@SparkSpringtime69, I’m thinking that maybe MissMay may not have been comfortable enough in the environment to create a group. But I could be wrong

My initial concern was that people would have to join to view and read, but by keeping it public, anyone can view, read, they only need to join if they wish to actively post.

I do want people to be able to visit, see our dialogue and then decide if they want to participate in the group.

I don’t think you have to join to see who’s is the group. You only need to join to post comments. @LittleSurferGirl7

    …..

I do like hearing it’s still kept in public view so anyone can read in advance and decide if they want to join and participate.
I imagine a group could even provide a greater sense of commitment for those abstaining or moderating as it is different than a general discussion.
Thanks for opening up the dialog.

@Fursian how did you get the gray bars to the left of the text you wanted to quote. It's been really frustrating me that I can't separate out a few sentences or a paragraph that I want to respond to without quoting a much longer post. Thanks for any help.

@itladyee I think an open group is an interesting idea. Having all the information and resources in one place for everyone and being able to look back through past monthly threads sounds like it could be a quality of life addition. A disadvantage maybe, would be that the nature of groups is very ‘out of sight out of mind’, with the real potential of dividing (some people thrive in groups, some not so much), but promoting the group each month in this sub-category like other groups do could make this less of an issue.

A plus point having the LA threads as an open discussion here in the forums is the visibility, I see them as more accessible to those old and new. I don’t see any harm in testing things out, though.

If I may make a suggestion, I see the benefits of each. If it wouldn’t be too much up-keep (I’d quite understand if it was), having this thread AND an open group could be the best of both worlds. I can visualize there being a handy link back to the LA group within each new month’s opening post. The opening posts could give a nod to all the useful information and resources for those interested in learning more (I know I was), which could offer a solution to streamlining the LA threads. I like your idea of the mini challenges as well, and could see the potential with them for people.

@SparkSpringtime69 For now until the new format starts to make sense to me, I am just highlighting the bits of people’s posts that I want to quote and then copy/pasting into the ‘Leave a Comment’ box and then clicking on the Element Toolbar symbol that’s located to the left of the reply box, this opens up four menus, with the third one (Toggle Special Formats Menu) being where the quote function is. Selecting the quote symbol should place the grey bars. I’ve not figured out how to put the person’s username along with their quote like how we could with the old quoting function, I feel like I am missing something obvious, lol. I am using the website version of MFP.

    @Michieb125

Congratulations on reaching your targets this month! You should feel very proud.

BTW - Any way you can send some of that 'cool summer' to SC, we're in an extreme heat warning today, with temps in the high 90's and a heat index putting us at 110.

We've been dealing with this for a couple of weeks now, almost every day. ☀️🔥

Here we go!!! I’ve put together my vision of what a group would look like for Less Alcohol.

The only thing that would need to be done each month (and can be done in advance) is to create the new month in discussions.

We can enhance the announcements over time with content from prior and future months.

Take a look around. I have created an area for you to post feedback in the group. Please post there, not here….

I have also added a few posts for new people who may stumble upon the group while we are in deciding mode as it is a public group.

There are a couple of announcements that will be deleted if we decide to move forward with this format.

It’s about 80% complete but I wanted to get feed back now, before I start to fine tune.

Feel free to post under July for testing purposes….

Here's the link: aka Test drive!

I did finish the bottle of wine I bought for cooking last night, but I planned on it. It was only 2 glasses, but the way I poured it made it appear to be 3. I didn’t mean to pour a half glass on the first one (menopause brain fog kicked in); but I did which ended up being a half glass, full glass, and half glass. It was weird, but it satisfied that 3rd glass desire. After I did that, I was satisfied. I wasn’t wishing I had more.

    Count is now AF-23, A-4.

Today will be AF, and probably the rest of the week. My son gets his wisdom teeth removed Tuesday, so I’ve taken off work for the day to take care of him. It’s my 1st day off since being in this new role. I’m actually using PTO instead of comp time, so I don’t feel obligated to get in front of my computer at any point during the day. We’ll see what Wednesday looks like after a day off… this could deter me from using PTO in the future. I’m afraid to see how many emails pile up in one day.

I stated advantages to doing a group earlier when I first suggested the group concept, the main ones are:

**No more copying and pasting the intro each month— saved time! With the change made to MFP back in March, copying and pasting can be quite the pain to get things all organized and consistent, bullet and font size, etc. Possibly it’s just a me thing, but I like it when things are consistent and easy to read. I can literally set it and forget it….

**Resources and links are always available at the top via announcements. You don’t have to flip back to prior pages to find something. The information is always right there in announcements.

**Easier to look back at past months if we ever want to reflect or reference something. Easier to find something. You mentioned alcohol as a carcinogen…perfect example. I don’t remember when that was mentioned but 1) it was never added because it wasn't easy to go back and add to those first few pages and by the time the next month was created, it was forgotten. It can now be added in real time announcements. Do you recall when that was posted so I can gather all of the information in its entirety?

**Keeps everything contained and organized in one place.

But, under "Announcements", there is a section for feedback from existing members. But, there is no way to post. As stated in the intro, you have to join to post, otherwise it’s view only.

1)The most important things for me…the benefits from cutting back or quitting alcohol have been moved to the very end. 2)And, you purposely have to click on it to see them. 3)One thing that was never put in that section, but should be, is that alcohol is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. 4)Why would you try to hide all of the risks of drinking alcohol and the benefits of cutting down or quitting drinking alcohol from people who are considering drinking less alcohol?

1)The areas under the announcement are auto sorted by MFP. I can play around with it but may not be able to control how they are listed. It’s probably at the end because it was the first thing that I added. I may be able to “trick” the system for ordering reasons.

    2) yes, you do have the click the announcement. vs scroll back pages to find.

3)Exactly, one of the reasons for the group. Easier to add new information and findings for people to find at a later time.

    4) Not hiding anything.

I won’t be making the decision; it will be a group decision. If the majority does not like it, then nothing will change. It was just an idea that I wanted to explore.

You are correct, this discussion has been around since 2017 as noted in the intro. The intention isn’t to fix what isn’t broken, but to make the space more welcoming, functional, and easier to navigate for long-time members and new people as well as simple to maintain.

    Appreciate the candor.

@NonnieDoiron , you are still doing very well!! Good luck with the wisdom teeth removal and good for you to step away from the computer!

    15 AF

    3 LA

    9 A

I really like these discussion threads and I don't really know how groups work but I'll give it a go if that's what folks want 😊

Good luck with the wisdom teeth appointment for your son today @NonnieDoiron - I usually pour my wine similarly to your example from last night! Or in 3-4 oz pours. Feels like 3 but it IS Less :).

Thanks for sharing your vision to create an organized and functional thread for this dedicated Less Alcohol community @itladyee

Started my second vacation of the month yesterday. Still aiming to drink less than I did last month, though Saturday threw me off a bit with an unplanned drink. If I do end up drinking on this trip, I’m limiting it to one—hoping to break even on my “A” days.

    AF = 17

    A = 10

On another note, I’ve joined the group. I’ve been participating on this discussion board for about six months now, and it’s been a really valuable space. It’ll take me a bit to get used to how group access works differently compared to the board. Honestly, I’m not sure I would’ve joined if it had started as a group, so I’ve been thinking about how that shift might impact visibility and accessibility for new folks.

@itladyee But I also totally understand the need to streamline and reduce admin workload—so I’m open to the change and curious to see how it evolves.

Looking forward to connecting more through the group and continuing to work on this month’s goals—one day (and one decision) at a time.

@itladyee here are the pastry recipes

I bought puff pastry, thawed both sheets, and rolled it out a little. I cut each one into 8 rectangles.

For the filling, I had two blocks of cream cheese that I let soften.

I whipped one block until fluffy, added a packet of sugar in the raw and whipped more. I divided that as evenly as I could and placed on 8 of the puff pastry rectangles. Then, I took some strawberry pie filling (I had left over in the freezer) and put a little bit on each. Folded them over and crimped the edges with a fork. Brushed the tops with lots of melted butter. Baked at 400 degrees for 15-20 mins. I made a glaze that was about 3/4 cup powder sugar, a good squeeze of vanilla paste (measured with the heart), and some milk and drizzled over the top.

With the other block of cream cheese, I whipped until fluffy. Mixed in a heaping tbsp of Everything Bagel seasoning and about a 1/2 to 1/3 cup shredded Parmesan. Divided as evenly as possible between the remaining 8 rectangles of puff pastry. Folded them over, crimped edges with a fork, brushed the tops with lots of melted butter, and sprinkled more of the seasoning on top. Then, baked those at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

Very easy and not a single one made it to today. 🤣🤣🤣

Next time, I’m going to add cherry pie filling instead of strawberry. I was also thinking about doing these options too:

    • peanut butter and jelly
    • Marshmallow and Nutella
    • Bacon and/or sausage, egg and cheese
    • Goat cheese with olive oil, kalamata olives, sun dried tomatoes, and roasted garlic
    • Apple pie filling with strussel topping and glaze
    • Vanilla custard with chocolate icing (easy eclair)
    • Ham and cheese
    • Tomato, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil

I think I should stop or I’m going to buy the store out of puff pastry. 🤣🤣🤣
