Life after thyroidectomy

Hi all, I had a total thyroidectomy five days ago because of suspected thyroid cancer. I'm taking a very low dose of levothyroxine (only 75mcg for 172m/63kg) that will be adjusted in mid-June and am not sure how to make it through the next six weeks. I heard that weight gain is common so worry about that as well as fatigue. Has anyone been through this? I had hypothyroidism and Hashimoto disease before. Any and all help would be appreciated.

There is a really good thread here about hypothyroidism and weight management. It was written by a former MFP-er who is a scientist in the hypothyrodism field, himself hypothyroid, who lost weight by calorie counting. (I think he may've even had a thyroidectomy, but don't recall for sure.) It is solid, science based information, unlike a lot of the marketing-oriented clickbait out in the blogosphere.

Yes, it can have an effect on weight loss. But the effect is probably less than many people might imagine. When the right medication dosage is dialed in, weight management for people with thyroid deficiencies is not noticeably different than it is for anyone with normal thyroid function. (I'm an example of the that last, in that I'm severely hypothyroid - though not from thyroidectomy - but properly medicated. I lost weight fine, have maintained a healthy weight for 9+ years since. I'm far from the only one here who'd say something similar.)
You are already starting post-surgery medication. Weight gain post-surgically is possible, but IMU the effect for most people isn't necessarily huge, probably within a realm where dietary changes can limit it if working to do that. I know that that is non-ideal and potentially difficult, but the situation should improve as your medication dosage approaches the level that's right for you.
I'm sorry that you're going through this; I hope the long-term outcome will be excellent, and that even the short-term effects may not be as severe as you're fearing!
