Can anyone recommend a nice white wine for cooking? Preferably, not too expensive. Also, once the bottle is opened, it can be kept in the cupboard, right? Or, does it need to be refrigerated?

@chicbuc and @SparkSpringtime69 - I've been missing you both. I hope you both are doing OK! Take care friends!

I hope everyone is well and looking forward to this holiday week (for those who celebrate), some downtime, and good times spent with family and friends.
While I will be going to my DIL's mother's house on Thanksgiving, I do plan to cook on Friday and my son and the boys will come over. (DIL has to work).
Planning for a mostly AF week. Thanksgiving isn't a challenge. There won't be any libations at my DIL's mother's house, and the next day, I'll have play time with my grandkids…. Hopefully can jump start December and get on the right track.
@xbowhunter ~ great progress and the weight loss is amazing!
@WestCoastGirl_1 ~ you answered my question. Glad it was just one day and you're back on track and crushing it!
@Walela617 ~ I'm still procrastinating for Thanksgiving shopping, but I will go out today, for sure.
@tmbg1 ~ Looking good…
@GGinCA ~ As you noted, you're still under goal, that's a win!
@NonnieDoiron ~ I can't wait to celebrate you hitting your goal. ✅. I love a NOTHING day… glad you took one!
@Womona ~ I love how you are mastering the 'one and done'
@globalhiker ~ it's just generally BAD all around!!
@Michieb125 ~ Kudos on the reframing and NA choices. I'm ready to get into the holiday mentality. I always seemed rushed and before i know it, it's come and gone…taking it slower this year!!
@Unkd_Bubbles ~ Welcome to the discussion! Ooohh.. i forgot about the egg nog temptation. The good news for me is I can't drink much of it as it's just too rich!

Ugh slipped up the last week - not sure where my "to heck with it" mindset came from. Happy to get a couple dry days before Thanksgiving craziness…trying to figure out what my targets for the long weekend will be - historically it's a heavy weekend, would love to see some drops. Thinking ahead, want to see more dry days in December.

@itladyee That's great that you're having your own Thanksgiving on Friday. I would have never thought of it, but it's the perfect solution. I'm glad that I could answer your question. BTW…I see that you've set up December on the spreadsheet. Cool! A fresh start! I hope you can get a few AF days in before the big weekend and make progress with your goals in December!
I'm not white-knuckling it with the decision not to drink this Thanksgiving. I honestly don't want to drink this year. This will be the first time being AF on Thanksgiving that I can remember. And, as @2timesacharmmfp mentioned, that historically Thanksgiving weekend has always been a heavy weekend for me. I definitely won't miss that! You have no idea how many times I've cussed this state out for closing the liquor stores on Thanksgiving and Christmas. It makes no sense. People with drinking problems are forced to stock up. It just makes things worse. For some, including me, having alcohol in the house in the morning would lead to drinking early in the morning. Hey, if it's there! Afterall, it's a holiday weekend! 😳 It always ended up being five days of heavy drinking. With my tolerance, I could handle it. But, I can't say that I felt bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on Monday (just the opposite).
@2timesacharmmfp Good luck with your goals! I do know the dilemma.
Have a good day everyone!

Today and tomorrow are review presentation dry runs. Then, off for Thanksgiving. Then, traveling next week.
The husband is pulling some real winner moves lately.🙄 He admitted to being an *kitten* and apologized, but he’s not necessarily doing any better.
Been working on my afghan. I think I figured out what I’m going to do with the design now. I just have to figure out how to do it. 🤔

I'm thinking about just posting my stats a couple of times a week. Everybody is probably tired of reading the same thing daily 😕 But I will continue to check off my AF days on the spreadsheet.

@WestCoastGirl_1 for a cooking wine, I'd go with a medium bodied, lower acid pinot gris especially since you live in the land of pinot gris and you can likely get it very fresh and inexpensively. My favorite Oregon pinot gris to-date is Illahe 2022 and 2023 and what do with the leftover wine (I'd consume it) is refrigerate it and it's only good for a few days. So maybe get a small bottle and ditch the rest. There is also a cheap wine sold in some gas stations here for under $10 that I find pretty decent flavorwise - Black Oak pinot grigio.
I read to avoid oaky chardonnays and any wine with any particular strong flavor.
Sutter Home and Vendange and anything next to these on the shelf are not wine in my book and I would not dare cook with these.

@globalhiker Thanks for the suggestions. I will see what I can find. The wine selections at the grocery stores are almost intimidating. And, we do have some wineries in the area. I guess a little wine-tasting wouldn't hurt 😁 I once went wine-tasting in SoCal. A friend of mine and I were bored one Saturday. So, we decided to head for the wineries. The only catch is that you feel obligated to buy a bottle at every stop. And, neither of us were wine drinkers. Oh, well! It was a fun afternoon. Also, I never knew that wine had a shelf life after opening. Wow! I thought you just corked it and put it in the fridge. I have heard on the cooking shows that you should use something that you would enjoy drinking. It looks like I have my work set out for me.

@WestCoastGirl_1 cooking with wine is an art - I missed what you are going to use it for. Need a red or white?
I rarely cook with it, with the exception of a red wine for a good pot roast meal - makes for an excellent sauce with beef stock.Or, if I’m doing shrimp scampi or seafood sauté etc., the lighter whites like Pinot Grigio are all good (not Chardonnay). You can always buy a split bottle which is only 12 ounces and toss the rest. Good luck.

@Michieb125 Some of the recipes that call for white wine are seafood and pasta dishes. One is "Garlic Butter Shrimp Pasta" that I found online (it's like shrimp scampi). It is very quick and easy, but good. Another recipe we used to make years ago was "White Wine-Marinated Steak". It was a Cooking Light recipe. It actually seemed a bit elegant (we watched all the cooking shows and thought we were master chefs back then - LOL). I can see how a cook red wine would be good for pot roast. What red do you use? Again, I guess wines only last for a few days after opening. That's depressing! I thought about freezing it in ice cube trays. But, with alcohol in it, it wouldn't freeze.

Coming up on year 3 of being here and I’m so grateful for all your interesting discussions, and never ending support!
Thank goodness it’s a new week and I have new targets! My best intentions softened greatly on Sunday night when I was decorating one of my Christmas trees. Today I’m back on track and will skip wine tonight to get a good night sleep and have a clear head before my elderly mom arrives tomorrow (staying here). Always a tough one having her here for three days - getting old is so hard on her with her seasonal affect disorder diagnosis which means she has every ailment right now, including maybe needing a brain scan - oh Lordy help me. At least there’s a medical answer for the behavioral changes during the fall to winter months. She’s seeing her doctor on Monday - I’m thankful he knows her, and how to handle her for lack of a better word.
But, my holiday dinner shopping is done for this week. I need to get hubby in the action to help vacuum and clean bathrooms (he is a great help before company but I usually handle the inside according to our division of labor contract, lol). I’m brining a small turkey and will slather it with fresh herbs and butter…..and a spiral sliced glazed ham. Tons of side dishes which we always say we don’t need but my DS likes one thing and DD likes the other. So I end up making them all for traditions sake.
All the yummy mocktails are covered and I purchased one bottle of Chardonnay and one favorite Meomi Pinot Noir. I think the best part of being on this journey for 3 years now is that “I don’t want to” or “need to” go overboard on holidays anymore! I am serving the NA Prosecco with an appetizer and waiting until dinner for any wine. This year I am focusing on my precious family, good friends, and all the good stuff in my little world.
Wishing everyone a happy, healthy LA week ahead whatever your plans.
We are all right where we are supposed to be on this path.
May you find your best resolve and stay safe and mindful! 🦃🍂🍁🦃🍂🍁🦃🍂🍁5 -
Last week didn’t go quite the way I hoped in terms of staying AF. I’m expecting two A days this week, Thanksgiving, and possibly one more if we end up doing a wine-tasting trip. Our Thanksgiving guest is staying over, so that extra day feels pretty likely.
But honestly, the bigger thing on my mind has been this gut feeling I couldn’t shake. For about a week, I’ve had this nagging sense that my niece and sister-in-law, who usually handle about 85% of the Thanksgiving cooking, might cancel. I kept urging my husband to reach out to his sister, just to check in.
And yesterday we got the confirmation I’d been expecting: they won’t be coming this year. My niece is dealing with extreme anxiety, and they’re choosing to stay home.
It definitely throws a wrench into our holiday plans. It’s hard not to feel a little deflated when long-standing traditions suddenly shift. At the same time, I just hope things get better for her soon. Anxiety can be overwhelming, especially around the holidays. Part of me is still hoping they might change their minds, but if not, we’ll adjust and make the best of it.

@Michieb125 I just noticed your comment about a split bottle. I haven't shopped for wines in many years. So I'll have to see what they have. I hate to toss what I don't use. But, I'm really not a wine drinker. And, if I drank a glass of wine, I'd probably want a half-pint of whiskey afterwards. But, then again, I don't cook with wine often, so I guess it would be OK.
I'm not super hard-core with being AF. I feel it's best for me to avoid drinking, for the most part, for about 90 days to give my body a chance to reset and to lose some weight. I've already lost 17 lbs since the beginning of October when I started cutting back. I'd like to refrain (with an occasional exception) until I get to a weight that I'm comfortable with. After that, if I do drink from time to time, I don't want to plan my A days. If I feel like drinking, I will. If I don't, I won't. And, it can't be more than 2 days a week while starting later in the day and drinking less. Otherwise, I will gain the weight right back. I've experienced that before. But, when I start gaining it back, I don't notice until it's too late! Usually, I don't notice until it's about winter and my jackets no longer fit! Ugh!
Have a nice day everyone!

I Googled, "Can you can freeze wine". And, the answer is "Yes". You can freeze it in ice cube trays. It said to cover the trays with plastic wrap so the wine doesn't absorb odors. Freeze for at least 4 to 5 hours and place the cubes in a freezer bag. Not only would this be good for saving wine for cooking, but you could use the cubes in your wine if you like your wine chilled.

Happy Thanksgiving to All of You! I have 3 rules to follow for me today:
1-Exercise 2x as much (earn my pie calories for tomorrow)
2-Start the cleaning and cooking prep now so Thanksgiving day is relaxing and enjoyable as it should be
3-No drinking or sampling the wine I'll buy later for Thursday

Hello everyone!
Spent today preparing for tomorrow. I have a few items that have to be cooked same day, but everything else is just waiting for its turn in the oven tomorrow. We will have a total of 13 to feed, but I probably cooked for 40 like I always do. 🤣🤣
I wore my sneakers, and I can already tell that my feet, knees, and back won’t hurt tomorrow. YAY!!
I hope everyone has a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving!

@Michieb125 sounds like you are dealing with a lot with family. I have had to get more “involved” (aka: be the parent) in my mom’s life these past few years and it is very taxing. I hope you get help around the house to make things a little easier on you.
@globalhiker I love that you have a very specific plan. That’s key to success!
@NonnieDoiron those other twelve people are lucky to have you cooking for them. I hope you have fun and am glad you wore the sneaks to prep.
@BurnMode05 sorry to hear about the cancelled plans, but hopefully you can still enjoy the tradition.
My November is not going exactly as I had hoped but is probably still better than the last two years. I had set a goal of no more than five A days and so far have have had six, and do expect more with Thanksgiving if I’m honest. Current streak through last night is three days.
Still, when I look at it as 19 NA days this month so far that is good!Happy Thanksgiving all, we will get through the holidays together. I am thankful for this support group. 😊

I was tempted late this afternoon to get something to drink. I was thinking the liquor store will be closed tomorrow. So, I almost got something for tonight and tomorrow. But, the more I thought about it, I decided that was not a good idea. I would start drinking early tomorrow and my day would be ruined. It is now after 7 pm…the liquor store is closed now and will be tomorrow also. I'm glad I was sensible. I really dodged a bullet 😧
@BurnMode05 I'm sorry to hear that your Thanksgiving plans were cancelled. Have they changed their mind about coming? If not, I'm sure you'll make the best of it.
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow!

BurnMode05 so what are your dinner plans now that 85% of your meal isn’t going to be there? I would probably grill burgers or something! Pasta always works. That stinks about your niece having such bad anxiety.
After a number of days AF, I had two drinks on Sunday, and was SO DEPRESSED on Monday! I never equated drinking with depression but as I’m getting older, I notice it. Meanwhile, I had two drinks each Tuesday and Wednesday and was fine. Very weird.
I am hosting, but since I don’t have houseguests this year, my stress is WAY down! My new bathroom is done except for punch list items, my house is clean, and the little bit that needs to be done before we cook isn’t overwhelming. Yay! This is huge. Starting the day walking a 5K so it’s a good healthy start.
Know what else is huge? At work on Monday, all of a sudden the office got super busy with patients coming in all at once, and the noisiest I have ever heard. I had to go outside for a moment just get some silence. This all happened at “wine witching hour” and all I could think is how much I needed a drink and couldn’t wait to get home to pour myself a big glass of wine. Well, the office eventually settled down, and the feeling passed. I didn’t drink that night! I’m taking the W.
May you all have a blessed Thanksgiving , and a fantastic start to the holiday season. May we all gracefully deal with family drama. May we all stick to our goals. May our teams win. May our turkeys be moist and the skin crispy. May we all stop to remember all that we are truly thankful for.
I am so thankful for this group, and all of the support I’ve received over the years. We may be internet strangers, but it feels a lot more like friends. You guys are the best.

@Womona Your suggestion to @BurnMode05 was good…grilled burgers or pasta. It doesn't have to be turkey or ham. We decided not to cook this year because neither of us have much family left…I only have a brother left. We're close but he lives in Las Vegas and it's not easy for us to get together. My brother is cooking the traditional Thanksgiving meal this year. It's just he and his SO. Her grown kids will be there for Christmas and he said they are going to make lasagna. I think I'll make my mom's lasagna for Christmas too. I can make that the day before and cook it whenever we want.
I was really happy when I woke up. I was glad that I didn't go to the liquor store last night. I was still debating after 6 pm. I said to my husband that I didn't know if I wanted to go to the store or not. He said, "You've been doing so good without, I don't know!". Anyways, I'm happy that I didn't. I slept really good (in fact, I slept in a bit 😀). And, I'm also glad that I don't have to cook. I'll have to think of something else to cook on Thanksgiving.
You said it well…
