Has anyone found a supplement (vitamin, mineral, herbal) that made a positive impact on you?

    I change up supplements sometimes, but right now it's:

    - Vitamin D
    - Calcium
    - Magnesium
    - Omega-3s
    - B-12
    - K-2 MK-7
    - Zinc
    - Creatine

    D because I live in the North and also because I have osteoporosis; Calcium because osteoporosis; magnesium for a variety of reasons (sleep, digestive, blah blah blah); Omega-3s mainly because I'm vegetarian and therefore don't eat the good food sources of the best types of Omega-3s; K-2 mostly for bone health; B-12 as an insurance policy because vegetarian (and aging); creatine for athletic and cognitive reasons; zinc is a current experiment. Yeah, that's a lot, and it's on top of a generally nutrient-dense eating style.

    Some of those were recommended by my doctors (the osteoporosis specialists), some my choices based on looking at potential common shortfalls or the like. Do I think they help? Varies, honestly. If I keep taking them, it's because of the doctors, self-perceived benefits, or self-perceived potential shortfalls, blood test results, or . . . an experiment, now and then.

    I'm not cynical about doctors like some are. They're human, not all-knowing, and nutrition isn't generally in their wheelhouse, in fact they don't typically have much training in it. People seem to find that shocking because nutrition is important for health . . . but exercise is also important for health, and I don't expect my doctor to give me advice about that beyond the basic "minimum 150 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise per week and a couple days of strength exercise". Same concept, I don't expect nutritional advice much beyond "Eat in a well-balanced, nutritious, calorie-appropriate way". If I want more, that's the registered dietitian's wheelhouse. I've consulted one in the past.

    If you have a deficiency they might make an impact. If no then they will do nothing.

    While technically true, @yirara, that response is not terribly helpful.

    Every morning I start my day with 12oz of water mixed with powdered vitamin C for my immune system, and fish oil capsules (Omega-3) for my knees. The fish oil in particular has made a world of difference for my qualify of life. I have knees subject to painful stiffness, possibly hereditary arthritis, which I tried various joint supplements (glucosamine) with limited effect. But the Omega-3's have been a God-send world-changer, virtually eliminating all knee pain and allowing me to bend my knees, under weight, through an entire range of motion.

    Glucosamine and fish oil have done really good things for my joints, even my dodgy knee cartlidge. Collagen has done wonders for my nails and hair, and I hope is doing a little something maybe for my skin elasticity.

    I'm old. B12 and vitamin d for me. I was deficient in both. More energy, stamina.
    I also take lutein and zeaxanthin. Macular degeneration runs in the family.

    Thanks! I have some issues with my knees being sore during/after workouts as well.
    I started taking D3+K2 considering in Ohio it’s going to be pretty challenging to get my vitamin D3 naturally lol It has done a lot for me.
    I’ve been really interested in vitamins & supplements here lately. I love the approach of finding the solution not just keeping side effects at bay.
    I was just curious as to what others were experiencing.

    Oh, I also take Vit D because I'm chronically deficient, and I take Magnesium the evening after a workout to avoid the worst of DOMS, it's a lifesaver.

    I’ve heard tons of great things about magnesium & all of the benefits that comes with it. I read that most of the population is deficient because our farm land is been overly farmed & the soil lacks in nutrients.
    My doctor has never brought up any kind of vitamins or minerals to me. Which I find odd.

    I don't find that odd, I think people overestimate the interest doctors have in making you healthier. They're really there to treat you when you're sick, and get you back to baseline, it's a rare doctor with the knowledge, time, and vested interest to actually proactively work with you to improve your health to optimal. Unless they've done extra study, doctors do one subject on nutrition and that's it. They truly aren't experts.

    I don't find that odd, I think people overestimate the interest doctors have in making you healthier. They're really there to treat you when you're sick, and get you back to baseline, it's a rare doctor with the knowledge, time, and vested interest to actually proactively work with you to improve your health to optimal. Unless they've done extra study, doctors do one subject on nutrition and that's it. They truly aren't experts.

    My recent experience with doctors (last 3 years) is that they're only interested in what medicare/insurance approves.

    I’ve been watching Dr. Berg on YouTube & it’s really opened my eyes. No hate against doctors, they are amazing people & incredibly knowledgeable, but they lack nutritional training & more & more doctors are coming out to change that. I think that is where we should start, baseline nutrition..I know that is a ton more information but it would greatly improve the health of America. It’s not the doctors fault honestly , it’s a systematic problem. I’m just happy my eyes have been opened to it.

    The only supplement I have taken is Ferrograd C - an iron supplement with Vitaamin C - I wasnt low in Vitamin C but it helps absorb iron better.

    This was years ago when I was tired and a blood test showed mild aneamia - on Dr's advice I took iron supplements for 6 months and then my blood levels came up and I stopped taking them

    Blood tests have been ok since - coupled with no longer getting periods, my iron levels have stayed normal

    So, yes it had a positive impact.

    But not taking anything now as no deficiencies or medical reasons to do so.

    I take IC Ferrous sulfate, only supplement ever prescribed to me by my doctor. I only take it every other day because I’m honestly not sure if I need it anymore. My doctor hasn’t asked for me todo a blood test since I had my son 4 yrs ago.
    I’ve been anemic most of my life & I eat a 95% vegetarian (meat once a week). So I figure I need some. But I do get afraid of it being too much for me.

    I have been taking creatine as well
    I also found a capsule formula of
    Turmeric
    Ginger
    Mornings
    Boswellia
    Saffron
    Cinnamon
    Black pepper
    Ashwaganda
    Tart cherry
    Holy basil
    Garlic
    Those are all in a capsule together
    I haven’t really noticed a difference in taking this formulation yet but I love the idea of using natural ingredients to boost my health.
    Also I suffer with extreme anxiety but I cannot take any addictive pharmaceutical drugs, Ashwaganda 600 mg a day has been a huge game changer for me. I don’t feel sick to my stomach with anxiety over EVERYTHING. I am still occasionally anxious but it is still so much better.

    It depends on the doctor. Doctors with medical knowledge and experience with functional nutrition exist. I think it’s finding the right doctor.

    Ps - Dr Berg isn’t a physician, he has no medical degree, he is a chiropractor.

    I’d fact check him, he has about 6 active lawsuits against him, one of which is forcing his staff to practice Scientology and a few class action suits against his products.

    I follow over a dozen doctors along with quite a few clinical nutritional scientists and I'm not a big fan of Dr.Berg now although he did show up on my algorithm quite early on and did get to know his style and I do have to say that most of his information is on par with many other "doctors" but like a lot of doctors who never really got any actual nutritional science training you have to begin to weed them out which I've done with him. He does though have some good information. He's basically an influencer that sells a line of products and himself.
