Ok so I know not to many people do this anymore but its a passion of mine and I love it! A friend of mine and myself are renting a car for two weeks and wandering aimlessly about the country. Literally!!! So we want to hear from you about anything cool, weird, interesting, fun and non touristy that you have where you live or have been. We want to see the worlds largest ball of twine kind of stuff here. So send me a comment with the location and what is there. If you are over seas that is fine if there is something you have seen in the US and want to tell me about it. I am all open ears! ( well eyes on here haha!)

We are starting in either Northwest ohio or Upstate New York. FYI =0) Look forward to your responses.

THANKS!! =0)

  • There's this girl named Carly in Raleigh, NC. She's pretty cool and not at all touristy!

Well it would help if you told us where you are starting from but one thing that is a must is download the Diners, Dives and Drive-ins app. I never had a bad meal when Guy Feiri recommends it!

    So what to see:
Satue of Liberty and Ellis Island
    Red Rocks in Colorado
    Alcatraz
    Grand Canyon
    Badlands
    Yosemtie
    YellowStone
    Key West
    some of my favorites.....

They have TONS of "The World's Largest" stuff in North Dakota. We weren't even looking for that sort of thing when we drove through and found, like six of them. Oh, and if you go to ND, you should check out the "Enchanted Highway." It's a stretch of road that has huge metal sculptures all along it. It was one of our favorite things on our last "wandering" road trip -- and we saw every state west of the Mississippi! ^.^

Marietta, GA (suburb on the north size of Atlanta) has a KFC with a 56-foot tall mechanical chicken on top. The beak opens and shuts, and the eyes move back and forth. :) It's lovingly known to Atlantans as "The Big Chicken". It totally pops up on maps when you type it in, so you should be able to find it easily if you come. Also, across the street is a cool restaurant called the "Marietta Diner", which has a monstrous menu of any kind of food you could want, for cheap (and it's GOOD!!); and cases and cases of amazing desserts lined up at the counter. It's the best cheesecake I've ever had in my life (even better than Cheesecake Factory). Get the turtle!

Then go check out Atlanta since you'll only be 10 minutes away from downtown. You can get Falcons tickets really cheap; I've never even seen a Falcons game be full. Everyone just supports college football down here. :)

Florida has Spook Hill and Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, I haven't been to Highlands Hammock in Sebring in years, but they used to have a catwalk right over a pond filled with alligators, St. Augustine is just neat and now is not tourist season. The Keys are gorgeous.

  • Oh and btw, I'm insanely jealous. I was supposed to do a trip like that when I graduated college. I WILL go someday though, and now you can help me figure out where to go! (sorry I don't have any real advice. You've already been everywhere I've been!)

Hmm.. well if you stop by Fall River, Ma you can see the oldest working carousel and the battleship. I used to live there and loved going down to the waterfront. Also, lets see, if you make it out to Lexington Kentucky you can stop inside the main library and see the world's largest ceiling clock! =) Have fun!
  • Oh and BTW you should definitely check out theme parks like Bush Gardens and Six Flags. The six flags in Agawam, MA has the Superman rollercoaster and the mind eraser. Worth checking out if they're still open. There's also a SICK amusement park near Washington, DC somewhere. There's a coaster you ride while standing up. Pretty amazing if you like coasters :o)

I did something similar a few years back. Drive until I came to a point that I could go no further, then flip a coin. North or South? East or West?

Slept in my van. Camped out. Saw rthe Pacific Ocean. Endied up lost. Had a blast.

Wow. All those great sounding places. I'm getting very envious here in sunny Queensland, Australia. I've been to the US a couple of times, but didn't get out and about to see anything other than the cities that I have visite. Having said that New York and Las Vegas were extremely interesting places..Poughkeesie - er - interesting too in its own way. I enjoyed the drive up from the airport in Jersey....New Orleans was the other one.
  • Well Iowa has Iowa's largest frying pan in Brandon Iowa, just Iowa's largest, not the world's largest lol. We also have the field of dreams where the movie was filmed in Dyersville. And there's a "haunted" house if you believe in that stuff where a whole family was brutally murdered with an ax in 1912 in Villisca, IA where people claim to see ghosts of the little girls who died.

This is what people are missing out on. I have so many say " How can you stand to be in a car that long" Well my answer is you arent. You stop and see some crazy stuff or a funny sign. You are not driving point A to B the whole point is to never find B. Just keep driving. =0) I have met some amazing people and seen places and things most only dream about. Love it!! =0)

If you go to RI I would suggest going to Newport :) You can go to some of the old mansions that are BEAUTIFUL! and depending on when you go, they might be decorated for the holidays :) They also have the cliff walk which is also very gorgeous :)

Grand Canyon is a great recommendation and someday I want to stay in a mountain cabin in North Carolina and do some gem mining. Looking forward to hearing about your trip. Sounds fun! :flowerforyou:
