Bariatric surgery patient being penalised

I don’t think it’s fair that I am being penalised for sticking to a 600 calorie per day meal plan as instructed by my bariatric surgeon and dietician. I am 18 days post op from gastric sleeve surgery and have been instructed to eat 600 calories per day, definitely NOT to attempt to eat 1000 calories a day. Please consider adding a setting for bariatric patients to input their own calorie and weightloss goals. As someone who is morbidly obese and has had surgery as a last ditch effort to lose weight, I don’t enjoy being told I am at risk and “likely not eating enough” at the end of every day when I complete my food journal.

Don’t complete your food diary each day - then you won’t see the message. It doesn’t do anything anyway 🤷‍♂️

Please also understand that MFP won’t support people eating under the recommended calorie intake. It would leave them open to lawsuits and could encourage eating disorders. You are unusual in that your very low calorie intake is being supported by doctors - I wish you the best of luck.

I (generally) agree with @claireychn074 here. We do have a responsibility to ensure that the average person isn't encouraged to undertake the diet you're on, as that is factually proven to be dangerous and harmful. There's not a one-size-fits-all solution to this issue that helps keep the vast majority of people safe without somewhat inconveniencing people like yourself who do have legitimate medical cause to do what you're doing.

If you or anyone else has an actionable suggestion on how we can reasonably accommodate these sorts of goals while not relaxing our safety standards or infringing on user privacy, we would love to hear them.

Thanks for the responses. While I do appreciate there are fewer of us, there are still thousands and thousands of bariatric patients every year eating the same or similar restrictions to me post-surgery, and as far as I know, we are all recommended to use calorie tracking apps such as MFP or others post-surgery. As I said, it would be great if MFP could consider adding a seperate portal or feature where we could enter our surgery dates, calorie goals as laid out by our surgeons and dieticians, and other tools that would benefit a bariatric patient specifically.

Bariatric & also other medical diets can also have odd macros, so, could there be a setting a person could select to indicate for bariatric, diabetes, other majors, maybe the newer glp/medication, f.ex...

the setting could allow variance - such as allowed with IF?

Or, perhaps trigger a different message when closing the diary?

Thanks for your insight, yes that’s exactly what I was thinking. MFP is a useful tool but it would be wonderful to see features like this added to help a more diverse range of users track their specific goals and needs.
