Ginny - my Ortho doc has an open MRI, no tube. Still some banging as I recall but at least I could look around. The last time I was in a "tube" they gave me headphones with good music. Here's my ortho's MRI:
Barbie - isn't a battery powered leaf blower a wonderful thing? I let the hens out today and didn't keep an eye on them- they went way back toward the powerline and didn't feel like coming back. I nearly grabbed the leaf blower, lol. Luckily I enticed them back with some treats.
Barbara - looking at my last DEXA scan, I'm still on the downhill slide, so far not by much thank goodness. I'll check out the links you provided, thank you!
I did a little research about regular walking carrying light weights (or wearing a weighted vest, etc. or even walking on its own like Debbie and Barbie do) and it appears it's beneficial to bone health if done on a regular basis, like building a callus - and might be as effective for bones as doing strength training 2 or 3 times a week. Per Copilot: The "bone callus" (not really a callus, just gradual building) doesn’t just grow from trauma—it responds to repeated demand. Heavy loading can accelerate adaptation, but light, regular, well-aligned movement (like walking) is often safer, especially for folks with low back arthritis or disk problems. The reason I bring this up is that the message used "walking, by itself, isn't enough." Maybe not walking from the couch to the fridge, but it looks like walking on a regular basis for a period of time has merit.
Kim - what would become of your mom if you weren't the responsible one? Would your brother step up to the plate? Don't you have a sister? Sounds like your mom is put out that you aren't physically able to come and help her. You deserve hours of hugs from her. I'd like to see one of Pip's boots applied to your brother's posterior. Maybe repeatedly if you think it would help. 😁
I hope you can come up with some good healthy menu ideas that are budget friendly. I agree, it's a challenge these days.
Ginny - how exciting getting prepared for your new place. Furniture and decorations that suit YOU. You deserve it, my friend.
Margaret - I agree, it only takes one bad experience with the medical testing and equipment to make a person want to steer clear of all of it. They are finding a lot of different ways of treating cancer these days, and I was just listening to a podcast by Dr. Li this morning about Akkermansia - a gut microbe that has been proven to build the immune system and help fight cancer. I just found a 20 page information sheet by Dr. Li about healthful plants:

Heather - Love it! There's something about the swirling lines on the pavement leading to the spokes of the giant wheel reaching for the sky and either cradling or skewering that swirling cloud. The choice of which one you see is in the perspective of the beholder... Nice asymmetrical framing, drawing your eye inescapably to the center of that wheel.

Barbie thank you BUNCHES for the lightweight stainless steel hose suggestion. Having a new “toy” turned the wind-driven watering chore into a joy, especially the multifunction nozzle with cutoff switch. Whod’ve thunk it? “…so soothing to be in charge of …” Amen, sister, AMEN!
Lanette Here is the link to the official OHSU BB&B program.
Coach Ken started with that but enhanced it as he learned more and more. Listening to the (garbled, staticky) voice memo recordings made me realize that trying to do the entire 60 minutes would be so overwhelming as to not happen. Soooo… I’m starting by committing to 8-12 minutes, every morning before I weigh in. First stab at details in spoiler
Do each activity for 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds, do another set.
Alternate planes every day so: Monday: forward/back “sagittal”. Tuesday: side to side “lateral”. Wednesday, 90 degree “rotational”. Thursday start over. Sunday rest day.
First week:
Step up/knee lifts. Step right foot up onto something 3-7” higher than the floor. Lift left knee up to waist height, hold two, three, four, step left foot back to floor, step right foot back to floor. Repeat starting with left foot/right knee. Move smoothly with control, avoid using momentum to get up.
Shoulder mobility:
Sagittal: holding dowel with both hands behind you, slowly push it back and lift up. . Second set, lift dowel up, move behind head and pull down as far as possible.
Move slowly, smoothly with control, aiming to gently increase range of motion
Lateral: holding dowel on top of head, lean to the left then right, letting knees bend, get the motion from hips.
Rotational: with dowel on shoulders behind neck twist to the right and lean back, letting left foot rotate on toes. Then twist to the left, lean back, let right foot rotate. Every time you lean back a bit further, you’ll be able to twist further next time.
Start over with another set of step up/knee lifts and shoulder mobility.
Two rounds = 8 minutes, three rounds = 12 minutes,
You’re right, the message used to be that walking isn’t enough. Glad to hear there’s research proving otherwise. Likewise I feel like the “50% chance of dying within a year of a broken hip” and “within 6 months of a long bone fracture” could be talking points provided to GP by Big Pharma.
Annie “… will Annie be coming along…” ((hugs held extra long))
Ginny your major purchases sound exciting. Look forward to pics of your new digs. Thank you very much for sharing your oral surgeon’s feedback.
Terri thankful it cooled of enough to sleep.
Lisa belated happy birthday to Corey! Definitely not surrender, just strategic plan of attack . . . ;}
Margaret I remember those high humidity/high heat days when visiting my Aunt Margaret in St. Louis, every other August. With the only a/c being a kitchen window fan, it was truly miserable. ((gentle lightweight quick hugs))
Carla ((hugs)). Neither would I want to think about knee replacement surgery. [shudder]
Okie hope your knee replacements were successful. Did you do PT exercises in preparation?
Carol sorry to confuse. I’m trying not to take medicine for bones because that medicine can make the bones in your jaw die back. Since it is VERY likely I’ll have to have some pulled in the next year, I don’t want to risk the bone medicine. So, to keep bones strong without medicine, I need to do weight bearing exercise and keep taking supplements. Thanks for the good wishes!
Kim, yep, you described my MRI experience perfectly.
Debbie, yours to Kim. ((hugs)) Funny you should mention driving across bridges, Mama was terrified of them and even STOPPED in the middle of the Richmond-San Rafael bridge shortly after it opened. I was less than 9 yrs old and remember trying to soothe her and encourage her to drive on. I finally said “Mama, you have to take me home right NOW”. Must confess that I get a little oogley going across some… ;}
Allie sorry you’re feeling yucky ((hugs))
Rebecca wow that ranch dressing, is sure high sodium!
Rita, “Lady Baa Baa” rotflmao
Heather I can’t think of you living anywhere else either! ;) There aren’t enough drugs in the world to get me to ride that Giant Wheel.
Whoops, it’s twenty past Tummy Time…

I understand, Margaret. Everyone has to do what's right for them. I did not mind the chemo or radiation and would happily do them again, if it were necessary. My body is also handling the medication I'm taking fairly well. I know not every one does. I guess my body is mutilated, because I had one breast removed and the other reduced, but I'm not sorry for that either. I don't have my gall bladder either, and that's just fine. My semi monthly scans are also no big deal. The technicians are capable and sweet, with lots of hugs and words of encouragement.
Just wanted to give a different perspective. I've also changed my diet and am more intentional about moving, and take the oncologist recommended vitamins and minerals, but I'm not relying on that exclusively.

well they are done. I haven’t done bullwinkle because she’s a girl and I want to find pink rhinestones. I made a post on a Nextdoor forum to see if there was anyone close by that had decent handwriting. I met her and she did awesome! She wrote yogi’s and did Floyd’s name. It was done freehand. I will connect with her to do bullwinkle. His bottom pad was a little crooked so that’s why the rhinestones look like I messed up.

😀 Barbara, glad the new hose is working for you. I just came in from watering and found it easy.
😀 Pip, great memorials to your beloved dogs.
😀 Ginny, so great that you can get into your new place.
😀 When I was a child I wanted to enjoy the amusement park rides like everyone but nearly all of them terrified me except perhaps the carousel.

Lisa - John said, "That's exactly what I thought myself." 🤣😅☺️
Cleaner today. Should be a bit cooler. I might find it within me to walk up to the Asian shop. I need pancakes for crispy duck, and Dim Sum, now that I've eaten all that remained.
Need to wash my hair and make an appointment for a trim next week.
I'm still on easy dinners, so porcini ravioli is the order of the day, with tenderstem broccoli. I will overload on the olive oil, garlic, and sage. The sage in the front garden is threatening to take over the world. I had an Amazon delivery of a big package of Za,atar yesterday, which I decant into small jam jars. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend you do. Fabulous on almost anything. It's thyme based, with sesame and various herbs. I will be putting some into my olive oil medley. My life would be the poorer without it.
We've been eating a lot of cherries this year, off our tree. John has to stay ahead of the birds, but we have gleaned a good haul. We shared some with the girls last week.
Hoping to hear from G how her trip went.

Pip: 🥰the plaques.
Had a restful Sunday. Put away laundry, and deep cleaned DH’s bedroom now that we have the new vacuum. So much easier to use for the fiddly corners. 😂Our usual fortnightly online chat is now on Messenger since Skype is no longer available. Granddaughter updated us on her trip to Milan for a Haematologists Conference. She took an extra 4 days on Lake Como, and had a great time. This morning DH had a car service booked so we went to The Range for some craft/gardening retail therapy. I will also hem some new trousers tha DH bought a couple of weeks ago.
Just 2 more groups before summer recess. Psychology Wed am, card making on Friday pm. And our Monthly Meeting Thursday pm. That’ll be me until 1st September.

MRI
My first MRI was to scan my knees in Winnipeg in about 2003. The first MRI machine came to Winnipeg in 1990, so they were still quite new. They told me to remove everything metal and to put on a gown. I laid down on the bed. They gave me a pillow similar to the one in the picture and a blanket, and they put some foam blocks around my legs to help hold them still … similar to the blue foam block under the lady's head. I was told to lie still and the bed went in about as far as in the image. It did go in and out a little bit and was a bit noisy, but my head never went in the machine.
I was fascinated with MRIs because they were a step closer to the Tricorder which Bones uses in Star Trek so I was excited to get that MRI done and it didn't disappoint. 🙂😃
I would have had both an MRI and CT scan in Alberta in 2007 after a bicycle crash, but I don't remember them. I must have fallen asleep the minute I got into the MRI!
The MRIs I've had in Australia have been even more comfortable.
First, they send a questionnaire making sure there are no metal implants or anything. And they go over that questionnaire a couple times along the way.
Then I change into a gown, often leaving sweatpants or shorts and socks on if I'm having something in my upper body scanned.
I'm asked what kind of music I like (usually I go with Easy Listening), then I am given earplugs which I put in, and I'm fitted with headphones.
I lie down on the bed with one or two comfy pillows and get all tucked in with blankets and something under my knees for back comfort. No velcro. No straps. Nothing holding me down. The technician hands me a call button and tells me that if I have any concerns at all, I'm to press the call button.
Once I'm relaxed and comfortable, and the technicians are happy, my music comes on and the table goes into the machine.
Above me, there's an image of a sunny day at the beach. If I tip my head back slightly and roll my eyes, I can just see out the one end of the MRI machine. And if I lift my head slightly and look down toward my toes, I can see out the other end of the MRI machine. They aren't that deep. And the hole I go into isn't very small. A bit of wiggling and sliding, and I could be out of there in about 10 seconds.
But I settle in, start listening to the music, look at the image, imagine cycling on a road by the beach … and promptly fall asleep. 30 minutes later I wake up because the bed is sliding out of the machine.
My favourite MRI was a 45 minute one of my brain because I got a decent nap. (They found a large cyst on the left temporal lobe.)
Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I have gone through medical tests that were a whole lot worse! I still have nightmares about the one where they rammed a tube through my nose (with my deviated septum blocking the thing, but they didn't know that at the time) and into my stomach. They had so much trouble getting the tube in (with good reason) that they literally just pushed till it finally scraped and cut it's way in and all the way down. That HURT!
I'll take an MRI any day of the week over that!

Bridges - I'm not keen on crossing bridges either. In fact, that's one of the reasons why I drive to a certain point on my way to work, and then take the bus from there!
The Tasman Bridge is 1.4 km (0.87 miles) long and the lanes are narrow.
And the Tasman Bridge collapsed on 5 January 1975 after a ship hit the bridge and sank. It was fixed and reopened in October 1977.
I do drive across it from time to time … like twice today when I took my husband to physio … but I'm never comfortable.

It is currently 91°F outside and we are sitting at a car show. Umbrella overhead, rechargeable fan blowing, and light breeze. I had a list of things to get done this morning. DH added to that list- go figure....we got sticks picked up and burned in the firepit. Blew off both porches. Watered hanging baskets. Refreshed hummingbird feeders. Let cats play outside (they didn't care that it was hot). Checkbook caught up, bills paid, papers put in excel and filed, sorted work certificates. Cleaned up hearing aids for DH. So busy morning!
Have to walk tonight. Need real food first. Only pork at car show. So today has been a not good eating day.
Well, happy Monday! Brought the Shelby GT home from the car show then took my Miata out to dinner. She just makes me smile. My favorite Mexican restaurant and I have lunch today. I did get 15k steps in yesterday inside for the most part. I am posting this then reading to catch up.

Yes … of course walking on a regular basis for a period of time has merit. I haven't walked thousands of km for nothing! I aim to walk at least 50 km/month and have done for the past 20 years or more … prior to about 20 years ago, I walked, but didn't track and log it. I've been walking regularly since I was … what … about 18 months old? 😛
My parents walked places, so I walked. For slightly longer trips, we often cycled.
From Grade 8 to 12, my brother and I walked 3.2 km (2 miles) a day to and from school … over 600 km a year. And somewhere in there, I started running after school as well!
I've frequently had jobs where I could walk to work and attended universities and colleges where I could walk from home or walk between work and school.
Even now, at the end of each month, you'll see I frequently walk at least 50 km.
Some of that has been just me … some has been with heavy backpacks.

Good morning my friends!
I don't like driving over big bridges either.
Debbie and Kim, my older brother was mean to me, and I finally decided he was just born broken that way. I tried to behave so that I could be proud of myself independent of him. He died maybe six or eight years ago. It took counseling to get to that point, but changing the question from "why me" to "what's the matter with him" helped a lot.
Pip your paw prints are beautiful.
Lisa there are seasons for indoor and outdoor work. Seems like the summer season for indoor work started early this year. Sounds like you got a lot of indoor work done. Yay!
Margaret it's hot here too. I have to watch that Dad closes the doors all the way.
Rebecca We did get Mom's picture back from the lost and found at church. Yay!
Heather I love the lines of that picture!
Allie hope you feel better.
I signed up for a week of something with Jason Seib about the mental side of self care, exercise and diet. It turns out to be a Facebook group with fifteen thousand people. So much for individual attention! I started reading comments. I laughed at the people who forgot what they signed up for! Lol. I have been listening to his podcast so I know what content to expect. I pick up on the enthusiasm so it's all good to me.
May you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!

Morning, kidlins…
Heather - I think Johnny and I would get along tremendously well. I love a man with a sense of humor AND a sense of perspective. I knew the "uncut" was a visual pun, but he still made it beautiful. How can you not love that? 😊
Annie - You're absolutely right… "to everything there is a season…"
Usual Monday morning soundscape sloshing and burbling. Got the whites in bleaching, so I can get all the towels on the line. The humidity is 94% now, but it will drop the moment the sun is above the tree line.
Corey got out on the tractor yesterday and carted loads and loads of trash around and into the final dumpster. The cleanup crew did get all the heavy, large things, but didn't push the brush back, and there is still more left to pick up.
We've decided we're going to continue making the effort to get whatever isn't biodegradable into the dumpster this week, including the surface detritus of broken glass and plastics and metals, and the rest we'll just keep cleaning up as we clear the brush out in the weeks to come. It's what we did with our original piece of land and continue to do.
This patch of dirt we call "ours" will be better when we go than when we found it. That has to be enough.
I'm on my third day now without wearing my Fitbit - and I've had one on my wrist 24-7 for more than ten years now. It's an odd feeling. It didn't go out or anything, I just decided it's time to move the next step away from the quantified digital life for one more step toward my own peace of mind. Started when I replaced my 20-year-old digital scale that went out with a dial scale. It's timed
Whoops - the washer's on its final spin, and I'm going to get the whites out and on the line and get done what needs doing outside before it becomes unbearable. Should have a couple hours at most… I'll snag my cooling towel from the freezer after I get the towels hung up.
Love y'all!

I'd want to ride that as soon as I laid eyes on it!!
When I went to Brisbane for a conference 2 years ago, I spotted this ferris wheel out the window of the conference building and knew I had to ride it!
And then, on our last day, one my coworkers and I went up! She wanted to ride it as much as I did! 😊

Allie My patience was in short supply during our heat wave. I think having all this work done on the house is adding to it. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be taken up with getting staining, smoke detectors installed, windows adjusted (some need locks and cranking adjusted). I am also waiting on tree service to remove and finish pruning large pine in the back and some other pruning on other trees. When that happens they are dropping the power line. So I have been taking things from the freezer and frig to son's house so I only have bare bones here until this is done.
One of my pet peeves when walking DrewB is people leave scraps of food behind. Sometimes it is done intentionally like bread in the yard. DrewB got a hold of something last night. Arghhh! Some use mouse and ant poison around here so walks are not relaxing for me unless we walk in the field by the school. It was too hot to do that the past two days!
We have cooled off today which helps.
Barbara I grew up in St. Louis with no AC. We would go swim at night which did help. I was also much younger than too! LOL Parents got AC after I left home, and they were older!
We did not have AC in this house until fifteen ears ago so I learned as many tricks that I could to keep house cooler. Even with the AC I have now I did all my tricks watered lawn early in morning as it evaporates it helps to cool. Shut off rooms that are not used. close drapes where sun is beating in (because of new windows was not able to do that one as much) Today I turn mini split units on in morning to get ahead of the heat. Since I have mini splits so I only had the bedroom one on overnight. Because I have mini splits I also have fans going on through out the house to get the cool air circulating. I do have tall trees here which also help keep home cooler. I did similar things at son's house and set thermostat high. I do this to help with humidity in the home.

I don't know why it didn't go in the spoiler … sorry. At least I got the photos smaller.

Beth the pictures did not make the spoiler. Love to see them.
Lanette looked at the article. One of the first things I did after DH passing was to delegate the Microwave to the basement. I have not missed it and enjoy the extra counter space. We did not have an over the stove model. Food can do wonders, but I am also realistic about the quality of our water, soil, and air. So I do what I can with my diet, my personal products, my cleaning products. I sleep with an air purifier going. The varnish and stain that will be used on my new windows will be water based which will make them far less toxic.
There is more info on cancer in going back to the theory that cancer is a metabolic illness. Years ago a scientist observed that the mitochondria in cancerous cells were not functioning correctly. He also observed they were using glucose as food. Unfortunately there are so things that damage our mitochondria. The best we can do is reduce exposure to toxic quantities in our environment (this includes stress) and making our diet as healthy as we can. This includes reducing foods that spike our insulin. Those with type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetic make themselves more vulnerable. This theory also can explain why so many are getting cancer with no genetic history.
Dogs have it worse than we do 1 in 2 dogs now will get cancer before age ten. On walks they are breathing in the chemicals people put on their lawns. Kibble is heated at such a high temp that the fats become toxic plus the quality of the ingredients have much to be desired. Often they are over vaccinated. Because of the fear of heartworm and flea and ticks they are given a monthly pesticide. This does not include all the drugs given to them to help them with the symptoms of itchy and bald spots created by a bad diet.
I read a story of a dog who had the condition DrewB had that died at age six. She was given the conventional treatment of steroids and blood transfusions. DrewB will turn 9 tomorrow. I did not go down the conventional road. I changed her diet, no more pesticides, only vaccines if proven necessary.
We have more power over our health than we think we do…

Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD on bridges: I don't like bridges either. I will ride as long as someone else is driving, but I avoid them whenever I can. On my recent trip from Mississippi to New Mexico, when crossing Louisiana, I believe the entire trip through was on a bridge! Water on both sides of the road most of the way! I'm not comfortable with deep water so very nervous! Then one bridge we came to looked like the picture! So glad I was not driving!!

Two hours outside and I'm done, done, done, done…
The job's not done, of course, just me. Did get the laundry out on the line and bit of garbage picked up and a bit of brush cut, and now I'm back inside for the day. As I figured, the humidity has dropped already to 76% and will drop another 15 points or so. The towels should dry nicely.
Was going to get the cardboard burned, but decided it will wait until tomorrow when I don't have clean laundry on the line. It would probably be fine, they're quite far apart from each other, but it can wait one more day. I feel as if I sweated a gallon… letting the inside a/c cool me down, and when that get's uncomfortable, time to get in the shower.
On second thought, since I'm grubby anyway, I might get things moved around in the back room. Just more painting prep - need to get the tape and mud on the new wall, but a bit of moving things and disassembling shelves, etc., has to be done beforehand. Might as well do it now while I'm sweaty and dirty!
Might try to get into town tomorrow or Wednesday and get my hair cut. It's getting awful curly around the back…
Later,
Love,
