Master Cleanse?

Has anybody tried this before? My husbands co-worker did, and had great results but I would like some different opinions.

Its 2 tbsp organic lemon juice, 2 tbsp grade b maple syrup (dark), 1/8 tbsp cayenne pepper. You drink 7-11 of these a day, no food for 10 days. On the 11th day you drink organic orange juice only, on the 12th day you drink soup broth, 13th you eat vegetable soup, and then 14th day you are finished the cleanse.

It's not to lose weight (although husbands co-worker lost 20 lbs) it allegedly cleans out the toxins in your body.

I know a lot of you are not fans of cleanses (I'm still on the fence myself) but I would like some opinions.

Thank-you!

i think just eat as much non-processed food as you can, within your calories, lots of water and some hot water with lemon juice and your body will thank you more for it

yeah, I have done it, it is not very healthy, your starving and weak, and everyone I know who has done it gained all the weight back in a couple days.

If you want to detox I recommend you check out "The Detox Diet" by Elson M Haas M.D

    http://www.amazon.com/Detox-Diet-How-When-Cleansing/dp/0890878145

much healthier and has seasonal recommendations.

your liver and kidney already do a great job at getting rid of any toxins in the body. our body is capable of doing magnificent things to get rid of toxins itself. depriving yourself of real food for a week seems rather counterproductive to that.

drinking some lemonade with grade b syrup and cayenne pepper isn't going to do anything except make you lose a lot of water, muscle, and a little fat weight which will come right back on once you eat normal again.

if the purpose of doing this cleanse is to get rid of toxins, there's no need. There's been no scientific evidence done that any of these cleanses get rid of toxins in the body.

All your body really needs from you is to eat a diet high in fiber to keep the intestines moving and digestion occurring efficiently, eating lean meats or alternatives for protein, whole grain products for carbohydrate energy and fiber, and getting 5-10 servings of veggies and fruits a day for all your vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals

Oh part of the cleanse btw is you're supposed to drink a saltwater flush everyday and i think a laxative tea every day as well.

i'm kind of laughing (not at you OP, but the person who thought of this cleanse) because I really don't get who came up with the idea that some grade b syrup, lemonade, and cayenne pepper has magical properties to get rid of toxins.

I have done the cleanse you are talking about--once years ago when I was in high school and then once last fall. I did it for nearly the full time back in high school and it was really hard to get back into eating. Don't get me wrong, I WANTED to eat. The cleanse though had me "backed up" as soon as I was eating more than just vegetable broth, which is the food you are supposed to ease back into eating with. So for me, the "cleanse" part didn't pan out. Took a while to get all my systems running again.

When I tried the cleanse again last fall, I did it for 24 hours and then felt so horrible--fluttery heart palpitations, dizzyness, weakness--that I quit it and promised myself I would never do it again.

I agree with those who have already said that the human body does a good job of "cleansing" out our systems in the first place. Please do not try this cleanse. At best it will waste your time and energy. You will better serve your body by sticking to the tried and true, slowly but surely path to good health--eating clean and exercising.

OMG- no food for 10 days!!!:noway: That can't be more than 300 cals a day!!! In all due respect, jdelise, this sounds nuts!!! Plus, depending on your health status to start, this could be very bad for some people- depriving your muscle and nerve cells of vital electrolytes. Don't forget- your heart is the most important muscle in your body. As everyone else has said- stay away!!!!

If you really want a good cleanse ... go off of caffiene, sugar, dairy, meat, eggs, and gluten for two weeks. Have lots of fiber and get your proteins and calcium via soy products, sprouts, and legumes ... and supplement your vitamin B with nutritional yeast flakes or fortified cereal.

Not only will you be detoxed, it will be healthier and you wont have to lower your calorie intake. If you want to drink that other stuff for good measure, there's no harm in that. But good lord, get your nutrients while doing so!

And, OP, I am not referring to you - at least you are thinking long and hard before jumping into this.

There are so many "Lose Weight Quick" SCAMS and I'm afraid this is one of them.

Please consult a Doctor if you are seriously considering this. You could do permanent damage to your body.

this very cleanse is very popular here, the fattest man in my country lost 132 pounds (60kg) in 1 month with it (went from 655 to 573)... heck, that's like what i want to lose altogether... while it sounds very promising, he was constantly under supervision while doing it and there might be some "advertising exaggeration" to the whole story... they have 2 clynics and you can either stay there for a 10-day cleanse or buy the stuff and do it yourself... i was kinda considering it at the time i started my weight loss but right now i don't really see the need to do it... let us know if you have any results...

yea i know it sounds crazy but it was all over the news here... i guess it's possible to lose 132 pounds if you weigh this much but I wouldn't recommend doing it on your own :ohwell: obviously they were aiming at a world record or something, so don't do this at home if you are mortal and not a guiness record holder

I think that was supposed to be spelled "Hungry" since it's popular to do that cleanse thing. And I know a gal who did it and yes she lost weight and she felt shaky and weak the whole time. Your body doesn't really need to cleanse. That's what your liver and kidneys, etc. do.

For those who don't want to read the rotten English version of that site, here is a nice quote which is about general dieting and metabolism issues. The guy was 655 pounds and talks experience.

"I have followed terrible diets, have tried everything, made American diets, have done really everything – Chinese, Japanese-everything, honestly I got mad. My mother, poor woman, has become a Chinese healer, boiling some herbs. I was taking apples and other things for eating in my bag but nothing helped. When the metabolism is once upset, it gets slower, even the water and the salad get on my body. I have tried 22 days starvation, only with mineral water – some kilos get off but on the following day come back. You lose 30-40 kg, but the organism is disponded, the heart eats itself, the liver and the muscles too, there is no other way. The fat needs training, some kind of activity in order to burn the kilos."

    Wow, lots of reply's!

I just want to make it very clear that I'm not at all saying that I'm doing this cleanse, I just wanted to hear people's opinions on it because its something that I have been hearing a lot about lately. I know that a lot of celebrity's talk about this 'Master Cleanse' (Gwenyth Paltrow has mentioned it on her health orientated website a few times) and my husband ending up telling me a co-worker had tried it, and felt amazing afterward, making me even more curious. I went to the health food store for a few things today and the owners was talking about it, saying how great it was so when I logged on here, I figured I could get some interesting opinions on the subject.

I in no way endorse this cleanse or even know a whole lot about it , I just like learning about different things, and figured a few of you may have tried this and would have some honest feedback.

Glad to hear opinions, good and bad as I wanted honest thoughts :)

Just water is a bit extreme (not that the cleanse doesn't sound extreme in its own way) but its entirely different.
