Hi everyone, newbie here i know most of you guys are not doctors however here lately my blood sugar is dropping badly. Seems to be the more carbs and sugars I have the worse it is. Any suggestions on trying to reverse what I believe to be insulin resistance. I'm 35 and pretty active i eat decent but not enough and have ate ice cream every night for many years this will be the first thing I cut out

Hi there 😊
Try making more healthy choices when selecting your sugar content and also adding more protein to your diet. I am not a doctor but sounds like you are not fuelling your body properly and this is making you feel this way.
You say you’re active, how much are you working out ?

Your blood sugar will spike when you eat carbs and then drop. When you eat more carbs it will repeat. Everyone reacts differently to carbs but easily digestible carbs (sugar, processed foods) will cause a spike quicker and then you feel dreadful when it crashes.
Some tips to help: always eat carbs with protein and fats (sliced egg on toast for instance, nuts with raisins). Eat more complex carbs and cut out the pure sugar (ie some people find oats don’t spike their levels - others still do). Eat carbs with high fibre as that slows down digestion- fruit is a good example. Take a note of which foods cause the effect and start to adjust your diet.
I’m a carbaholic and have a diet high in carbs but some people find it makes them feel better to eat moderate or low carbs - it depends on you, what you eat and how you react.0 -
Do you wear a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) that allow someone to track their blood sugar in real time. How do you know your blood sugar is "dropping badly" I guess that is my question, or is this what your Doctor told you without offering any explanation?
Anyway, if your blood sugar is dropping well below base line after a higher carb and sugar meal that often indicates a few things.
It can be an indication of elevated HbA1c or fasting blood sugar which can further indicate insulin resistance and often does, if a diet indicates that possibility. Or it could indicate hyperinsulinemia where your fasting insulin is elevated and where the pancreas produces more than it needs responding to your diet in the general sense. This is like the canary in the coal mine where someones fasting insulin is elevated but their HbA1c is well within the normal range and most people with insulin resistance will display hyperinsulinemia.
I would check with your PCP and get a fasting blood sugar test, an HbA1c and possibly an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and a fasting insulin test. If the PCP knows what they're doing then you should get to the bottom of it and if not hopefully they get you a referral to someone that can.2 -
without knowing what it is dropping to would make it hard to determine what is 'bad' if you are going below 70 constantly you may have Hypoglycemia and need to talk to your doctor.0
