LESS Alcohol ~ September 2025 ~ One Day at a Time

Hi everyone,
Happy September! Yes, I'm calling a new "Do-Over". I've promised to remain accountable; so there it is. I had alcohol on both Friday and Saturday and therefore broke my latest AF streak. I have no choice but to accept and try again. I can't give up. I'm afraid about the blood pressure and pancreatic pain.
The first of the month is always a good choice to start, and September always feels like a new beginning for me; so... here I go again!
THIS time I lost my keys! Can't find them anywhere! Luckily, I have a spare set of housekeys, but I will need to replace my office keys. My only concern is if I left them in my door and someone might have taken them! The only item of value I own is my 32-inch, Samsung HD TV. That's it. It's still unsettling. I left a note by the mailboxes downstairs. No idea if I'll ever get them back. (Drunk people lose things!) My cat would hide; so she'd be okay. Even if they came in and said, "Give me all your money", or "We're going to the ATM", or "Give me your credit card" - they'd get nothing, because that's all I have. (Credit card maxed out, savings ~$50, checking $5.84 but will overdraw, once pending restaurant tabs clear (tips). Joke's on them, if they try it. (Plus, I fight back; so if they don't have a gun…)
On the plus side, my weight is down, but it might come back once I resume eating normally. We'll see...
I've got to get out together, and quickly.
I will keep checking in and will try to do better.
Best wishes for the week ahead!
💞Carole

Found my keys! They were at the last bar I visited on Friday! Lucky me! (Kinda) Will fill in details tomorrow.
09/01 and 09/02, 100% AF! (002 days)
I will wait and start posting milestones once 8 complete the first week.
'Bye for now - I'll try to check in at least once per day.

Checking in for sober September! So far so good. The last time I did a full 30 days was last December. The weekends are the hardest for me. My body and brain just feel better when I don't drink. I have a beach vacation next month that I'd like to lose a few more pounds and feel good before I go. I lost 20 pounds last year and I can feel it creeping back on again. Not today, Satan! 😂

September - Day 2/2 AF!!!
I'm feeling so much better without the daily A habit, so good to break the cycle. This is actually 3 days in a row for me (8/31 AF). I'm still dealing with the nagging urge to pour a drink while making dinner, but I am powering through (can't leave it up to motivation, not there yet).
Sleep is still a bit of an issue, it is taking a long time for me to fall asleep, and I'm getting up about 4 times during the night to P… I think my body is releasing retained fluids, inflammation, so I'm not mad about that, just a little tired. So not a lot of sleep, but the sleep I am getting is really wonderful.
I'm not hitting the snooze so much, giving me more time in the morning to get my walks in before work.
My FitBit showed a 58 resting heartrate this morning, usually I was up around 66-67 when drinking.
Heart rate variability (HRV), showed 31ms, I'm not really sure how this measurement works, I was averaging around 16-18, so this is a big improvement according to FitBit.
Our bodies are amazing at healing themselves, if we just take care of them, and let them do the job, and we just need to get out of the way!
I hope that you all are having a wonderful day!

Hi there! I'm here because I need to stay on track. I am stopping the 5 pm cocktail, and then a wine while fixing dinner, and then a wine during dinner . . . and then "might as well put a few more ounces in to relax after dinner." Oh my! Summer is the worst time for me because it's fun to sit on the deck with the cocktail and enjoy the weather in the Northwest. And then there are the friends coming to visit from far away. It becomes a habit so easily. It's very hard to keep the weight off when I drink alcohol. But Summer is over!! Both literally and metaphorically.
So far 2 AF days for September.
Hope to get through to the end of the month and take the win and be inspired to continue…

Got very frustrated and stressed last night and ended up drinking (and quite a bit). I am expecting to be AF tonight and will be working towards keeping the rest of September AF as well.

@looneycatblue You've taken some breaks here and there. But, I've changed my username. I used to be SurferGirl. I'm the one that grew up in West Covina…not too far from you.
It's great to see you having some success. Keep it up! Your words are inspiring!
Our bodies are amazing at healing themselves, if we just take care of them, and let them do the job, and we just need to get out of the way!
This is so true. Before I had knee replacement surgery, I had to go through the wringer…lab work, EKG, cardiologist appointment (something was off with my EKG), stress test, ultrasounds of both the arteries and veins on two separate days (to make sure I wasn't at risk of blood clots). The ultrasound technician told me that if something happened to one our veins that our bodies would just produce a new one. Quite amazing!
@Walela617 I'm glad you found your keys. Maybe you should stay out of the bars 🤔 My husband lost his keys a week or two after we bought our new car. And, he wasn't even drinking. He just found them a couple of days ago. He set them down on his workbench. We searched high and low. Thankfully, he found them. Those key fonts aren't cheap!
@Michieb125 I haven't been keeping up much lately. I know your husband just had knee surgery. I'm assuming it was knee replacement. I had mine replaced seven years ago. It's not super easy. But, after a while, you don't even know you had the surgery. Best wishes to your husband and yourself.
@SparkSpringtime69 Don't feel bad. I haven't had even one AF day this month. I'm still grieving from losing my beloved cat, Tinker. We did adopt two new ones. It was probably too soon for me. But, we've grown to love these two also. We didn't replace her, we just added to the family.
Anyways, I'm sorry that I haven't been keeping up with everybody. But, I do think of you all.
Have a great day everyone!

@SparkSpringtime69 ~ So I got in bed around 10pm last night and the thoughts started….so I tried, "I don't need to think about this right now"…I didn't give another thought a chance as I just kept repeating it until eventually I got tired of saying it and fell asleep.🤣 So mission accomplished! Took about 30 minutes. Sorry you had a frustrating and stressful night last night. Hope all is well. {{{hugs}}}
@NonnieDoiron ~ how did you do?
@Walela617 ~ glad you found your keys… I think I would have had door locks changed by now….just to feel safe. Glad you don't need to do that.
@pennyks88 ~ Welcome!
@looneycatblue ~ nice job on getting that resting heart rate down. I haven't completely wrapped my mind around what the HRV actual means either.
@StepWise123 ~ Welcome and your scenario fits me perfectly and that is what I am trying to break the cycle. And yes, I just built a patio with a firepit that screams…a glass of wine to relax…but I'm working on self-control.
Speaking of self-control, my DH sent me a message about going out to dinner tonight since I'm working and will get my nails done, it will be late when I get home (to cook). The good news, he messaged me early so I can readjust calorie plans for today…. I will play it by ear and see how I feel. I did well last night but two in a row….🤞

@WestCoastGirl_7 It's nice to see that you are still here. I am very sorry about your kitty… I am a big cat lover, and it is always so hard when you lose one.
We recently rescued (literally rescued from a tree), a young female. We saw a notice through Ring, the poster said that there was a cat stuck up in a tree, they tried everything including calling the police and fire depts, no luck. My husband is tall, 6'3", and also a cat lover, so it didn't take much for me to convince him to go over and see if we could do anything to help, the tree in the park was only a 5 minute walk from us. Nobody was there when we arrived, except the cat. The tree wasn't very tall, and he was able to coax her down, put his arms around her, and we walked her back to our home. She didn't even try to scratch, bite or struggle at all. we put her in a spare room, and within 1/2 hour she gave birth to one baby! We are guessing that she gave birth to some earlier, and then was frightened up the tree by a coyote (we have many in our area).
She was very hungry and ate 4 cans of food within about 12 hours! Took her & the baby to the Vet the next day to get checked out, and scanned for any ID, nothing. She and the baby were fine, just some flees to deal with. This was 2.5 weeks ago. We have 3 other cats, and are keeping them separated for now. She is a sweet loving thing, doesn't act like a feral cat, we think maybe someone dumped her when they realized she was pregnant. The baby is a screamer!
Okay, back to work for me!

@itladyee glad your chosen method worked. I decided to stay up until 9:30 last night sitting in the dark doom scrolling again. At 9:30, I crawled into bed and was not tired at all. I started with the breathing, and it didn’t do much except make me yawn. So, I tried the alphabet thing, got through it backwards once, got through it forwards once, then tried to be deliberate about staying on a specific topic in my word choices and fell asleep trying to think of a sweet food other than a grape that started with G. Lol

I tried the alphabet thing too last night! It seemed to help a little bit.
I think the hardest part for me when I go AF is looking around at all the things I ignored and let pile up in the house while I was drinking. I cleaned up the kitchen and bathrooms last night and I'm feeling better this morning. I was just straight up mad at myself last night, but I breathed through it and let it go. Keep trucking along!

I’m back after a long weekend in the boat. The good news is I didn’t drink while sailing, which is a huge accomplishment. The bad news is that one day we had guests, and I had four drinks. Shocker, my weight is up and now begins the reset. Weekends are still a struggle because it’s relaxing time!
For August, I had 10 AF days, which is more than I’d had in quite a while. Having a goal really helped me.
So far for Sept., I’ve had only one AF day. I’m not trying to go AF but my goal is 3-4 days AF and cut back on weekends. The weekends are killing my efforts all week and it needs to stop.
I started up my tennis drills again this week. That first one -oh Lordy! I am not in tennis shape at all! I was winded and exhausted. And hungry!Hope everyone has a great day, and a successful reset for September. I think we’re all in the same boat!

We did go to dinner and I chose shrimp tacos for the meal…lightest thing I could find except for maybe a salad. No wine (@NonnieDoiron~ I think you might be on to something here), instead I had a Cosmo. Scale still went down and feel fine today.
@Womona ~ have fun with the tennis drills, I don't think my knees would handle the side to side any longer! Good job not drinking while sailing. I agree with the weekends, especially now that Football is starting. There's plenty of September left!
Nice streak @pennyks88

@itladyee When is the regular season of the NFL starting? I've looked at NFL.com, but things have changed?
1 -
@looneycatblue I read your post last night. But, of course, it made my cry. We still miss our little Tinker so much! We knew that we would adopt new kitties. But, I was planning on waiting a couple of months. We happened to go to the shelter and my husband took our girl out of her cage and was holding her. Our boy started screaming in a cage across the room. He was actually meowing, but it was more of a squeak. I took him out and held him. He immediately stopped squeaking. I looked at my husband and said, "Well, I guess we have to take both of them!". They adjusted really quickly. They ran around checking everything out for about an hour and then decided they were home. Anyways, we still think Tinker is here and looking after all of us.
And, you and your husband were wonderful rescuing that kitty and unborn child.
I've posted some pictures of Tinker before, but I hope no one will mind if I post them again. I love her so much!
Thank you so much for your thoughts!
Have a great day everyone!

@itladyee I meant to say thank you for opening the Less Alcohol thread for September - and I like your restyle of the LA opener. Very nice!
I should say my sleep has improved significantly only since retirement. There is definitely a huge difference between having a full-time career in workforce process improvement (managing employee and corporate initiatives) vs. doing life on my own terms. But I do recall those awful intrusive thoughts. Hope many of you find your way to peaceful rest.
New habits are being formed with 4/5 days N.A. DH is improving more and more each day - walking regularly now. This means my outlook is so much better too.
Decided to try a new red wine last night. Going on a 3 mile walk soon, and have yoga at 5:00.3 -
AF: 3/3 😁
@WestCoastGirl_7 I hope that your new kittens will help to fill in some of the gaps after losing your Tinker. {{{ HUGS }}}
We are calling the mama kitty, Kady, somewhat in remembrance of one of our kitties (KimKim) we lost 5 years ago, can't believe it has been that long.
@Michieb125 I have a few more years to go before I can retire… I really hope my sleep patterns improve soon! I was a total insomniac last night, got only about 3 hours of sleep in before having to get up for work this morning… I'm going to be dragging! Luckily for me, I didn't drink last night, or today would be a total doozy!
I had to get up about "6" times last night to P… started to worry that I had a female issue, but luckily no other symptoms. I Googled about this, and seems sort of normal when stopping the "A". I hope my body settles down soon.

@WestCoastGirl_7 ~ of course we don't mind you posting pictures of Tinker again. I would love to see the new kitties though! NFL season starts tonight!
7:20pm CDT
@looneycatblue ~ yikes 6 times! If I'm drinking my water at the recommendation of 100 ounces, then I'm up quite a bit too… but I can't take that many interruptions in my sleep, it's bad enough, so I cut back to around 64 and try to stop by 7pm. I'm still guaranteed at least 2 visits!!!
@Michieb125 ~ I got my 3-mile walk in today…and added a 5-minute cooldown. I never "officially" cooldown. The weather was great 60 degrees. I took a different path that had a bit more incline to it…good news the incline was in the beginning so the return was easier! But 3 miles and yoga!!! 😲

AF-4Went for a walk on Tuesday and today, only doing 1 lap each time which is a little over a mile. I also pick up the litter. I have to build up to additional laps simply to avoid shin splints. I always get them when I don’t ease into it after an extended break. Next week, I’ll do more.
It was funny, I told a coworker yesterday about my weightloss goals. We had two meetings back to back, then I called to ask her a question. Before we hung up she asked, “you’re going on your walk now, right!?” 🥰 I just adored her making sure I was going. She’s such a great person. I love working with her.
Brats for dinner. No desire to drink. Really just want to take a shower and go to bed.

@itladyee congrats on your walking too! The cooling down part sometimes doesn’t happen but I just think about all the outstanding health benefits of walking, especially for longevity.
Yes, I incorporated a new habit on 8/31 and committed to a 30-min yoga session each day for 30 days at 5:00 (healthy happy hour) in my yoga/relaxation room/grandkids playroom lol. I find it to be a powerful stress buster for me—so far so good.4 -
@itladyee I don't know what happened with NFL.com. But there used to be a drop-down menu showing preseason, regular season by weeks. But, then again, I'm about as blind as a bat these days. I did see that the Seattle Seahawks (my team) plays SF 49'ers on Sunday at 1:05. That will be interesting!
The new kitties aren't quite as photogenic as Tinker. But I will post a couple. I have a couple of videos, but I'm not sure how it works on MFP. I had to send the videos to my brother via Google photos.
The first day we brought them home. Rascal is the boy (on the left). I believe he is basically a tuxedo. But he only has the white markings on his belly. Muffin is the girl. She doesn't look very pretty right now. But I think she will be pretty when her hair grows out.
They aren't litter mates. But they bonded with each other and us immediately.
Have a nice day everyone!

Remembering my sister, Era!
Two years ago today that she left this earth.
It was bittersweet as she had suffered so much and she was not the sister that I recalled and have fond memories.
First…we were 12.5 years difference in age… so that alone was a challenge. When I was born, she was already a teenager heading into highschool. I recall stories of her babysitting me and I managed to get a jar a vaseline and covered myself in it. She was beside herself trying to explain to our parents. I recall being a bully…she was in her early 20’s and I tried to pick a fight with her…she wouldn’t. Then I was away at college and she sent me care packages quite often and they mostly included underwear ??? To this day, I have a TON of underwear!
There were family events, mostly good , but also family disagreements when my Mom was ill, and generally just life…..
A bigger bond occurred in 2005 when I joined her hobby of going to sweepstakes conventions. So once a year we got to travel together to a nice place and spend 4 days, if we were lucky, winning… It was a good time.
Then more life happened and she had a stroke in 2015 and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020 (I think, detail are fuzzy now)…
Life was tough after she had the stroke, her kids weren’t there for her and her husband shunned everyone else who wanted to be there for her.
He called me weekly and ranted….it was horrible…But that’s not what I chose to remember…. I chose to remember the goodtimes.
10 -
@itladyee So sorry for your loss. It's hard on days like this. Just do remember the good times. Very lovely pictures.

@WestCoastGirl_7 Thank you for sharing the kitties. ❤️That second picture reminded me of a cat and a rabbit we used to have that bonded. My younger sisters had a children’s pram (push chair/stroller) at the time that they (the cat and the rabbit) would snuggle up in together. One of the cutest things I’ve ever witnessed.
@itladyee I’m sorry to read about your sister. It is heartbreaking to read that her children were not there for her and her husband contributed to that. 😔
It is good that you’re remembering the good things, thank you for sharing and for the photos of those good times!3 -

@NonnieDoiron nice job getting your walks in.

@WestCoastGirl_7 ~ Thanks for sharing the new kitties. Love the last cuddling picture.
Thank you all for the kind words re my sister: @WestCoastGirl_7 @SparkSpringtime69 @Fursian
@Michieb125 ~ I love healthy happy hour! Smart!
@NonnieDoiron ~ nothing better than having someone support you and your goals!
I think I need a little retail therapy~ 🤑 🛍️
