Debbie: This reminded me of wishing a water bill would come. I have been watering the sod I purchased every other day. Last year I had a friend who told me her water bill from a sprinkler system was 600 dollars! I wish I could stop watering now, but it is so very hot I fear losing the sodl
The electric bill came and it was okay. I was surprised really. This is an 80s house and it came with plantation shutters. Maybe it is pretty well insulated.

My middle son has his house wired up with siri, or Alexa, some gal that turns on lights and shuts them off. Every night their rhomba vacuums their living room. When they want to set a baking timer they just ask her to set it. Its quite amazing!

The problem is he doesn't like it anymore. He doesn't like working. In his industry, there is no cutting back. He has suggested it in the last couple places he's been, and they won't do it. The understanding is that you work 50-60 hours a week, minimum, all times of the day/night and weekends. He is trying not to do that, but when the workload expectation requires it, it's difficult to refuse. He has been working for start-ups, pre-IPO for the past ten years or so. It's just grueling. We've talked ad nauseum about this, and if he were 10 or 20 years younger, he would love it and just dive in, but he's tired. And he's worked since he was 18, almost nonstop, and I just want him to be done. He's two years older than I am, so he'll be 67 in February. It's time.
He wants a job like I have, which is totally do-able for years and years, even with my health as shaky as it is. I go into work at about 9:00 and leave at about 3:00. I am obligated to be in my office just four days a week, so I don't go into the office on Thursdays. (I'm still in the prison on that day, but that's a completely different pace of working. A different kind of stress, but manageable.) I may grade or read or prepare for class in the evenings or weekends, but I decide. No one is screaming at me at all hours of the day to get the work done. I also work only 32 weeks out of the year. If I teach in the summer, I'm paid extra, and I can say no. He has taught college before, and would love to do it again, even though it means half the pay. But he doesn't have a doctorate, so the opportunities are limited.
He just needs to be done. In our conversations over the past months discussing it, I have been hesitant to give an opinion because I feel strongly it should be up to him, so I just try to ask questions and make suggestions about how to think about things. After literally hours talking this over, last week I finally just said it out loud. "I want you to be done. I don't want you to work anymore." I had already told him in June, while we were on vacation, that I absolutely do not want him working next summer, so I asked him to put an end date goal of May 2026. But I've had it. He deserves to be done. I mean how much is enough? We have literally no debt. All cars paid for. RV paid for. House paid for. Yes, we still have enormous college tuition/dorm to pay, but honestly. It will be covered. I'm not even the slightest bit worried about it. And worse comes to worse, my son has money (!!!), and we live 15 minutes from the college, so he could live here. Seriously. This is not an issue.
My logic falls on deaf ears. He's just terrified. 😕
In the meantime, we went to see Fantastic 4 this afternoon, and that two-hour break was good for him.

Hi Flea, My husband was terrified as well. He did have a position where he could keep going into his 70s. He worked despite declining health. In 2021 He received his ALS diagnosis and retired. In early 2023 he was gone.
He always said he loved his job and wanted to work. When he was gone, I received a hand written note from one of his long time doctors saying my husband had told him he only continued to work to benefit his family. I don't even know how this doctor knew he had passed. A very well intended letter and appreciated. But a part of me died when I read his words.
What are the words of that song, "If I Could Take Back Time"..was that Cher? I hope your husband retires and has a long and happy retirement. I hope he enjoys his family. My husband always felt we were locked into the house. He dreaded any thought of any move. He was a bright, kind man but lacked flexibility. He would be amazed at RV Rita and her husband.
Your husband might accept there are enough assets and income for his lifetime. He might be fearful for you once he is gone. He might want to see your son through college. I hope you are able to share with him…that you and your son have the flexibility to adapt to the future and that he does not have to be a martyr. That he can retire. That these years together now are precious. Time is money but is money time? Not really.
Best,

Retirement: DH was made redundant in his late 40s. He was terrified that we wouldn’t have enough money, despite the fact that I had a good job. He need’nt have worried we were fine. After a year looking after the domestic side of our life and volunteering for a local charity, he found a job int the mental heath field, working 3 days a week, and continued to look after the domestics. It worked well for us as he really loved his new work. When I decided to take early redundancy, he wasn’t so nervous, as I still worked part time for the local examinations board. Neither of these decisions impacted our standard of living, despite his misgivings.
We had a relaxed Anniversary. Still haven’t eaten the dessert we got 😂Yesterday I did my usual local shopping trip. It was a dull day but dry. have a blessed Sunday wherever you are.

Flea - I ran the numbers to figure out if could retire early, and as it turned out, if I hadn't retired, I'm not sure I would have survived the last five years. I got awfully sick. If I'd been trying to work as well while I was going through that, I'd have probably been fired anyway, as I would have been terribly unproductive. But because I was able to rest instead of make myself even sicker by working while I was ill, and with medical help, I was able to get better. It's not an easy question, is it. But you and he would be amazed at how much less you spend when you don't have a job. And I worked from home! Still needed a lot less money once I stopped working.
Like Corey's garden, I do have my things that cost, as well, including the thrifted fabrics and the yarn for the things I make. I have made it into a small business, putting things up for sale, because these expenditures then become a business expense. If they sell, that's wonderful, but if not, then buying them becomes the cost of goods sold to make what I make, and I can write them off. Essentially a wash. I can do that for three years before the IRS considers it a "hobby," and I can't write it off anymore. 😜 Having a best friend who does our taxes helps keep me from tripping over federal rules and regs.
I've only really begun to enjoy my retirement in the last year or so, and it's been kind of amazing. Not easy to recognize my own limitations, and that's with a husband who urges me to rest and never pushes me to make or do anything! Speaking of whom… he's now up and around. We both woke up too early this morning.
Hope it's a grand Sunday, y'all,
Love you,
Lisa in AR8 -
Lisa — I agree about the energy efficient freezer.
I bought a small energy efficient freezer when I lived on my own in Winnipeg because I found it cheaper and easier to buy a few frozen things in bulk once a month or once every couple months and freeze them.
When my parents moved where they are now and I moved to Australia, they got rid of their immense "store several bodies for years" size freezer and took mine.
Currently, my husband and I have 2 small freezers (even more energy-efficient than my Canadian one) and the fridge freezer. One small freezer is in the storage unit at the moment and we use the other one. As you all know, I order groceries and have them delivered. When the delivery is over $250, the delivery is free. So it's worth it to order things on sale and freeze them now and then. I get free delivery and I save money on something we're going to eat.
The second small freezer will come back into play when the garden starts producing. A few years ago, it was full of frozen veggies from our garden then … and it will be again.
And I realise that paying for a storage unit is not a particularly good use of money. 😛 But sometimes convenience and sanity come before good financial decisions. Hopefully we won't need it any longer by the end of this year.
Does anyone watch Sweet Home Alabama?
Rosemarie — I have the DVD and have watched it a couple times.
The heat is pretty bad…in the 90s by 9:00. Quite de-motivating! And hard to live alone and be trapped in the house because of the heat! I have been watching concerts. I can't read for 16 hours! Today I did Andre Bocelli!
Maybe an online course of some sort to keep your mind active? Or a craft of some sort? Colouring?
Flea — thankfully, my IT area (data) is quiet, very very quiet. If the surrounding units start to get a tiny bit noisy, I pop on my headphones and lose myself in data, coding, and music. I feel like I go to work to take a break from home.
What if your husband looked around for a part-time job in a completely different area? Or did something like being an IT contractor, designing and building websites, teaching IT, etc.
Here, I think retired people can earn a certain amount of money before it affects their pension or whatever other retirement income.

Picked up a few things at Bunnings, including another plant. My husband got insulation for the garage roof so it won't be quite so hot/cold in there. Power savings!
Visited our storage unit and brought some things home. The process of emptying the storage unit begins! It'll be a slow process.
Went cycling!! It's my first ride this month because the winter weather hasn't been great. But today was nice and it was so good to get out there.

Good morning my friends!
Dad got up for a minute earlier and he is moving like he hurt his back. So I'm letting him sleep through church. I hope he isn't mad at me. I also cancelled lunch plans. And we can postpone the grocery store to tomorrow.
He called me by my mom's name last night for the first time. Sad. I think he wasn't paying attention.
Great tips on saving money! I guess my biggest money saving decision was moving back with my parents. It's been tough at times ( my mother's music was awful) but I went from broke to having savings again. So maybe consider a roommate.
I have no paid music or streaming services. My Dad pays for cable TV. I use free apps.
Beth even if the celebration went away your mom's birthday is a milestone. Congratulations on making it through another year of elder care!
Ange glad Buster is succeeding at house training. I remember those days!
Lisa your terrace wall area will get done little by little! Glad Zyrtec is working for you.
Heather we are more about efficiency than elegance here. Which means elegance would be a nice change!
Debbie hope your show goes well!
Michele good luck with the beds!
Kylia Yay for your sister's visit! And your Dr visit!
Margaret such clear colors on your hydrangea! I expected a grey mix.
Machka Yay for progress on your scary room!
Rita Yay for good blood work!
Allie travel is tiresome. Rest well. Hope the tremors go away.
Barbara Yay for fixing the DVD player! My sister said only my Aunt across the street would notice my Dad without his pants. She doesn't worry much.
Ginny you are so organized!
Rebecca 23 pounds down! You rock!
Rosemarie glad you moved on from that cat shelter. Volunteering shouldn't hurt you....and I used to do zoom meditation but my group fell apart.
Flea retirement is such a huge decision. Hope you find a solution that works for you.
May you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!

Machka: A Facebook advertiser was tempting me with a course in AI for 20.00. But you would have to remember to cancel I filled out the form but never submitted the payment! I am constantly being asked for 20 dollars here and 20 dollars there. My son thought it was crazy to pay any money to learn AI! But I did like the idea of a course in it!
And I decided I wanted to attend a yoga class this morning..so I am paying 15.00 for this. But looking forward to it!
I did pay money for a CPR course in 2022. That I never activated. I wonder if that is still available to me. CPR has changed from what I learned. Maybe after yoga, I will come home and see if I can get into the CPR course. Your suppose to book an appt to come in and take the test somewhere local when the course is completed.
I like the idea of earning a certificate. i am rather a nerd, Maybe Coursera has some certificate I could work towards. i would like to be able to hold a conversation about energy policy and about Foreign policy. But my husband was the person who/whom I really discussed these things with. With everyone else, I discuss the 4 G's. God, Gardening, Gym and Grandchildren!
I have missed weeks with the group. Did the group discuss The Let Them Theory? Are we allowed to discuss the Let Them Theory? I did buy the audio book…it is extremely well marketed. But I do like the sound of her voice.
My life has changed more than my postings indicate. I have a new Climate Change group, new meditation group, new book group, new writing group, people I sit with at a monthly lunch meeting. I volunteer at the food pantry. I am still active with my church but the church is aging out So I have begun to think about this. I do my own landscaping….sort of..And I try to take the dog to the dog park or out to people watch. I am trying a new hair stylist.
I am told all this is to be expected as a new widow. Especially one without much family around.
And I signed up for the cruise. And am waiting for my passport to come through. Which was rather spontaneous. But feels right for this time. I can cross it off my bucket list.
My church is aging out to the point that on Friday I attended the zoom church ladies social hour. I like these ladies. We are suppose to be going to the church to have our pictures taken for the church directory. One of the ladies quipped. This is great, we can use the same picture for our obituary!
So you can see, I probably need to straddle between this church and something else for a few years. I do help with the Sunday adult ED starting in September.
Sorry to ramble.
I had been reading some posts on an over 60 Facebook group for woman. 30K woman. The degree of family estrangement and gray divorce in that Facebook group is significant. And the women are very quick to tell other women over age 60 to leave the relationship. I can see already a difference between me, almost 66 and a woman just turned 60. It amazes me!

Went for a longer walk than normal with Lucy. I like this walk except for having to cross a cow-catcher, which is scary. Lucy had a ball chasing the Killdeer birds. I let her run loose over there. Lots of room for her to run. I got to look for birds there too. Beside the Killdeer, found Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Western Meadowlark, Blue Grosbeak, Mourning Dove, and Red-winged Blackbird. Colorful variety! My bird of the day is a Lark Sparrow. Those are by the beach all over the place in the Pavillion. They nest in there.
Talked to my ODD yesterday. My grandson (14 YO) rode one of those bucking bronco machines for 4 hours yesterday! He broke all the records for the different speeds. They are camping at a resort campground that has many different things to do for entertainment. It has a waterslide built into something that looks like a pirate ship into a big pool. I saw pictures of this place; really nice. Back to saving money, I prefer state campgrounds. Much more affordable.
Thought for today:
On the news today it said they’ve unearthed a sarcophagus in Egypt filled with chocolate and nuts.
The mummy was wrapped in gold foil, so they believe it is the legendary Pharaoh Rocher.

Okay… so I've got Dakota working on the siding, and she's a smiley little 25-year old person, which I love. The price is right - we both think it will be a couple mornings of work, and at $15 an hour, that will work out well for the price we wanted to have it done. Now to see how she does.
Rebecca - so pleased for 23 pounds gone for you! Like Machka, I started picking up things in the grocery store to find out what larger amounts weighed. Go pick up a 20-pound bag of rice or flour. It will help you realize how much gravity was dragging you toward the ground. Kind of amazing. Whenever I get down on myself for my current weight, I snap back by remembering that I am still 145 pounds lighter. So I was, effectively, carrying Kylia around while she was holding a bag of flour, like I had her in a backpack strapped to me. It's astonishing how much our bodies can handle…
Allie - I so hate it for you that, even after all the weight loss, you're still so fatigued. I hope they find a way to get that energy back for you! Keep taking care of yourself, punkin.
Terri - We've got more than half a cheesecake, cut into slices and individually wrapped, still in our freezer from Corey's birthday a month ago! Might be worth just freezing your dessert and bringing it out at Christmas! 😂 Glad you enjoyed your lovely meal for your anniversary.
Rosemarie - I think discussing The Let Them Theory is fine here, the summaries mention neither religion nor politics.
Annie - Hope your dad's not hurt!
So… I broke down and stopped at a completely different salon yesterday and got my hair cut. I really hated that last haircut, and was just annoyed every time I looked in the mirror, so I decided to try one closer to me. At least the problem I had with it was that she left it too long, so it was fixable… This gal did a much, MUCH better job. I liked her, she asked the right questions, and my hair looks like I wanted it to look. What a relief! Gave her a 25% tip, and it was well worth it. I will go back to her, hope she stays.
Now I'm just feeling guilty because Dakota's out there working on the house and my husband's out there working in the yard, and I'm inside. But I just walked out to check on progress, and in five minutes, I was sweated out. I know I can't do it, but I can't stop feeling guilty either.
I need to get my head into one of my projects. I did start my day out writing, which was really good for me in any number of ways…
Hope it's been or is being a good Sunday for you.
So much love from the still scorchy Arkansas River Valley…

Rosemarie-- I'm so sorry about your husband. I knew he was gone, but I didn't know the story. This is my underlying fear. I want him to take care of himself and enjoy life. He doesn't think that's possible, but I think it's worth a try.
Thanks you all for hearing my rant and understanding.
I think we lost a baby junco this morning. She flew into our patio window while hubby was eating breakfast. He was devastated because he was afraid it was one of the parents. But I went out to take care of it and got a good look, and not an adult. I googled what baby juncos look like, and there was our poor sweet bird. In another week, we can probably let the cat out again. We've been trying not to disturb the nesting process.

😀 Rosemarie, I've missed you so I'm happy to hear what you've been up to. You have a lot going on. Several people mentioned "The Let Them Theory" awhile ago but there was no general discussion. I've known for a long time that it's not my job to help anyone else feel better. The book goes into greater detail and addresses lots of situations and how to handle them. I thought the book was too long and I lost interest long before I got to the end. At it's simplest, I don't accept food that's offered to me because I don't want to hurt someone's feelings nor do I go to events to please other people. I listened to a podcast interview with Mel Robbins and she was able to make her points in less than an hour of conversation.
😀 Lisa, I'm still not used to hiring people to do work for me. it feels funny to have someone working at my house while I putter at the computer or fold laundry or ride my exercise bike and watch TV, but I'm getting better at it. I don't hire anyone to do anything I can do myself.
😀 I like my own company. I Iearned how to be alone and stay home a long time ago and it is a skill that has served me well. It's even easier to be alone now in the world of technology with streaming TV, Zoom, Libby, myfitnesspal, and other online opportunities. My recumbent exercise bike allows me to be indoors and both physically and mentally active.
😀 Another surprise automatic renewal showed up on the credit card today. I figured out how to contact them and try to get the charge removed or at least not renewed again next year. I did an inventory of the auto pay items that I contracted for and every one of them sends me a reminder ahead of time (they are space rent or utilities). I have two auto ships for products (breakfast shakes and pet food) but they remind me a week ahead of time to review my auto ship so they can be stopped before they happen.

Dh retired early, at 52 for a few reasons. He had had 4 hip replacements and working 40hrs a week was really hard on him, he could retire because of a clause in their contract called 85 and out-yrs working for the company full time plus age. If it equals 85 you can retire with full pension and if you choose, you can go back part time, just not work more than 62hrs a month. He has done that for the past 10 yrs. During covid they lifted those restrictions and he was working more but they were put back in place two years ago I think it was, maybe 3. Now he works just 1 1/2 shifts a week at most. Some days he says he is not working any more-or he is taking a few months off-or he will keep working but not do the full shift, changing to half shift(it is a graveyard shift doing price changes in the store-he says that one shift overnight is too hard on him. He found that if he does quit, he cant continue to contribute to his 401K so maybe he will keep working. I don't know. He changes his mind all the time.
Same with me working. One minute he wants me to quit because he doesn't like if he has to clean up something(crumbs in the recliner)from the daycare girl, other times he wants me to keep working for the tax writeoff we still get, even with just the one girl.
I will keep working the way I am, two days a week with Ezie for as long as they want me and the county continues to pay me like they are.Time to get ready for church. Sat here a bit too long and not dressed yet
Have a wonderful Sunday Ladies

I worked part time until I was 65. DH worked as an engineer until his 50's then took an early retirement. He lasted about 4 months. It was hard for him to watch me go off to work. He studied to be a teacher and lasted about 8 months. I knew it wasn't the field for him but let it be his decision. He went back to engineering for another ten years before he retired. Then he got kidney cancer and did the best he could to do the travelling he wanted to do. I went on a few trips, his sister, our son, and a cousin traveled with him.
I love being retired. I have many interests that keep me social in positive ways and give me creative outlet. I feel very fortunate that at the moment I can afford it.
Every person story is different and has different circumstances!

Good morning ladies!
I've enjoyed reading all of the retirement stories. I listened to a speaker not long ago who said - whatever decision you make will be the right one (maybe leave out robbing banks and causing physical/ mental/ emotional harm though) but retirement might fit here. I think I wore out a few guardian angels and sent more than one to therapy during my life, but I have no regrets. 😁 Actions I took that I thought might be a blunder at the time turned out fine, looking back.
I guess my philosophy has been to make a decision, move forward, and don't look back. I grew up hearing my mom say "If only…." and "what if I would have…" during my childhood and decided to abandon that way of thinking.
Flea - thinking about your DH's upcoming retirement decisions. My DH's last years of employment were at a local community college where he was adjunct faculty and taught intro to computers and beginning electronics. An opening came up as a full time system administrator so he did that for several years until he retired. The extra $$ was nice, but also he was more "social" then and enjoyed interacting with the students and techies who were his peers. He retired after he broke his back, and he was ready by then. He was 64. When he was teaching, the students either loved him or hated him - with his Marine background, he was pretty strict, which made for a great environment who were there to learn. (He said his best students were home-schooled by the way.) Those who wanted to be disruptive and sassy were shown the door. 😁
Ginny - you mentioned your deferred comp. In WA, when I retired, I was able to pull money out of deferred comp and "buy" more service credits to boost my pension. I retired at 65 and drew my pension, but didn't have 20 years in. We lived off savings, my accrued sick and vacation payouts, DH's social security and my little part time job until I turned 66 so I could get my full social security.
Rita - glad you could let Lucy run and explore, maybe it will tire her out a bit. Love hearing about your birdwatching. We usually see goldfinches but I haven't seen any here yet.
Barbie - so glad to hear Annie is minding better and comes back to you. That's a big step. Yesterday the doe and fawns were in the yard back by the powerline when I let Rosie out and I could see her wheels turning. I said a firm "NO!" and she abandoned the idea of going after them. I think the doe could harm her if she felt Rosie was threatening her babies.
Rosemarie - you are one busy gal. Happy to hear you are finding activities you enjoy. You spent several years pretty much house-bound caring for your DH and it's so nice seeing you blossom. Neat idea hiring someone to walk your dog. How's your mom?
This morning I headed into town early and stopped at the gym. There was only one other older couple and me. I walked 20 minutes on the treadmill with 10% incline then did an extended suitcase carry with 4 kg kettlebells. The next jump on kettlebells is 8 kg and that's too much for me, so a 10# dumbbell would be next, and I have one of those at home. They do offer some Silver Sneakers and Senior Fit group classes in later mornings and afternoons. Maybe some day. I do plenty of Senior Fit with the lawn mower and weed eater right now. 😁
Reminder - tomorrow is "Weekly Check-In" for those of you participating.

Lanette - I am retiring with nearly 37 years of service, there's nothing for me to buy! The deferred comp deposit is to take some of the immediate sting out of taxes. I only signed up a few months ago so I could do that. Since OPERS has a decent pension plan we didn't take extra out of that and DH took max out for his 401k. When he stopped working in the late 90s we needed my check to live on.
Deposited stuff at new place this am. Put some of it away. Came home and sorted a bit more. Working on a project that I need to update-should have that done tonight or tomorrow. More sorting and organizing of office files.
Off to the races! I will make!
Take care all,

WOW! That would not fly here.
Maybe that's why the third largest group of people born in another country and now living in Australia are those from China.
Australia has a much more relaxed approach to work ... much more emphasis on work-life balance.
I wouldn't want to work under the conditions your husband is but is it possible for him to do contract work or to teach IT or something with fewer hours and more choice? Draw retirement pay but dabble in work as well to supplement the retirement pay?

Congratulations to the England Women's Lions.
Terri: Belated Happy Anniversary. Have you written many love poems to your DH?
Ange: Where are you in CO? I live about 10 mins from Red Rocks ampitheatre.
Annie: My DH's social worker introduced me to the term "Compassionate Lie". You're right that it does take creativity to keep up with their ever-changing thoughts and ideas. The more you can begin to see the world from their eyes, the easier it becomes. Hugs and energy to you. 💜
Margaret: Ditto what others have said about how radiant and happy you look in that photo.
Lisa: Love the granny square purse. Hope your young helper is a keeper. I used to feel guilty all the time when Reuben would be doing the renovations in my condo. But he told me he likes working here. I'd let him chose the music, and provide lunch and coca-cola, his beverage of choice.
Pip: I like the name Ethel.
Machka: N is a gray nomad for 3-4 months of the year. It was the retirement dream for him and his late wife. If I didn't have my cat, there is a good probability I would join him more often for road trips in his Happy Hippie Van. I'll be joining him on Wednesday. Can't wait!
On saving and budgets, not my strong suit. Despite that, have managed to earn enough money passively and actively to have more than enough for eating out, treating others, taking trips and my self-care massages, adjustments and StretchLab. I get all kinds of cash back from my primary credit card, mileage from an airline credit card and Walmart cash from online grocery purchases. And I have a tenant who rents my guest room and bath. That more than covers high speed internet and a basic cable package. My part-time job is fun and flexible, so that helps alot, too. If you download the Upside app, you can earn cash just for buying gas. I got $100+ my first year.
DH retired in his mid-50s because the rigors of building boats (especially the exposure to toxic fumes) was getting to him. We managed despite the high cost of living in Honolulu. I retired at 62 when it became apparent he could not manage at home alone and I had a job that required travel. Caregiver was the hardest job I've ever had, but no regrets. In fact, quite the honor. And we saved how many thousands of dollars by not hiring home health aides or moving him to a nursing home. I wouldn't change any of that.
Okay, time to rest my eyes. Stay well friends. We can do this.
