    LOL this thread keeps re-surfacing!

invariably it leads to other mis-spellings that drive folks crazy:laugh:

there are a lot of teachers on MFP, and we HAVE to fix mistakes when they crop up so often.

example: using apostrophes for more than one of something instead of possessive, as in 3 CD's for a dollar

    Agreed.

The misuse of the apostrophe to denote possession can be worse than using it for other purposes, as in "the teacher's husbands" Unless, of course, the teacher actually happens to have multiple husbands.

"Lose" and "loose" is tough...sort of like "nose" and "noose" :grumble:

Do we need another spelling lesson? Sometimes people make mistakes. I'm sorry if that bothers you.

if the pronunciation were so different (such as nose and noose) I think it would be easier to remember, but unfortunately, lose has the "ooo" sound, and in most words, that sound IS spelled with a double "o."

Stupid English!! Not a very orderly language. Always breaking its own rules!!

I don't think that people should feel testy about spelling/punctuation errors. This isn't school, no one is being graded, and the comment was made in a light-hearted fashion.

But for some people, misspelled words and mispunctuated sentences are like nails on a chalkboard--while it's not a big enough issue to embarrass someone personally by pointing out their mistakes, there should be a place in the MFP community where we can laugh off the frustration without being made to feel guilty about it by those who do not find these issues quite as annoying.

It's all good, but we should all feel free to have a place to express ourselves in an appropriate manner.

Nicely said.... while it may be annoying to some people, the purpose of written language, in this forum, is communication, and I think we all know what someone means (through context) when they use either word.

I don't think it should offend anyone to learn the correct context of a word. :flowerforyou: We can help our minds as well as our bodies here.
