Hello

Hi, my name is Alicia (or Ali for short)

I am a 41 y o Vegan diabetic weighing 219. I lost 20 lbs over the last 8 months. I am here to get healthy, lose weight, compete in any health challenges or exchange information with other like minded people. Doctors are putting me on long term insulin in Feb ‘26 and I am hoping to beat this dark road of insulin/diabetes before then! Any helpful plant based food ideas or beginners workout routines (focusing on belly) would be greatly appreciated !

Best of luck! Maybe your doctors could refer you to a dietician who specializes in diabetes?

In general I would think focusing on legumes and legume-based foods (tofu, soy milk, hummus, falafel), whole grains, vegetables, mushrooms, nuts in moderate amounts, and fruit within whatever carb or sugar limits your doctors or dietician set would be the way to go.

Figuring out whether you gained the extra weight by consuming lots of calorie-dense foods (Oreos are vegan) or by eating high volumes of non-calorie-dense foods should help you figure out the changes you need to make.

If by exercises that focus on the belly you mean you're hoping to spot reduce based on the exercises you do, that's not really a thing. Your body is going to reduce fat based on a calorie deficit in the areas and order where it's genetically inclined to do so. But Pilates, yoga, and crunches can all build your core muscles and may improve posture and the way you look at any given weight.
