This past week … (my done list)

    Walked 18 km
    Climbed 123 flights of stairs
    Cycled 16.5 km
Swam 1 hour over 2 evenings

    Worked 5 days this week
Went in early on 2 days and worked a bit late on 2 days
In addition to my usual mountain of work, I also sat on an interview panel with the work involved in that (reading CVs etc. etc.)

    Evening activities:
    - swimming 2 evenings
    - sudden dash to pick up a new home office chair which I had ordered to be ready via "Click & Collect"
    - bee zoom

I've put the first coat of paint on the top of our second beehive. Hopefully I can do the second coat tomorrow.

I've finished reading a book that's part of the Goodreads challenges.

And I've done a few things around the house.

But on a lot of the evenings this week (after I got home), I didn't do much. I just didn't feel like it. So much going on at work.

Lisa ~ Haley and Levi are so cute. Hope Haley has a good 5th grade year as that is the grade I taught for most of my teaching career!

Annie ~ Have you thought of buying your dad some protein shakes to replace some of the ice cream and cookies?

Michele ~ So glad you got to see your grandson! Sounds like he had a lot of fun with you.

Rita - In addition to reading that humongous protein recommendation for protein on that website, one post mentioned calcium intake. Greek yogurt comes out highly rated in the calcium department too.

Tracey - were you able to get the mechanic to check out your car?

Annie - love that you are such an avid reader - thanks for letting us know who some of your favorite authors are so I can put them on my list. Does your dad ever talk about driving anymore?

Michele - glad you got to see PJ. 😁

I'm not surprised someone took the canned items you put in the box for the soup kitchen at BK. Back when the "Free box" was still outside my dog groomer's, I'd always take a couple bags of shelf stable items from my pantry to set beside it when Rosie went for a clip every few months. The bags disappeared fast. Once I was putting the bags of food out while a gal was going through the clothing box. She saw the grocery items and asked if she could have them. I said sure. She said she recently gained custody of her 3 grandchildren - 2 were teenage boys - and was scrambling to keep them fed and clothed. 😥 Her daughter was in jail and she didn't say where their dad was.

Early morning shopping trip done, and back before sunrise. 😁 I'm going through my closet today and putting away summer things and will pull out a few more items for the Goodwill.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

Worked then went to WalMart for the turkey breast. I know I got it at one store but it’s such a common item, I figured they’d carry it. Nope! So I had to go to the other WalMart.

Church tonight so I might ask Jess to check on the turkey breast to be sure it’s at temperature and doesn’t bake too long so it doesn’t dry out. Update: came home from church and she was making a salad and the gravy.

Update on the bowling: seems the guy who was on Vince’s team last year has someone in his family who wants to bowl so it looks like Vince and me will be on the same team. Heaven help me!!! .lol

barbie– how I wish we could see PJ every few months! Alas, with school, he’ll be gone all day. The prices of the hotel on the weekends are astronomical. So it looks like one day in April when he has Spring Break and one day in August before school starts. About the kitten –at least I know that it’s at a rescue and won’t be put the death. And he’s so sweet and friendly, that I’m sure he’ll be adopted real soon (if he isn’t already)

Lisa– I thought you always referred to your SIL as “sperm donor”

One of the things I (believe it or not) miss is going shopping once/week and getting everything. Now I find that I need to go almost everyday. Ah well...this won’t last forever

Lanette– this isn’t a “free box”. There is an increase in guests during the summer at the soup kitchen (I’m thinking that part of that is because now children are coming and not in school), donations are down, and they’re gearing up for the backpack program so they ask for canned goods and snacks. The backpack program gives kids a lunch for the weekend. Well...like I said, the person who took them probably really needed them. Why they didn’t go to the soup kitchen and get them and other things is beyond me. I guess some people feel awkward going to a soup kitchen.

Going to put the turkey in the oven then probably take Ganon for a walk. Update: he didn't want to go and I absolutely refuse to drag him. I pulled and his collar came off so I'm not going to do that. He came to the back door so I went for the walk by myself.

Meat: I’m not a fan of red meat. Give me chicken, pork, fish (oh, yes). I won’t say that I don’t eat red meat, but I certainly would prefer not to. It’s probably been about 10 years since I’ve had a hamburger. So many red meats are high in fat and when I have them, my stomach says “I don’t think so…”

Allie– I’m so sorry about your friend.

I recognise a few of those authors, but I think I've only read 1 of those books … possibly 2.

Beth - That’s another reason I don’t want a payment, the insurance goes through the roof. My DH’s insurance is $2600 a year mine is $500 neither of us can do anything like courses to lower our costs because we have perfect driving records. He takes courses at work every year and we tried submitting them but it did nothing.

I changed my profile pic the other day too, I think I’ve only had two friend requests since then.

Debbie - I hope you have a nice visit with your Mom.

Machka - sometimes I want to run to the woods too. I think it’s one reason I’m so homesick. I’m just looking for peace.
    Happy Anniversary!

My mechanic responded last evening. He is going to look at the car on Monday free of charge.
I’m anxious to hear what he has to say. Yesterday the car worked fine.

Lisa - I’ll have to look at GoImagine, sorry I haven’t yet. I don’t shop on Etsy often, very made enough connections at markets to find most of what I’m looking for, but the odd time I do go on there there are so many Temu type things and ads I give up.
    I like the feathers.

Annie - the dietitians I have worked with in the homes are of the opinion that the residents have reached the age where they get to have what they want. We provide nutritious meals and 2 choices for every meal, but if they only want the dessert or stuff their family’s bring in we don’t argue.

I’ve threatened my whole family I will come back and haunt them if they try to give me healthy when I want junk if I’m ever in a home. I hope I never get there though.

Lanette - I would normally be putting away summer stuff next weekend, but we’re supposed to have a hot couple weeks coming up. We are looking forward to it, it was a wet cold summer more often than hot this year.

Kylia - that’s a nice stack of books. I’ve been using the little free library we have at work. A lot of families, neighbours and workers are using it. We have three library areas inside for the residents.
It’s a good way of trying new authors.

I am the meat and potatoes person in our house, Rodger would rather burgers, nachos, pasta, pizza, we do breakfast often for supper in the winter, not so much in the summer because I cook my bacon in the oven.

I’ll catch up with my last few days tomorrow.

Rori - How annoying those small injuries are. And you don't get any sympathy, unlike a plaster on your arm! You could try a knee brace just for the holiday. I haven't tried one, but, as a knee sufferer, I've thought about it. Amazon have them. You have to measure yourself. Short term is fine, I think. Have a great time! 🤩

Lisa - Wow, that 'feathering' is very accomplished. How did you get the effect? GORGEOUS grandkids. 😍

I eat everything, and thoroughly enjoy every mouthful. I don't count calories, or micros, or macros, or steps or anything involving numbers, and I don't weigh myself. I eat beautiful, healthy food that gives me joy, every day.

I'm off after breakfast for a walk to the sea.

    Sunday — 17th Anniversary

I put a second coat of paint on the top of the beehive.

If all goes well, we'll get a swarm this spring and have two hives of bees.

Then we went into Richmond, a very popular historical town in Tasmania … not too far from where we live. We treated ourselves to ice cream and fudge. 😋

    https://hobartandbeyond.com.au/blog/ultimate-guide-to-richmond-village-tasmania/

And when we got home, I went for a 25 km bicycle ride. 🚴‍♀️ My longest ride in a couple months. Spring is coming!!

We have just about finished setting my home office so I can work in there. Last week, we purchased an office chair which I'm hoping will be comfortable for 8+ hours a day. Today my husband ran the network cable so I can connect. And I've got enough space to work. We'll see what happens tomorrow when I work from home.

The other half of the home office is a stack of boxes and bags filled with stuff from when we moved. My goal is to go through at least one bag or box and do something with the stuff … put away where it goes, put into my category bins, or get rid of it.

Category bins? I've got 3 large bins and have designated a category to each - "technology", "art stuff", and "stuff to be filed". I find it easier to organise related items, so Step 1 is to make bins/piles of related items.

Food — because of my badly deviated septum (which I likely had my whole life and was only discovered in my 50s), I have a limited sense of smell and have had forever. Fortunately, it was surgically corrected in 2020, and a tiny bit of my sense of smell has returned but most is still missing. Most likely my brain doesn't know what to do with smells because it hasn't been trained.

However, interestingly, I have always been able to smell bad smells. I can walk into the fruit section of a grocery store and know that something in the place has gone mouldy, and in very short order, I can usually identify what it is just by walking up and down a few aisles. I buy mesh bags of mandarins but instead of trying to see if there's one mandarin in the bag that might be going off, I just give the bag a quick sniff and I can tell.

All this means that I eat by texture (don't like gristly or slimy food) or taste (not smell - just taste: salty, sweet, sour, bitter, umami). I don't crave much, but when I do, it's usually something salty or something sweet … just about anything in those categories will do. I think of chocolate as "bitter sweet" … a dark chocolate might be more bitter whereas a milk chocolate might be more sweet. Other foods fall into similar categories … salted cucumbers are "bitter salt", mandarin oranges are "sweet sour".

And it turns out I don't like most umami foods (meat, seafood, mushrooms, green tea … even all variations of tomato except fresh tomatoes).

Add to all that the fact that I have bad reactions to several foods. 🙄

The result is, I have a rather limited collection of food I like. So, because food in general has never been overly enjoyable, I tend to eat for fuel … because I have to eat … because I feel hungry.

Another take on the grandparent issue. One of the reasons France does not have such a high rate of grandparent care, is that it has very heavily subsidised childcare.

Heather- Great job! I love that for you.

Machka- Happy Anniversary to you and Rowan. I too organize better from categories.

Had fun last night, but too late! Only "won" one item, but high bidder on a couple more. All for a good cause, just dragging as it was midnight to bed. Was awaken early by cat paw on eye from headboard. Ouch! Luckily the lightweight one.

DH wants to head to car show. I should get a few things done.…

Day 4. I am getting better at not stockpiling magazines and papers to be read....a few months ago I tossed 3 yrs worth of papers and magazines. If I haven't read when next one arrives, then I don't need it. Readers digest and guidepost are the exceptions. I read as can, then pass to friends.

    Chores calling..

    Heathly thoughts!

    Good choices!

    Hugs for all!

    Morning, guys - Up early-ish,

Machka - Happy anniversary a bit late! Sounds like it was a pretty good day all the way around… Thanks for the comment on the feathers - the white one was the hardest to get the look I wanted to! The other feathers have similar layering, but are impossible to see with my phone camera, no matter the light. The human sight still is better than mechanical lenses for shade and shadow.

    image.png

Heather - Actually, the feathering was done with large, cheap, stiff brushes. Just a few dollars for a set of three at the art store. You just drag a small amount of paint up in the direction you want the feathers to run, with the brush very dry, and flick the edges upward. The usual art brushes are meant to carry a lot of paint, and that doesn't work for this.

The illusion Machka's talking about required four steps on four different days - first the sepia background, then the white paint, then gray to create the shadows, then a layer of the pearlescent paint in the same base color, which blurs the edges, making it look a bit three-dimensional.

The whole painting seems to glow in the sunshine, but like I said, it's hard to capture in a camera. It can be done more quickly. I've seen the instructors use hair dryer to get the paint dry in between layers. I'm too lazy for that!

More in a minute - need to get my meds taken and make some coffee for Corey, who's just woke up.

    Love,
    Lisa in AR

My mother's sense of smell, and therefore her ability to taste well, went at about 80 years old. I'm hoping mine doesn't go the same way! John's is still OK.

G is doing better, with carers coming in every morning. She is getting out and sounds more cheerful. Phew!

TV — I have been watching "Escape to the Country" where people are looking for homes in the countryside in the UK. The houses look like the ones in "Midsomer Murders" and have lots of character. They look wonderful until I realize that my ideal house is on one level with big rooms, at least two bathrooms, and whole house heating and air-conditioning.

Escape to the Country is our usual Friday evening viewing … unless there's a cycling event on.

It's also a filler occasionally at other times if there's an hour between other programs we might want to watch.

Books — In the past couple years, I've been doing the challenges on Goodreads. Unfortunately, finding the book choices in their challenges can be problematic way down here next door to the Antarctic. But between my local library and Libby, I have been able to find one or two books out of the 75-ish they post in each challenge. Those one or two are rarely my first choices (rarely in my top 10), but I have enjoyed several of them. Occasionally, when I can find several books in a challenge or can find my first or second choices out the 75-ish options, I have found authors I've enjoyed and I've gone on to read more of their books. It's been interesting!
