SiL rang us about 30 minutes ago to update us. BiL had the growth removed today. The biopsy result was very encouraging. They have re-connected the bowel, and will keep him in for a few days just to make sure that everything is working properly. He will be getting chemo just to make sure there is nothing remaining.SiL was allowed to visit him this evening. They will keep him in recovery tonight and move him onto the ward tomorrow.

Terri - So glad the news is good so far! Keeping a good thought for you and your family…
Just finished the pockets on this one. Still trying to decide… I might keep this one for me.
Working on the next piece, but it's a completely new design of my own. Pleased so far - but a quite radical departure from what I've done so far.
Later, my dears…

Rori safe travels!
Very belated welcome @SherryRueter , Sherry in Memphis! I had sciatica from mid-August through October. Three chiropractic appointments, one MD, 3 days muscle relaxers, ultra sound to rule out DVT, and two therapeutic massages. What cured me was the second massage, where she worked on the muscles of my pelvic floor. Awkward, uncomfortable, but the next day the pain was GONE and has stayed gone. Good luck!
Lisa oh I am sure you were and are a complete bada$$! 35 years smoking? It took pneumonia, hospitalization, two weeks on oxygen, five weeks out of work and a year on Nicorette to break my 33 year habit. So thankful that the scent now nauseates me but can still remember the sensation of nicotine…
Mo Tumble is barking, eating, peeing, pooping and bossing us all around, like normal. Other than the six inch scar in her chest you’d never know she’d had cancer. Thanks for asking! ((hugs)) I love you too.
Flea I copied your roasted chickpea recipe and will try it soon. Thanks!
Terry alien installed intermittent memory wipers in the doorways. That’s it!!!
Tuna casserole, boil up some egg noodles, mix in partially drained cans of tuna, bag of frozen peas, cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt and pepper to taste, top with crushed potato chips, bake 30 mins at 350. Hmm, past time I made this for Joe.
Allie prayers for Doris.
Machka thanks for the ACDC/Melbourne link. Never too many bagpipers ;}
Through pg 11, good night all!
Later, lighter, lovelies!

Ginny - Nice to see you pop on.
Hope you have a speedy recovery.Lisa - I absolutely love the purples in that sweater.
Gorgeous.I’m still plugging along. Got prescriptions transferred and results of an ultrasound for MIL today, it seems like a long list of things to do yet, but we’re getting through it.
I picked up my new glasses after work, I was advised not to start wearing them until tomorrow. My left eye felt funny, but she said there is enough of a prescription change they may take some getting used to.
I’m off to bed, it’s been a long week and it’s only Tuesday.

Carpenter Bees - have a read!
"Carpenter bees have short mouthparts and are important pollinators on some open-faced or shallow flowers; for some they even are obligate pollinators, for example the maypop (Passiflora incarnata) and Orphium, which are not pollinated by any other insects. They also are important pollinators of flowers with various forms of lids, such as Salvia species and some members of the Fabaceae."
Honey Bees
We've got 2 hives of honey bees now! 🐝
The hive we've had for a while now contains a big active colony and we think we'll need to harvest honey at some point in the next 2 or 3 weeks. 🐝🐝
Front Garden
I have plans for the front garden, which I may have mentioned last year, which will see a whole lot more flowers for the bees. 🌿🌳🥀🌺
We have a long sort of triangular front lawn, approximately the shape to the right.
The lawn consists of horrible grass that's like a thousand vines and I'm trying to remove it all. I could rent some sort of equipment and dig it up, but that would cost quite a bit of money, so I'm tackling it by hand and by mattock. Good upper body exercise.
I've dug up several spots and have already started planting.
At the tip of the triangle, I've got an area of Seaside Daisies (Erigeron karvinskianus) — drought tolerant and good for a coastal area. They were actually here already, I just moved them.
Next to them is the rose garden. My husband loves roses and planted quite a few there.
A little further along is the protea zone.
Then a patch of kangaroo paw.
And now I'm working on the purple zone which will (hopefully) contain a number of different native plants with purple flowers. Good for the bees.
Back Garden
My husband is working on the back garden.
He put in a small orchard which is starting to produce tiny little fruit. Some of it may be ripe by the end of December. Unfortunately, our lemon tree is not doing at all well for some reason.
He's about halfway through putting in a vegetable garden — that is, building the structure and putting in the soil for the veggie garden. Planting will be next.
Our hope is to get a decent portion of our fruit and veg from our own garden!
And I'm still working on closing a particular bank account. I have managed to fix a couple things but now need to wait till next week to do the closing step. I hope. The hassle involved it just astounding!
I've been wanting to close this account for some time, but kept putting it off — procrastinating. Now I know why.

Welcome to you both! Drop in whatever conversation you feel comfortable entering, and if you'll sign your posts with the name you want to be called and at least a general location, we'll get to know you quickly. We do avoid politics and religion to keep this a safe and sane place for us all, but tend to talk about our whole lives, as we know that to get healthy, it involves everything in your life. And that's the goal, whether stated or not - to get and stay healthy throughout our lives. If it seems like we all know each other, you'd be surprised how quickly you will feel you know and care about everyone in the group. Look forward to hearing your voices join this chorus,
Warmest regards,
Lisa in Arkansas9 -
Morning, my chicks,
Tracey - Been thinking about you, kid, but figured you were up in the minutiae of trying to add another life to yours and Rodger's. Hope the rest ends with a whimper, not a bang, when the auction gets accomplished. Desperation is the fuel for an awful lot of stupidity in this world. Thanks for the comment - I'm a sucker for purple, I really am.
Allie - Thank you, darlin'. I think about you every day. Now that you're sleeping, you can get back to health. Once you start moving, it will be even better. You can do this! Just two steps today, three steps tomorrow. It won't hurt so much to move now that you've pulled all that weight off!
Machka - Love the idea of your front garden, and especially that so much of it is native plants. It's a real issue over here, too. I just watched a piece on the chestnut blight that killed literally millions of North American chestnut trees and continues to keep them from growing. It was from Chinese chestnuts brought in as ornamental trees in U.S. yards - and destroyed SO much of the woodlands. The chestnuts still grow, but the fungus cripples them before they get even a few feet high. So much of North America has been invaded by these plants and fish and animals brought in from other places, before they ever knew what the term "invasive species" meant. The kudzu, in the south, is trying to take over the world. It's part of why I just ripped out the English ivy in my front bed. It's beautiful, but destructive. I've seen a lot on the rabbits and the cane toads in Australia, too, so I know its an issue there.
Now that cardigan is off my brain, the designer that lives in the back of my head is in full flood. I've got some of the pieces I need to start my daughter's quilt, and ideas on what I want to do. Writing yesterday, designing and creating today.
I do love my life, even though I'm not terribly happy with my weight at the moment. I did know that when the meds got me back to some semblance of normal, I'd start gaining weight. I've been in the habit of eating everything I could for the last five years so I could keep the weight on, and it is a BAD habit to be in for someone who doesn't want to be heavy.
I've successfully got myself to exercise every day for a few weeks now, with the elliptical at 20 minutes, plus weights and the rower at 11 minutes the next day, plus shoulder exercises and yoga. Happy with that. Time to get happy with my eating as well.
As Rori says, we can do this!
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa in AR7 -
The boiler went off this morning for no reason. Some kind of stuck valve somewhere in the system, I suspect. I got it back on by switching on and off at the wall, and texted the plumber. It's going OK at the moment and he will come out if needed. A nuisance, to say the least. We had a small flurry of snow this morning.:-(
Waiting for my new knee sleeve to arrive. The Amazon delivery driver has taken to dropping things off without even ringing the bell, when it is only an arm's width away!
I think you should keep that jacket Lisa, and allow yourself to be cheered up by the colour. :-)
Welcome to the new folks!
I find myself really knocked out when I'm cold. As if I'm stuck to the spot. Let's hope the heating keeps going.

Of course, we all on here know this already, don't we. 😉
😀 Heather, you are so right. The trick isn't knowing the right thing, it's getting ourselves to do what we know is right. We all know that it's healthier to cook protein and veg at home rather than grab a meal from a fast food place, but easier seems to win out. We all know that walking is great but sitting on the couch is easier. I read this thread to be inspired by others to do what's best rather than what's easiest.
😀 Barbara, your recipe for tuna casserole sounds like what my mother made which was delicious but since some of those ingredients are items I don't eat anymore, I'll be content with the pleasant memories.

Yesterday, what sounded good for dinner was Arby's 5 piece steak bites. I had that with yogurt and a protein shake. Lunch was 2 rollups. Inside were 2 pickled asparagus spears laid on a slice of havarti cheese, and turkey. I put a row of kewpie mayo down too. Sprinkled with everything bagel seasoning. Just what my body wanted.
Of course I had gotten up really early yesterday so my days eating was early too. By 5 pm I had eaten all I planned out. So stomach still wanting, so I had some protein nacho chips and cottage cheese as dip. Thinking I would be up in weight, nope still the same 202 lbs this morning. Thinking gah do I have to eat more to lose? Actually feel like I am coming down with a sinus headache. This mornings gym might just be weight lifting then sitting in the sauna.🙃

Welcome to the new ladies!
Just popping on to see how everyone is doing. Glad you are starting to rest, Allie.
Tracey … it will be such a relief when the house is auctioned. Thinking of you and your family.
Ginny … rest quietly and heal completely!
A couple of nice days this week so I've been able to get some more fall clean-up done outside. I'm hoping to use the mower to mulch the rest of the leaves this afternoon before rain comes in at the end of the week. Still not impressed with the battery operated leaf blower, but it's something.
Had my first ocular migraine Monday evening. I used to get severe migraines in my early 20's, but really haven't had much of anything for years. The vision disturbance was frightening, but subsided quickly. I happen to have a yearly appointment with my ophthalmologist next week and will discuss it with her then. My son gets ocular migraines often.
Have a good day!

Woke up to winter- 4 inches of snow. Roads are a disaster. Glad I don't have to drive to work. Did have to feed cows this morning as my husband and kids are away today. Beautiful morning:
I read that many of you have chronic pain. I had a terrible back for years. My chiropractor told me at 17 that if I had another bad fall ski racing that I could lose feeling in my left leg forever. I then quit. But back pain continued to plague me. I ended up in the hospital for 4 days after I bent over and it went out. Needed an ambulance as I couldn't get up. I came across Dr Sarno a few years ago and his book "The Mindbody Prescription". I also found Nicole Sachs podcast "The Cure For Chronic Pain". If you are interested, listen to the first episode which is her story and how Dr Sarno helped her. He was an orthopaedic back surgery but believed in a cure for many without surgery. I have not had back pain for many years now and if I get a chronic pain twinge somewhere else in my body (my shoulders were the next place it went) I go back to what they taught me. You may think it is a little hoodoo voodoo but it truly "cured" me. I realize it will not do that for everyone but it's worth a shot. The work is all through the mind and it is not easy- I felt tremendous guilt releasing a lot of what was causing me the pain but I now realize it's ok to feel the way I do. Nobody else has to know.
Now if only I could remember where I put my cell phone down! I think I get the majority of my steps in walking around the house looking for my personal or work phone ☹️
Take care of yourselves 💕

Started this yesterday morning, then life got in the way, lol….
Ginny - so happy you to hear from you. Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery.
Flea - another delicious looking plate. 😁 Hope you are feeling better.
Rebecca - what a beautiful painting. Your sis is the artist and you are a singer. Did your other sister have any talents or specialties?
Lisa and Heather - are you writing fiction or non-fiction?
Tracey - so glad you popped in. We know you are treading water with all the MIL stuff. Hope you are feeling better. (((HUGS)))
Heather - sorry to hear your boiler is on the blink, glad the plumber has been notified. Hope your new knee sleeve helps.
Melanie - shaking my head at those students who came to your ranch. Maybe their idea of being a vet is mainly giving kittens and puppies shots? I do wonder how many gals end up being large animal vets. I don't know of any in my area. Anyhow, have you and your DH decided you're done hosting students like this?
I remember Dr. Sarno's book, and he gave good advice. Happy you are doing so much better.
Rebecca - you are doing great on your weight loss. I get hard on myself for edging into the overweight category. Yet, according to the Smart BMI Calculator, I'm on target and it's acceptable to even gain a few pounds as the years go by. I can't remember your height, but you might be in the good range too. 😉
Calculate your BMI, correctly rated according to age and gender
Barbie - love the photo of Annie with her collection. Sometimes Rosie puts her assortment in a pile and lays there with her head on top of everything. It must be a rule the dog with the most stuff wins. 😁
Yesterday, Collette arrived and got this house spiffy for another 2 weeks. Then I zipped down to a neighboring town where an artist friend of mine, P, was working in a little art gallery. You card artists and crafters - Heather, Carla, Tracey, Rebecca - got me thinking…. the price of a birthday card at Wal-Mart, for example, can be over $5. Well, P sells an assortment of cards she has created - some pencil drawings, some watercolors for $5. So I stocked up and my plan is to send these cards - certainly frameable - to friends and relatives for birthdays. There won't be some catchy "Happy Birthday" greeting on the front, but that doesn't matter.
After I left that gallery, I decided to go to the feed store my friend K owns, and get a 5 gallon bucket bird seed. 21# for $12. They scoop what you want out of huge cloth totes that sit on pallets. 2# or 500#, whatever you need. Same with chicken feed. Anyhow, I took a back road to there instead of Hwy 12 toward White Pass (Flea is familiar with that exit off I-5 😁) What a beautiful drive. Huge fields with livestock - one had a large black bull - likely an Angus - reminded me of a likely scene at Melanie's ranch. It was sunny in spots, but Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier were hidden under cloud cover.
As I've mentioned before, K also owns that little country store grocery and diner about 3 miles from me. This year, on Thanksgiving, the diner is open from noon to 5, featuring a turkey meal for $15. The meal includes turkey, mashed potatoes/gravy/dressing, corn, pumpkin pie and a beverage. First come, first served. What a nice thing to do for folks in this area, many who are seniors and don't have family.
K said he's thinking of doing something similar on Christmas Day, but it's still early.
In other news, sounds like Mt. Rainier is getting active. Don't need a repeat of the ash fall that came with the Mt. St. Helens eruption, but I might pick up a couple air filters at the automotive store next time I'm in town. Just in case. If Rainier wants to wait 50 years before erupting, I'm all for that.

Carla, when your Freddie bakes potatoes in crockpot does he wrap them in foil?
Allie hope you get more support than just a walking rollator. Do you have someone who can advocate for you, who is coordinating your care with all your medicos? <3 Prayers for Doris.
Melanie thanks for the stunning aurora pics. Supposedly it got down as far south as here in Southern Oregon but either cloud cover or sleeping kept me from seeing. Did see them once in Boise, but only green, never pink/red. Peppermint oil, lights and radio on are keeping the mouse invasion out from the garage.
Debbie choc chips for fifty cents? Score!!!
Rebecca you are way more calm about the $17+ than I would be. Count me in your “to the penny” club. ;}
Carol I hate that you have to lose your number. Is it possible to ADD your name to the phone for now? Then later when you see your name on the account, you could send the death certificate with a request to remove his name…
Machka I wish Lanette would pick me up with the transporter so we could join you and Rowan at that pub…
Beth brava for keeping your exercise and food choice commitment. You inspire me to try again.
Heather love the fluffy cardigan, post a pic of you in it?
Lanette great news about the community response to the farm sanctuary’s call for help.
Lisa, Levi, oh my heart!
Washing hair, only Sunday before church. Comb through treatment, wind up and put in turban, dress for church. Halfway to church (a 35 min drive) remove turban, finger comb and let car heater air dry. A little wave in hair means soon as I comb it it turns into cotton candy. Yuck.
Strangers at the door. We have only one trail cam and it’s not hooked up. Dogs bark ferociously when cars turn off the lane onto our driveway. We can see the parking area through the gate that secures our yard. One time a man in a car drove up looking for “The johnsons” I yelled to him through the barely open slider that there was no one by that name in this neighborhood and I was having trouble holding the dogs back. He made a quick u-ie and sped away.
Thru pg 13, time to be up and about and maybe even do some PT exercises.
Later, lighter, lovelies!

Lanette-I'm writing a memoir of my years in Camden Town in the early 70s. Plus my old lady thoughts and meditations on such. Perspective, I suppose. Definitely older, maybe a bit wiser.
I'm feeling sympathy for my friend G. It looks as if her horrible bullous pemphigoid is coming back, now that she is lowering the steroids. She will have to increase them again, or take some other horrible drug. She is, quite understandably, fed up. Hard when you live alone.
My new knee sleeve is helping me with walking around the house. I haven't ventured out with it. It is very comfortable so far. Nice not to be in pain doing ordinary household tasks.

Heather - yes not a suprise! I've recently (for the time being) stopped buying packaged cookies.
- I can make them myself at home and control the ingredients as well as calories count per cookie.
- WHen I make them at home, I am less likely to want to eat 12 of them
- When I buy them in a package, somehow it seems like a single serving (#oreo's …just me?!?! Most likely many of us have had our share of a row).
So- I decided when we want cookies, I will bake cookies.
I baked a cake the other day. we decided after 1/2 of it, that we were tired of eating it. That's a good thing.
Sugar cookies or peanut butter cookies to be made for this weekend. maybe 1/2 and 1/2.
3 -
Lisa in Ar - Yeah - the cycle of "I have to eat food" is in my brain too.
With the sciatica I was in such deep pain that the eating noise was down. Then when I started to feel better, I knew I needed something to eat with the meds, so that i didn't feel sick. And now, we are tapering my pain meds to zero - I'm rather anxious about pain returning (thankfully day 1 it has not). All this to say, I need to stick to eating better/less also. A little of both. I am keeping exercises to a minimum until PT has cleared me for more. so mainly walking and PT. I'm just itching (kinda) to have a reason to do more of what I used to do….yet I'm also SUPER afraid to do any of it. I trust my body and I also have no trust with my body. Thru PT I am working on making little daily deposits of self trust.

Hello Tribe,
At work, I closed my rings all three days. I had the student with me this week. My one student was enough. I don't know how Melanie dealt with her three or four students who were different. With this student, she needed to know her math, especially with children and babies. When I am charting for my patient and handling her care, I look over and she seems bored. Then she helped someone else. She showed us pictures of her beautiful niece. I told her to chart her IV sites and assessment every 2 hours. I purchased a dosage calculation reference guide and cards to study from. I hope I didn't offend her. Anyway, I ended up getting off at 10:00 am, so I worked 15 hours, and I passed out all day Monday. I had to check her charting and tweak what she missed. It took me longer than I planned. She didn't document her Neuro or IVs. She didn't check the diaper or turn the patient. She is graduating soon, and I will need to teach her that documentation is essential to maintaining her license. I took her on a mini field trip to look at the various children's units in the hospital. There were two kids with their hearts exposed, covered with a membrane, and my friend Joe explained everything to her. She was impressed. She did ask an excellent question about why the most significant percentage of babies in our unit was African American.
We explained that it varies. 6 mos ago, we had caucasian trach babies. I explained that there is an issue with some young A.A. girls who do not get prenatal care, and those who do are overlooked when there are signs of pre-eclampsia. Then some self-medicate with drugs on the street, which can cause uterine rupture. There are social variants as well. Usually, girls of color have a higher survival rate than the Caucasian female, then the black male, then the Caucasian boy. The other races have an even lower percentage. I hope my gift was not insulting; I want her to succeed in whatever field of nursing she chooses.I went out with my friends last night and that was fun. DH is coming home for Thanksgiving, and we have a plan to have a family dinner, but I am cooking the turkey and dressing. Perhaps I will make a low-sugar dessert.
I am so ready for my nap. I will need to post more later.
Allie, I am worried about you. Please don't make me come out there.
Okie, great job on organizing. Your space looks great. I was hoping you would use the desk and the space for.
Nap time for me,
Mo in Mississippi
