How Can Anyone Eat This Stuff?

I've never eaten fast food on a regular basis in my life. I really cut back the last 10 years or so and haven't had McDonald's for probably 5 years. Yesterday I was with a family member who needed to eat something to take some medication. Nothing else around and we went to McDonalds. I would have skipped but I hadn't eaten in 7-8 hours and needed something. I got a Quarter Pounder with Cheese Value Meal.
The thing about made me gag. I ate a few of the fries and threw them away.
NEVER AGAIN.

Was it the factory farmed meat or the processed cheese that got you? Maybe the additional helping of soybean oil and high fructose corn syrup? Or the extra helping of Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate on your fries?
All lovingly sourced from the lowest bidder.

Prepared Monday to serve reheated Thursday, with enough sauce to try to disguise it all.

How can anyone eat this stuff? Because tastes differ.
I don't eat that stuff, don't think it's tasty, let alone "hyperpalatable". Some people don't agree with me. Meh.
Companies give the public the kinds of food that many people vote with their dollars to say that they want. If en masse we wanted shelf-stable single-serve organic roasted brussels sprouts in ecologically responsible packaging, and would pay for it, those packages would be on every spinner rack and at every fast food joint.
Collectively, we don't want that, we want cheap burgers, fries, pop and/or a so-called milkshake that never melts even after it gets warm.
Popular isn't the same as good, let alone good for a body. I'd say the same about popular music, popular books, popular anything: Not necessarily the best of the best, but popular anyway.
Sure, part of it is that the ads tell us that all the happy, pretty people eat that food, use that perfume or deodorant, dance to that music, whatever. But that's not the whole story.

I might get something from a Macs about once a year while on the road in a pinch for time. Usually, I get a classic cheeseburger and small fry. I recall enjoying it about 6 months ago!

I’m just going to say - at least US fast food is fast. In the UK “fast food” arrives slowly, is therefore cold and is… kind of pointless? I am also not a fan of most junk food (never had it as a kid - lived too rural and didn’t have the money) so my palate has never adjusted. But when I’ve needed food and I’m out, there seems no point at all trying to get a burger or KFC. Tesco ready meal is much quicker 🤣🤣

I remember a trainer on a show once taking a few bites of some fast food and spitting them out with such a face expression of disdain, followed by a rant about the taste, ingredient/nutrition quality and whatnot.
If everyone felt that way, the fast food places would be out of business or change what they serve.
Clearly many people are buying... and with rising obesity rates, wonder if and when people will shift away from junk/fast food. (Or excess eating.)

Given that the fast food industry earned 800 billion... yes... billion… dollars in 2021, your opinion must be in the minority🤷♀️

800 billion. Nearing a trillion, yeesh.

It's an acquired taste😁
My mom worked full time in the 80s and was a terrible cook, so I grew up eating stuff like that all the time. I pretty much lived on fast food and Stouffers. It seems, for me, like it was so tasty back then and then very slowly over the 45 years started tasting worse and worse, so that I haven't noticed.
Anyway, join me on the 🚫 fast food 2025 challenge!😋

I like some fast food.
I know that isnt a popular opinion on here where there is a bit of holier than thou disdain to people who eat it.
I'm not a fan of burgers but I don't mind the fries or KFC wraps or salad bowls, i like Subway
of course I don't eat unlimited amounts in unlimited frequency but once in a while I do and I enjoy it.

Totally agree. McDonald's fries, when done right, are really good (to me, amyway).

Are you in the USA?
The USA has some of the weakest food regulations in the world.
I'm Canadian. We are RVers and have travelled across Canada and some parts of the USA. Sometimes, when you are pulling a trailer and have four hungry kids in the back of the vehicle, sometimes you do not have any other choice but to make a fast food stop. We have definitely noticed that the exact same meal in Canada vs USA, is definitely not the same and that the Canadian version is better (not good, but better).
In 2012, we were travelling in the USA and needed to stop, we drove past three McDonalds and no other restaurants at all. After 90 minutes, we finally stopped at the fourth McDonalds. There were literally no other choices along the highway. Our kids kept saying "No" to USA McDonalds. After we ate, the kids said, "No more McDonalds for the rest of the trip". Our kids were 16, 14, 12 and 9.
So, sometimes, it is out of desperation.
There are 'better' fast food options than McDonalds. We actually quite like A&W in Canada and in April last year we had our very first Chick-fil-A in the USA. We were pleasantly surprised by the Chick-fil-A. I also like a good burrito.
I always like to say "anything in moderation is good for you". I think that even applies to fast food. On the occasion when we have fast food, it reminds of how lucky we are to have so many healthy food choices available to us.

I despise McDonald's food and nearly all fast food in general. I haven't eaten any in years. My Hubs, who ate Mcdonalds since he was a young child and worked in a McDonald's in the early 1980's, says the quality of the food has gone way downhill: no fresh peeled potatoes for French fries, no real ice cream in the shakes, no real cod fillet in the McFish (now it's some kind of minced pollack), no whole chicken pieces for the McNuggets (again, minced chicken and mostly not breast meat). And the prices have gone way up…..no wonder McDonald's is losing customers. For a couple of dollars more you can buy (or make) much fresher, much healthier, much better tasting food.

I never liked fastfood, also not as a child actually. It was just overly fatty, salty and had no other taste. Mind you, my mom was a super miserable cook, and mostly her cooking was just sustenance and not something overly enjoyable. I do like fake-aways every now and then. Basically I make my own, adding stuff I do enjoy. And it's super tasty. McDonalds and similar though? Ugh!

I agree, Fast food may look nice on the advertising board... but the times I've actually had it I've been very disappointed in the taste and quality of the food... not to mention about 2 years ago I had food poisoning off a Subway sandwich and I've never eaten from there again! That really put me off.
Now for me fast food is last resort stopping during a long drive (which i do like 4/5 times a year really). Otherwise it's all home cooked food for me.

The older I get, the more I am moving away from any kind of junk and then even 'fast' or 'easy' food. I've not been a McDonalds etc fan for ages, but I'd eat it from convenience because my husband was. Then he was diagnosed celiac and I don't miss it at all. These days, I'm even at the point that I'm not a fan of pub food, it's all just fried or boring or unseasoned. It's making going out for casual lunches with the family a bit of a pain to be honest.
But I also understand that I'm a bit of an outlier, and frankly, a massive food snob. For lots of people, McDonalds and its ilk is hyperpalatable and tasty. I guess where I get confused is the people who are like "I'm a super fussy eater, I only eat fast food". For me, that just doesn't compute - how can you be both hyper aware of what you put in your mouth, while your safe food is literally the lowest quality thing you can get your hands on?

Fussy eaters tend to like fast food because it's consistent. Every strawberry you get will be different (some sweeter, more sour, or juicier). Every steak you get will vary in fattiness, seasoning, etc. But, a McDonald's quarter pounder with fries will taste pretty much the same every time.

That makes a huge amount of sense, thank you!

I'll have McD's occasionally and still enjoy a quarterpounder with cheese. Eh, I grew up on the stuff as a kid. In elementary school back in the day, we were allowed on Friday's to walk to the McD's (about 200 yards) and have lunch there with no chaperone. Mind you this was in the mid 70's.

No FF for this guy either. It simply doesn't appeal to me. :)

Yeah , not tempted at all. Travelling with friends on a 15 hour golf road trip 4 years ago, late at night it was going to be McDonalds and I ordered a Big Mack and fries with a coffee. Anyway, took a bite of the burger and spit it back into the bag and finished a few fries and tossed them as well. Enjoyed the coffee which wasn't actually that bad, I remembered it was undrinkable, but this was acceptable, so not a totally useless place for me in a pinch.

Don't like fast food or restaurant * name of choice * ? Cool, don't eat it. You do you.
Bit of a jerk move to belittle other people who may enjoy it, though.
I like McDonald's, my wife doesn't. I don't like Taco Bell, my wife does. We both understand this about the other person, keep it in mind when suggesting meals, but we don't insult the other person's preferences.

To quote Voltaire "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." cheers.

I really don't understand what seems to be the natural human inclination, when it comes to matters of taste preference - or really any individual preference - to think that our own tastes are the good tastes, and other people's tastes are bad tastes. I mean, fast food may taste bad to me, but I don't think people who enjoy it are lesser beings who have "bad taste".
Except for brussels sprouts. People who don't like roasted brussels sprouts are Just Wrong. (Kidding! 😉😆)
Is it that we need to feel superior, that we need to think others who are "the best people" share our tastes so we feel confident or happy about our own choices, or . . . ?
(Whether some/all of fast foods - or any foods - are generally health-promoting is a separate question from taste, though.)

I freely admit to being a total snob when it comes to my own food, but I certainly don't think anyone who likes fast food has bad taste. There are some fast foods I enjoy, my fav Subway sandwich is a thing of beauty (though it's just a meat, cheese and salad sandwich, I don't really consider it "fast food"?), and I miss Arby's roast beef sandwiches with my soul, though it's been 15 years so they may be far better in my memory. When Taco Bell opened here I was so excited (and then disappointed, not only does it taste different, the price is outrageous).
I also love trying food that a lot of people wouldn't go near - street food cooked over scooter motors on the side of the road, deep fried crickets, jiggly things I can't identify in soups served in plastic bags haha. At least McDonalds is identifiable ingredients served in hygienic, regulated conditions. There's a lot more out there to go "WTF, how can you eat that??" than McDonalds… and I'll probably eat most of it 🤣There's some things I draw the line at though.

On the subject of brussels sprouts, for the longest time I was all, "I don't like them….I don't like them". Then, one day when I was at the Whole Foods hot bar getting my "keep me sustained while I finish my walk" snack, they had some and I figured "why not? I'll take a couple and see if I like them". Now, I keep a bag of frozen brussels sprouts in my…er….freezer. :)
The same did not happen with beets tho. Totally icky!
I used to eat a lot of fast food. In fact, I had some kind of fast food lunch for most of the time I was losing weight. It did go from sandwiches and fries to grilled chicken and side salads when I had to lower my points (on weight watchers) and calories (on here).
I don't eat it much anymore unless a client brings us something. Not because I think it's disgusting but because I don't take lunch at work anymore and don't want to spend the money.
I was never much of a McDonalds girl. I just liked the filet o fish, yogurt parfaits, and ice cream. I liked Subway, Burger King (until that last burger when the bun just seemed so dry), El Pollo Loco, Wendy's, and (hypocritically) In n Out. God I love their burgers :)

I've always hated McDonald's french fries. They just taste like old fryer grease to me and they're usually unpleasantly gritty with salt. I can't remember the last time I ate there though. It's probably been well over 10 years since I've had anything more than a sundae or a shake.
A&W is awesome, they'll put a meatless patty in any of their burgers. And they have onion rings as an option instead of fries.
My idea of fast food these days is shawarma, since I've discovered that I can get a Beyond Meat shawarma wrap. I get one maybe every couple of months.
