13. We live in the country about 20 minutes outside of Zagreb.
I am a writer/blogger and virtual assistant. I homeschool. I love learning, reading, cooking, baking, gardening, walking....and most recently card making. I also love listening to podcasts.
I am doing keto and intermittent fasting, as it is what helped put my chronic illness in remission. Finally after more than 10 years, I feel better than I did in my 20s!9 -
Also - it seems I perhaps did use the community - as it says I have 15 posts. That must have been eons ago. LOL! Look at MFP making a liar out of me!3
-
Carol - glad your DH went to the ER and got diagnosed. Hope the meds get him fixed up quickly. Neighbor Roger's son has been in a Seattle hospital ICU for nearly a week now, pneumonia. He's in an induced coma and intubated, he's only in his 50's. Not sure where this nastiness came from, if it was a cold or bronchitis that was let go too long perhaps.
I hope all of these price increases for things we use and need wind down soon. $50 a month is a steep jump for your internet. I think my internet is locked in as long as I live here. No matter what, I am so dependent on grabbing the Wi-Fi that it's become a necessity here too.
Yesterday I took a look at some past years' electric bills. Even with the woodstove being used in the mornings, my DH was always so chilly due to his bad circulation and we still had big bills during winter months. I've been able to trim it down since he passed as I don't mind a chilly house, plus I rarely use the oven or clothes dryer - I hang items to dry, and it keeps moisture in the air. My electricity rates are due to go up by 7% next year.
Annie - sorry to hear about your tummy this morning. Hope the tea gets things settled.
Barbie - thank you for the book recommendations, I just put holds on both of Pooley's books. Like you, I endeavor to give thanks throughout the day, every day. And, as we've mentioned before, the more we give thanks, the more we have to give thanks for.

Rosilind, Welcome. If you read through the posts, you'll find that you have a lot in common with others. I have been part of this community since age 62 and the support and encouragement of these women has helped me lose 50 pounds and keep it off for years. I read the thread every morning while I eat my breakfast. Sometimes I join the conversation and sometimes I listen and learn. I have some good habits that are the result of things I've learned here

Welcome, Roz in Croatia! We're glad to have you, and you'll find a few Europeans and lots of folks here from the PNW, as well. There's a bookmark at the top, and you can always find the group through the Community tab in the Motivation and Support area. If you're familiar with MFP, hopefully you'll be able to find your way back to us. Glad you're here, enjoy getting to know us through your read-through. We're a chatty bunch, but lots of support here. A few of us are also dealing with chronic illnesses, as well (congrats on getting to remission!) and all the impacts those illnesses have as we try to get and stay healthy.
Well done to all our weekly check-in folks, sounds like everyone's doing well. I'm pleased that my weight is averaging about 156 this month. I've got myself to the point where I only enter my weight on the Fitbit app on Mondays now, but haven't broken the habit of actually weighing every day. I've just successfully de-emphasized its impact on my mood. The good thing about getting this old is that I can't remember what it was yesterday if I don't write it down! 👀😹
Just got finished with Christmas--I pulled two presents out of their Amazon wishlists and got them in progress for shipping for each of the grands living with their mom, and sent cash for the one who's living with his dad and nearly 14. Plus I got Corey a present ordered from Amazon while I was at it, and it should be in sometime this week. He said he found something on my wishlist and sent it, as it was on Black Friday sale from Amazon. Kinda thrilled that he did - he's not much on gift giving, but evidently Amazon let him know that my wish list item was on sale! Had no idea they did that...
Anyway, that takes care of Christmas, as far as I'm concerned. That and one other item I got on Walmart's Black Friday sale pretty well spends out the budget for Christmas. Always glad when it's done, no need to keep it in the upfront worry box.
Later, y'all,
Love,

Heather, when you know, you know Happy for you and Johnny. Brava for the walk and the strengthened muscles firing! Yours to Tracy about journaling and hard conversations. Wisdom.
Lisa you go gal! Envy you your building skills. So organized and accessible, well done! Joe would rough out stuff for me if I asked but it would be more of the “git ‘er done” style than what I had in mind. Thank goodness for retail therapy! Your insight about our guys prodding us, considering irritated attention better than inattention, bingo! Took me a long time to learn to laugh those pokes off, still not 100%. Way to peel off that “little lady” wart! Ick for the vertigo and gut. Egg is clearly telling you that resistance is futile. “Just nose water”?
Michele really hope the splint brings you relief. Not being able to walk is so bad for your bone density. “…the unmentionables”
Mo heartbreaking history. ((hugs)) Granny gowns and 18 pregnancies your grandma. Keep talking, really like getting to know you.
Barbie I complain about medical specialists 3 hrs away, why did your friend have go from WA state to TX for knee replacement?
Okie you were down for 2-1/2 years? 7-1/2 years to recover?? Yikes!
Sue you were without power from Wednesday to Saturday, then the furnace gave out? ((hugs))
Ginny way belated happy birthday. that happy little carrot top!
Machka back when I was working, I’d often wake exhausted and shaken from nightmares. Made me grateful that I got to get up and go to work. ;}
Rita how disheartening to hear that your back won’t get better, nothing short of pain management shots. (gentle hugs held extra long) Raw cranberry? Yow, that’s tart! Truly inspiring yoga and steps. Well done! Fingers X’d for favorable cardio appointment.
Beth good to see you popping in! ((hugs)) for your mom’s angry episode and all the funerals.
Rebecca great pic of Navy sons!
Allie what a little punkin’!
Tracey sorry Rodger wasn’t joking and was being lazy. Thankful he changed his mind. Those plates made me laugh, thanks for sharing! Bravissima for your supreme show of control. Whatever possesses people to rearrange other people’s cupboards?!? SMH.
Lanette hope your lower back feels better soon.
Pip the potting bench. Enjoy!
Carol thankful you DH went to the ER, prayers his recovery is quick and complete.
Welcome @roz_of_2_boys, Rosalind in Croatia!
Learning to drive and first car: Mama tried to teach me how to drive in the family Oldsmobile Cutlass, standard, 3 on the steering column. Our personalities did not make this successful. Papa bought a 1958 VW bug, 4 on the floor, and taught me to drive it. We both struggled getting it into reverse (push down then move left and back), but eventually I could even drive it up the San Francsico hills, feathering the clutch at those scary, top of the hill, stop signs.
Been sitting way too long, time go get up and move!
Gratitudes:
Monday-Joe really liked test run of roasted brussels sprouts. Good thing, we’ve got LOTS!
Sunday-dry travel to church despite forecast.
Saturday-watching Shadow romp along the banks of the Winchuck, digging in the sand for rocks, such joy! Kept Mooch on leash, don’t trust his recall… yet!
Friday-Made to chiropractor, bank, Freddie’s and home before the storm really broke.
Decluttering challenge Day 45/30 Off season clothes45-packed up all the warm weather clothes, AND sandals. Didn’t purge any but will when unpacking next summer.Later, lighter, lovelies!

Barbara , my friend could have had her surgery at the local hospital but her brothers and their families are in Waco and she travels there a lot so she consulted a doctor in Waco and was able to schedule the surgery sooner there than locally and have the luxury of recuperating at her brothers house.
I took the new car out for a few more errands today and learned to use the cruise control. One step at a time.

Barbara - Yep. I was deemed too young for double knee replacements so we tried shots. They helped enough for me to attend events, holidays, etc but I would be down in between and barely walking. It’s all over now and I can walk wherever I want.

The one thing I am very terrible at is speaking up and telling how I am feeling- Have always been something I just kept to myself. I think, one of these days it is all going to come out and boy will he be shocked.
I always say, I am like Rex from Toy Story- I don't like confrontation.
But, not speaking up from the beginning has led to him just treating me any way he wants and not seeing that there is a problem. I have talked to him a few times, says it will change but it doesnt.
It is hard to speak my opinion when the few times I try, if it is not in agreement with him, he tells me how wrong I am.
Glad I get a break for a bit this evening- have class.
Chat with you later.
