I run a low carb diet either 6 days with 1 day "refeed" or 12 days with 2 days "refeed". I take the ketosis approach, 12 days in keto and 1 day refeeding and restoring where I eat whatever I want. There are tons of things to eat on low carb diets, just have to watch out for those "low carb" advertised things, especially if your body doesn't handle sugar alcohols. I can eat all the low carb candy I want, and still stay in ketosis, my wife looks at one piece of candy and gets knocked out. She's dropped around 20lbs so far doing things this way, I'm down 50 in 4 months, but that's with heavy cheat days and 300-400 grams protein + heavy lifting.

A few years ago I lost about 35lbs on Atkins and kept it off for years. 2 years ago I started slowly putting it back til I had 20 of it back. I tried to do the Atkins again but just could not.

I started here on MFP a few months ago determined to just learn to eat properly. I have now lost that 20 lbs and am looking to loose another 10 this time.

Looking back at my Atkins experience I honestly do NOT think that the low carb thing really mattered. I lost the weight then and now because of the simple truth: Eat Less + Move More = Lower Weight.

I encourage you to forget the fad diet and just learn to eat a proper diet. Let the weight come off slowly and learn a healthier way of living.

NOTE: One thing that Atkins did help me with was breaking my addiction to sweets. If that is what you need to do, do the Atkins 20 carbs per day for 2 weeks and then eat the food pyramid and be healthy.

Good job!! I am looking for a "Like" button for you mate!!
  • I've done low carb all my life, because my family eat this way and when I moved out to Uni 2 years ago I saw no reason to want or crave carbs! I still eat them, but very, very occasionally and never in the form of bread or pasta - the only 'carb' based dinners I do have will be cous-cous salad, or wheatberries and lentils, or EXTREMELY occasionally udon noodles. I also have ryvitas as snacks, but never more than 2 per day.

Low carb makes me feel great; for a few weeks in my Freshers year I ate the same as everyone else in my flat for ease of cooking - things such as sandwiches, pasta, burgers, curry and rice - and felt so sluggish, ill and bloated that I never want to eat that way again. You definitely don't feel hungry on low/no carbs, as you eat enough quantity of things that are more suitable to being digested in a comfortable way.

Good luck, you'll never go back! :)

I try to keep my carbs lower than avg - a LOT on MFP are low carbers! I mostly try to keep around 30% and no refined carbs.
  • Wow!! Thanks for all the great responses!!! I have lost 16 so far, eating less carbs but still having some in the form of beans or whole wheat tortilla for a fajita etc. Exercise and smaller portions of whatever I'm eating has worked for me so far. I have in my head that "all things are permissable, but not all things are beneficial" so I am able to see food as fuel and not as any kind of temptation for that forbidden food. BUT I have read tons of research on the benefits of low carb eating and was looking for some of your thoughts!! Thanks again for the replys!! AND if any of you want to be friends, please add me!!
  • Wow!! That is awesome!!!! So proud of you, you're almost there!!!!!

I am doing moderately low carb. I have oatmeal almost every day and up to 2 servings a day of either 1/4 cup rice, 1/4 cup black beans, or 3oz of sweet potato. I'm down 5+ pounds in 3 weeks (I weigh in again today). I have swapped out grated squash and tofu noodles for pasta, and cauliflower for potatoes. I just stay away from bread. I have traded vinegary snacks (pickled veggies YUM) for sweets.

Here's something though: I weighed in at 158 on 6/27. 6 weeks later, after working out hard and watching calories closely, I weighed in at 164 on 9/19. My trainer thinks I'm allergic to sugar or wheat, my nutritionist thinks it's a sugar, wheat, or dairy intolerance, and my doctor thinks I'm just 31 years old and holding on to weight and need to work harder. The thing *nobody* is talking about, and which I just put together last night, is I was low-carbing Atkins induction-style for 2 weeks prior to my 6/26 weight; as soon as I reintroduced carbs, I gained at a rate of nearly a pound a week even at 1200 calories.

My point being, strict low carb works well for me, but only if I make the decision to never go back to "regular" eating, because as soon as I reintroduce carbs I blow up like a balloon! So for now, I'm sticking to 100 grams of carbs and no sugar. That I can manage for life, as long as I get the occasional day off for cake!
  • I do extreme low carb in the form of keto - try to keep my carbs under 20g/day. It's been tough, but I broke my carb addiction and I eat a lot healthier. There are way more veggies in my diet than there ever have been before. At 20g it's kind of restrictive - it can be hard eating out, and sometimes I have trouble devising a menu that isn't completely boring. Some people on this forum are completely against it, but you know, it works for a lot of people, especially ones that are sensitive to carbs. Some people feel way more energetic and feel way better than they ever did eating carbs.

It's definitely a lifestyle change though - not a diet. Once you cut carbs to low levels, you become more sensitive to them, and you can gain a lot of weight back if you ever go back to eating them unchecked. But all diets should be healthy and should be approached from a lifestyle point of view - otherwise what's the point in changing at all? You'll just gain it back regardless.

    OOOO i like this idea!

    Can I join you?
I recently found out that I have high triglycerides and I am guessing its because I eat a lot of carbs (my favorite foods include rice and pasta, YIKES!) I am trying to cut them down but if I had someone to bounce recepies back and fourth with that'd be pretty sweet
