OCTOBER 2025 Monthly Running Challenge

Just a quick check in. Did 4 miles yesterday and pushed the last one pretty hard. I felt drained all day after that so no walking even tho I almost went out after work I just felt like I needed a rest and it was HOT over 90 so I chose to relax. Up to about 26 total miles this month out of 120 with most of them running. Which is OK by me. 😎 The moon WAS really bright yesterday altho it was too low to see on the way back. I did see 2 skunks and one actually was across the street and ran parallel to me until the fence ended. I tried to stay far enough away not to be a threat altho I could tell it was not happy about me running the same direction. We are supposed to get some cooler mornings again by Friday so I am happy with that.

Reflections
It didn't hit me till this morning what I've actually done and emotions came pouring out.😭
I actually really thought before the race I would not be able to finish.
Thanks to all the shenanigans earlier in the year with the lung infection, broken rib that resulted in 3 months of down time, my training was about half of what it was last year. Was still struggling with some breathing issues. Longest training run was only 25k.
What got me to toe the line was, dang, paid the the expensive race fee already (always a good motivator), having some faith in my half baked training so far (Garmin Coach rocks!) and remembering what I did last year when 3 days after testing negative for covid I did another 50k in Sep (meh), but that was a year ago. I'm stupid that way. Can't be any worse than that right? One thing that got me through the race was was remembering November Victor Whiskey and conversations with God/Universe (I was pretty much by myself for the 2nd half of the race and needed a chat buddy). Asked it for shots in the arm and boy, did I get those.
Did also learn some valuable things for needed for more hydration and electrolytes.
Time to pat myself on the back 😁and plot new run fun shenanigans for next year. 😏
Already have another half baked plan to solo fastpack/trail run the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. One of those places I swore I wouldn't do again as it is expensive to do and I've already backpacked it a few times before. But 85kms of shin deep mud, muddy rooty trails, stupid ladders, heavy manual cable cars, creek crossings and running along sandy beaches for fun seems the right thing to do now. If I can make Nitinat river crossing before the last ferry crossing, I'm golden 😎

Our town finally finished road construction, so the biking/running trail is open again! So excited! I'm surrounding by hills, but the trail is relatively flat, so having that option is fabulous for me. running hills, all the time hurts my knees, so alternating terrain is helpful. Just had a Covid shot, so no running this week. However, 5K walks with the dogs will be on the schedule.

@ContraryMaryMary Congratulations on your HM. I'm glad you placed better than you expected too and that hill does look like a killer. Great views and weather are a plus for any race. I think you did great. Love that your picture is being used for promotion of the event. You're famous. 😉
Great running @tarun_yadavA , @username301 , @kgirlhart , @daria0919 , @CMorning99 , @Teresa502 , @John772016 , @AlphaHowls ,
@BigDfromNJ I'm not a running in the rain type person either. I don't mind running in it if it starts after I'm already running, but I don't think I have ever intentionally started a run in the rain.
Glad you are feeing better @SummerSkier . I can imagine how everything would hurt from 5 miles since you haven't been able to run much in a month.
That's some mojo @KR8214 !
Happy Birthday @WarmJellyfish and congrats on completing the ultra. I just can't imagine running that far and then driving home with no sleep. You are amazing. Looks like you had beautiful scenery, but the course sounds really tough.
@Scott6255 Nice run. I hope it is cooler in Atlanta for your race. It's supposed to be a lot cooler here, but Atlanta doesn't always follow suit. LOL
@yirara I hope you beat the reflux and sorry you are so disheartened by your phone.
@SummerSkier Don't push yourself too hard. I'm glad the skunk left you alone.
I'm glad that after some reflection you realize what an awesome job you did on the Ultra @WarmJellyfish . We are so hard on ourselves. And, we all knew that you would sign up for another race soon. 😉
Hoping you don't get a reaction from the CoVid shot @BigDfromNJ . What kind of dog do you have?
I think I am finally caught up. I hate it when I don't have the time to keep up with everyone. It's been raining today, so I may have to wait and run on the TM after I get home from work. If so, it'll probably be a short one.

@quilteryoyo @Mari33a thanks 😊
Aging Info: Nerd alert
I was wondering why I was sooooo slow. Partly because I was trying to live on memories from 2017 some 8 years ago when I did a parallel race. So nerdy me did some digging, with help from AI.
Apparently..Age-related declines in endurance running performance are well-documented in scientific literature. Research indicates that, for well-trained endurance athletes, running performance typically decreases by approximately 0.5% to 1% per year between the ages of 35 and 60. After age 60, this rate of decline may increase. Furman University+1
So looking at my pace from 2017 and now, my recent race pace works out! I had been keeping the same training volume and type (if it ain't broke…). There is about a 1 minute/km slower difference now compared to then, which when over a very long distance adds up!!!! grrrr😶😕😡
So, I'll need to up my game to get back to where I used to be, aka more huffing and puffing and there is hope. 🤔
A study examining the performance of sub-3-hour marathoners over five consecutive decades found that their marathon running speed decreased by less than 0.7% per year up to their late 50s. This suggests that with consistent training and racing regimens, it is possible to limit the age-related decline in marathon performance to less than 7% per decade at least until 60 years of age.
After the age of 60, the rate of decline in endurance running performance tends to accelerate. While runners between 35 and 60 years of age may experience a decline of approximately 0.5% to 1% per year, this rate can increase significantly after 60. (eek 😮😥)
Between the ages of 60 and 80, the rate of decline in endurance running performance accelerates compared to earlier decades. While the decline from 35 to 60 years is approximately 0.5% to 1% per year, from 60 to 80 years, this rate increases to about 1.5% per year
However, it's important to note that these declines are not inevitable. Maintaining a consistent training regimen, including aerobic conditioning, strength training, and adequate recovery, can mitigate the effects of aging on running performance. Some studies have shown that well-trained individuals can maintain a higher level of performance into their 70s and beyond
All is not lost, I just need to huff more smartly (and harder) and run till 80 😋(wonder if they'll let those with walkers on the course) 😏
All these new fangled training aids to help nowadays!6 -

reflux from hell. Meh.
05.09 strength
06.09 4.0km 32min 8:05/km - something
07.09 4.1km 32min 7:54/km - 11x20s faster8.0/81km - 10.2km behind
did 11 very short speed bursts after warmup. Still struggling with my phone. I have the feeling that the accelerometer has problems especially when picking up pace. Need to test this with a more dedicated app I think.4 -
Nice runs @AlphaHowls, @quilteryoyo, @kgirlhart, @ContraryMaryMary, @SummerSkier, @tarun_yadavA, @username301, @Mari33a, @nossmf, & @yirara.
Hope you sort out your phone issue @yirara. Very frustrating when you're expecting a result and not seeing it on an app (and my gut says it's your phone).
Oct:
01/10 - 6.55km / 4.07 miles
02/10 - 0km - Rest day
03/10 - 0km - Cycling - 28km
04/10 - 16.17km / 10.05 miles
05/10 - 0km - Rest day
06/10 - 6.66km / 4.14 miles
07/10 - 0km - Cycling - 25.11kmTotal = 29.39km / 18.26 miles (Goal - 125Km / 77.7 miles)
It was raining by the time I got home this afternoon & since I don't like starting a run in the rain, (though if I'm out on a run & starts raining, I'm good with it - I'm sensing I'm not alone 😉), I hopped on the stationary bike for a 25K ride to keep my cycling up for the month.
I hate I'm now the age where these damn studies say 'After the age of' & I need to actually check what frickin 'age' they quote!
Regardless, I know that I couldn't conceive of 'running' at 54; I now can't conceive 'not running' at 60!
My Mom, before she passed away, offered me that same walker after my spinal surgery @WarmJellyfish, albeit, half jokingly, as she hated it and never used it!
She did think I was moving too slow though, so 'it' was good for me & that would also get rid of 'it' for her!6 -
Great running @Mari33a , @nossmf , and @yirara .
@WarmJellyfish I wonder if that applies to those of us who didn't start running until much later in life?
Stationary bike ride is a great alternative to running in the rain @John772016 .
1 Oct - Walked 0.90 miles - Ran 2.35 miles - Treadmill
2 Oct - Walked 1.15 miles - Ran 0.00 miles - Driveway - Doubles tennis 1h49m42s (1.28 miles)
3 Oct - Walked 0.75 miles - Ran 2.75 miles - Treadmill
4 Oct - Walked 1.10 miles - Ran 0.00 miles - Driveway
5 Oct - Walked 1.00 miles - Ran 0.00 miles - Driveway

7 Oct - Walked 1.25 miles - Ran 0.00 miles - Treadmill14.35/80.00 mile goal
I didn't sleep the best last night, so was actually pretty happy that it was rainy during my break today so that I had a good excuse to nap in the car instead of running/walking. But, that puts me short on time after I get home because I really don't like eating much after 6 pm. A short treadmill walk it was to complete the day and keep on streaking.

@quilteryoyo it's only relevance is to explain how/why we slow down. Doesn't matter what stage you start at.
@John772016 was going to use that for my 80th birthday race.....

Today the plan called for a 50 minute tempo run. It was really nice at 65°F and the dew point was 59°. The moon was bright and beautiful. I ran 6 miles which was a little more than the plan called for, but I felt good about the run.

Great running! @WarmJellyfish I can attest to things getting more difficult in the 60's but I refuse to believe that we need to gain weight and be less fit. My motto this year was to get stronger healthier and more fit. Which actually worked pretty well for the first few months…😂😏 then of course I got sick a few times and had some injuries and it all became a struggle. I think my biggest lesson from that is captured in these sayings I like to repeat.
Yesterday was a rest day so I did a 30 min run only. I am pleased to see my RHR was 60 this morning and my sleeping HR was 57 which is a lot more normal for me. People keep asking me how I am. I think the answer is that I got over the virus itself but it takes longer to actually recover than expected or rather we should pay attention and not push while the body is still recovering. Still need to get my flu shot. And yes - get those covid and flu shots my friends!
“Keeping the habit alive is a powerful act. It's easier to stay in shape than to get in shape. It's easier to keep a house clean than to get it clean.
Many days it may feel like you are treading water, but maintaining your progress saves your future self a great deal of work."
“You know, that all-or-nothing attitude. Then I told myself (again) that just because I am losing the air in one tire tomorrow, doesn’t mean I have to let the air out of the other three. It worked.”

Only reaction to Covid shot this time was sore arm and headache! So much better than past shots when I literally got sick for 3 days.
@quilteryoyo My 2 rescue dogs: Black Lab (Gracie) and Chocolate Lab (Hershey) are quite happy with me taking them on long walks!
@SummerSkier I love your quote: So True!
“Keeping the habit alive is a powerful act. It's easier to stay in shape than to get in shape. It's easier to keep a house clean than to get it clean.
Have a great day everyone! Keep Moving!

Hey @BigDfromNJ I'm happy to hear you got through the shot pretty easily. How is your schedule looking, which day do you think you can lace'em up and do a run?

Nice walks & runs @quilteryoyo, @kgirlhart, @tarun_yadavA, @SummerSkier, & @nossmf!
@SummerSkier - Years ago, I used to say, "It's easier to keep a house clean than to move."
Though I did move 6 times in 7 years during the time I was saying that.Oct:
01/10 - 6.55km / 4.07 miles

Waited until early afternoon for the air to warm up(!) a bit (it was about 34⁰F cooler this morning than it was on Monday). It did warm up (~14⁰C / 58⁰F) but the wind was wicked cold making it hard for me to breathe today. Still a nice run in the sun.

I ran 4.01M at 12'49 out at the lake.
Looks like most everyone is healing up and starting to put in some miles(kilometers)
What's the fall race calendar looking like? Is anyone preping for a big upcoming race?

October Walking/Running
Oct 4 - 6km Run
Oct 7 - 2.37km walkI was going to run today as I was off for an appointment today. After delays I FINALLY for my dental implant today. However, my instructions were no strenuous activities for 24 hours that could elevate my hear rate due to the stitches around the implant. I think running elevates the heart rate just a little. I am going to try to get myself out for a run after work tomorrow. I find it hard to keep myself motivated to
4 -
Ohhh…implants are big process. I hope it all works out for you @angf0679

@WarmJellyfish I was hoping since I started running later in life, I would see some more improvements before I start slowing down. 😂
Nice running @kgirlhart , @tarun_yadavA (excellent pace) , @nossmf , @John772016 , @chris_in_cal ,
@SummerSkier I'm glad you are seeing your HR going in the right direction. "Yesterday was a rest day so I did a 30 min run only." That made me laugh….only a runner would call that a rest day. Love those quotes.
@BigDfromNJ Glad you didn't have much of a reaction to the CoVid shot.
@angf0679 Yes, I think running would have raised the HR just a tad. LOL I hope you heal quickly and are able to get out for that run tomorrow.

I was scheduled to work from 8 - 3 today, but since I have been taking my break at 2, I worked 8 - 2 and then ran some errands before heading home. One of those errands was putting a hold on my gym membership. I had planned to cancel it, since I haven't been in about 3 months, but the manager told me I could put it on hold for 6 months and not be charged. That way, if I changed my mind, I could start back without having to pay a new member fee. So, that is what I did. I just have too much going on to have another thing on my schedule.
When I got home, I had just 1.5 hours until I needed to leave for church. So, I went out for a short driveway wun. The run wasn't too bad - pace was 13:12 min/mile. Avg HR was 132 with a max of 149 bpm.

The plan for today was 3 x 1600 m at 10K pace. It was a pretty tough run. I really had to work to keep the pace, but I did and I felt good.
Today is my 10 year streak anniversary on MFP. I have lost 80 pounds. It took me about a year to lose and I have been in maintenance for about 9 years. I also started running 9 years ago. (I looked back and 9.25.2016 was the date I started C25K.) I don't really like to brag on myself, but I am very proud of myself for losing the weight, keeping it off, and developing healthy habits. This group has helped me stay motivated and accountable, so I give y'all some of the credit for my success.
@SummerSkier This is so true:
“Keeping the habit alive is a powerful act. It's easier to stay in shape than to get in shape. It's easier to keep a house clean than to get it clean."
@chris_in_cal I am training for a Half in November. I ran it last year. It is very hilly so challenging, but fun.

Morning all
Got in 5.5 at 11'42
5 -
@tarun_yadavA it blows my mind you can run a 830 or better 10 k and the next day run at 1142….
0 -
I can see great runs all round. After restarting I can definitely say not running for a year really impacts your fitness. Suddenly 5k is a long way!
8 -
Recovery week for me. Just one shakedown run on Tuesday. Tonight is the usual thursday night Trail crew.
@kgirlhart congrats on the weight loss and maintenance. Big achievement. Inspiring! I'm still working on that…
@quilteryoyo I think can improve, just how badly we want it.
And I just had an epiphany...😈

WELCOME BACK @TheMrWobbly!
