4 wks in and VERY sluggish bowels

Sorry to get gross... but I'm desperate for answers..... I'm eating a high fiber/high protein diet and just added flax seed 3 days ago as I prepare for gastric bypas. I've had virtually NO movements.. I'm drinking lots of decaf green tea and water. Normal amounts of exercise - but nothing sweat induced. I feel bloated but not in pain. I've called my nutritionist, but she's on vacation.
Is there an OTC that would bring quick results? HELP!!!:frown:

Have you tried prune juice? I dunno - 4 days is a lot.0

Prunes or prune juice!! You might also try a spoonful of mineral or cod liver oil. Nasty tasting stuff but it is a good stool softener.0

How is your water, even with the extra fiber it must have lots of water.
Otherwise I would check with the Dr.
Also, how are you getting the fiber? Try Benefiber....

Vitamin C. 4-6000mg will likely loosen you up. Just drink plenty of water as it can upset your stomach.0

Fiber One cereal works for me. The one that looks more like Frosted Flakes...not the sticks and twigs one!0

Traditional Medicinals makes a gentle laxative tea called Smooth Move. You drink it in the evening and it does help - a little goes a long way!0

Lactulose is what they gave me in hospital and it was gentle, worked in two days and is certainly OTC in the UK. I also swear by sweetcorn and also "real coffee" but I know everyone is different. Fruit and vegetable fibre are the fibres to concentrate on for a good bulk.0

try senna tea its natural, or magnesium which is natural.0

There is a a Colon Cleanse supplment called "Colopril" that produces the most beautiful BMs you can imagine. Very gentle.0

To much fiber can have a reverse effect of what you are looking for (been there). Try some prune juice or if you want to go OTC try Colace. There are two different kinds, but the origional will get you moving quickly. (It was what I was given after my c-section). Good luck, I know it is miserable. Oh! There is also a tea you can get at the grocery store called "Smooth Move", but make sure you follow the directions to a T or you will be in the bathroom, in pain, for quite awhile.0

eat a box of quaker cereal cinnimon oatmeal squares you'll be pooping your brains out. you can trust this advice because its happened to me.0

i've tried everything. sometimes i go 4 days without "going". the only thing that works for me is if i eat prunes every day. :sick:0

Peaches... but to be honest with you... you may be doing too much and stress is a main factor for tense bowels... relax0

OK, great ideas - here's answers to a few questions...
Very few and small eliminations for 4 wks now.
No to prunes, prune juice, but yes to lots water, flax seed, lots broccoli, fruit and high fiber cereal.
Thanks for the OTC products. Will look over what is there, looks like there's some good ones.

This is a very common ailment for people that have gone on a very low fat diet. If your fat intake drops too low, you don't have enough in your system to push things through. Check your fat levels in your diary, and if necessary, think about increasing your fat intake.
