Yeah for staying on plan @username301 .
Sounds like another decent run @John772016 . Sometimes you just have to decide what works for you day by day.

Posting 3 days today.
Monday we had to take my mom's cat to the vet. He isn't putting weight on one of his front legs. They did x-rays and said no break or wound, but some arthritis, so that is what they are treating him for. He still isn't putting any weight on it. Anyway, the procedure at our vet, if you don't have an appointment, is to drop them off in the morning and they work them in, then you come back and get them when they are done. So, it turns into an all day affair with two trips to town. I didn't get out and do my exercise until I got him home at about 5:30 pm. No energy for a run, so walked 1.25 miles.
Yesterday, I actually got a good night's sleep…Garmin gave me a score of 85. I usually feel that I handle poor sleep pretty well, but boy did I feel so much better than usual yesterday. I was very productive with checking things off of my list and then went out for a wun.
The "running" portion was a walk/run for 1/1 min, even up all the hills. Pace wasn't fantastic, but I feel like I got a good workout. I ended the 3.10 miles at mom's, talked a while, and then walked home. Avg pace was 13:12 min/mile. Avg HR was 139 with a max of 163 bpm.
Today, mom and I went to town early so I could get a haircut, then went to the noon Bible study. After I got home, I did a driveway walk - not wanting to sweat too much since we were going to Bible study (at mom's old church) tonight.

@yirara I think you should go for the 10K badge. It is ok if you walk some of it.
@quilteryoyo I do remember Pepe le'Pew. I thought of that too.
1 -
@yirara Thanks for the pictures. Where is the arch?
@tarun_yadavA Palm Springs is desert glam! There was great company. Exotic delicious homemade Sri Lankan cuisine. The house was perhaps the most opulent place I've ever stayed. Now I am home and enflamed with COVID. It has had a large recurrence here in California and I got it. Second time...the first time I had it was in 2022.
You gotta pay to play.
I'll recover a bit more and then soon I'll try and lace up my shoes and get out the door
6 -
Oh @chris_in_cal sounds like a great vacation and the normal post vac covid attack. Hope you are better soon.
@quilteryoyo when my cat injured her leg we got some gapipentin for her and that seemed to help a lot. Hope they gave your mom's cat some pain killers. They also have some monthly arthritis injections now for older cats which can be helpful.
Up to 45 miles running for the month. The weather has started to get a lot better for running and I have been trying to ramp up a lot slower than the past efforts so working on avoiding more injuries. LOL.
@kgirlhart the skunks have been out here too and a couple mornings I could not decide if it was a bright shiny MOON run or a SKUNK stinky run. I haven't seen them but I have definitely proof they were around. Pepe….
Scott hope that calf eases up soon!
3 -
Sorry to hear you are sick @chris_in_cal . I hope you recover quickly.
Great running @SummerSkier . Mom found an open wound on her cat's leg last night, so back to the vet today. I know it wasn't showing Monday, but still wonder how they missed it.
3 -
Happy running all.
I remember Pepe le'Pew! Yesterday was a lot less hazy and cooler than previous days. Did a middly ambling run yesterday late afternoon but felt great.
@quilteryoyo awesome sleep score! hope kitty gets well soon @chris_in_cal sorry to hear about the covid! I've had it 4 times. ugh.
3 -
Aww @chris_in_cal sorry your prize for your weekend was COVID! Hope it is a mild case.
Did a test run on the TM this morning for my calf. Logged 3 miles, but actually did 4 miles (forgot to restart watch after bathroom break). Calf felt ok, no real 'pain', just a little tight.
5 -
Nice runs & walks @quilteryoyo, @SummerSkier, @WarmJellyfish, & @Scott6255(glad the calf is cooperating)!
Sorry to hear about the Covid @chris_in_cal! Hopefully you have a mild time with it!
You're allowed to vacation with paying a penalty for it, lol!Sept:

Beautiful day today. Did my usual physio exercises & my pre-run stretching and headed out the door planning a longer run. As I was heading down the stairs noticed my leg nerve pain was actually getting worse; normally after my exercises & stretches it's noticeable but not too bad.
Decided I'd walk a bit to loosen up & start off my run further west of me but when I got to that point, that wasn't good enough, so kept walking & then decided to sidetrack onto a park path to walk some more. I ended up sitting down on a park bench and deep massaging my left thigh & calf for 20 mins+ until I felt it was feeling better & that I could walk/ run on it comfortably.
Walked for a bit more than decided I'd try a shorter run today instead of my original plan.
No issues with it on my run, just kind of 'there' (Though Garmin decided to stop recording for some reason! Not sure exactly how much it missed but I think I had only gone about 1/4 mile before I noticed it had stopped and started up a new run on it).
Had to go pick up a race kit for one my races this weekend, so I decided to ride the subway a bit further south than my exit & walk my way north (& uphill) & then continue walking part of the way back home. Noticeable pain but not too bad to deal with, hopefully a weird outlier.4 -
maybe an abcess opened up @quilteryoyo altho seems the vets would have noticed it seeing how painful it probably,y should have been on palpation.
1 -
@WarmJellyfish I just loved Pepe le-Pew! Glad your run felt good. That sleep score is a rarity for me. It was 60 last night.
That's good news @Scott6255 .
@John772016 I'm sorry you were having trouble with nerve pain today. You did good to tough it out and get in plenty of exercise, it sounds like. Which race is this weekend?
@SummerSkier Yes. The abscess opened up. Mom and I aren't really happy that they didn't find it Monday - we have a feeling that they didn't feel the leg, just x-rayed it. We may switch vets.

Did a driveway/road wun this morning. It was great weather, 63F (17C) to begin with and 72F (22C) when I got back home. I did the run/walk at 1/1 min again, for the first 2 miles or so, and then just ran what I felt like. My thighs were burning on the uphill running portions today, for some reason, and I had to stop and stretch out a minor cramp in my left calf. But, otherwise, it was a pretty good run. I really hadn't planned on going that far since I was playing tennis tonight, but I just kept going. I stopped at moms and talked to her a bit and then did my cool down walk home.
Avg pace for the run was 13:09 min/mile. Avg HR was 133 with a max of 153 bpm.
Tennis tonight was fun and I did okay. There were six of us, so we played some doubles and some single, switching out partners.
Cat woes in the spoiler.
As I stated previously, we had to take mom's cat back to the vet this morning, drop off, and pick him back up when they finished. They didn't call until 45 min before they closed, so we made it back to get him exactly one minute before they closed.
Anyway, they said it looked like he had gotten bitten by something. They shaved that part of his leg and cleaned it up and gave him anti-biotics to take. He still isn't putting any weight on it, but I think now that it has drained, that he should be okay.

It was another beautiful morning and I ran 6 miles. It was uneventful, but it was nice and I felt like I could run forever.
Sorry to hear about the covid @chris_in_cal. Hopefully it will be mild and you'll be feeling better soon.
@quilteryoyo I'm surprised the vet didn't catch that too. At least the kitty is on the mend.
@SummerSkier It is definitely skunk weather.
Glad your calf pain is getting better @Scott6255. Sorry to hear your nerve pain is still bothering you @John772016 .

Morning all
Got in 7.49M at 10'35.
@chris_in_cal glad you had a great time... Shame about the sickness afterwards

Did a trail stroll llast night. Still fed two bugs after being doused in deet. I think they are super hungry.

Today was meant to be 'can I go a little bit faster 5km'. Last week I know that I changed the treadmill pace a bit around during the run, but kept it steady this time.
Anyway, I must have spent a bit longer than I thought gathering pace, and a bit longer than I thought last week at the quicker pace.
As I finished, a glance at the timer showed me whole 1 sec faster than last week. No wonder it felt comfortable.

I was in a conference in a nearby city on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, I did strength training before the conference. Yesterday, it ended at 2:30 so I took a change of clothes with me and ran on the trails at a nearby park. The park is located next to where I used to work. When I first started the Couch to 5K program (11 years ago), a friend and I would go over there to do our walk/runs. Yesterday, however, I ran on trails that I didn't even know existed. As usual, I had no plan. I just turned left or right when I got to an intersection and it worked out although I was beginning to wonder where I was a couple of times. It was mostly just me and the squirrels although I ran into a couple walking their three very well behaved dogs and at the end of the run as I was coming back to the parking area the local hs cross-country team was out running.
@chris_in_cal Hope you are feeling better. I'm convinced that's what I had after returning from Florida last month even though I took two tests that both came back negative. Same symptoms as others who tested positive had so I have to wonder.
Good luck with your race this weekend @John772016 !
Hope kitty is better soon @quilteryoyo
Faster is faster @username301 even if it is only a second!

Beautiful nonetheless, straight off the coast where I grew up is an arch on Anacapa island.
Last year I vacationed in Baja California, Mexico and in Cabo San Lucas they have a beautiful arch.
Thank you for all the well wishes. I'm recovering and it seems to be much more mild than my first go round in 2022. I'm wondering how to start back, probably starting slowly is the way to go. I feel like going to do some light weightlifting, but that's in my public gym. Better, is to get out a do a longer walk. I'll give it some more time before I start going back into public places and maybe infecting other people.
5 -
I walked a loop around my neighborhood. It hilly. Here's my elevation graph. It feels good to move around.
5 -
Sounds like you had a wonderful run @kgirlhart . Poor Socks, mom's cat, still can't put weight on his foot and today, it looks like there is another abscess that they missed. Hopefully, it will open on their own.
@yirara Hope you enjoyed your hike today.
Nice running @tarun_yadavA .
I guess bugs have to eat too @WarmJellyfish . 🤣
One second IS a bit faster @username301 ! 😉
That sounds like a very nice run @Teresa502 and you got to reminisce about the major improvements you have made since you last ran there.
Beautiful pictures @chris_in_cal . I'm glad that you seem to have a mild case. Great walking today.

I wasn't planning to go into work today, but they needed me, so I worked from 11:30-4:30 in the 2 year old class. It was a little chaotic, with 11 kids today, but they left quickly after afternoon snack.
Anyway, I had to wait until after work for my exercise. I put dinner on to cook and then went out for a "recovery" wun. Wound up being very slow, so am counting it as a walk. I tried to keep my HR under 120 bpm and then 130 when I saw that wasn't going to work. It still got above that, but not horribly so. Avg pace was 15:11 min/mile. Avg HR was 123 with a max of 137 bpm.

Today's run was an interval run. Two miles to warm up, followed by 4×100 m and then 8x400 m at 5K pace and then half a mile to cool down. So 7 miles in all. It was a good run. It was a little warmer than the last couple of days, but not unbearable.

No running today. Had a lovely hike yesterday and today I wanted to do a short sightseeing trip, which turned into a 7-8hr affair with blisters on both heals and a pinky toe. Saw wonderful things though and had a great swim.

I had some things I needed to get done this morning, so it was after noon before I headed out the door. It was 79F (26C), so much warmer than earlier in the week. Today was a struggle. I had a hard time breathing and my legs just didn't want to cooperate, but I got it done.
I did a 0.35 mile warm up walk, 3.30 mile wun, and a 1.35 miles cool down walk - mostly walking home from mom's. I had to take a couple of breaks during the wun. One was in the only shade available - the shadow of a power pole. 😂
The average pace for the wun was 13:09 min/mile. Avg HR was 131 with a max of 153 bpm.

That's great! taking time off worked.

Sunday long run today - and the first real long run in a while. I joined a couple of friends and the MetroRun club crew to run the Coast to Coast route - from the waterfront in the CBD to the north of the city via a circuitous route to the waterfront on the south coast. Totalled 19+ kilometres and included two volcanoes to add some serious elevation (440 metres).
The weather was seriously windy - a very brisk cross/headwind the whole way to add an extra challenge.
Good to get it done.
Views north to the CBD from the top of Mt Eden:
Heading up (I won’t say run) One Tree Hill. Seriously steep but not too long:
A random piece of art in a park I’d never been to before. Looks like a fan from behind:

So I am joining @chris_in_cal this week I guess. I was feeling a little stuffy and my upper throat felt strange yesterday evening so I pulled out a C19 test and lo and behold… positive. 🥹 No fever yesterday or this morning but I think I will ease up on running for a few days because my HR is way too high. Which is strange but tells me my body is working to fight the virus. (it's about 20 beats higher just sitting than normal). Hopefully this is a quick course, but it is annoying and I might have exposed 1 person yesterday morning even tho I was not symptomatic. On the bright side my knee and foot will be grateful for a lot less mileage for a little while and more time to heal up. 🤪🤷♀️
5 -
Today was meant to be a 10km about 90secs faster than last week, but after feeling tired/lethargic this morning I felt pretty good on the treadmill, so upped the pace at halfway and added an extra 1km. So 11km from me (furthest for 5yrs) & (10km quickest for 5yrs).
A question, whilst I'm here though. I think I'm the only British person posting on this challenge, have I got that right/wrong?

Race this weekend was the Toronto Zoo 10K on Saturday @quilteryoyo & I also did the Terry Fox 5K Charity Race (I call it a 'race' because there's a bunch of us who are way too competitive, but it's really a non-timed fundraising fun run) on Sunday across Canada that I joined for the local one around my neighbourhood.
Info on the Terry Fox Charity Run in the spoiler for anyone that wants to avoid it.

Well, my September of 'worsts' apparently continues…, my worst 10K time on Saturday.
Woke with bad nerve pain so spent extra time exercising & stretching prior to leaving for the race. Spent another 20 minutes prior to the race massaging my left thigh & calf to try to work out the muscle tenseness. Had to stop & walk a bit just over 2km into the race. Realized pretty quickly that I was going to have some issues, so just decided to do what I needed to do and get on with it. Ended up with around 8 short walks through the 10K course. Even though I added some 7 mins onto my time compared to previous races, still finished with a decent finishing time placing me in the top 25% of the almost 2,000 runners.
I was actually upset with myself as I drove home.
Eventually the logical part of my brain took over and reminded me that just 6 years ago my neurosurgeon was worried if I would be able to walk.
I pictured his face as I complained about my poor time on a 10K Race that still had me finish in the top 25%.
I know his face wouldn't stop smiling, because….he'd be thrilled….'You're running?'The Terry Fox Run is a national run in Canada raising money for Cancer Research in honor of the young man who lost his leg to cancer and decided to try & raise money for Cancer Research by running a marathon a day across Canada.
It was his 'Marathon of Hope' on one leg & one poorly designed replacement.
He wanted to raise a $1 for every Canadian (at that time $24 Million).
He started in Atlantic Canada & made his way west. By the time he was getting to Ontario he was upset that he had raised very little money.
As he crossed the border to the province of Ontario, he got a police escort, and was greeted by thousands of people lining the streets he was running on.
Runners joined him along his route, running a marathon with him.
He unfortunately had to stop his run at Thunder Bay, Ontario, when after having breathing difficulties, it was discovered that his cancer had spread to his lungs. He had attempted to run a marathon a day, for 143 days; He had run 5,373 km / 3,339 miles.
He died 9 months later.
The following year, his family started a fundraising 5K run, which has grown each year encompassing thousands of neighbourhoods across Canada.
I've never been in a city in Canada where I couldn't sign up for a Terry Fox run/walk.
This year, it looks like that the fundraising has surpassed $1 Billion.
He tried for $24 Million.Money raised by his initiative led to research that have saved lives of my friends & family.
Last year, Terry Fox was voted in to replace Sir Wilfred Laurier (a former Prime Minister) on our $5 Bill as of 2027.
He is the youngest person ever to receive the 'Order of Canada'.

Well, here you go! Made it. Well, kind of anyway. I walked about 21 minutes of those 84. But it still means I ran for over an hour. Didn't go as good as previous runs, but I just didn't want to give up. And to celebrate this I dragged myself home, went to the fridge, pulled out a can of beer because bottle of coke is too big, took a big gulp, and threw up into the loo. Well, I guess it's vacation as well, no? 🙄 😏
