Ladies ~ Thank you all for your caring comments! All I can say for now is I am really, really sad and the house seems very lonely. I had no idea when we went to the ER on Sept 22 that he would not come home again. My son, daughter-in-law, the grands, and family are being really supportive as best they can. Carol in GA 20

Tired body today. Did a total body weight workout that I was supposed to do Saturday but was derailed when we went to help out friend. Then a 30 minute swim. Then to Walmart for groceries. $500 later- had to haul them all in and put them away by myself with lots going downstairs. Funny how there is never anyone around to help with unloading 🤷🏻♀️Got over 12,000 steps in. So today will be an easy 30 minute walk, probably on the treadmill during a meeting that my camera will not be on for. Spoke to my dad yesterday. He is still waiting for his lens so really no vision in one eye. Says driving is "no problem!" Other than getting out of the garage at his complex as it is very narrow. So then there is a problem… I am heading home next week. I took the week off of work. It is stressful going home and to tell the truth, it is more out of guilt than anything else. My sisters don't speak so I have to navigate around their relationship. They put me in the middle which I hate. I can only take my dad in small doses. He is very rude to waitstaff if we go out to eat. He has absolutely no patience for anyone or anything. I am getting a knot in my stomach just thinking about it. He also refuses to wear his hearing aids even though everything has to be repeated twice. I feel guilt as he is my dad and did provide for us. He hates my chosen profession. Can't understand why I didn't choose human medicine as he wanted to be a doctor. And being a child of immigrants thinks farming is a loser occupation. Doctors (other than veterinarians), lawyers, and engineers are noble professions. As an aside, he was none of those. Sorry for the rant. Once I get going it spills out of me. It feels good to release it. Take care of yourselves 💕 Melanie 12

Morning, my dears, Corey's off to the working world, and I'm at home with my usual Monday morning chores and getting the next bits put on the painting. It's going slow, but it is going, at least. October is nearly over, and since Corey's brother is still working for him, he will be able to take an entire week off in November and another off in December. He needs it - it was a long, hot summer for him. Care packages: Sent a care package via Amazon to my daughter—the Army did get paid on the 15th of October, but may not get paid on Nov. 15th. I'll say no more, as it would edge into the political. Just… worried. They will get it all back, in the end, but in the meantime, they were already living too close to the edge due to issues earlier in the year. Domestic goddessing all over the place: I am finishing the last three panels of my son-in-law's afghan and already also drop-shipped Christmas presents for the grands, which my daughter will stash until they celebrate - which will be in early January, as they will be at their bio-father's for Christmas. If I can get this interminable afghan finished, I can get it and my daughter's cardigan in the mail, too. I did say I'd hold onto them until they came through next summer, but am purely incapable of doing so. Kids AND adults ought to have a surprise at Christmas, even if they are wholly inappropriate for Hawaiian weather! 😂👀😍 Still debating on even messing around with Thanksgiving for the two of us. We might, so Patrick will have some place to go, but that would pretty much be the only reason. Neither of us is fond of turkey, but it's a good excuse to bake a country ham, which we all enjoy. Got plenty of time to decide. Am going to put a bread dough together today that can rise in the refrigerator slowly overnight - the other night, when I made pizza, after the leftover half of the dough had sat in the fridge overnight, I made it into a loaf of sun-dried tomato and parmesan swirl bread. It ended up being the perfect texture for bread, not nearly as fall-aparty as all commercial bread seems to be these day. So I'm going to try to make some hamburger buns and slider buns from it and see how those bake up. It literally takes 10 minutes to put this recipe together, and five of it is in the stand mixer, while I walk away and let it do the kneading. This is the recipe: Half of it the correct size to make a full-sized loaf of very hearty bread. And it doesn't, by the way, taste anything like Domino's pizza crust. It's good, though. And… time to get my meds set up for the week, and enjoy the day however I choose… Carol - Always glad to see your icon pop up. Hope your family is really stepping up for you in your time of need. Heather - Loved the pics of Cadiz! Take care of that knee… Melanie - We all do that, I think it's Rebecca that says just dump it all here, and we'll push it off to the margins of the page and keep going. Glad we can be a safe space for you. Meant to add - two days on the rower, two days on the elliptical last week! Pleased with that. Plan to keep it up. My weight is continuing to inch upward, and I'm working on that, too. Without notable success at the moment, but I also know that I always gain a few pounds when I start exercising. My body's way of preferring laziness, I think. Later, my dears,

Carol (hugs held extra extra extra long) Take your time, no need to do anything but be sad. Happy birthday Kay! Michele, Katla came to my mind too. Thursday I texted her “Just saw a hummingbird and thought of you. Miss you.” She texted back “I miss you, too. I am still in Illinois.” Then I texted her “Has winter started there? Last beautiful fall day here before the rain starts.” No reply. Rori does asking questions cause stress for people with memory issues? Been reading right along an really enjoying Heather’s (hubba hubba) cruise, but no time to comment. Time to shower and go to line dance class! Later, lighter, lovelies!

My weight is holding in there, staying at about the same around 178. I wish it would go down, but staying the same is ok with me. Had a Calzone (well half of it as it was leftover from restaurant visit) that was delicious re-heated as it was fresh from the oven at the restaurant. Never can eat it all. Told DH that next time we go there, I was getting soup and salad! lol Son finally got back on his psych meds and is sounding much more normal. He has decided to go to a half-way house next and while there, look for scholarships to go to a sober house after that program is over. I approve of that course of action as it keeps him in some sort of rehab for the next 6 months. Though it is voluntary, at least he has a roof over his head and food for the winter. I can rest easy as long as he stays there. DH has good days and bad. I just take that with a grain of salt (detachment) and tell myself it is not my monkey, not my circus. Same goes for problems here at the park. I won't need to work the Visitor Center much longer as we have a host who came here just to work the visitor center. However, the ranger supervisor is off hunting (why am I not surprised) and can't get the host set up with paperwork until he gets back, which may not be until mid-November. Lisa - I am still in Ohio but moved a bit over an hour away to northeast part of Columbus (25 minutes from DS). Predicting rain several days this week. Our high of 62 is the best for this week-then we stick with low 50s during day and nights in 40s. Carol - I can relate to not knowing the outcome when you make an emergency room trip. My husband rapidly deteriorated after 10 days in ICU. It was shocking when I realized he would not be coming home. Take care of yourself. Grief is an individual process I am continuing to sort through the stuff I brought with me that I couldn't deal with before moving. Hopefully done with it this week. Take care all, Ginny in Ohio 9

Hello, my friends; I tell you, those doctor appointments can wear one out. So, I understand what you mean, Allie. I was so tired last week. I mentioned my machine to my sleep doctor. I got in a fight with my machine in the middle of the night. The cord was wrapped around me, and I thought I was tied up I woke up when the machine fell to the ground. Now it sputters in the beginning and then clears. So, I qualify for a new machine at no extra cost. The next day, I saw my therapist, and I told him about DH's job and my short-term new job that only lasted for a short time. I feel kind of blue and stressed. He wants me to make an effort to go to the gym starting in November. Working out consistently does improve my mood. I feel DH stresses me out, too. I will be glad when he starts his job in 7 days, and yes, I am counting. I was hoping that when I move, I can take time off before starting, but he told me no, that I need to pay DS student loans, and for the upcoming semester. My head has been hurting, maybe due to the rain, but today it is sunny. DD sent a message saying she needs home-cooked food. I told her I could send some recipes she could make. She told me that she wanted me to cook. I told her that I was working and she had better get some canned soup then. Work is highly stressful, too. We need all of the ventilated patients together. We have a three-year-old down the hall who is taking himself off the vent, so I literally have to run down the hall to put him back on. May stop by work tonight to correct my students' charting. They did send that baby home with her mom. I was so bummed. She put her in the front seat, not the back. They should have told her to move her to the back seat. CPS is incompetent. I pray it doesn't take another death to realize that some of these parents do not care. Heather, this trip agrees with you. You look terrific and fit. John looks good, too. I love the photography and the interesting tidbits of your journey. Thanks for taking us with you. Everyone, thank you for the Happy Birthday wishes. Carol, sending hugs. I wish I could sit with you and hear all about DH and help you through your grief. All I can do is continue to pray for you and your family. When you are ready to talk, we are here. It is hard to be without the love of your life. Take time to do positive things for yourself, and journal your feelings or write him a letter saying goodbye. That is what I did when I lost my first daughter. Beth, have fun doing Trunk or Treat. My co-workers want to dress up and have a theme, "Winnie the Pooh." They asked me what I was going as, and I said the narrator. 😂🤣 Lisa, I cannot wait to see the Afghan that you are making for your son-in-law. Lanette, do you get any help with getting your property ready for the winter? It just sounds like a big, heavy-duty job. By the way, your friend is a hoot. Melanie, it sounds like you are pretty busy. Do you ever plan to retire? Childcare can be tiring. Did you feel exhausted as well? Pip, sounds like you are falling in love with running again. You got your groove back. Now I am going to work on getting mine back. Seriously, you are doing great. Chispa, Lucy, and Ethyl look happy, too. Has the carpet come in yet? I hope you all have a wonderful day. XO, Mo in Mississippi 9

We asked a couple back to our cabin this evening for champagne. They are very nice, especially the wife. I usually chat to her during choir. A very mismatched couple, I would say. She has just qualified as a minister in the church, and he is recovering from a broken ankle which is still causing him huge problems after six operations and sepsis. He was extra fit and just tripped on a stair. Major pain killers including morphine and considering amputation. Made a nice change to be sociable!! John has gone off to the performance and I am having a night in, reading. Bliss. Heather xxx 6

            thanks for the bd wishes.
Carol, although different circumstances but I understand the “thought we would be coming home feeling “ y’all remember last Thanksgiving when Mama and I went and got my brother after his car accident and the possum got into my pies? After the accident in April that took his life, Mama just kept saying over and over “ I thought we were going to get him to bring him home like at Thanksgiving “ it was so hard for her.Lanette, you are correct. The limit is 20 books. I went and counted. Dave had no less than 18 checked out! I made him return one so that I could have 3 and read the next book in the series you recommended. I needed another one for Sunday School that I will need to keep for several months. 5

Carol - it’s nice to see you check in. Rita - I hope your son continues on his path to help. It must be incredibly stressful for you when he is struggling. Lisa - I bet your care package is a huge help to your daughter and family.
I know there was more, but struggling to find alone time to catch up in a meaningful way.Kaitlyn and Brodey are coming Wednesday night so we can have a long discussion with my MIL. I wrote a six page document out last week for a record of what I learned while I was in NB. Rodger is going to the bank tomorrow to get statements for the last two years. Yesterday we had a houseful. Jasmyne and the twins came, Michaela was here, and we had Aspen and Raquel. Maryann (MIL) taught the girls how to make strawberry freezer jam. Kaitlyn ended up with 14 large bottles and Raquel had 26 small ones. Apparently the next lesson will be cinnamon rolls. it was a fun day. Tracey in Edmonton 12

My sisters don't talk to each other either- and like you, I am the one stuck in the middle. I only hear from them when they want something. My younger sister text me just as zumba class was starting- told her I would text her later. Tomorrow is later, right ;)
She will be moving out to mom's, not sure when.Hopefully it won't be for very long- Mom is not happy about it but sister has no other place to go.Mom and I had planned on not telling either sister that I was taking her down for her MRI- with sister there at the house, she will know. It isn't too bad. This sister wants mom to have it done, the older sister is the one who begged me to not take her. Mom's decision. I am just the driver and the listening ear for her. Debbie

Tuesday Got a great bicycle ride in! The wind kicked up a bit toward the end, but otherwise the weather was good. When I got back, I headed out to the front garden to wield my mattock and dig up more of the evil grass! Making progress … slowly, slowly. Then we were off to Bunnings. My husband got stuff for the back garden. I got 3 Little Bibis for the front garden. Plus a couple fans for our indoor gym which gets quite warm if the sun is out. Machka in Oz 7

I enjoyed this morning's painting session. Bird of Paradise flower. Some days it goes well, other days . . . . . not so well. I'm pleased with this effort. Off to line dancing in a moment. Knees quite sore today. You can feel you are on the sea today, but we have been so lucky this trip. Considering we are in the notorious Bay of Biscay. Saw dolphins through our window the other day. Just sent off my last lot of laundry. One perk of this cabin is the free laundry. It all comes back beautifully ironed and the socks and knickers wrapped in a little package. :-) Another perk is the free fine wine. We've been choosing the most expensive bottles on the list. Margaux, Montrachet, Mercurey, Tattainger champagne. Usually we drink half a bottle between us, though my share is lower than John's. We have a coffee pod machine and a kettle for tea. Canapés at 4.45. Apart from a couple of days, we have been eating breakfast in the room. The butler lays the table with a cloth and napkins. I have melon and papaya with yoghurt, and cheese, deli meat, and a hard boiled egg. My self-imposed cruise protocol of v low carb, and very little wheat, suits me perfectly. My stomach bloating has gone, and I feel so much better. Loads of veg, salad, protein. I certainly haven't put on any weight, and may have lost a pound or two. I look better. Of course, it's easy to keep this up while someone else is chopping and preparing everything. Harder at home, especially as John loves his bread. But I just know I feel good, eating like this. Every night I have no potatoes, and extra spinach. Lunch is often a tiny starter and a salad. The portions are a reasonable size, smaller than I serve at home. A three course dinner, including cheese, is perfectly doable, without feeling stuffed. I've persuaded the waiter to serve me very small pieces of cheese. I do indulge in a couple of petits fours, one of which is stem ginger. Back to reality on Thursday morning. We are the first off, at 8.10. Should be home midmorning. Love Heather xxx 9

Carol-Hugs and prayers continue. Sadly, there are many here who have been where you are. As Ginny said, Grief is personal, but support is here. Had planned on check in yesterday, but got occupied. Took the cats to a new vet yesterday. It is called the "Scratching Post". Only cats for patients. I was impressed with the atmosphere, the staff, the vet, and the care. Both girls were relaxed. Tori is a little heavy. Now to keep my husband from overfeeding! Amanda also asked me about the lump on Tori's leg. I had never noticed. I tend to rub belly and ears. Vet thinks it is from rabies vax a month ago. He shaved the area and told me to keep an eye on it. It may need removed if it doesn't start shrinking. I told them about my cats severe reaction to their shots. Lethargy, crying, lack of appetite for 36-48 hrs. Dr. Summers said there are other vaccines to use. The previous clinic was not concerned at all. My girls will be going back. Waiting for DH to finish shaving and let them back in. Our grumpy long time mechanic is actively dying. He was actually feeling better after cancer treatment last year. He even had both cataracts removed this past spring. In August, they biopsied a spot on his adrenal gland. One chemo treatment about killed him. He said he hadn't been in pain until that biopsy and he was done. He said no more. Up until 2 weeks ago, he still came in every day for a couple of hours. He hadn't had food in 2 weeks, sleeping 20+ hrs a day, kidneys shutting down. Hospice has been coming to the house since mid September. Was once a week, tapering down to every day. Today is his 64th birthday. DH and I are going over before work. I am sad for his family, but not for him. He hadn't had a good quality of life since several mini strokes 7 years ago. His grumpy butt will be missed though. Happy Birthday, Kay! Tracey-What a wonderful gift you have given your family! Gotta get ready for day! Hugs! Love! And Prayers! Kylia in Ohio 8

Morning, dear hearts, Kylia - Your two girls are growing up to be beautiful ladies… I can understand why you want someone to take care of them who knows cats and cares about them. The picture is of an Egg that has just heard a thunder boomer. The lightning's all around us now. Not lots, but quite loud. She's moved under the desk, and if another one hits too close, she'll go live under the bed until it's over. I'm kind of fascinated by what she understands and what she doesn't. There are things she understands quite well - especially time's passage, routines and actions that follow on certain other actions. Corey comes home, he backs up the truck (it beeps) into his parking spot. He comes inside, greets me, greets her, grabs a beer, and they go for a walk. Every time he stands still long enough, or sits down, she sharpens her claws on his leather boots. He's a size 12, and each foot is nearly the same length she is. The morning she spends on my lap if she can, and if it's not thunder booming. The days, who knows? She's in the house curled up somewhere or out harassing the woodchuck that's bigger than she is. Or contemplating the deer, or sneering at the squirrels. Will be as busy a day as I want it to be for me—if I'm up to it I can go into town and pick up a couple things for the garden and for dinner. Got refrigerated bread rising in my oven (it has a proof setting), and once it's shaped, risen again and then baked, I'll probably do that. Laundry can wait until tomorrow. Depends on how much work I want to do on the painting in the meantime. But the lightning has, at least for the moment, moved on, and I think I'll stay awhile and catch up on some of my online newsletter subscriptions. She's at peace, and so am I. Later, Love, Lisa in AR 8

Back from my trip with my son from St. Louis will be posting pictures and more about what we did. It was a good blend of family, friends, and Attractions…I always gain a bit more perspective about myself and my childhood that translates to where I am as an adult today. I am also getting better at speaking up when needed and going with the flow as required. Catch phrases that help me time to change the channel…Time for flowers for times when I need to speak up. Continuing to work on being proactive rather than reactive another helpful catch phrase for in times of strengthening my boundaries. Sometimes you need to put space between you and others and that is okay. What part of No do we not understand. I am making it sound like I had a trip with difficult people quite the contrary it was by using my catch phrasing when necessary either verbally or mentally to myself it helped to make my interactions with others in those push moments have successful outcomes because my boundaries were strong. 8
