This food database has nearly everything. If you have some idea of what people might be bringing, look for it in the db and the portion amount.

Take something healthy so you can eat it if nothing else is diet friendly. A lot of potlucks have casseroles and things that are hard to know even what is in them. I also have a potluck this weekend. In the past I have taken things like Asparagus, Soup, baked chicken, veggie trays, and low fat desserts such as sliced fruit and cool whip. In the past I always went last in line to be courteous to others, but when on a diet, if you go last, there will be fewer choices and you are less likely to make wise decisions. Eat slowly and far away from the dessert table. Drink water, and if there is a green salad fill up on that.
I think the hardest thing for me is knowing that I DO NOT HAVE TO TASTE EVERYTHING. I used to think I would hurt someone's feelings if I didn't try everything. Who cares, eat what is healthy or good, or whatever you planned to eat and don't worry about whether or not the guy (or gal) next to you made the whatever you didn't eat. They will forget by later in the same day.0 -
We have pot lucks with different church groups and I do NOT track those dinners. However, having learned portion control, I take a small scoop or a sample of a couple different items then fill around it with items like chicken breast and salad. Much different than the days I would load up my plate.
Pot lucks are just a part of our lifestyle but I have learned not to dread or fear them.0
