My nephew who is a marathon runner eats pasta. I have only been in a 5k myself.

I would think anything with easy burn carbs and potasium.

Of course..there's always a good chili...might give you some extra GAS at the end?

I do a big bowl of cereal (not super high fiber), easy on my tummy, doesn't weigh me down too much. Or some fresh fruit, a lean serving of protein and veggies as a normal dinner, sweet potato or rice for carbs.

PS If you aren't too lean and are doing anything under 10k, you really don't need to adjust your meals the night prior, just don't go super low carb. If your working up past 10k, I recommend a normal dinner and again a bowl of cereal before bed, it hasn't failed me yet. :)

You are going to get a lot of different answers, but I want to ask what distance race are you actually running?

If my race is only a 5k or 10k, I don't eat any differently than I normally would for pre-race dinner or breakfast. That's just another morning of exercise to me. And I completely agree with the prior poster that said you really don't need to adjust anything for these distance races.

Anything over a 10k is a different story though. For dinner, I like a good protein/carb balance and sushi hits the spot perfectly for me. It's not for everyone though. Otherwise it's lean protein like fish or chicken, a healthy carb and some veggies. For whatever reason, I don't like pasta as a pre-race meal...just too heavy.

For longer races, my favorite pre race breakfast is rolled oats with a bit of honey and fruit, usually a banana. I will be eating that prior to the Army 10 Miler on Sunday.

Whatever you do, try out your meal options BEFORE your actual race day. If you don't, it might come back to haunt you.
  • Was curious about all three. Right now I am only doing 5ks but will be bumping up my distances in the spring.
