Heather and M I was raised by a mother who thought giving praise would give me a big head.
Funny thing is I noticed that my students did better when I praised them when they did well. I also noticed I try harder when someone notices I do well at something.
I wish I had praised my children more by telling them how handsome and proud of them I am.
I am getting better at telling my younger son how proud I am of him and how handsome he is. I'll never forget how devastating it was to me when my MIL was looking at a framed picture that contained my two boy and her other grandson and she pointed to my youngest son and said how ugly he was. I was speechless that she could say something that cruel. I had to keep telling myself she was in the throws of alzheimers. (It was an adorable picture of him in 7th grade.) I knew I had to minimize the time he spent with her. Difficult when DH didn't have a clue what she could be like. She always turned on the charm around him.

😀 A bit cooler today. I got my walk and the watering finished before 9 AM. My Thursday walking friend came earlier than her usual time to avoid the noon sun. My dog walking friend came on schedule at 4 and we both noticed that it was cooler than it had been. Otherwise I did my usual stuff—zoom meeting, bike, knitting, and tv. I do most of my reading in the bathroom or at bedtime or in the middle of the night if I have trouble going back to sleep after taking the dogs out.
😀 Lisa, one summer we spent a week in Arkansas in our RV. It was hot and muggy and Jake kept warning me to watch for snakes when I was walking the dogs. We went to a salon to get our hair cut and the stylist making conversation asked us where we were from and when we told her, she said that we must be really loving the weather in Arkansas compared to the rainy place we came from.
🍅 Lots of little green tomatoes but no red ones yet.

Been working and exercising. Even if it’s just to walk around the block on days I work. Did a 20-40-60 workout today.
Jess and Colby have decided that they’re going to stay here for awhile. Trying to get her things here. She’s going to have a mover bring stuff here and then to a storage unit. We think next weekend she’ll bring her cats here because you know that they’ll be constantly underfoot with the movers. Ganon won’t be any problem. Jess keeps saying that Colby can’t decide things, and I’m afraid she’s right. He is constantly making this comments like “if we move … then maybe we can put … there”. Not to mention the fact that we need to keep some room available because they’re going to be coming in a few weeks to do the deck (last we heard). She’s supposed to be here tonight to bring more of her plants
Barb – right now I’m on an antibiotic and a cough suppressant pill. I suspect that I took the cough suppressant pill without having had food for a while. If I take it with something on my stomach, I don’t have a problem. But it all went away the next day. You rock teacher!
Barbie – Vince went out to the water meter yesterday, he was going to do some testing (I really don’t know what). Anyway, he said the meter looks different. So my guess is that the water company changed it
Rebecca – so happy for you finding out all those things
Lanette – since we didn’t lose any water. I truly believe that the meter was broken, especially since it looks like they changed it. But it’s good to know that they’ll probably bill us for the amount of water we used last year. Thank you so much for your concern. Yes, in a few hours, I was fine. Just very busy with Jess coming here, her changing plans all the time, the guys should be herein a few weeks to rebuild the deck (it is getting worse) so have to think about where their things will go plus where ours will go once we have to bring everything from the porch and the deck in the house.
Rita – hope the dizziness is gone by now
Margaret I am so impressed with your healthy eating and all you share with us
Allie – regarding Kyle, I was always taught “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”. Therefore, I’ll keep my mouth shut
Debbie – so sorry about the cat. You gave her a good life. Not too many people would have done what all you did
Heather – how wonderful for the kids. So excited for your cruise. Can’t wait to go on it with you virtually. Yea Edie!
Carol – so sorry for your son (and you)
Got my hair cut yesterday. Nothing new, just a trim
Been going in the pool. The water was 92 yesterday. Not refreshing at all. Went in the pool at the Y today. At least it was refreshing.
Debbie – prayers for your husband. It’s going to be rough for him but I know you’ll be there for him
Lisa – lovely pillows. I think I like the glasses on the right better
Beth – congrats on the new truck
Ordered some shorts from JC Penney. To get free shipping to the house, I ordered 5 different sizes. That’s one of the reasons I hate buying clothes online. That is, unless I’ve tried them on in the store and just want a different color. Now I’ll have to go thru the hassle of returning them to the store. But I also know that for some things I take one size, for others another size. Oh well.

8. We soaked for 2 hours in the Hot Springs … mainly just floating and relaxing.
9. The weather outside was frightful … but it made for great waves!
10. Driving and talking with my husband.
11. More talking with my husband including discussing health and aged care (areas in which I work … and live).
12. Writing the worries down came on Monday 14th.
13. Any negative thoughts I had were regarding the weather and the condition of the Bass Strait. I opted to sleep.
14. Not too much outside (weather) but I could see a lot of the outside from inside our house.
15. Back to work, getting myself organised with those achievable goals.
16. Back to work in the office and great to talk to work colleagues! I consider myself fortunate to work with the group of people in my office.
17. Working with data and technical writing.
18. Getting some of the small stuff done so I can focus on the things that matter. ☺️

What Happens to Your Blood Pressure When You Exercise Every Day
My blood pressure has certainly dropped significantly since I have been exercising just about every day … which also resulted in me losing weight, which probably helped too.

Welp, I wasted a pen by not taking the cap off so when I pressed down on the plunger it squirted out inside its container, instead of in me. I was like that looks weird, then knew what I had done. I took the cap off and it squirted in the garbage can. Such a doh! moment! I then had to take out another. Its been a busy day!
Husband took me out for lunch at a Mexican place, and I had 7 chips with salsa, a crispy taco, and a bowl of pozole soup. I took half the soup home, had for dinner with a protein shake and bar (love those Magic Spoon bars). I was within calories but my sodium was over, and my fat by 14 or so. Drinking a lot of water tomorrow!
We picked up our car, and though there is more bells and whistles we don't need, she drove smoother, quieter, and definitely had more get up and go than the Chevy. I swear the Chevy was glaring at me when we drove away.😥💖. When we drove by after going grocery shopping, and headed to the restaurant, the Chevy was put in the back parking lot. Oh boohoo! She was my first car I learned in, so its hard. I will never drive this new car, but it will be easier for husband to drive.

I thought I would show you an example of one of the excursions we've booked. You can see that Saga are very good about telling you how strenuous that particular excursions is, and what obstacles to expect. They have excursions for every grade of ability, including what they call 'panorama' where you don't have to get off the coach. John is going on a couple of strenuous hikes, but he did decline the one which mentioned very slippery rocks! 😂 While he is doing the hikes, I am booked on a trip.
We are both doing this one.
I think that might give you some idea. I don't like steep winding roads, but they are never as bad as they say.

Heather: In many ways, I think it’s a matter of semantics, and culture. I’m quite sure that you valued and encouraged them to do their best.
I value and encourage any skills or talents which my family have. They get praise for their achievements, academic and otherwise, as an acknowledge of their efforts. Reward and encouragement is very important for everyone, not just children. I am, of course, a product of my own childhood experiences.
I came from working class stock, and education was valued for boys, but not girls. At home, I was often told I was “too clever for my own boots”, and seldom praised for my academic achievements, (or any others for that matter). I was made to leave school as soon as it was legal, in order to add to the family income. I did, however, have a very supportive grandmother, and aunts, especially my godmother. My brother, on the other hand, was praised, and encouraged, and sacrifices were made so that he could go to grammar school when he passed his 11+ exam. My parents refused to sign the papers for me to sit the exam when it was my turn. It was just the way it was in those days.
He left grammar school at 14 to pursue an army education in the Officers Cadet School in Catterick in England, much to my mother’s dismay. He did well in the army, reaching non-commissioned level., and was at the forefront of computer development, which served him well in civilian life.
I, on the other hand, encouraged by my in-laws, studied and got my teachers degree as a mature student. I was never going to be content with not being fiscally independent. My father didn’t understood why I wanted to do it, as “I had a husband to support me”. My mother, who had already passed away, could have told him! She worked as a domestic to keep us well feed, as his idea of ‘support’ was sadly, lacking. He gave her barely enough to pay the bills.
Despite this, I loved both my parents. although I was often at war with my mother in my teens, as we were both strong willed women. In later years, I realised that she must have been very dis-satisfied with her life, and I decided that I would learn from her mistakes, and mine! 😂
I will be forever grateful to my dear in-laws, who supported us throughout my studies, and beyond. It allowed us to prosper by using our talents fully.
I fully supported and encouraged my own daughters throughout their chosen educational paths, and fostered any talent they showed. They were rewarded for their all achievements, (stickers, small treats etc) and encouraged to make their own choices. I did the same for my grandchildren.
I value education for its own sake, and have continued to champion and pursue life-long learning into retirement with my volunteer work with The Third age Trust (U3A).
That was longer than I intended 😂TGIF: not that it’s much different to other days in retirement. The only problem with retirement is that you never get a day off !!!

Good morning my friends!
Michele glad you feel better. And Yay for the new water meter! Sounds like a painless fix to what could have been a major hassle.
Rebecca yes a new car is a major transition.
Allie getting a wheelchair is smart. People are more understanding and patient with you.
Terri my family was good with education for women. I'm sorry you faced that discrimination. I was taught that my intelligence was an inherited gift, and that my efforts were irrelevant. So I did fine in high school, but not up to my potential. My ADHD got totally missed. I was an exchange student my senior year of high school which messed up my math education, then I fell apart in college. Looking back I understand the challenges better, but at the time I was destroyed and ashamed. But I graduated and life went on.
I better sign off. House cleaner coming in thirty minutes.
May you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!

Morning, my chicks, from the still steamy Arkansas River Valley,
Gastroenterologist at 10:30 this morning, so I need to be in the shower by 8:30 at the latest. Should be an interesting visit. I am very pleased with the results of the higher Skyrizi dose. It cut my bathroom visits in half within three days of taking it. Normal is definitely in sight.
Terri - Thank you for that, it's the most I've seen you open up here about your past. I went back to school as a mature student as well, at 35, and for similar reasons. I think it teaches us to be lifelong learners, rather than simply leave learning for young people.
Pip - and everyone else who commented, thanks for the comments on the glasses. I think I like the new change too! Opened up my side to side and up and down range of vision with the much larger lenses, and definitely see edges better at every distance. Carol - the brand name of these is Betsey Johnson.
I did talk to the eye doc while I was there about struggling to tell between colors that are quite close in shade and tone, like navy blue and black. That's important when you play with color as much as I do!
He said that my eyes were doing great, but that losing those abilities is normal with aging. When cataracts become an issue between 70 and 75 years old (and he assured me that mine will 😟), and those are removed, it will give me back that ability to discern between colors. In the meantime, very bright lighting will help. Mildly depressing, the thought of cataracts, but will of course get a second opinion. Of course it instantly made me think of Kim and her vision struggles. Hope you're doing well, my friend!
Got laundry going, will get the towels out on the line before I go to town to the doc. Hope it's a grand Friday for everyone… time to get a couple things done before I get in the shower…
Later, my dears,
Love,
Lisa, where the heat advisories just got broadcast in the Arkansas River Valley4 -
Thanks Terri. When I married the first time, I was about halfway through my first Bachelor's degree and quite a few people asked me if I were going to quit and make a home for my husband. Quite a few people were surprised when I said, "No". I got the same question again when my current husband had his accident.
Fortunately, my parents were supportive of my decision to continue with my education.
I was also a mature-aged student. Got my second Bachelor's degree at 42 and Master's at 53.
One of the reasons I have spent so many years acquiring education is because I enjoy it, even if it is a lot of work. Another reason is because it increases my possibilities of being financially independent.
As the sole wage earner now, I am very happy I made the educational decisions to acquire both practical education (trades) and academic education so that I can support my husband and me.
As a person who will likely be working for a long time yet, I am very happy that my education and experience has landed me in my current position, a job I like.
It's been a lot of work over the decades and well worth celebrating.
I value education for its own sake, and have continued to champion and pursue life-long learning into retirement with my volunteer work with The Third age Trust (U3A).
Terri, I've always admired this about you and I've often thought that when (if??) I retire, I would like to pursue more education at the reduced rate of a senior student. ☺️

Today …
Decent walk (see image) plus another 3500 steps.
This evening my husband and I went to the symphony. We haven't been for a little while and it was really nice to be back. I dressed up a bit.
I've also been unpacking, catching up on laundry and doing all the little things that come after you've been away for a little while.

Lisa … glad to know that my weirdness validated your weirdness! LOL! I like the new glasses too. Before, I saw your glasses … now I see your face.
Praising education … interesting topic. I suspect that the era you grew up in and the culture you lived in determine your experience with academic praise and expectations. Times have certainly changed. There is also a difference between excessive praising and encouraging. One seems a lot like bragging.
Visited my mom yesterday and she lamented how much she missed me since my last visit … which had been two days earlier. Sigh. She gets plenty of interaction at her facility and receives visitors from my church and friends often.
Cooler and less humid weather today. I've been asked to provide dessert for a bridal shower I'm attending this evening, so have decided to take Mini Lemon Tarts and Mini Cheesecake Bars. Both are super easy to make.
Have a good day!

I think culture has a lot to do with it. Especially the culture around how women "should" behave.
I've always been proud of what I've accomplished in various things — education, cycling, etc., and have celebrated those things, but I have had trouble being vocal about it until recently. Fortunately, my mentor at work, and others have been encouraging me to, essentially, brag more. And it's a good thing!
Where, in the past, I would have played down a lot of what I've done in job interviews and elsewhere, more recently, I have been confidently announcing and showcasing what I have done.
There are heaps of articles and talks about this …
BTW - For me, accomplishments are accomplishment. Everyone has their own talents and skills (academic, sports, arts, compassion, etc. etc. etc.) which they can employ for their accomplishments. All of them should be celebrated!

Another good night sleep.
Working at being more mindful of my eating. Not suddenly doing away with higher oxalate foods just reducing. Learned too drastic a change in your diet can cause oxalate dumping. Something to avoid.
I am substituting herbs like basil, rosemary, oregano for salt and pepper(high in oxalate). I still use a bit of pepper just not overdoing it.
Another upside is my heel is doing better too.
M thank you for those articles. I think my mom grew up in an era where women were supposed to be meek and mild. It is a balance. It is important to be proud of yourself for your accomplishments. Where it gets to a point where all you can do is talk about yourself and not acknowledge others how well they are doing that is where people can get the rep of being a braggart.
The problem with being the meek and mild type is it can leave you vulnerable to others that can take advantage and or be abusive towards you!
Goal to be assertive…not VERB…victim,entitled, rescued, blame…

Bragging and women - It's an interesting topic, as I took a long, long time to acknowledge my service in the military. I still don't know what to say when someone says "Thank you for your service." Our generation was taught to never, ever brag, from our earliest days, and in particular Southern women.
Weirder still, one of the ways to say something is far too expensive is to say they're proud of it. When a Southern woman says, "Well Cadillac sure is proud of those cars," she does not mean they're proud of them, but that they want far too much money for them. Never heard a man use that term, though, come to think of it.
Anyway… just popped in to kill some time before I leave for town. No point in arriving early for this doctor, he is always late to his appointments. Busy, busy, you know. I'll leave my opinion of that to your imagination. 🤣
Will stop and pick up some potato salad for Corey on the way back. Apparently, he wasn't THAT thrilled with the last batch of it that I made for him. I still think it's a terrible use of a potato, and maybe my disdain for the dish shows in my creation of it. They say you can taste the love people put in dishes, can you taste the distaste they feel for it? 😜😂😋
Maybe I'll eat a little something before I go. It would probably be a good idea.
Later,
Love,
Lisa in AR4 -
Enjoy the day! Hope your doctor's appointment goes smoothly. Regarding the addition of love and care into cooking, I haven't done much of that lately. I eat food for fuel and my aim isn't ta make it pretty! Maybe two weeks ago I did make a nice roast with all the trimmings. Its nice to be able to taste food as I go. In the past, when I dabbled in fasting, my eating window was not open so I had to just wing it and hope the beef broth wasn't too thin or too salty.
Potato salad sounds gosh awful! (My medication doing its work to keep food appeal at its minimum).

Women and education/praise I don't remember ever being told 'I love you' by a parent until I was an adult. My mom now says it all the time. In elementary and High Schools, I was in the Honor Society and took college courses in high school. When I was a senior and had watched a demonstration about computers, I knew that is what I wanted to do. So made an appointment with the school counselor (a nun, I went to Catholic elementary and high schools) she told me that was a job for men and I should become a secretary. I looked at her and said then why am I taking all college courses and did well on them? She just told me to go back to class. After that, I gave up on even trying in school and got into trouble a lot my senior year. Somehow, I still managed the honor society and graduated with honors. I imagine sometime what a different life I would have had if I even had a modicum of encouragement from someone. I got my Associates at 39, my bachelor's at 45, and my 2 masters in my 50's. All done part time.
Working at the visitor center today. I am enjoying that 3 hours.
Thought for today:
Why did the elephant leave the circus?
He was tired of working for peanuts.

Poor John had a tooth come off his plate at lunch today, and a pin loss. I suggested he ring the place that mended if last time, and he did, after a lot of negative thoughts, saying they wouldn't be able to do anything. . . . 😏 They said they could fit him in if he came straight away, (they normally make things just for dentists), so we got on the bus together and he got off in Hove to find the man. I carried on to M&S, as I thought it was going to be cooler today. No it wasn't! 😰
I almost, nearly, bought a black maxi skirt that I had tried on, but thought better of it at the last second and put it back. I was having trouble envisioning what to wear on the top, and it was a bit young and Boho. I bought some gorgeous raspberries instead and a large bottle of fizzy water.
For some reason there were no buses at all for 15 minutes. Normally there's one every two minutes and a choice of six. Eventually I got on one that wasn't ideal, but the extra walking doesn't do me any harm. I imagine there must have been some kind of accident, stopping them getting through. I was HOT. The bus was muggy and crowded, but still least I had got myself out of the house!
John had left the plate with the man, and he had mended it by 4 pm. When John went back for it, it had to be finely adjusted eight times, to get it totally comfortable. He requested cash from John (!), no receipt, and charged him £80. Bargain! He came home very relieved.
Homemade pizza and a green salad for dinner, followed by raspberries and double cream. The pizza is rolled out super thin and we have half each. Friday night is wine night. Something cheeky from Puglia. I have an early John Nettles Midsomer Murders saved up. I know we've seen it before, but I love all the old actors, most of whom are dead now! I rarely rewatch the Neil Dudgeon ones. It all got annoyingly ridiculous.
Looking forward to my evening, and happy for John.😃

Lisa - The new frames are neat! So glad they widen your field of vision, which is so important. Also good to hear the Skyrizi is doing the job for you. I just looked at your ten day forecast. Ack! Is this typical July weather for you or is the furnace really stoked this year?
Rebecca - sorry about the oopsie with your injection. That sounds like something I would do, lol. Are you and DH planning a road trip your new car to try it out?
Rita - my DH's mom was French-Canadian, his mom retained a bit of an accent. His dad was Italian, grandparents immigrated from Italy. So DH grew up immersed in both languages, to an extent, when around his grandparents and other family members. He was able to pick up conversational Spanish easily, at least enough to get by. You probably learned some French-Canadian curse words. 😁 He had several.
Terri - thank you for sharing your history. You're right - that's just the way it was back then in many families. A bit about mine:
My farmer parents were never pushy about good grades or academic achievements. If anything, problem solving and responsibility = work ethic were emphasized. (Around here, being a "farm kid" still brings highly sought practical skills to an employer.) My siblings and I all graduated from Indiana University and I think it was peer pressure that drove our desire to achieve in high school and beyond. We had scholarships, grants, and worked summers to pay for our schooling, with dad kicking in a little. My sis and I chose Sociology, which was popular in the early 70's and my brother went the sciences route, to eventually become an optometrist. The only comment I remember was my dad saying I should have taken some secretarial classes so I could get a job. I ended up with some good secretarial and administrative assistant jobs anyhow, lol. Probably thanks to computers coming on the scene.
It used to be that in order to get a management position, at least in my county, a person had to have at least a 4 year college degree. Liberal arts was OK, so I finally was able to use my B.A. 😁These days, most require "a combination of education and experience" which lets them qualify for higher paying jobs, and I think that's more realistic.
Had a great lunch with M yesterday. We have so much in common, past-job wise and health wise - we don't run out of things to talk about. She's T2 diabetic and is battling A1C and having to watch "white" carbs like pasta and breads, which her husband loves and he's an excellent cook. She tried the GLP-1 injections but her body couldn't handle the side effects. I always look forward to our monthly lunches, they are such a treat.
I have fawns in the front yard and mom in the back yard. Picked blueberries at Rogers early this morning, I see plenty of deer footprints but they don't appear to be eating either the berries or the bushes which have a lot of new growth.

Hello Ladies;
You guys never fail to give me good advice. My BP is great now, and the nurse is always surprised. I need to continue to exercise, because the MRI showed some ischemic vessels or narrowing of the vessels in my brain. So I am at risk for stroke. Losing over 100 pounds through diet and exercise probably prevented that. So my number one inspiration is to exercise. My doctor also put me on baby aspirin. I get enough aspirin when I treat my migraines. I also injured my Cervicocranial junction when I flipped over in my inner tube and hit my head at the bottom of the pool. That is why I have neck pain. Thanks for reminding me of that, Machka. I am also a lifetime learner who is stifled because it costs so much to get educated in MS. In Chicago, they will cover the cost of my Master of Science in Nursing. You all encourage me to continue to learn. I thought I was too old.
Rebecca, you should try Barbells protein bars, they are so good. Built is good too, but they suddenly stopped making bars and focused more on puffs. Perhaps for financial reasons.
Lisa, I love both glasses on you. You have a pretty face, so you can not go wrong. The ones on the right show more of your face than the dark-framed ones.
Annie, good for you getting help around the house. I think getting a sitter when you want to work out is a great idea. I know with my mom, I needed to have time away from my mom to de-stress.
Well, it's time for me to take a nap for work tonight. You all have a wonderful weekend.
XO,
Mo in Mississippi
