Brisk walking pace?

what is considered a good time in minutes per mile for a fast paced walk?

    On MFP, they say 3.5mph is considered a "brisk" pace. It's definitely different for everyone. I'm 5' tall & short legs, so what is brisk for me is going to be pretty slow for a guy who's a foot taller..

    I run a lot of miles 50+ per week (and I'm pretty fast for a slow guy).

    When I walk, I have to work hard to cover a mile in 15 minutes. I consider 4 mph very brisk. 3 mph (20:00 minute miles) a moderate pace. 3.5 mph = ~ 18:00 miles which is what I usually walk at.

    For me, I can't do 12:00 minute miles without jogging/running. I know some people can walk that fast, but then again there are lots of people who cant run that fast.

    I think it's all about the perceived exertion - everyone's pace and stride is different.
    10 being the highest which you wouldn't be able to hold for more than a 30-60seconds without jogging, and 1 being a stroll while window shopping. When I can't run, I walk briskly at an effort of 7-8 - this get's my heart rate up almost as high as my 10-12 min/mile runs. I can maintain this pace for as long as I can run and be drenched in sweat afterwards.

    So just walk with an effort of 7-8 and it will definitely be a brisk-fast-paced walk :smile:
  • I keep to only a 3.5 to 4 mph pace but I try to do much of it uphill or at an 8 or 9 incline on a treadmill.

    3.5 seems really brisk to me and I'm 5'6" - perhaps my legs or my stride is short. I usually log the 3.0 even tho what I really do is 3.3 with 4% incline because there's currently no way to factor in everything I wish I could, such as height, weight, age, heart rate, etc. and even if I could my heart medicine keeps my heart around 90bmp while walking at that pace, which would be misleading as to my effort.

    It's just not perfect - but I only eat back about half of my exercise calories anyways because I'm still less than halfway to goal. When I get on the lower half, I might start doing that to slow things down and make sure I can transition to maintenance without a lot of problems.
