Did an extreme strength DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do some yoga.
Said Good Bye to the gals at the Y. One gal lost her mother the other day so we all got her a sympathy card and I signed it. Then filled up on gas and had to stop at Brevard Charities thrift store. Started to get ready to be packed, emptied the bathroom, went and laid out in the sun, now we’re going to have dinner then walk across the street for ice cream. Will pack as much as possible tonight in the car
Vince doesn’t know it, but my plan is to get my bathroom down here remodeled next year. Then put in wood floors and take down the popcorn ceiling in the master bedroom and the living room. Then put down flooring in the guest bedroom. Vince has trouble breathing and he’s convinced it’s cat dander. Well, I’m going to use that as the reason we need to get rid of the rug and ceiling.
Carol – sorry to hear about your problems
Linda – hi there
Mayor Lisa – I’d sure vote for you. Smart mayor you have now to see the potential in having you as a mayor
went for ice cream then put things in the car, Will probably put my laptop in the car.

Re - Glad you found a contractor. Hope it all comes together fast.
Carol - I hope your pain eases quickly.
Lisa - “Making the best choice is sometimes making the best of not-very-good choices.” So true.
Mayor Lisa - I love it! Are mayors elected there?Lanette - I’ve never done DNA testing. I do know about the ancestry on my Mom’s side and my Dad’s paternal side but not his Maternal side.
Maybe we are related somehow back through the lines.Rebecca - How lovely for your sister to have that chair move and the kisses.
Im watching 100 Years of the Grand Old Opry.
They are having a gospel portion and they sang one of the songs from Dads funeral and it got me hard! I haven’t had it hit me like that for a while now.
I’m trying to decide if I should go to bed and watch the rest of this on the weekend or finish it tonight. It’s really good.I had my car towed tonight to a mechanic. I’m really counting on my brother’s diagnosis from across the country based on only my description of the problem.
⁃ It feels like the gas pedal is fighting me
⁃ It won’t start in the cold unless I pump the peddle like the old days
⁃ It feels like it’s going to stall if I let off the gas sometimes
⁃ It won’t start if it’s too hot outside or if I’ve had it running
Anyway, you get the drift, based on all of my problems and what warning lights were flashing at me he suggested what it was and rather than pay for a diagnosis I just asked the mechanic to replace the part.
Rodger agreed that he thought the problem was the same as Harley so I have put all of my trust in them.Well I’m going to watch a bit more of my show

Lovely day again. I've done my editing and my Duolingo. I've definitely improved my very rusty Spanish since last year, although I had a good basis from years ago. I am frustrated that they don't consider me a higher level, but, by the time we go to the Canary Islands in October, I should have climbed a level. I want to be in B2. And yes, I know I don't need it on a cruise,☺️ but speaking the language of a country is one of my greatest pleasures in life! I always chat to the guides on the coach trips and sometimes random strangers!
School pick up today. And staying on to babysit for Max's Parents Evening. I have decided to buy a ready meal in Waitrose on the way, to heat up at my son's rather than order a delivery of fish and chips. Cheaper, and we are probably going out to The Regency fish restaurant next week, before French Circle, so I thought I'd get something different. Probably some slow cooked joint, or a pie. Plus tenderstem broccoli.
I wish you all peace.

Allie – please take care of yourself. Rest and recover. Limit your contact with people to keep yourself safe.
Carol – have you had an eye operation?
I hope your son continues to recover.
Lisa – I’m glad you got away for a weekend to explore something related to your crafts.
Carla – I’m glad you got away for a weekend to explore something related to your crafts.
Barbie – hugs
Barbara – hugs
Rosemarie – I’m glad that you’re getting out there, and I’m glad the Audubon Society experience was good.
Re – you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you!
I have made an executive level decision - and that is that rather than stepping down my caloric intake every time I lose another 5 lbs, I am going to just go to the TDEE amount for the 150 pound goal weight. I will learn to eat as I mean to go on. Hopefully it will be more sustainable if I get into the habit of eating for the lower pounds, now….We'll see how hard it is… LOL.
Good plan! I’ve always thought it was a good idea to eat as though a person were at the goal weight.
Lanette – we read about Gene & Barbara Hackman, and that is definitely one thing I worry about with my husband. If something were to happen to me … what would happen to him?
About the Gene & Barbara Hackman Deaths - I watched a thought-provoking video concerning the death of the Hackman's and why they went so long without being discovered. The presenter made some valid points - we can't always assume a caregiver is in good shape! Barbara Hackman died of Hantavirus and Gene was left alone for many days. For couples where one of them is the caregiver and even older folks who live alone like me, it's important to have someone checking in with us often.
Mo – I don’t know how you have the energy!!
Tracey – Bad gas?
Lasagne – all this talk about lasagne, and I had to order a frozen one for dinner! One day I might make one from scratch.
Contractors – For the work we’ve had done, I locate a number of places online (websites). I email the top 3 or so. The first one back to me gets points for communication. I do not use the phone until later in the process. If the places aren’t modern enough to use email, they lose points.
I’m much more of a maximiser.

Thoughts on Walking
I've been walking more this year, and over the past few weeks, I've been tracking my steps and walking around the house to get the number up a bit more.
A) I find walking around the house to be awkward. I can't get into a stride and there's more twisting and turning than there is outside as I dodge furniture inside. Various parts of my legs and hips twinge when I walk inside. The only good thing is that I can do it barefoot.
For those of you having issues, I wonder if the awkwardness of walking inside is contributing.
B) In tracking my steps, I've discovered that I normally walk somewhere between 7000 and 8000 steps a day, and over 10,000 on days where I get out for a decent walk.
That's down a bit from when I tracked my steps many years ago. Then, I was hitting 10,000 steps without any extra effort.
That said, now that the step-counting challenge is over, I'd like to focus more on cycling.

Tracey My check engine came on and off from at least a year when it was finally diagnosed correctly it was the pcv valve. In older cars it was easy to maintain. In my newer car because it is so difficult to get to it was a pricey fix. When the PCV valve is bad it is like the car is choking because it does not get the air it needs to run properly. I also have a turbo charged car and I learned I really should be using premium in the car. Quite the sticker shock when I have to fill up now!
I am reading the Power of the Gut by David Perlmutter. He reinforces many of the other things I have read in how the state of health of our gut determines if we are healthy or not. He is a strong advocate of feeding your gut with fiber and no ultra processed foods (junk foods). Unfortunately artificially sweetened foods are not healthy for your gut. (No free lunch) It has been over twenty years since I have eaten anything artificially sweetened. I quit because of how they affected my mood. Plus I never liked the aftertaste. This was a reason I gave up fried foods as in doughnuts because the after taste when so bad!
Mantra… Protect my Liver…Feed my gut…take care of my mitochrondria.

Morning, my chickens…
The fence bid came in at over $30 a foot ($100 a meter), well over double what it cost to build the fence in the first place, and this bid was using our materials! At 170 feet of fenceline that we're looking at, it is just not reasonable in any way.
So, we've decided to go a completely different direction, and begin with a living fence. His company buys English privet wholesale, and we have a half dozen that we rescued from their throwaway pile a few years ago that are now 6 feet tall and look wonderful with not much care and feeding. We can get a few dozen from them at a good price and get them in the ground.
This timing is important to me, because I need to get my physical health in good enough shape to help with everything that needs doing. Corey can't do this alone. I'm getting there - the meds are definitely helping, exercising every day is helping, but I need to get stronger now, as well as move better.
I will say, the slightly warmer weather is already helping my joint pain, so am really happy to know that today is the vernal equinox, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere - which means our Machka is moving into fall in her corner of the world.
The lilies of the valley are just opening here. The frozen mornings this week past burned the crowns of the first leaves as they rose, and marked the fragile petals of the bravest bells that opened first.
But, the final ice-tipped winds of winter the last two days have finally subsided this morning. Hope that spring or fall is good to you, to all of us. It's been a long winter here. So glad spring has begun. It always does.
Love y'all,

Got paperwork done for change in doctor, now to bring it to them and set up the first appointment. DH does not want to do anything concerning doctors. sigh, oh, well, I’ll be the first to go and check out the new doctors then set up his appointment. I dread getting the records from our old doctors. We just had bloodwork done there. I hope the new docs use that and have us go again for bloodwork. DH will not be happy about that.
Texted DS yesterday and he was in a mood.Tells me he is not sober and is very angry at the world. He told me he was working, then told me he was at the doctors, but when I checked his phone location, he wasn’t even in the state he was supposed to be in. I need to stop worrying but can’t. I am afraid of getting a phone call from the police.
The major wind here has stopped for now. Thank goodness! That will ease up the allergies a bit.

Good morning, young, healthy ladies!
I hope all is well with you this morning. I am perplexed by my right hip and the two falls I have had over the last two weeks. I read M's post on fall prevention, and now I wonder if my hip hurts due to a pulled muscle or arthritis. I fell this week while playing with the dog in the morning when I got off work. We were on my exercise mat. I was able to get up with ease. Afterward, I took a muscle relaxer and put a heating pad on my hip. So, no exercise this week. I will try today. What I took away from the article is that exercising is key. Then I read what Margaret posted, and what she said explains why I get sick to the stomach when I eat fried foods, especially donuts and fried chicken. Insightful post; keep them coming. Pip, you go, girl. I am so proud of you!
I realized I was out of Flonase, so I refilled it from Walgreens and used my Benny card. Then I decided that they could deliver my Finofibrate and Effexor, too. Well, my card declined those two meds. I called the card company, and they said those two medications were rung up incorrectly. So, instead of calling, I will pick them up. It looks pretty ominous outside. I think it may rain. I forgot to tell you that my daughter Julia came by. ( DH set it up), so she can pick up the bedroom set. I met her boyfriend, and he is expected. He is like a teddy bear. I am hoping that they are suitable for each other. She stayed out of trouble for two years, and she stopped drinking, so I will give her a chance with limits.Lisa, I forgot to tell you that this forum also helps me mentally. I love that I can vent to you all, and no one shames me for how I feel. I needed you all. I try not to get too attached to the kiddos, but it is hard not to. Some of these kids without parents need all of my love, and my students, whom I teach, do, too.
Tracey, I understand the frustration with your car situation. I hated when I finally had to say, let's get a new car. ( I do not buy new anymore.) Anyway, your car is breaking down on top of dealing with your furnace and fridge. Hopefully, everything else will stay fixed for a while. Are you driving Roger's care for now?
Allie, keep that area clean and apply Neosporin or Bactiban until it heals. I hope your labs are good. I also hope your UTI goes away soon. My mom gets them all the time, and she becomes lethargic and even more disoriented.
Lanette, your granddaughter, is beautiful and athletic.
Carol, let us know how your eye surgery goes.
Sue, you take care too.
Machka, my job wears me out.
Talk to you all later. I have laundry to do.

Session 22:
Recipe Modification
Overview
Throughout this month, you will learn strategies for
making recipe changes to make them lower in calories,
lower in salt and/or higher in nutrition. In the end, you
will be able to take your favorite recipes and make
small changes to them so they are healthier.
3 Steps to a Healthier Recipe
1. Replace/Reduce an existing ingredient
➢ Replace up to ½ of the white flour with whole-
wheat flour
➢ Replace white pasta with whole grain pasta
➢ Replace white rice with brown or wild rice
➢ Replace whole milk with low-fat milk
➢ Replace vegetable oil with canola oil for baking
➢ Replace butter for sautéing with olive oil
2. Add a new ingredient
➢ Add a vegetable to a dish
➢ Add sautéed vegetables to a
sauce
➢ Top stews, chili, or soups with
a serving of low-fat shredded
cheese
1➢ Include chopped nuts & dried fruit in muffin mixes
3. Change the Cooking Method
➢ Healthy cooking methods include baking, broiling,
grilling, poaching, sautéing, and steaming
➢ Limit deep-frying cooking methods
Sugar Fat Salt
Replace sugar
with a natural
sweetener (read
packaging for
conversion rate)
Substitute
unsweetened
applesauce in
place of butter
Reduce salt by ½
in most recipes
(except baked
goods with yeast)
Use fruit to
sweeten a recipe
instead of sugar
(pureed banana,
apples, pumpkin)
Replace sour
cream with Greek
yogurt
Experiment with
herbs & spices in
place of salt
How to Reduce Sugar, Fat & Salt in Recipes
NOTE: Only try one ingredient change at a time. This
way you will know if the change worked well in the
dish.
Why Change the Fat?
From Session 7 on Carbs, Protein and Fat, you have
learned that including foods that contain healthy fats is
2good for your meal plan. There are two types of fats
that are not as healthy. Saturated fats and trans fats
have been linked with increasing your risk of heart
disease and certain cancers. Cut down or avoid these
fats when possible.
Fats to Limit or Swap Out
➢ Saturated Fats
This type of fat is naturally found mostly in tropical
oils, meats and dairy
❖ See Handout: Saturated Fats
✓ Skill Building Activity: Read Your Nutrition Labels for
Saturated Fat (your coach will lead you through this
activity)
➢ Trans Fats
This fat is a man-made saturated fat. It is used to
keep processed products like crackers fresher
longer. In 2015, the United States Food and Drug
3Administration required trans fats be removed from
foods due to health concerns.
❖ See Handout: Trans Fats
✓ Skill Building Activity: Read Your
Labels for Trans Fats (your coach
will lead you through this
activity)
Macaroni & Cheese-Label
Reading
Check the label for saturated fat
Check the label for trans fat
By preparing your own macaroni & cheese you can:
➢ Reduce the amount of saturated fat using low-fat
milk & cheese
➢ Make the meal without trans fats
➢ Add some vegetables like mild onions or peas
For more ideas of making a recipe healthier take a look
at this basic chicken recipe. You will see ways to swap
food items, reduce food items, and add foods to make
it more nutritious.

6Saturated Fats
Why are these fats considered “unhealthy”?
You want to try and limit these fats because they
can increase your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels
and increase your risk for heart disease.
What foods contain saturated fat?
Saturated fats are mainly found in foods that come
from animals, but they can also be found in most
fried foods and some pre-packaged foods.
Sources of Saturated Fat
● High-fat cheeses
● High-fat cuts of meat
● Lard
● Whole-fat milk and cream
● Butter
● Ice cream
✔Try to replace these foods high in saturated fat with foods
high in monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat and
omega-3 fatty acids.Trans Fats
What are trans fats?
The FDA considers the terms “trans fat” and “trans fatty
acids” as interchangeable.
The fats are created when hydrogen is added to vegetable
oil to make it more solid. This is why trans fats are often called
partially hydrogenated oils.
Why are these fats considered “unhealthy”?
There are no known health benefits to trans fats. Trans fats
raise your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels and decrease your
HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels.
These fats increase your risk of having a stroke or
developing heart disease, which is the leading cause
of death in the United States.
The FDA removed trans fats from the GRAS (Generally
Recommended to be Safe) list.
How to reduce your intake of trans fats?
Decrease your consumption of commercially fried foods and
baked foods such as cookies, crackers, pies and refrigerated
dough products.
Look for “0g trans fat” on the Nutrition Facts Label. Try to
avoid products with partially hydrogenated oils, shortening
and hydrogenated oils in the ingredient list.
Be sure to check the ingredient list on your peanut butter,
coffee creamer, chips, and boxed cake & pancake mixes as
well as your microwave popcorn.
Use naturally occurring oils like canola, flax seed, sunflower or
olive oil when cooking. Try to avoid using stick margarine.Basic Baked Chicken
INGREDIENTS:
● ¼ cup vegetable oil or butter
● 3-4 pounds of chicken pieces (about 8)
● Salt & pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. Arrange chicken pieces with skin in a large baking dish so
that the pieces are not touching.
3. Spread melted butter or vegetable oil on top of chicken with
a basting brush. Sprinkle with salt & pepper to taste.
4. Bake in preheated oven at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Turn
temperature down to 350 degrees for 10-30 minutes. Poke
with a sharp knife about every 10 minutes until juice are not
pink.
5. Remove from oven, tent with foil for about 10 minutes or until
ready to serve.
How could you change this recipe to make it healthier?
Swaps:
✔ Use only chicken breast pieces

Salt and seasoning blends increase sodium intake. You can cut back
on sodium, while maintaining flavor and zest by adding herbs, no-salt
seasonings, garlic, apple cider vinegar, or lemon juice to salads,
meats, and side dishes. Be creative! You are sure to find new and
exciting flavors that keep your heart healthy.

Additional Tips:
● Keep dried herbs/spices in a place in your kitchen away from
heat and moisture. Crush them before adding to food.
● Add ground spices/herbs to foods 15 minutes before the end
of cooking time (1hr before the end for whole spices/herbs).
● When subbing fresh herbs for dried herbs, double the portion.Spice it up! (Part 2)
Here are more spice and food combos to help you reduce
your sodium intake while maintaining flavor and zest at meals:

Hugs to you Rita. Soooo hard.
OK my friends, here is a quiz for you. Here are my friends and me about 16 months ago.
Here are two pictures of the guests at my wedding in 1970. All three of my friends are in one or the other. Can you spot them? My brother is there too.
No prize I'm afraid. G swears she wasn't there and P has trouble remembering. B remembers it well.

Heather - I think your "bruv" is the face with very stylish glasses between you and the groom in the large group photo. The face structure is much like his, if it's not him.
Your friends, honestly, I can't pick out. You are much more recognizable, to me, in the second photo, in profile. Unchanged through the years.
Beautiful photos, lots of fun to see them - thank you!

Mo - Sorry to hear about your hip and falling. I agree, sometimes the best way to deal with getting these meds is to actually show up in person and get things taken care of while you have someone's attention.
By the way, that adorable athletic granddaughter belongs to Carol but I'd be glad to claim her! Seems like her leg was in a cast only a few months ago. Great job, young lady.
Lisa - living fence is a great idea, especially since Corey has the connections. 😉
Physical Therapy Today - I went to Physical Therapy this morning for my lower back. Therapist said it appears to be a pinched nerve/disc problem and he doesn't think surgery helps that much, but if I build up my core that should help a lot. So I have 2 pages of exercises to do, many are similar to what I did years ago when I went to PT but with some modifications now that I'm older and my discs are more compressed and not a supple. Also they'll put me on the treadmill next time at 10% incline.
He said to lay off carrying weights for a while but go ahead and keep walking. Recommended I get back to wearing Hoka's. He also goes to Dr. D for HIS foot problems. 😉 He also recommended I get a Temper-pedic mattress. $$ But I can try putting a firm board like plywood under the mattress in the meantime until my ship comes in! Hope it didn't sink! I need to go through DH's wood stash and see what he has stored away.
Ginny - the therapist also said I'd probably benefit from dry needling. Didn't you have that done a while ago and did it help? He said my insurance won't cover it so it will be $50 extra but will probably only take 1 or 2 sessions. So I am interested. Here's some info on the technique.
One good thing - he told another therapist he was passing me off to next time that I was pretty fit. I think I impressed him with the sit to stands I was able to do in 30 seconds even though the last couple were painful and the chair was only 17" high - much lower than I'm accustomed to. And also once I get warmed up, I can bend over and nearly touch my toes without pain and can squat and lift most things with my legs and not use my back. It's the bending to lift where I can't use my legs and lifting something like 15# Rosie that hurts it.
Anyway, it reminded me that even with injury that is somewhat limiting, whatever I can do is helpful and keep it up. I was lamenting I can't do what I could 5 years ago but I'm able to do quite a bit it turns out. Whew.

Heather - I admire you for learning a second language. I learned French in school, and have found as an adult I can get the meaning of written French usually, but not so much spoken.
Machka - It was the Throttle Body. It was stuck 1/8” open and they are only supposed to be open for seconds at a time.
I got it fixed today and it is much better but still not quite right. I don’t know. I wish my brother was closer to me.Lisa - that would be an expensive fence. I think the planting will look wonderful.
Rita - hugs
Mo - I wasn’t driving DH’s truck to work only because we have limited parking at work and my car died at work so I didn’t want to take up another parking space until I got it towed.
I hope your falling incidents are just a fluke.
My cousin had a couple of falling incidents and it was the precursor to a rabbit hole of issues, turns out she developed fibromyalgia. I remember her being angry at her husband because he wouldn’t believe there was anything wrong with her.I’m tired so heading to bed in a minute.
I wanted to share this story with you.
Michaela is coming for a sleepover so I can take her to ceramics on Saturday. Lauryn offered to bring her tomorrow evening and I invited her to visit for a bit if she wanted so she could watch the 100 years of Grand Old Opry with me. She said that she might, but was thinking of a movie date with Jonah.
I told her that Michaela was planning on a two night sleepover I thought.
She responded with “Oh is she? Lmao I love how she plans stuff and never bothers to tell her ride/atm 🤣 😂”Have a good night

Lisa - Good try! The guy you picked out was my ex's uni mate. I'm still in touch with him and his wife. My brother is behind my ex's arm in the second photo, with a Beatle haircut. He was only just eighteen. My friend G is in the far right of the first photo - long blonde hair, hat, and staring off into the distance. P is beside her with smooth hair drawn back. B is in the second photo on the far right - long dark hair and a hat.
Looking at those photos I saw people I haven't thought about for years. Several who died too soon, including my ex's sister in the first photo, about four along from him to the left, gazing to the front. She died at 29 in a terrible car accident. It's a good thing we don't know what the future holds.
Yesterday went well. Edie and I discussed puerperal fever, infant death rates in the old days, hip replacement, and the arbitrary nature of life. She loves 'what if' ideas. All this was on the way home from school. Apparently she has been getting into trouble for being too 'lively'. Yesterday was a 'nightmare'!! 😝
Our makeshift dinner of ready Boeuf Bourguinon, purple sprouting broccoli, and a few pasta whirls, was perfectly edible. The parents went with Max to his school to finally sort out his GCSE choices. These are important exams. Unfortunately, he has had to drop languages, even Spanish, which he speaks quite well. You can't do everything.
I was waiting for my bus earlier, and I went to get something from the pharmacy. On the corner there is a street stall which has been there 38 years! He had huge packets of fresh mint, so I immediately thought of the goat's cheese tart I tasted at French Circle. When I tried to buy it, I put my bus pass onto his card machine! 🤯 Oh dear! So I bought the rest of the ingredients at Waitrose, and we will have the tart tonight. I will make a half size one, with a wholemeal tortilla base instead of puff pastry.
Came home and watched part of a series about Norway and Denmark. Made me very nostalgic.

Tracey - Duolingo is free, if you can cope with the adverts. 5 minutes a day would bring a lot of your French back. It's on my bucket list to go to the French speaking part of Canada, but I don't think John shares my enthusiasm! We often think we have to do something with a big commitment, but 5 minutes a day can be a great help. Clutterbug had a video on just that this week. Also, being happy with doing it badly. I've shed most of my perfectionism… makes life much more interesting. You only learn by making lots of mistakes and you might end up taking a trip to France! I'll hop over to meet you! 🤩
