Calculating calories burned - handbell ringing

My handbell group is back in session and I've been doing quite a bit of research trying to figure out the burn from this.

Bells are a percussion instrument, have to be lifted and swung, held for the entire piece, and the entire practice is down standing up. We always get very warmed up and often are breaking a sweat. We practice for an hour and 15 minutes once a week plus play on some Sundays.

The closest I have been able to find as an activity that might be similar is drumming, but not a full body workout from a drum set but closer to a bongo drummer at a slower rate.

Any suggestions?
Thanks!

  • Don't know about calorie burn but if you are ringing the big bells you have a great upper body workout going on that is for sure! Loved my time with a handbell choir!!! Enjoy!

Not sure how heavy they are, but it might be similar to kettlebells. Just not as heavy. I hear kettlebells are great workouts.
  • *bump* just to see if anyone else has any input. Thanks!
  • I needed this information, myself, as my handbell group's season has started up again, as well. And I'm proud to say I found the information.

A 150 pound person will burn 114 calories an hour ringing the handbells.
