@SparkSpringtime69, I’m thinking that maybe MissMay may not have been comfortable enough in the environment to create a group. But I could be wrong
My initial concern was that people would have to join to view and read, but by keeping it public, anyone can view, read, they only need to join if they wish to actively post.
I do want people to be able to visit, see our dialogue and then decide if they want to participate in the group.
I don’t think you have to join to see who’s is the group. You only need to join to post comments. @LittleSurferGirl74 -
@SparkSpringtime69 I personally like it being a discussion because that way anyone just scrolling through the discussions can chime in at any time and they may have some useful information. Some may not want to join a group. I believe that's why MissMay continued it that way.
@itladyee I was typing while you posted. I still don't see the reason to make it a group. I guess most of the groups that I checked out were private because I was unable to see the members or posts without joining.
Even if I could read the posts before joining, I probably would not join the group just to post a simple idea or experience. Just my two cents!

Oh, also, I'm not sure if this helps at all. But, I believe that someone posted that this discussion used to be in the challenges category. But, it was later changed to discussions, so people wouldn't feel like they were competing against one another. But, were here to give each other support.

I would be open to changing the discussion to a group @itladyee….
I also look forward to other opinions from our long term LA friends as well! I think it’s important to hear from most everyone so
maybe give it a couple more days to get new feedback and decide before 8/1?
This loyal group of less alcohol friends has been together for years and years now, and think it’s a good idea to go with a majority ‘vote.’Thanks for your continued contributions as the Admin here!

…..
I do like hearing it’s still kept in public view so anyone can read in advance and decide if they want to join and participate.
I imagine a group could even provide a greater sense of commitment for those abstaining or moderating as it is different than a general discussion.
Thanks for opening up the dialog.4 -
@Fursian how did you get the gray bars to the left of the text you wanted to quote. It's been really frustrating me that I can't separate out a few sentences or a paragraph that I want to respond to without quoting a much longer post. Thanks for any help.

it’s so close to the end of the month, here’s what I’ll do. I’ll set up August as we have been, then I will develop a group trial.
we can all give it a test drive and then decide as a group if it’s the way to go.Will that work?

Sounds like a good plan going forward into August @itladyee - have a good weekend!

@itladyee I think an open group is an interesting idea. Having all the information and resources in one place for everyone and being able to look back through past monthly threads sounds like it could be a quality of life addition. A disadvantage maybe, would be that the nature of groups is very ‘out of sight out of mind’, with the real potential of dividing (some people thrive in groups, some not so much), but promoting the group each month in this sub-category like other groups do could make this less of an issue.
A plus point having the LA threads as an open discussion here in the forums is the visibility, I see them as more accessible to those old and new. I don’t see any harm in testing things out, though.
If I may make a suggestion, I see the benefits of each. If it wouldn’t be too much up-keep (I’d quite understand if it was), having this thread AND an open group could be the best of both worlds. I can visualize there being a handy link back to the LA group within each new month’s opening post. The opening posts could give a nod to all the useful information and resources for those interested in learning more (I know I was), which could offer a solution to streamlining the LA threads. I like your idea of the mini challenges as well, and could see the potential with them for people.
@SparkSpringtime69 For now until the new format starts to make sense to me, I am just highlighting the bits of people’s posts that I want to quote and then copy/pasting into the ‘Leave a Comment’ box and then clicking on the Element Toolbar symbol that’s located to the left of the reply box, this opens up four menus, with the third one (Toggle Special Formats Menu) being where the quote function is. Selecting the quote symbol should place the grey bars. I’ve not figured out how to put the person’s username along with their quote like how we could with the old quoting function, I feel like I am missing something obvious, lol. I am using the website version of MFP.

MIL will be home tomorrow, or so they say. But, she has been diagnosed with respiratory failure. They are saying she cannot miss dialysis ever! Which she had missed on Monday before she went to the ER on Tuesday because she was sick with diarrhea. So, I guess she’s going to dialysis no matter what no excuses.
Spent the day with my bestie and we didn’t drink. We had a discussion about it though, and I don’t this she or her husband really knew my struggle. So, we’ll see how it effects things. I’m at a 15 day AF streak right now.
@itladyee I’m game for the test run to see what works best for all but especially you as the new “admin” of our discussion thread.

A couple of great social days.. Ball park yesterday, we cooked/tailgated burgers. Split a bottle of Korbel with my husband. Once through the gates had a glass of Pino Noir. Game was great. White Sox won against the city rival, Cubs.
Today had my son and family over. Made carnitas inside as the weather was iffy. But it cleared up and we sat on the patio. My grandson taught me how to make smores! Sat and chatted with my son for 3+ hours. It was awesome! I love him so much and I’m proud of how he is supporting and enjoying his family. They left about 6. I cleaned up, inside and out and just sat down with a glass of Cabernet and then I will be turning in.
Tomorrow is yet another busy day!

thank you for your insight:

thanks for the quote tip too.
out of site, out of mind, so yes, promoting could be important.
I see the benefits of each. If it wouldn’t be too much up-keep (I’d quite understand if it was), having this thread AND an open group could be the best of both worlds. I like your idea of the mini challenges as well, and could see the potential with them for people.if we kept the discuss thread alive, with intro but then redirected to group,,,best of both worlds and easy to maintain. I wouldn’t want discussions going on in both as we’d lose continuity!
I still gotta play with that quote thing 🤣
Thanks all for your feedback, keep it coming!!!

@Walela617 ~ Way to go Carol! Excellent job.
@NonnieDoiron ~ Wow, that’s pretty heavy re your MIL. Did she skip often, or is this just general reinforcement? I hope all works out for her and you! 15 days… Excellent streak….and month as a whole AND with everything you have going on! Way to show ME how it’s done!
@nbruns83 ~ yep, you almost have to double check your post, they don’t always register. Thanks for sharing your experience re your mother. I can’t even imagine how dementia can be so devastating.
@LittleSurferGirl7 ~ wishing you success as you approach your Day 1! You got this! Thanks for sharing you experience in caring for your Mom. So tough.
@Michieb125 ~ Did you get your hikes in? It’s been really hot and I have not gotten out the door early to walk. Monday for sure! But after these last few days, I may just want to rest!
@Womona ~ thank you for the patio link, made me laugh! I wish I could share with all of you! @chicbuc ~ I see you, girl!!! Awesomeness!
I changed the name of the spreadsheet to LA Tracker 2025, the original link should still work.

@Fursian thank you for the quoting info, worked perfectly.
@NonnieDoiron so sorry to hear about all of the issues your MIL is suffering with, and the stress it's putting on you and your husband. WTG on the 15 day streak despite it all!
@itladyee thank you for setting up the August thread, I really appreciate the time and effort you're putting into this group of folks!
@Walela617 Congrats on the one week medal!

Sunday reflection:
For two weeks in a row I reached my personal targets which I couldn’t say for May or June. I’m in another 30-day personal challenge (started mid July) which overlaps with this monthly thread. I’m motivated to end this month on a high note!
We are having a very cool summer here in CA. So happy with my 3-mile walk/hike yesterday! I listened to a couple of mindful podcasts and before you know it I had logged 7,500 steps ending my day at 11,000 steps.I’m committing to increasing my exercise outdoors this week for all the benefits of sunlight and fresh air. Especially since the temps are very mild.
But I know a lot of you are having record high heat - may it soon pass!5 -
Congratulations on reaching your targets this month! You should feel very proud.
BTW - Any way you can send some of that 'cool summer' to SC, we're in an extreme heat warning today, with temps in the high 90's and a heat index putting us at 110.
We've been dealing with this for a couple of weeks now, almost every day. ☀️🔥

I’m dying!
That is the current weather in my part of SC. @SparkSpringtime69 I’m sure wherever you are in SC, you’re feeling the same thing! It’s like the devil decided to visit the south! UGH!
I decided today to buy wine to add to my gravy (spaghetti sauce). I bought a Chianti which isn’t my usual wine, but I love it as well. I used about half the bottle in the gravy, so I planned to enjoy the rest tonight with and after dinner. We’ll see if I decide one glass is enough or not.
I also decided to play around with puff pastry and made some goodies. One is stuffed with cream cheese, Parmesan, and everything bagel seasoning, and the other is strawberry cheesecake. As you can see, the husband and I already sampled the everything bagel ones… so good! I also put a vanilla glaze on the strawberry cheesecake ones (not pictured). I’m excited to try them tonight.
MIL is home, and the plan is that dialysis will focus more on drawing fluid off her. They did two rounds of dialysis while she was in the hospital and pulled 7 liters! She doesn’t normally miss dialysis, only when she’s not feeling well. But, apparently, that isn’t an option anymore. Missing a day can put her in the hospital now.

@NonnieDoiron Those pastries look delicious!!
We're currently 95, feels like 109, so yeah, he**ishly hot…

@NonnieDoiron OMG…those pastries look awesome, recipes please…… yummmm

Here we go!!! I’ve put together my vision of what a group would look like for Less Alcohol.
The only thing that would need to be done each month (and can be done in advance) is to create the new month in discussions.
We can enhance the announcements over time with content from prior and future months.
Take a look around. I have created an area for you to post feedback in the group. Please post there, not here….
I have also added a few posts for new people who may stumble upon the group while we are in deciding mode as it is a public group.
There are a couple of announcements that will be deleted if we decide to move forward with this format.
It’s about 80% complete but I wanted to get feed back now, before I start to fine tune.
Feel free to post under July for testing purposes….
Here's the link: aka Test drive!

@itladyee I know you're going through a lot of work to change this discussion. And, we all appreciate it. But, why are you so intent on turning this into a "Group"?
I know this is a work in progress. But, under "Announcements", there is a section for feedback from existing members. But, there is no way to post.
The most important things for me…the benefits from cutting back or quitting alcohol have been moved to the very end. And, you purposely have to click on it to see them. One thing that was never put in that section, but should be, is that alcohol is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Why would you try to hide all of the risks of drinking alcohol and the benefits of cutting down or quitting drinking alcohol from people who are considering drinking less alcohol?
Anyways, I'm a no on the change. I've only been in this discussion for a year or so. But, it has been going on since, I believe 2017? I'll most likely stop participating.
What I've always said is, "If it ain't broke…don't fix it!"
Sorry for the candor!

I did finish the bottle of wine I bought for cooking last night, but I planned on it. It was only 2 glasses, but the way I poured it made it appear to be 3. I didn’t mean to pour a half glass on the first one (menopause brain fog kicked in); but I did which ended up being a half glass, full glass, and half glass. It was weird, but it satisfied that 3rd glass desire. After I did that, I was satisfied. I wasn’t wishing I had more.
Count is now AF-23, A-4.
Today will be AF, and probably the rest of the week. My son gets his wisdom teeth removed Tuesday, so I’ve taken off work for the day to take care of him. It’s my 1st day off since being in this new role. I’m actually using PTO instead of comp time, so I don’t feel obligated to get in front of my computer at any point during the day. We’ll see what Wednesday looks like after a day off… this could deter me from using PTO in the future. I’m afraid to see how many emails pile up in one day.

I stated advantages to doing a group earlier when I first suggested the group concept, the main ones are:
**No more copying and pasting the intro each month— saved time! With the change made to MFP back in March, copying and pasting can be quite the pain to get things all organized and consistent, bullet and font size, etc. Possibly it’s just a me thing, but I like it when things are consistent and easy to read. I can literally set it and forget it….
**Resources and links are always available at the top via announcements. You don’t have to flip back to prior pages to find something. The information is always right there in announcements.
**Easier to look back at past months if we ever want to reflect or reference something. Easier to find something. You mentioned alcohol as a carcinogen…perfect example. I don’t remember when that was mentioned but 1) it was never added because it wasn't easy to go back and add to those first few pages and by the time the next month was created, it was forgotten. It can now be added in real time announcements. Do you recall when that was posted so I can gather all of the information in its entirety?
**Keeps everything contained and organized in one place.
But, under "Announcements", there is a section for feedback from existing members. But, there is no way to post. As stated in the intro, you have to join to post, otherwise it’s view only.
1)The most important things for me…the benefits from cutting back or quitting alcohol have been moved to the very end. 2)And, you purposely have to click on it to see them. 3)One thing that was never put in that section, but should be, is that alcohol is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. 4)Why would you try to hide all of the risks of drinking alcohol and the benefits of cutting down or quitting drinking alcohol from people who are considering drinking less alcohol?
1)The areas under the announcement are auto sorted by MFP. I can play around with it but may not be able to control how they are listed. It’s probably at the end because it was the first thing that I added. I may be able to “trick” the system for ordering reasons.
2) yes, you do have the click the announcement. vs scroll back pages to find.
3)Exactly, one of the reasons for the group. Easier to add new information and findings for people to find at a later time.
4) Not hiding anything.
I won’t be making the decision; it will be a group decision. If the majority does not like it, then nothing will change. It was just an idea that I wanted to explore.
You are correct, this discussion has been around since 2017 as noted in the intro. The intention isn’t to fix what isn’t broken, but to make the space more welcoming, functional, and easier to navigate for long-time members and new people as well as simple to maintain.
Appreciate the candor.
@NonnieDoiron , you are still doing very well!! Good luck with the wisdom teeth removal and good for you to step away from the computer!

I really like these discussion threads and I don't really know how groups work but I'll give it a go if that's what folks want 😊

@itladyee I don't understand why copying and pasting is so time consuming.
I had mentioned in another discussion (challenge) that every time that I copy and paste my stats from my Word document to the discussion that everything is double-spaced, whereas in my Word document they are not. I keep my stats on a Word document so I don't have to re-type everything each week.
Another member replied: "@LittleSurferGirl7 When you right click to paste , look for the option just under "paste" that says "paste as plain text". Use that and it will be single spaced. It will not take away any graphics, emoji's, bold, italics, size change or anything else you have used in the lines."
I was using "Control" + "V". Once I used "paste as plain text"…Viola! Everything was exactly how I had typed it on my Word document.
As far as the announcements and previous months posts being listed at the top of each page, it seems that would take up a lot of space. I like to go back several days at times to catch up with everyone. If all that info is at the top of every page…that's a lot of scrolling.
Also, I can't speak for others. But, when I first found this discussion, after the 2nd month or so, I never read the intro stuff again. I imagine a lot of the long-time members are like me.
Anyways, since I don't want to join the group just to post, I'll just reiterate here that I prefer discussions over groups.
But, as with everything…all good things come to an end. I guess it's time to move on!

Good luck with the wisdom teeth appointment for your son today @NonnieDoiron - I usually pour my wine similarly to your example from last night! Or in 3-4 oz pours. Feels like 3 but it IS Less :).
Thanks for sharing your vision to create an organized and functional thread for this dedicated Less Alcohol community @itladyee
