I asked a nurse if you retain water on your period as I never loose much weight when I am on period. She said it was complete rubbish. Your thoughts ?

You need a new nurse.0

True. I will take extra care to not eat any processed foods and drink extra water during my period and I still notice that it becomes hard to put on and take off my wedding ring. Not to mention the fact that I will gain 2-5 pounds. If that isn't due to retained water then we as women have some serious health issues about once a month.0

lol @ your nurseYou need a new nurse.
agree to ^0 -
You need a new nurse.0

I have recorded as much as a 5 pound weight gain directly related to my period for more than 15 years... Even at my fittest!0

You really need a new nurse. I have that same issue right before and during my period.0 -
i think she is rubbish!0
-
you definitely retain fluid!!!!!0
-
Oh man, I was going to weigh myself at the gym tonight...guess who's NOT doing that anymore? lol0
-
the nurse wants sacking if she doesn't know that! maybe she doesn't retain extra water. I used to bloat and go up by 6lbs but sometimes only drop 2 lbs after.. since going gluten free/low carb I don't bloat as much my last monthlies my tummy stayed soft throughout and it s lightest I've ever been at my monthlies.
How much carbs you eat can also affect your water retention in general too and most women get cravings at that time of the month and tend to eat more carbs which adds to the effect!0 -
AGREED! I ALWAYS RETAIN FLUID!1
-
I never really noticed it physically myself but, since checking my numbers weekly for the last year, I've noticed a spike the week before in hydration, body fat and muscle proportion - sadly, I never see a drop in weight the following week!0
-
If you hadn't specified gender, I would have asked you if that was a male nurse! I always skip logging my weight during my TOM because I know it's going to be higher and I don't want that to depress me.0
-
Oh my gosh! SERIOUSLY!? My wine bag turns into a kegger during my TOTM. I skip the scales completely. I did weigh myself once and it was a +8lb gain! Gargggg!!!!!!!! Give me meat n 2 veg anyday please.0
-
LOL That nurse is rubberish...I gain between 3 to 5 pounds1
-
I've always gained/retained. In recent months, I've noticed that I don't lose much during the month before and my weigh in after is usually my biggest drop. I expect that I'm losing real weight all along but I stay even instead of my previous gain.0
-
that nurse is a moron!!! I retain more water than the Hoover Dam!!!0
-
Ever since I can remember I gain 3 lbs during TOM. That's how I know it's coming!0
-
Silly nurse!! I weighed myself Monday just to see how much TOM affected my weight and I put on 8 lbs overnight, in a calorie defecit.0

I know I'm a guy, and as such should not be in this thread.
But, OP, THANK YOU for not calling it bloody TOM! We agreed ages ago not to call it TOM, as it's offensive to all the Toms out there!
At least, i think that was the outcome. Hard to remember much past the Vampire Hankies post.... =/0 -
Whoops. I entered the wrong thread. Sorry.
I thought this was a discussion on punctuation.
***leaves room***1 -
Evidently that nurse forgot to read the memo...
of COURSE you can retain water with TOM.... Id like to see that nurse demonstrate how freakin' easy it is to get into the same pair of pants when she is 'due' and how easy it is to take her dang rings off! LOL!!!
What an idiot! Yeah, drop that nurse quick!0 -
lol... Good one! :laugh:0
-
I was +5 lbs this a.m. as a testimonial against what your nurse said.0
-
I like shark week just because it's hilarious.0

one you need a new Nurse because you do retain water little extra for you all to know
Woman's Day Magazine reports that for the week before your period, your body will require 100 to 300 more calories a day. While it is tempting to think of these as free calories, still make healthy food selections such as fruits and vegetables from which to take those calories.

I am the same way.
When t.o.m. hits My clothing doesn't fit right anymore, bloating and more.
You really should get a new nurse, or ask her how long she has been in the field! That is ridicules. Was she a nurse at a regular doctors office or at a OBGYN? And was she a he? Because a good percentage of females to experience a chance when periods hit. I hope you can get yourself a new nurse, make sure when you go into your doctor let them know the mistake the nurse made so they can handle it. They don't want people in their office giving incorrect advice, it could lead down the wrong path if told to the wrong person.0 -
I def feel way more bloated in the days prior to. My cravings for sweets is also ridiculous. I wouldn't doubt that there is some actual weight gain becuase of the foods I sometimes give in to.
Does anyone know if hormonal birth controls (i.e. the pill) affect this weight cycle at all? and how?0 -
Agreed with what most people said... you definitely do weigh more from the water. However if you work out enough, your periods will become lighter, shorter, and less frequent!0

About a week before your period, fatigue, cravings, breast tenderness and bloating get into full swing. In fact, water retention could cause a 3- to 5-pound gain. Cutting back on salt (it makes you retain water) and doing moderate exercise (which helps increase the production of feel-good endorphins) can ease symptoms, says Diana Taylor, RNP, PhD, director of the PMS Symptom Management Program at the University of California, San Francisco.
