Poor Student on Own

So at almost 23, I moved out on my own finally from my Dad's. I went from being in a house where we made dinner every night, and everything was fresh vegetables, nothing processed. I easily maintained 125, whether I drank and exercised or not.

My diet now consists of oatmeal, granola bars, cereal, fruits and yogurt. I try to make my own food, because I can cook amazingly, the issue is I have NO money for it, nor time. I don't have a job and am living off loan money, which allows my budget 30 a week. I'm taking 6 classes, I'm on campus generally for 12 to 15 hours, which leaves little room for exercise. I've been maintaing 135 but I'm not happy with my weight at all. My pants are too tight at 28 inches, but I really can't afford to buy bigger ones, so my only option really is to lose weight.

The problem is that I can't seem to lose weight. Sticking to 1200 calories on my schedule is impossible. I walk at least 3 to 4 miles for my classes, and spend the rest of the day in Ceramics, Painting, or climbing stairs. So I've been trying to maintain 1500, which I didn't think was that high with how active I am throughout the day, but the scale isn't moving.

Some have said it's stress. That I'm the type to hold onto weight when stressed out. I'm thinking it may just be that my diet, although generally on the healthier side compared to my peers, is comprised mainly of high sugars.

Is anybody in a similar situation, and possible have any tips on how they've been dealing with this?

your food budget is tight, but I would add in canned tuna or chicken in water for protein and its filing. Only buy fruits/veggies that are in season. Can you get a job (pt) on campus?

    I wish you the best!!

It does seem like you are high in carbs and low on protien. Stress and lack of sleep will also cause you to put on weight. If you are not getting enough sleep and stressd out, that could be a huge contributing factor.

The other thing to make sure of is, that you are eating at regular intevals, not going to all your classes, then eating as an after thought. watch out for drink you calories too. Like cream and sugars in your coffee, jiuces, lattes' etc.

One more thing to keep in mind; The closer you are to your goal the less room you have for error.
    Best wishes.

Thanks, I forgot to mention I'm a vegetarian so that's a little more difficult. I would love a job but I don't have the time with 6 classes as I'm trying to graduate in December, thus saving money on staying another semester.

Beans and rice are both cheap and filling. I'm also a vegetarian on a budget so those two items are major staples in my pantry.
  • This sounds like a job for Crock Pot.
