Okay so I just checked in on my nutrition goals; if I stay on track, I will weigh 5 pounds less by my birthday (Nov 16.) I feel like I haven't lost anything in a while. But to be honest, I don't FEEL skinnier, so I'm afraid of getting on the scale to confirm how I feel. I know I can also check my measurements and see if they're any different, but I'm afraid that my physical activity hasn't been consistent enough. I'm a weekend warrior; big burns on weekends and minimal during the week. This is so hard!!!! I want my major lifestyle changes to be in the KITCHEN and not the gym. I'll never get the results I want without changing my nutrition. I guess I let myself off the hook since I have gluten issues, and was recently "glutened," so I blame my stagnation on malabsorption. I've been logging everything, and usually getting close to my goal, so I still have overall been below my maintenance calories, and should see SOME changes. I need a few people to offer me some constructive criticism. Thanks friends!

Oh yeah, I'm 5'10 and my maintenance calories are 2100. I'm currently on 1 pound a week so 1570 a day. I've been eating most of my exercise calories since I drink that Koolaid on MFP.

P.S. My own weaknesses:
1. fruit! I love fruit! I've been lurking around the paleo lifestyle, but don't think I could give up fruit. I tried last week and found ways to compensate with plain yogurt/honey.
2. I LOVE to cook. I have a BF who LOVES to eat, and it's normal and enjoyable for me to cook elaborate food every night. Slicing/stirring/cooking is my stress-release.

You don't have to give up fruit on Paleo!!! It's just easier to lose weight if you limit your fruit (and carbs). But give them up? That's crazy talk girl :)

I've actually had more fun cooking now that I've gone Primal (I still eat limited dairy). There are a TON of Paleo blogs/books with recipes that are fantastic. And it's really fun to experiment with different veggies and meats. I also use a lot of coconut flour and almond flour to bake. It forces me to be extra creative, and it actually forces me to cook more!

If you love to cook, then you definitely have a leg up over those of us who aren't sure which box in the kitchen is the oven and which is the microwave... Seriously, that's great because there are a LOT of things you won't be able to eat ready-made, you'll have to prepare them yourself.

Whether you decide to go paleo / primal or not, I would definitely check those recipe sites & forums because they usually feature recipes that are gluten-free or can be easily adapted to gluten-free.

Personally, I am not paleo per se, but my diet resembles theirs because my doctor has me on going extremely low-carb due to hyperinsulinemia. Doing the low-carb thing has helped me to lose weight for the first time in my life, so if you're trying to lose weight *and* be gluten-free, this might be the perfect thing for you.

I can't eat much fruit, but I've found that flavored protein powders, or even crystal light drink mix mixed into plain Greek yogurt, can satisfy those sugar cravings. I've also had some limited success with using flavored protein powders to make pancakes and cheesecake (still workin' on that, I was never a good cook even *before* my diagnosis :blushing: ).

If you can, check out the documentaries "Fat Head" and "My Big Fat Diet," and I do encourage you to look into paleo / primal sites too. http://www.marksdailyapple.com is pretty awesome.

    Good luck to you!
  • My mom has ciliacs and she is struggling to lose weight as well. Her biggest problem is making excuses as well. She says "well, I can't have breads and pastas and so much more that I am going to over eat on the things that I can" Well stop. If you like to cook you have a great advantage. Get some healthy cooking books. Biggest Loser has about 5 out that are great and simple Weight Watchers has a great selection that offers more complex recipes. You may have to switch some things out but that will add some adventure to your kitchen. I do the same. I don't eat any red meat and I have to cut out carbs as much as possible so I substitute or add my own flavor. Cutting out the gluetin should make things easier but the things you substitute with can be higher in carbs and cause just as much a problem. However after studying some healthy recipes and what the better substitutes are you will be making your own creations in no time. Don't make excuses that because you have this than you can make up for it by over doing it somewhere else. Let the celiac work for you instead of agaisnt you. Fruit is good but all things in moderation. Use your celiac to help you It's a part of you forever so use it for it's benefits intstead of it's down falls. Good luck. You can Do this. Get some of those books start a new relationship with cooking healthy and fresh than share with the rest of us your creations!

I just checked out some recipes on a Paleo site. They looked really good. I am going to try it. Thanks.
  • Help!

I am 'gluten intolerant' we think so I'm not having any pasta, bread, etc. and find that alot of other products have gluten in and it's so difficult, tried the alternative breads etc but they're horrid!

I'm also STILL so bloated and I'm going to an award ceremony Friday night - has anyone ideas on how I can get my tummy flat not so bloated? Drinking loads of water, fruit, etc. nothing works :-(......
  • I'm starting to wonder if it's beacuse I'm eating too much fruit and drinking too much water??

    Spaghetti Squash is awesome.

And check out this website: elanaspantry.com - it's not exactly all diet friendly, but there are some awesome grain free treats for special occasions! Her Paleo bread is actually really good!

If you are trying to get rid of bloat, try limiting your carbs and sodium intake and be sure to drink plenty of water!

We just found out my daughter has a gluten interopathy also. In addition, she is allergic to tree nuts (including coconut) and we think she also may have some dairy issues (lucky thing she is not a milk/cheese fan). We have found some really great baking mixes (for pancakes/waffles/biscuits/etc.) so don't give up. Chloe is finding all kinds of things that she likes that we did not even know existed. She is also getting used to different textures and tastes of breads and cereals. It is just a matter of rethinking your "likes" and retraining your taste buds.
  • Hi, thanks so much I just feel really fed up as I've drank 10 glasses of water today been really good....I'm starving and seriously do look 9 months pregnant.....I might change and have cereal for breakfast tomorrow instead of fruit, just need to go to the supermarket see what I can have the only problem is that often the gluten free is also high in calories bacause of the nuts etc..............not sure what to try next ...
  • Hope you're daughter gets on alright, what a shame.....there are lots out there for her to try though.... thanks for the advice :-)

Udi's has a wonderful gluten free sandwich bread i cant even tell the difference. You may want to look into some probiotics to ease some tummy issues (highly suggested for people with gi issues). I also keep PhaZyme on hand it helps with gas and bloating and works wonders for me. Keep in mind there are over 300 alternative words for gluten so its possible you may be getting it in somewhere. If i were you i would go eat only fruits, veggies and meats for a week. Dont consume anything that didnt grow from the ground or at one point had a heart beat. slowly add food back to your diet but limit yourself to 2-3 items per week giving a day inbetween to assess bowel function on symptoms

Week 1-fruit, veggie, meat and dairy
Week 2- all the items above on monday eat rice (assess symptoms if any), wednesday try a new gluten free product-maybe a sandwich bread (assess symptoms if any) friday try a new food item-oatmeal (assess symptoms if any) .

If all goes well continue to add food items and products every week. doing so slowly will give you the ability to pinpoint what is causing your symptoms.
