Burrr!!! Below 0*C most of the day. Not used to these temperatures. Main roads were relatively clear, but our road was icy all day.

My daughter's in LA Airport, said they could smell the smoke from the wildfires long before they landed, and landed in a haze of smoke. Four more hours and they will be back in the air, so still ten hours from home in Hawaii. My heart will eventually recede from my throat... Perhaps when I wake tomorrow and they're home.

I am sure she did land in haze. The Palisades fire, which is nearest is over 15,000 acres now. There is one near Pasadena that is over 10,000 and a lot of smaller ones around, so there is a lot of smoke in the Los Angeles area.
Down here, some small ones popped up today, but nothing over 10 acres so far. We are not getting nearly the wind they are up there. In fact, right now there is very little movement in the tree branches.
Glad the kids are back with your daughter safely!

Dang, Tina, you're way too close! And thanks. Wish they were here, but just glad they're with her and safe. Small mercies, glad heart.7

Best friend's dad news.My best friend's dad, unfortunately, is in the hospital and has been since New Year's Day, after two falls at home. They won't release him to go home, as he is no longer able to take care of himself.
She can't bear the thought of putting him in a nursing home, but can't take care of him - he's a huge man, even with all the flesh fallen away from him, and it takes two or sometimes three nurses just to get him from a wheelchair into a hospital bed. Keeping him cleaned up isn't possible for one person, and he can't clean himself.
She knows it will break his heart if he can't go home, and listening to her heart break at the thought is hard. Lots of old baggage, and a relationship between them that was broken and then repaired decades later. So much pain in her voice, and I can do... nothing. Realistic advice isn't in my repertoire, and she couldn't hear me if it was.
I'm wiped, after four stores in three hours, and will be accomplishing nothing else today. Luckily, nobody cares if I accomplish nothing, so there's that...
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
We totally understand how your friend feels. So much the same as how dh feels, even down to the cleaning of a parent.
We went and saw a place that was referred to us by the social worker where MIL is now. Without going to the one closer to us, dh has picked this place. They will take care of all the transport/paperwork/etc.
The cost is $4000 a month. It is a private home with 4 other patients. She will share a room. The other lady will be moving in, from the same facility, on Friday. She went over and met MIL today and is willing to take her so that is big. With her pension and SS, he will just need to take an additional $2000 out of her saving each month. It will last long enough. She will be 89 in less than 2 months.
The biggest thing is he knows he can't take care of her anymore, even with hiring help to go to her house. He still would like to do that if she does get better but I don't see that happening.

My friend has decided to tell him that it is a rehab facility that is aimed at getting him in good enough shape to go home. While this is technically true, none of the medical establishment feel it is actually possible that he can still regain that much of his physical abilities. I'm so glad your DH has decided she needs to be in care. I hope it works out for all your sakes, I really do.5 -
Whidislander wrote: »Whidislander wrote: »mcmillonmail wrote: »Hello Wonderful friends,
I just finished catching up on your lives. You all have been tremendously busy. I decluttered the top of my dresser and my bathroom window. All the Christmas decor is pretty much put away. My mom's tree is still up. I got a call from the nursing home, and they want me to take my mom to the dentist. I called and explained that she gave the dentist a hard time and that they thought it was better to treat her for pain and let her be. They are continuing to call. I asked DH to explain that she didn't care for her teeth and refused to brush them. Even when I was little, I told her not to kiss me cause she had bad breath. When the dentist said to leave her be, I removed her dental insurance. I will see how much it will cost to take her to UMMC School of Dentistry. It is hard cause my mom doesn't want a bath, let alone a teeth cleaning. I know my dentist will work with her. Paying 4800 a month doesn't leave a lot of money left.
DS needs a new computer for school, so I will see if he can get a line of credit. DH told me he noticed I made many changes to the house now that he is gone. I told him that it is nice to make everything look nice, but I also told him that I had no input on what the condo in Chicago looks like. I had a lovely weekend at work. I had some great kids. I had a two-year-old who told me I was mean after I flushed her line. Then I had her giggling. I tried to teach this mom that she could not make her child wait for hours to eat—breastfed babies nurse as needed. Then we noticed his weight was in the 0.5 percentile, so we told her she needed to breastfeed more or go to formula. I think she was listening to some goofball on TikTok. It is nice having DS here. I chuckle, listening to Rose barking at him to do what she wants. I warned him that Rose could be bossy. Then he argues back at her, and then he gives in. I aim to read more books, travel, get my certification, get my passport, work on my Spanish, and lose at least 35 pounds, but 75 would be better. I want to get back to exercising. Do something each week that makes me happy.
Welcome, Bridget and KJ!
Flea, I love your money tree!
Kylia, I got your message, and I sent you one.
Debbie, you are handling the situation well. Let your DH handle it all, and you do your own thing. I wondered why your MIL's dog can't move in with you. The cats may get ticked off about it. I avoid matters that deal with my MIL and let the 3-4 kids decide.
Heather, I wish my kids had a relationship with my kids like you do with your grandkids. My kids would cry when they had to visit.
Lisa, it is cold here in Mississippi, and I know it is colder in Arkansas. Are there any updates on how your daughter is doing? Are they back in Hawaii yet?
Barbie, I went back to read about the change in cars and genuinely believe he was looking out for you.
Pip, How are you doing with all of your fur babies?
Dr. Katie, I hope you will heal fast.
Rita, Lanette, and Carol, I hope you are well.
Rebecca, how is your hand? Is the bruising gone?
Allie, you had a lovely celebratory party at the restaurant and for Miles's birthday. How are Kyle and Tracey doing? Are they working it out?
Michelle, do you work out with friends or alone?
Margaret, that was a beautiful painting. I love the flowers you bring to post.
Rori, where are you going to travel to this year?
Tracey, Roger would be more receptive if you talked to him in a loving voice. My DH is not handy at all, and it is up to me to make repairs. My aunt taught me. My dad relied on me to fix things in the house. If I couldn't do it, we called someone in. When my mom left us when I was 9, I had to do laundry, write checks out to pay the bills and make calls to get a repair guy in. I had to study how checks were written in the past, and my dad would mail out the bills. That is why when my DH moved to Chicago, I was okay. My Dh hires a guy to mow the lawn and rake leaves. My dad always had done the same. It is interesting how we had different experiences.
Machka, I am inspired to visit Australia and New Zealand. When it warms up in Mississippi, I will buy my bike.
Barbara, I am so glad they rescheduled your appointment for safer weather.
Welcome back, Carla! I look forward to getting to know you.
My orthotic is bothering me and causing a lot of pain in my hip, so I am not wearing it. Hopefully, I can come in and order one for the other foot. My headaches have been waking me up, so I put on an ice pack and went back to sleep. Aging is not easy.
You all stay safe and warm.
XO,
Mo from Mississippi
We are doing great with the kids. They are dream kids, they don’t react to other dogs coming towards them. They walk really good on leash. They get along with each other.
I just clarified with someone on what I can or can not eat before my colonoscopy. It’s in 3 days so I will be living on chicken or beef broth, boiled eggs and tea. Anxious to see how much more weight I lose, lololol

Oh Pip do you have Bag Balm? That is a life saver for me during the "elimination phase" as a barrier ointment on your backside. It comes in a pretty green tin with a cow on the front at most pharmacies. Its called bag balm because farmers used it on cows udders to stop them from getting chapped. Worked so well we just took the tin in the house over the years.😁👍🏼
Hope the procedure is smooth and uneventful.👍🏼

We lived on a farm, had all the animals. We had bag balm all over the place. We put it on our cows udders after we would milk them. It smelled good too. I’ve had colonoscopies before, never had a problem back there.
Look at you all seasoned and shyt....😂😁👍🏼

RE: EGGS
I can have them today, tonight will be my last meal. Tomorrow only clear liquids, no solids. Then start taking that stuff, then on the 10th I get a camera up my butt! I’ve been awake before so I can see my colon, pretty interesting. Of course I was numb down there so I didn’t feel anything.

That is what he is telling his mom too. She keeps saying she wants to go to the place we had his aunt(her sister in law) but we told her unless she can walk and take care of herself, she can't go there.

Another cold day and talking about more snow tomorrow. I have an appointment at employment office in the morning and then home.
Barbie--Glad your friend went with you to pickup Jake's ashes.
Pip--Good luck with colonoscopy. Because of family history I have one every five years.
Heather--John is a great gift for the grandchildren. Great news about your brother's CT. Hope he enjoys his massage.
Rita--Hope you are feeling better.
Lisa--So glad to hear grandkids are back with their mom and on the way home. Since he is in the service will they do something since this seems to be a problem everytime he sees the kids?
Deb--great newa about DH finding a place for his mom. It won't be easy for him, but the best for both of them.

Good morning!
The growling continues! Locking in bathroom didn't work. They both got their cones off with lots of noise, then Cali was standing and scratching at the glass. I put hankies back on and fell asleep with Tori on my chest and Cali at my feet. I will be closing curtains and shutting them out of my bedroom for the day. Hopefully they won't jump around more than necessary.
Mo That one is Tori (for Tortise coloring). Cali is my Calico. At the vet yesterday, there was a dog called Junior and it was a she! That is what her children wanted to call her.
I just got my first purrs from Tori this morning! DH can get Cali purring but normally they are few and far behind for her.
Barbara The worst he can crash into is the yard. There really aren't any trees near the driveway. And he doesn't drive on the road. He can see partially out of on eye. Most people who meet him don't realize he is blind.
DH Some have asked about him hunting....he is the safest hunter I know. He hunts areas he has been hunting for years with friends that have hunted with him for years. He has a powerful scope on his guns and rarely misses because he has to be positive before pulling the trigger. He really only needs me to drive and prepare food if stove is involved. He can't see the blue flame to be able to tell if burners are on. He is extremely independent. He will cut grass, skin a deer, hunt, shave, and other self care. I try to remember to let him do as much as possible. We have 10x magnifiers everywhere. He carries a magnifier with him.
Thought I submitted this this morning. ..oops. Home from work now, dinner done, kitchen cleaned and mopped, kittens fed. The growling has finally stopped. Yay! Back to a peaceful household. They slept most of day, pooped, and have eaten well.
Cali hasn't slept on me other than in bed since she was a small kitten! She was actually purring and kitten pawing!
Debbie and Lisa I truly believe that in both situations, that white lie sounds perfect. As peaceful of a move as possible. That brings some comfort to the caregivers.Debbie I hope your DH finds peace with this decision.
Katie I hope your healing is going well.
I managed to get Nevaeh to get over her fear of answering phones today at the shop. She did really well! We only have battery powered snowblowers left! If we manage to get more snow on Friday, those should go.
Migraine and bloodwork today. Thankful kitties are playing, eating, and resting.
I should send this before my novel gets longer.
Much love!

I started making some notes a couple of days ago but couldn’t keep up for the last couple of days.
I woke up to go to work on Monday and went to look at the switch we felt needed replaced on the furnace and at that time the lights were flashing another code. I decided that I better call someone. So I called the company that does the manor. He agreed that both of these codes on their own were a warning that something wasn’t working properly. They come to look at it and it’s the motherboard. They told me they were surprised we had any heat all weekend as it shouldn’t have been working. The part and repair is $986. It’s not like I really had a choice in the matter. At least it wasn’t an emergency call out.
So I get home from work and while I’m making supper I hear something trying to start but failing. I had heard it on Sunday all day and thought that it was the furnace, except once I thought it was the fridge. I had even opened the fridge and checked and the fan was blowing so I didn’t really check anything.
I confirmed with Rodger that they had come back with the part and fixed the furnace, he said they had.
I was nervous, but opened the freezer and everything had thawed. It was still cold, but thawed. I wanted to cry.
I texted Kaitlyn and told her what had happened and her and Brodey immediately started looking for a used one for me. They even lent me the money to buy one.
I spent all evening on Monday cooking all of the meat I had in the freezer and put everything in totes out on the deck.
Then last night Brodey and Rodger got back from picking up the new to me fridge shortly after 7pm and I needed to clean it, and switch the way the doors opened.
I gave up at 935 and put the food in but knew I had to do more this evening.
Rodger went out today and found out that I need a kit to switch the handles so they have been ordered and will be here in 3 weeks.
Tonight I organized the fridge a bit, and cleaned the kitchen. I was done by 630 though and took a bath and I’m now catching up with you wonderful ladies.
I’m about to go sit and just watch tv though.

Was able to get to the gym today. Did a spinning workout. My headphones needed to be charged so the only sound was coming out of my phone. I apologized to the instructor and asked him to apologize to the others in the class since I won’t be there Friday.
I just realized that this month is one year since I’ve had to put up with Jerry. Sometimes life can be real good
Lanette – no, I haven’t heard from Annie. Last time she did pop in right after I sent her a message so maybe I’ll do that again because it HAS been a while since we’ve heard from her.
Pip – believe it or not, you were in my dreams last night. Not even sure what you were doing, but I do remember you standing in my kitchen. I’ve never had a problem with my colonoscopies, either
Heather – so, so happy for your brother. What wonderful news!
Lisa – so happy for your daughter. Took long enough, eh? How sad about your best friend’s dad.
Deb – so glad for you that dh has decided to have MIL in a home. Hope it works out with the other lady in her room. Who knows? Maybe she’ll be a good influence on her. I hope so, I really do
At bowling tonight one of the ladies had a handwarmer. It was really good, want to check more out. I know that if I get one, I want it to have some sort of display as to how much battery life it has. That’s one thing that I don’t like about my headphones and portable DVD player. They don’t tell you how much battery power you have. So you don’t know if you’re low or out until it happens. I’m going to keep looking at the reviews on Amazon. I saw one that included a flashlight. I thought “I don’t need that, so why should I pay extra for it?”

Hello everyone,
Michelle, I am trying to understand. Do you have the headphones that plug into the device, and if so, how do you have the freedom to work out? I charge my headphones before starting my stretch at work, which works for me. I have Raycons, and I love them. When I went to the gym in Florida at the timeshare, they had the room with the steps and the equipment I needed locked. I asked how I could work out when everything was closed. They told me that was a good question that was never answered. So, I need to get started again. What I am trying to understand is, were you listening to music, your headset died, and your music played loudly on your phone? If so, they will get over it.
Deb, if DH brought MIL home and he stayed there at night, then you would be like my DH and me. Together but separately, you would be expected to help with the responsibilities. Can you imagine the verbal and mental abuse he would have to endure? I am an only child, so everything falls on me with my mom. Your DH is the only one living, so everything falls on you two. I think this facility is the best option and is reasonably priced. I pay 4800/mo for my mom. She does have her room. I hope your MIL doesn't mistreat her roommate.
Lisa, I am so happy your daughter is safe with her children. I know that situation was triggering for her. After that ordeal, she may need to see her therapist and the children, too. She needs to find out how to prevent that from happening again. Take his A-double S back to the court. That was ridiculous; she should have been reimbursed for what he did. Lisa, please don't overdo it out there. It is in the 20's in MS, so I know it is cold in Arkansas. By the way, I can tell that Corey is crazy about you. You are not old.
Pip, Yogi, and the pup next to him look so cute. I love Yogi's shirt. When I have my colonoscopy, they put me to sleep, but I wake up and look, which is fascinating.
Annie, I hope you are okay. I know your dad can be a handful.
Teri, Stay warm. I hope you have a nice fire in your fireplace. , I'm sending you prayers, too, if you need them.
Allie, tell sMiles I said Happy Birthday! I hope your endocrine appointment goes well. I have a feeling Delia will be smiling and a good girl.
Barbie, I am so thankful that you have someone with you to go to the funeral home for Jake's ashes.
Tracey, all I can say is that when it rains, it pours. I am glad that it worked out. May everything else, including your car, continue to work.
Kylia, I named Callie because I thought she was a calico, but she was a tortoiseshell cat. Oh well, she didn't mind.
Rebecca, I look forward to hearing how well the fasting is going. When I fast, it isn't intentional. I am too busy at work or prefer sleeping to eating at home.
Lately, I have been having trouble sleeping too long due to my severe migraines—ice packs for my head help, along with the plant guru stuff. Excedrine migraine and motrin also help. I may need to get on Tordal again.
Kay, relax and read some good books. The recovery period is the only time one can relax without guilt. So enjoy, cause soon you will have to go to PT. My friend Yolanda had to replace both knees and is now playing tennis again. I hope your recovery is pain-free.
Vicki, I know it is cold where you are. My MIL and FIL lived in NE, lost power in an ice storm, and moved to Florida.
Rita, your pictures are beautiful. That was a good bit of snow. We do not have snow here so far, but it is cold. My son and I agree on keeping the thermostat at 72 during the day and 65 at night to snuggle in the blankets. By the way, your DH has a detached retina and doesn't want it fixed. Soon, you can declutter his stuff, and he will not know because he will not see the change.
Heather, you and John make an excellent team. You compliment each other.
Well, I better go and make some tea and study. You all have a great night.

Lanette, what is Ezekiel Bread? Does it taste good? It is cheaper than the Royo bread that I purchased. Why are you cutting down on Caffeine? Are you having trouble sleeping? I am a tea drinker and switch to Decaffeinated tea three to four hours before bedtime. I also avoid high-caffeine drinks like Red Bull.
Carol, how are you doing? How is DH doing now that he is home? I hope all is well with you.

Lisa: Good news about you grandkids being back with daughter.
Rebecca: Hope you’re feeling better.
Heather: We are the same weather wise. Our snow should go fairly quickly. It must have been a relief about brother’s scan.
We had our first real snowfall in quite a while early this morning. Just about an inch but it looks very pretty.
I’m supposed to go to flower arranging after lunch, so hoping the roads clear up before then.

The sun is just coming up, and temperature is rising, but there are clouds massed on the eastern horizon. There is open countryside beyond the houses at the end of the road.
Just watched the BBC coverage of the wildfires. Very scary. Hope everyone is safe.

The snow is gone and the sun is shining. I decided to forgo my morning's writing and go out to the local shops. I can rarely write more than three days in a row.
Popped in at the milk shop, and then went to the butcher to ask about haggis. They only had small ones, and huge ones, and I want something in between. We will be four people, but I like to have generous servings. So I put one on order for 7-8. Also bought a pork pie.
The fencing people should be coming today and the next door neighbour is meant to be coming to unlock his back gate for them. They are away on the other side of Brighton at the moment, sorting out his MIL's estate.

Mo- the health food store finally raised their price on the Ezekial bread a dollar more per loaf than Walmart. I knew it couldn't last. It's high-protein and high fiber, made from sprouted grains, not just regular flour. I love the taste - it's "hearty" for sure.
I'll try to post a link here. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Food-for-Life-Ezekiel-4-9-Sprouted-Whole-Grain-Bread-24oz-20-CT-Bag-Frozen/196260377?classType=REGULAR&athbdg=L1200&from=/search
The cutting down on Caffeine is because I had 2 spells of light-headedness that might be related to all of the "high test" coffee I was drinking. Felt like I was going to faint. Syncope, not POTS though. I know when I would drink too much of it (like 3 or 4 cups in a couple hours) I'd get arrythmia. I went to see Dr. Lisa about it, she listened to my heart a long time and said she heard 2 premature heartbeats. Decided I needed to wear a 30-day heart monitor. Anyhow she said all the caffeine could be a contributor.

I have an electrician coming next week to install new smoke detectors. Since we are switching from Kiddie to First Alert the wire harnesses have to be changed. Apparently they need to be synced too. Can WE do it? Probably, but would rather have someone who knows electricity do it. We have two of the six pulled down right now. They are over 10 yo and two were continuing to chirp and go off. I do need to pick up a separate carbon monoxide detector. The old one was with the ceiling smoke one. I told DH by the time that one went off we would be dead as it should be towards the ground. So that is in the plan for next week.
Kittens aren't happy that curtains are closed, but it is too cold. The curtains and blinds closed help with heating. May slightly open a couple for some sunshine.....
It is so nice to have my loving kitties back. I will keep their tall cat tower locked up for another week, but they are still jumping on furniture. They are much more resilient than I was after hysterectomy!
I LOVED the sunshine yesterday. Another 2-4 inches of snow forecast for tomorrow.
Need to sort laundry this morning, go to grocery tonight(ugh). I truly might do pick up for groceries.....
Mo I don't think our pets care what we call them as long as they are loved! Liquid IV has helped my migraines lessen. I am pretty sure kittens have too. Yesterday's did need migraine meds, but they actually worked quickly which I consider a plus!
Lisa I am glad your grands are back with their Mom! That is just a horrible situation.
I am not moving for a few minutes as I have Tori on my chest and Cali on my feet in the bed. Oops, just as I typed that DH came in. No more kitties in lap.
More later.
Stay warm and safe!
Make the best choice you can in the moment.
Much love and respect,
Kylia in COLD but will be sunny today Ohio5 -

A few of you have commented on the "why" behind the exercise.
Why I like exercising ...
- to improve my chances of being mobile as I age.
- to improve my chances of being able to assist my husband.*
- because I like being and feeling fit.
- to accomplish something.
- to meet a challenge.
- to be able to do more.**
- to get away from sitting in front of my computer.
- to have time to think without all the distractions of modern life.
- to deal with stress.
- because I love the time outside.
- because I enjoy it.
* Over Christmas, my husband had another fall. I couldn't see where he was and asked if he was all right. What I heard was a faint "my heart" ... apparently that was not what he said, but I got cold chills because I knew there was no way I could help him out of where he fell, especially given the fact that my fitness level has dropped off. He twisted his ankle and after a few minutes was able to limp out. But I started lifting weights again.
** I've listened to the "how I spent my Christmas" stories as we all return from our couple weeks off work over Christmas and the ones that got me thinking are the "I would have liked to do this or that, but just wasn't fit enough" stories. As much as possible, I don't want to have that barrier.

Heather ~ Great news from you brother and hope he continues to heal. Love the pics of Bea and Edie making the snow man.
Lisa ~ So glad for you that your daughter and the children are on their way home. Watching the news of the LA fires is so scary and hope the plane is able to take off safely.
Debbie ~ Wonderful news that MnL is being moved to a place where your DH may have some respite. If you can’t keep the dog with all the cats perhaps you could find someone to foster him.
Kylia ~ The two pretty cats are getting really big. Glad the growling stopped.
Vicki ~ Good luck at the employment office. Hope they have a job that is just right for you.
Tracey ~ So sorry about the furnace and fridge. Not a good start to the year.
Pip and Allie ~ Happy 11th BD to Yogi and 4th to Smiles!
My husband is doing as well as can be expected! I counted his medication yesterday and there are 20 in all. Sleeping in spurts as he thinks the heart meds are affecting his ability to rest (which Dr. Google confirmed could happen). In addition, he is sad and depressed and I can't blame him as being under so many restrictions can make you feel that way. I am feeling sad and depressed myself as I realize how much our life has changed over the last few years.
