OCTOBER 2025 Monthly Running Challenge

OCTOBER 2025 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the SEPTEMBER 2025 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10945890/september-2025-monthly-running-challenge/p1?new=1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until OCTOBER 1, 2025 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
OPTIONAL TICKER******
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.
“I often hear someone say I’m not a real runner. We are all runners, some just run faster than others. I never met a fake runner.” – Bart Yasso
“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” – Confucius
"We all know that if you run, you are pretty much choosing a life of success because of it.” – Deena Kastor
“Most people run a race to see who is fastest. I run a race to see who has the most guts.” – Steve Prefontaine
“Get going … walk if you have to, but finish the damned race.” – Ron Hill
"If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how fast or how far. It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run." - John Bingham
You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃
'sleasy' - Slow and Easy
'sneasy' - Slow Not Easy
'scrappy' - mix of Slow and Crappy
'wun' - mix of Walking and Running
'wog' - mix of Walking and Jogging
"injury shuffle" 2x your normal pace, if you are crazy enough to do it
"Crazy Laps!" repetitive short distance laps (think living room/hospital room)
Difference between running and jogging. Joggers find dead bodies. Every news article will always print: 'jogger found dead body', 'out jogging, found a dead body.' Never does it say a 'runner' found a dead body. Only joggers find dead bodies.
'boyfriend run' - 12.1 mins per mile is the perfect 'run date' speed
'girlfriend run' - you better keep up, no matter what the speed
Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay on track. Don't look back!

150kms for October

I guess I'll stick with 80 miles of running/fast intentional walking until I get it right. LOL
This month my nemesis will be a tennis tournament the middle of the month. Those days will be minimal walking to keep the streak going. And, there's also an entire week of working, which makes it hard for me to run…unless I can talk myself into it during my break. We shall see.

Thank you @AlphaHowls for setting up October!
Not sure on mileage this month. Have a 15K race middle of October. So will probably be resting a bit before and after.
6 -
Thanks for setting up Jennifer! 🙌
I'm away again from the 18th (family trip this time, not solo or with friend)...
Probably will get a run or 3 in whilst away…
Will go for 115 miles
4 -
Aiming for 90 miles this month. Will be away on vacation the 23-28 and while planning to run, the tropical climate and staying at an all-inclusive resort may get the best of me!
4 -
110km over 18 runs. Any other targets, just decide on the day.
5 -
Thank again @AlphaHowls!
My gut says to target 161Km / 100 Miles but my PT stresses do less.
So, I'm going to target 125Km / 77.7 miles and hope I'll happily ignore the PT recommendation at some point during the month and do what I want.
I will also continue my cycling on a several days throughout the month to change it up for my legs.5 -
So, if you read what I wrote in September, you will understand that my mileage is going to be whatever I can do. I really want 300 miles, but depends on how my jaw heals.
6 -
Got in 4.0M at 08'25

@AlphaHowls dental stuff is the worst. And it also is SO expensive. Hoping that the pain has subsided somewhat with all the work and you are able to get your mileage in.
I did 110 mile of walking and running last month so I think I am going to stick with that as a stretch goal. I don't want to push anything while my RHR is still so elevated because there is no sense in trying to gain fitness when you are just struggling to get back to normal. dammit. However I do believe that part of getting back to normal HR will be mild exercise so I am here and keeping up!

Hi guys,
I'm hoping for 70 miles running for October, maybe a bit optimistic with the weather, Mum, and busy work month plus 5 day trip to Scotland mid month, I do plan to run in Scotland though. Planning 180 miles on bike and daily yoga.
0/10 3.22 miles run - 8.52 miles bike - 30 mins yoga
TOTAL RUN - 3.22 / 70 MILES
TOTAL BIKE - 8.52 / 180 MILES
TOTAL YOGA - 1 / 31 DAYS5 -
1 6.63 miles
On The Run! Get up! Get out there! Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!
8 -
My goal for October is simple - Just Run
9 -
Here we are @michiepickens @Kizzy_Ann @micukica @rennerkyler for the October Running Challenge.
It is the beautiful thing about this thread, like Groundhog's Day, last month's runs are a memory and we all get to start again fresh in the new month's challenge.
I hope to see you here for October.
4 -
Nice runs to start the month @tarun_yadavA, @Mari33a, & @AlphaHowls (& great sunrise pic)!
Oct:
01/10 - 6.55km / 4.07 miles
Total = 6.55km / 4.07 miles (Goal - 125Km / 77.7 miles)Didn't think I was going to run today as I woke with a bad headache & was busy with appointments throughout the morning.
As I was walking home…. it was just too damn nice out not to go for a run.
Threw on some shorts & Tee & headed out once I got home this afternoon.
It was an absolutely beautiful autumn day for a run.6 -
5km easy run, though I was full of processed, salty food, so it did not feel great & I spent the last km wondering if I had a stitch.
I would join in the beautiful photos, but you would just see a wall in front of the treadmill, maybe also a skirting board that could use a duster.
Going to do some weights tomorrow if I can be dragged put of bed early.
1 run = 5km.
5 -
Started Oct with a negative test! (well I am not sure but the line was so faint if it was there I couldn't actually see it) so I went for a short slow 2 mile run to celebrate. (A boyfriend pace run…)
I am still seeing increased resting and sleeping HR so the plan this month is to let my body recover while slowly ramping back up the fitness. Virus's are so insidious and I never really knew how MUCH recovery time we need until I could see the HR data.
I am wishing for some of that nice fall weather as it warmed up this week but the mornings are still a lot cooler.
5 -
Going to revise my Oct goal to 60km 🙄 was maybe a bit ambitious earlier.
4 -
Yay for the negative test @SummerSkier 😃
@AlphaHowls very sorry to hear about your jaw problems. That sounds painful 😖I got in a good 6M TM run after work.
11 MTD for October

October Goal: 165 miles
10/1: 6.02 miles
6.02/165 miles completed for October
I'm setting my goal for 165 miles again this month. I started the month out with a nice 6 mile run. It has been warm in the afternoons, but the mornings have been cool. Today's run was really good until I was about a block from home and I swallowed a bug. So I started coughing in that gagging way you do when an insect hits you in the back of the throat. And of course my neighbor was outside and saw me. At least I had water with me.
Glad you were negative @SummerSkier .
3 -
Oh duh, this is Oct. 1, so 6 MTD. I was counting Monday's 5, but that was still September. 🙄

Great start to the month @username301 .
Yeah for testing negative, finally @SummerSkier . I hope you fully recover quickly.
Great treadmill run @Scott6255 .

Greetings! Just dipping my toe into the waters, as it were, not with a goal in mind but for now just to record a baseline. I earned my letterman's jacket in high school by running cross country 5k's in the fall and as a track sprinter in the spring, then would run 5k's for fun and as a study break during college. After joining the military I assumed running would simply be a fact of life, but after basic training I ended up doing years of 24-hr shifts sitting in a cramped bunker deep underground, followed by years of desk duty while starting a family, so running (and fitness in general) took a back seat, and between schedule plus gaining 50 lbs causing my knees to hurt, running simply disappeared from my life.
Fast forward a couple decades to now, I have lost the weight, and just a couple months ago decided to try running for the first time in forever. It may never again take center stage in my fitness life (lifting is my primary exercise these days), but it felt great to stretch the legs once more, especially doing so pain free!
So, for the month of October, I will simply record the total number of miles under my feet, between running plus exercise-related walking. (Not counting grocery store trips, for example.) For clarity, I will use the following definitions:
Work - parking in the furthest spot, forcing me to talk further to the office
Incline - my primary cardio for the past year has been setting a treadmill to a steep incline at a walking pace
Jog - jogging on a treadmill (either warmup before lifting, or as a stand-alone workout)Oct 1: .25mi (work), 3.92mi (incline)
Oct 2: .25mi (work)Cumulative totals: Walking 4.42mi, Running 0.0mi

Good morning! Finally the best 3 months of the year!
1 Oct - 1.5 Miles/5 min JOG!/35 min lower body
2 Oct - RestGoal: (1.5) 20 Miles / (5) 45 Min Jog / (1) 13 Strength
Kept the goals mainly the same this month. Progressed my running goal from a 3 min jog x 2 with a 3 min rest in between to a 5 min jog.
Yesterday I felt pretty good. It was a weird day though, I felt like everywhere I looked, there was something I don't see often going on. I was glad I got to go to the gym. Since I work on base and the gyms are run by gov civilians, they were all furloughed so they locked gym. There was a couple hour window where you could go in and register for "after hours" access and get a FOB. Glad I took the time to do it. I totally didn't plan my goals until pretty much when I hit start on my timer for the jog LOL. I was intially just going to cut my rest in half…but then thought I would just try it and see how far I could go. I made it the full 5 min at 13 min/mil and my calves didn't lock up. My ankles were burning though from lactic acid, so I still have some strength to do. I was praying for that time to run out by the end, but made it! Was quiet chuffed….I will be in marathon shape again in no time 😂
I hope everyone has forword momenteum on whatever you are working towards.

Hello @CMorning99 my niece and her family came to visit me in San Diego last weekend. Her husband works on the base too. We talked about the T-minus Ten run and he was interested, in a non-runner kind of way.
I badgered him into agreeing to run it with me, then, the next day I looked and as it is "10 miles" rather than 10K it isn't something he's ready for. Also it looks like the Vanderberg version is an impromptu homage to the bigger one in Florida. (I called the rec center there and they didn't know anything about it.)
Seems like such a great place to run, with all the trails that are there.

Strava vs Garmin lawsuit
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2025/10/strava-sues-garmin-demands-stop-selling-devices.html
So Strava just sued Garmin for infringing on some of their patents. Wonder how long the Strava/Garmin integration/partnership will continue to work. Not sure if they realize a very very large chunk of the Strava users come from Garmin. Might shooting themselves in the foot. I'd use Strava for tracking but their tracking function sucks and it doesn't work when there is no cell reception. So maybe its time to just stick to one app in future…..

Welcome @nossmf . Sounds like you have a great plan for getting back into running. This is a very supportive group you have found.
You are doing great @CMorning99 . Congrats on the 5 min run! Glad you were able to get into the gym and hopefully that mess will be cleared up soon.
@chris_in_cal I think you should do the T-minus 10 miler, Vandenburg version. You could visit family in too. Doesn't sound like something that I should fly to participate in though. LOL
I hadn't hear about that @WarmJellyfish . Hopefully they will settle their differences and continue to cooperate for their customer's sake.
