so ABS are really made in the kitchen..

So abs are really made in the kitchen.. some people have told me eating "clean" has worked for them.. and that no matter how many stomach / ab workouts / exercises you do, it's all about the food you eat? I was wondering to anyone who has had great success with a flat tummy or who does have abs.. what has helped you? And what exactly is eating "clean?" Because i've been trying to eat as healthy as possible .. and still, the lower belly pooch fat is still there. I'm not a big fan of lowering my carbs, I just can't seem to do it lol but I do love my whole grains, oatmeal, ezekiel bread besides veggies & fruits. I try to stick no higher than 115g of carbs a day.. and I try to watch my sodium and sugar as well. but nothing seems to be working for me even with cardio, weights, core exercises =\ So what has helped you? Any feedback is highly appreciated!!!

Don't you like kashi and almond butter, too?0

As women, we are wired a little different than men when it comes to abs, and the lower belly pooch. Eating clean has DEFINITELY made a difference in my ab definition. When I'm eating fatty foods, that's usually when the flab comes back. Good luck to ya!0

I am on a high carb (only good carbs, tho - veggies, fruits and whole grains), low fat and low protein regime and am an extremely clean eater. By that, I mean NO processed, NO junk or fast food...only whole foods, prepared in healthy ways, and often raw. I am also a vegetarian. I have a pretty good tummy for my age (54). I walk 3-5 miles a day and strength train, but don't work particularly hard on my abs. I'd agree that the main thing is eating right. I am 5'7" and weigh 115 and have amazing energy, stamina and am RARELY sick. Feel free to add me if you'd like to take a look at my diary to see the kinds of things I eat.

ive had great success with eating clean, by this i mean natural stuff only (no boxed or bagged stuff). I do about 50/50 cardio (marathon training) and lifting (new rules of lifting for women).
I'm a vegetarian and i shoot for 120+ g of protein a day, and let carbs/fat come into play with out focusing on them. Feel free to check out my diary.
I really liked p90x's ab ripper work out and i do some of those exercises with NROLFW that i'm currently doing. But it really comes down to diet!0 -
If you are looking for abs, I suggest Lasagna. Lasagna is made in the kitchen too.

No reason to eat clean? That is certainly VERY incorrect. To the original poster, do some searches online or on MFP on the topic. You are more than welcome to PM me and I can send additional resources on this. Eating clean is absolutely essential.0 -

Seems to be that way for me too! I can be in a calorie deficit for a month, but if the foods I choose are not "clean" so to speak, I end up bloated. It may not be fat, but water weight gain causing my lower abs to be poofy will never allow a 6 pack to shine through.
Besides, eating nutritious foods gives you more than a lean body...calorie deficit might be "all" you need to lean out, but don't we all want our bodies to be healthy?0 -

Pffft he knows nothing about abs obviously, maybe he should do some research ;D0 -
Eating clean. This is one of the most nebulous concepts ever. I do like that article that you guys are linking. Its good stuff.
I will say it does take work to eliminate subcutaneous fat so that muscle definition is clearly exposed. Which is fine tuning NET calories so that A) your body is not in permanent famine mode, your body is thriving on the right amount of fuel and able to eliminate the unwanted substances, and C) your body is physically taxed through work or exercise to stay in the proper balance.
That article references discretionary calories and the USDA. The USDA (go to nutrition.gov) calls them "empty calories". This is typically foods like candy, alcohol, and other foods that have lots of calories but don't have other ancillary nutritional benefits. Both of these sources recommend minimizing the amount of "empty calories" ingested. If you want to get to the next level, it makes sense to do that.
A simple calorie deficit may not get a person all the way to the low body fat condition they are seeking. At a certain point the body will go into the famine mode, and lean tissues will be utilized for fuel in order to protect its buffer and prevent death. The human body wants to survive under almost any condition we throw at it.0 -
