So my friend is coming over who is living abroad so the girls are going out to dinenr tonight. i know we are going to an italian but I can't get the menu or any nutrition facts (they don't do that where I live) online. Any tips on what to steer clear of and what might be good choices?

Heya!
i think pasta is really healthy, just watch the portion sizes! Thin crust pizza is also great - good italian places don't drown it with oil like the takeaways do.
and lean chicken and vegetables are always good

Minimize the "damage" by avoiding cheese, sausage, and cream or alfredo sauce. When your dinner comes, divide your meal in half and push half of it to the side and DON'T touch it (or have the server box it right away). Have salad dressing on the side. And avoid the bread basket and dessert.0

Try asking them to substitue the regular pasta for whole wheat (most places will now a days) Also, try a appetizer like bruschetta. It's filling and has lots of great veggies.0

Salad with dressing on the side or maybe a cup of minestrone soup is a nice starter (plus soup is very filling)...or get a big salad that has grilled chicken and other veggies with dressing on the side as your meal.
Or, pasta primavera (veggies) is a nice choice or pasta with just a red marinara or mushroom marinara sauce is good too as long as you watch the portions.0 -
cut out the bread before. Have a salad instead (try to use a vinagar based dressing instead of an oil or cream based), Get your pasta portion in a second dish instead of with the main dish (they tend to give less if they do that) And make sure any meat is baked or broiled. Avoide breading if possible (breading tends to mean they will be baking it in heaps of butter or frying it in oil).
Ahh, lets see, marinara sauces are better then cream sauces.
If they serve large portions (like many italian places do), you can ask them if they can make smaller portions, many places will do that for you.0
