Yesterday I talked to a friend about sitting still in my weight loss for a week. She suggested adding cals to my diet so yesterday I went to 1400. I burn 400 ish doing cardio (turbo Jam Cardio Party) a day. This AM I got up and out of curiosity I weighed in.I GAINED 3LBS!! Please tell me this is because I was eating to little so when I did eat my body sucked it up. What should I do??I am in week 3 of my weight loss and lost 9 so far.

a woman's weight will normally fluctuate 1-4 lbs, there was lots of sodium in the pizza so you're probably retaining some water - not a big deal, don't let it get you off track :-)0
-
I would need to see your food log for the last week. Generally you gain weight slowly like a pound or .5 pounds per day. 3 pounds in a day sounds like water retention.0
-
Don't give up - it's probably water that you retained because of the salt in the pizza. If you eat high sodium foods, you need to drink plenty of water to flush the extra sodium out of your body.0
-
Agreed, likely water, and if you are upping your calories to try to break off a plateau, I would give it two solid weeks for your body to adjust before really seeing it work or deciding it doesn't. 1 day is just one day.0

You could also be losing fat and gaining muscle over time as well but that's more than likely the water0

calm down. if you're in this for the long haul, it will come out in the wash. just stay the course.0

Water retention due to the high level of sodium in pizza.0

This happened in the span of one day? If I understood correctly, you increased your calories and the next day immediately experienced weight gain?0
-
I think it was 2 days. I made my diary public. As you can see I eat really healthy usually. Pizza is rare.0

It's not fat or muscle. It's water. It will fall off, don't panic! I always go 2 steps forward, one step back on my weight, and have since I started.0

Don't worry so much about the daily fluctuations as you should be thinking about small long term lifestyle changes. One thing to note as said above, salts and mostly hidden salts in food can lead to weight gain. Example, I used to think I was eating well by using "soy sauce." What an error, as it had so much sodium in it.
Keep up the good effort.0 -
Eat lots of veggies and protein today, and lots of water. Try eating light before bed and weigh yourself in the morning. LIke everyone else is saying you are retaining water and i know when i eat pizza or something salty the night before i weigh in im usually bloated the next morning which shows up on the scale. Weigh yourself again tomorrow morning you will most likely see a difference.0

Don't worry, this stuff happens to me when I eat out too. If I have mexican or something (yummmmm) I am like 1-2 pounds heavier the next day and I notice my hands are poofy (sooo sexy haha). It's sort of crazy, actually. Come to think of it I really need to be drinking more water.. my poor kidneys!! =P0

I'm kind of going through the same thing at the moment. I lost six pounds very quickly, waited a week, weighed and nothing happened. I've been coming in under my calorie goal consistently but the last few days I haven't eaten as well as usual. Today I weighed and I've gained, I think half a pound.
Here's what I'm going to do: go back to eating healthy food, not just staying within calories. Drink lots of water, and wait a week or two until I weigh myself again. It's really frustrating though!0 -

Remember: It takes 3500 calorie surplus over maintenance to gain 1 pound of fat. It's not fat. And it can take a week or more to drop that water, but when you do you will most likely see a drop in fat too. It's called a "stall and whoosh" and happens to almost everyone.0 -
Don't worry about it; I was the same way. I wasn't eating enough and then I found this website and started eating the recommended amount of calories and although I haven't lost tons of weight, the inches are just falling off with lots of exercise but I am gaining lots of muscle as well. Since starting I have lost almost 10lbs and should be at that goal my month end so take a deep breath and move on.0

It's probably water weight. Pizza has a ton of sodium in it and I know when I've had just one slice the scale is always up the next day. Give it a day or two, drink lots of water and you'll see the scale move in the right direction again.
There are so many things that can mess with the number on the scale.0 -
chang your dairy settings so it shows sodium, and see if that's the obvious culprit.
Don't stress over fluctuations, but drink your water and I'm sure it wasn't a real gain....0 -
So like what I've learned about weigh-ins is that it's very easy to create discrepancies on the scale. I plan weigh-ins on sundays, so I don't eat after a certain time on Saturday night. The reason being is that any food that's still in my body and being processed is going to alter what i see on the scale. In the mornings, I make sure to weigh-in after I ****. Sounds kind of immature but many people do this, and I think the rationale is obvious. I've seen 2-3 lb fluctuations because of what i just mentioned.
To kind of test my theory I did weigh-ins before and after releasing my bowels. I've also tried consuming alot of food within my daily limit towards the end of the night on Saturday (for a Sunday weigh-in).
And don't try coming after me about sweating "weight" during the night. That is just part of a mattress salesman's pitch.0 -
Did your pizza contain 10,000 calories? No? Then it's water. High sodium causes you to retain water.0

9lb in three weeks is a GOOD weight loss! It also takes a week for your body to metabolise a true weight gain or loss - fluctuations occur due to salt etc - how much extra fluid you are carrying on any given day - so don't be disheartened - carry on and yes, I can tell you from personal experience - the more calories you can eat and still lose weight - the better! Because if you practically starve yourself - your body with adjust to the low intake and then when you want to maintain it will be harder to do so and you risk piling it all back on and more! I have worked between 1200 & 1400 calories a day to shift 56lbs and I did that in 9 months - lots of people have been able to do it in half the time, but when I've done it quickly in the past I've piled back on even quicker! Slow but steady is the way to go! good luck! xxx0

I would say it has to be water....I don't think it's possible to gain or lose 3 lbs in that short of time. Drink water and lower your sodium intake and see what happens. (hard b/c I love me some pizza )0

Probaly water retention from the salt in the pizza. No big deal. Drink lots of water and weigh yourself in a week.0

I read a blog on here some time ago that really helped me 'see' that I was losing overall and forget blips of this type. If you run a spreadsheet in excel or a similar list of your weight, if you're a daily weigher then log your weight.. or whenever you way. And look at it from a month to month basis you'll see times when you gain and times when you lose, often the gain comes after a meal such as pizza but also is shortly followed by loss and more lost than the gain soon after.
So.. try and look at the bigger picture, perhaps it was the pizza but either way you'll lose more if you continue being good. I've been in a plateau situ for a couple of months but am trying to juggle my way out of it. It's hard but I know I can do it if I stay true.
Good luck and well done for your loses to date.0 -
Happens to me all the time. It's just water retention from the sodium in the pizza. I have a 4 lb fluctuation and will weigh close to loss one day and then 4 lbs heavier 3 days later.
Make sure you're getting in plenty of water, because you can cause your body to think it's dehydrated and that'll make you retain water. You can also do this if you drink more water than the day or two before, your body will hold onto it.0 -
Take a Dieutric help with water retaining you will pee like crazy.0

It was probably the sodium. Back a couple months ago, I was losing steadily when one night I ate two slices of Turkey Bacon. The next morning, I was 3 pounds up on the scale. It took me two weeks to get that three pounds off. I weigh every day which would drive some people crazy, but I do it for a reason. Since I log everything I eat, if I gain a few pounds from one day to the next, I go back to my food log to find out what could have been the culprit. Everytime it has been a high sodium food that has put me there. I know water weight and menstrual cycles can be factors as well, but I've found that my weight never fluctuates wildly from one day to the next. It's usually .2 pounds up or down and never out of that range so my food diary is my indicator of what to stay away from. Pizza has done the same thing to me as well.
If you need the extra calories, try using extra virgin olive oil, eating raw nuts or seeds, or raw nut butters. They are loaded with calories, but they are the good calories not the empty ones.0 -
Relax!!! It's just water... it may take 3 days or so to come off... My advice is to not weigh yourself again for a few days.0
