Gas and weight gain!!!

Hey MFP. I was going to ask this on my profile, but I need answers right away. I have been dieting for almost 3 months now, and I have lost 9 lbs. This past weekend, I didn't exercise because I was going to be really busy. However, I decided to cheat this past weekend and get back on the ball this week. I figured that I would have gained about 2 or 3 lbs but I got on the scale today and it said that I gained 7 lbs back! I cried like a baby! Also, for the past few days, I have had gas and having a bloated feeling. Has this happened to you? Did I really gain 7 lbs over a 3 day period? I have been really worried about this all day and I need some motivation. If I did gain 7 lbs then, I really need to just start all over again.

Unless you ate close to 25,000 calories over your BMR, then, no, it's not 7 lbs of fat. You probably ate things VERY high in sodium and didn't drink enough water to combat it. Try to drink at least 15 glasses of water for the next couple days and you should see improvement. Also, foods that are high in water such as watermelon, cucumbers soups, etc. will help tremendously! Try to limit your sodium intake to 2400mg per day and watch it like a hawk because if you go over, you will gain water weight. All it is is your body is literally bloated. You'll be fine! :happy:0

well if youre bloated could be more water weight than anything, get back on track.....its never to late!0

I get bloated around that time of the month. I retain more water then, too, and the scale can show as much as five pounds more. (I won't weigh myself around my period.) Maybe that's it...0

Stay on board and see how you are at the end of next week. I have gained 5 overnight from not enough water and too much sodium the day before. Drink lots of water and stay under your goal for a few days. I can't offer any other advice because your diiary is private.0

Unless you ate everything in your path this weekend then I would guess you didn't really gain 7 pounds, but you are retaining water. Did you eat foods with alot of salt and sugar in them? I wasn't aware that sugar makes you retain just as much water as salt until I joined MFP. My suggestion would be to drink ALOT of water (flush your system) and exercise while eating healthy. It may take a couple of days to get it out of your system but I bet you will see the pounds shed quickly. :flowerforyou: Don't give up...just a lesson learned, you can do this!0

I had this same thing happen to me! I was 186 on Friday, I was 197 on Sunday (WTF, right???), and now, I'm down to 194. Not sure that I really ate stuff that was that high in sodium, but maybe I didn't drink enough water? I was sure I did! I'm also very bloated and icky feeling, as well!!!!0

sure, it happens all the time!!!
just get back into healthy eating, & it will come off.
alot of it may be water from too much sodium over the weekend.
& the bloating & gas, well, certain foods do that to me too. (like too much sugar, or broccoli, bananas, anything high in fat, etc.)
~it will go away after your body gets used to eating better again.
dont cry. youve been working so hard.
just flush your system with extra water & it will be ok.0 -
As for the gas, well that could be too much fiber. Beef also makes me bloat because my system is used to chicken, turkey and fish. How much water have you been drinking?
As far as the weight gain, you may have gained a few points, but I am certain that a few of those pounds have to be water.0 -
This happens to me every few weeks, esp. when I've had a couple of days of higher sodium intake, more processed food and less fiber than usual or a difference in my daily routine due to travel, sitting in trainings, etc.. This last time it took over 1.5 weeks to get my weight back to the real level.
The main thing to keep in mind is that unless you actually ate that many more calories, whatever you've gained is water, food making its way through your digestive system, etc. , not actual permanent weight.0 -
Hey there, don't be down on yourself and don't let it hinder you from moving forward. This happens to me all the time. I notice weight gain like that from eating too much fiber and or too much sodium. It always tends to fall off within a couple of days. My weight also goes up when I'm about to start my cycle so it's a lot of things that can contribute to the gain. However I wouldn't worry about it being permanent. The main thing is to get back on track and stay positive you can and will do this. We can and will do it together. I feel for you because if you're anything like me it's all you can think about. I totally understand, but rest assured that it'll pass. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Have a good night.0

Starches can pick up a lot of water, and certain ones can be difficult to digest. You may have eliminated them from your "normal" diet and so now are really seeing what they do to you. Gas indicates that a food cannot be adequately broken down. Your digestive tract doesn't have the enzymes to fully break it down. I find that heavy cereals and starchy vegetables cause the same problem for me: corn, beans of any kind, certain cereals, and even too much sugar.
Don't worry about the temporary gain -- I make it a habit to NEVER weigh in for a couple of days after a vacation or cheat weekend. I just get back on track and weigh-in a few days later. The results are much better then.
Good luck!0
