It tracks all three macros- protein, fat, and carbs.

The premium features are outlined in this MFP page Free Calorie Counter, Diet & Exercise Journal | MyFitnessPal

I have paid for premium for the last several years. The main reason I upgraded was to get rid of ads. I use MFP everyday and the ads were really annoying to me. In my opinion, premium is worth it just for the elimination of ads. The other factor I enjoy about premium, is whenever I click on anything in MFP, it is available to me. I never get the lock icon to indicate that the particular feature is not available. As a result, I find it a more friendly user experience.

Certainly, no one needs to go to premium to track food or participate in the community or track your metrics. All of these features are available in the free app. By far, these three aspects of the app are the three that I use the most.

Premium doesn't track more macros - as stated earlier, there exist only 3, protein, fats, carbs. It doesn't track more micronutrients, either.

In the nutrition realm, what it does do is give a much more detailed set of options for setting nutrition goals and tracking how various foods we eat contribute to accomplishing those goals.

I have premium. I started with free MFP, used it all through loss and the early months of maintenance. I'd always encourage a new person to start with free MFP, and learn the basics of food logging and tracking, see if that suits them. Those basics are identical between free and premium.

Once they know how to use MFP, it will be much easier to understand that list of premium features, and decide whether they're worth the money

The only exceptions would be people who emphatically and definitely need some feature that's only in premium and they know it, people who take a thing seriously only if they pay money for it, or people who have slow connections and not loading ads makes a difference in usability. Otherwise, I'd suggest starting with free MFP.
