A delicious blend of sugar, wax, and condom lube

We are all concerned with the number of calories that are in what we eat but it seems that our desire for a low caloric number clouds our judgment regarding exactly what it is we are eating-
one big favorite here is cool whip. Instead of using real whipped cream, which yes, has more calories, many here opt for a tub of indestructable and nutritionally empty chemicals.
What will be the overwhelming response? " but its ok in moderation" perhaps, but why not use real food in moderation?
What is in cool whip?
A delicious blend of sugar, wax, and condom lube.
Water
It's the main ingredient. But like any whipped product, Cool Whip contains a high percentage of air. At 41 cents per ounce, you're buying mostly water and air for just over twice what it would cost to whip real cream yourself.
Natural and Artificial Flavorings
Cool Whip doesn't really taste like much, but Kraft's recipe for blandness is a trade secret. That means the company doesn't have to disclose the specific flavorings.
Corn Syrup and High-Fructose Corn Syrup
Sugar by other names. Corn syrup is mostly glucose. High-fructose corn syrup is corn syrup treated with amylase and other enzymes, which together help convert glucose into fructose. A diet high in fructose is known to make lab mice fatter than other diets, so keep your research animals away from Cool Whip.
Hydrogenated Coconut and Palm Kernel Oil
Cool Whip needs to feel like whipped cream in the mouth without actually being, you know, made with cream. One cheap, reliable way to replicate the texture is by using semi- solidified plant oils. The best method of solidifying plant oils: Bubble high- pressure hydrogen through them. Of course, if not done completely, the result is trans fat. These days, Kraft avoids that.
Polysorbate 60
Polysorbates are made by polymerizing ethylene oxide (a precursor to antifreeze) with a sugar alcohol derivative. The result can be a detergent, an emulsifier, or, in the case of polysorbate 60, a major ingredient in some sexual lubricants.
Sodium Caseinate
Also common in powdered non-dairy creamer, this protein derived from cow milk helps oil and water mix.
Sorbitan Monostearate
Chemists call this stuff synthetic wax, and it's sometimes used as a hemorrhoid cream. It's one of the magical substances that keep Cool Whip from turning to liquid over time in the fridge.
Xanthan and Guar Gums
These are natural thickeners, and together they provide more viscosity than either does alone. Guar also helps retard the formation of ice crystals, another key to preserving fluffiness.

LOL...tell it like it is!!! :flowerforyou:0

Well, that explains a lot, and why this year, I have started reading more and researching more. I have tried, can't all the time though, to stop buying things that have some of these exact same additives in them. I was watching the Dr Oz , You on a Diet, show and Blaine's Low Carb, and they too mentioned the same thing. It made me want to hurl, when I found out that a lot of these chemicals are used in gas, bombs, condoms, for NASA, and most military usages....
Really scarey.
Can't be perfect, but can try to eat better.0 -
so are we saying that some of them edible things are just as good for us as whip cream? LOL:laugh:   :laugh:0

Love it - thanks for posting... I despise that stuff - I have a friend who is always onto me about making birthday cakes with real butter cream icing, as she sings the praises of Cool Whip (low cal, low sugar) but sadly she's been obese her whole adult life, and battled diabetes, etc, despite eating all this "diet" food that she loves.
Make's you think...

I have never liked Cool Whip, feels greasy in your mouth. Never figured out why people like it so much. I love Dream Whip, it is cream and acyually has a taste. Love it on SF Chocolate pudding. YUM!!!0
-
Woo Hoo..I love condom lube lmao!! :laugh:0
-
I never did like that stuff
now I can show my friends who say I should use it this thread
thanks:laugh:0 -
I knew there was a reason not to like besides its taste!
Gives me more reason to eat the real thing. All natural whipping cream! And not feel guilty.0 -
I am glad I never liked cool whip! Very interesting and amusing read!!!:laugh:0
-
Nothing like real whipped cream!!0

It is so true about manufactured foods, they contain the most hideous ingredients. Good thing you can't tell by the listing on the product or they would never sell them.
Sometimes it is just better for you to eat the real thing - just less of it.0 -
Here's some more info on one of the ingredients:
http://www.dhmo.org/
What are some of the dangers associated with DHMO?
Each year, Dihydrogen Monoxide is a known causative component in many thousands of deaths and is a major contributor to millions upon millions of dollars in damage to property and the environment. Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:
* Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
* Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
* Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
* DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
* Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
* Contributes to soil erosion.
* Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
* Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
* Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
* Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
* Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.
* Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.
* Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.
What are some uses of Dihydrogen Monoxide?
Despite the known dangers of DHMO, it continues to be used daily by industry, government, and even in private homes across the U.S. and worldwide. Some of the well-known uses of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:
* as an industrial solvent and coolant,
* in nuclear power plants,
* by the U.S. Navy in the propulsion systems of some older vessels,
* by elite athletes to improve performance,
* in the production of Styrofoam,
* in biological and chemical weapons manufacture,
* in the development of genetically engineering crops and animals,
* as a spray-on fire suppressant and retardant,
* in so-called "family planning" or "reproductive health" clinics,
* as a major ingredient in many home-brewed bombs,
* as a byproduct of hydrocarbon combustion in furnaces and air conditioning compressor operation,
* in cult rituals,
* by the Church of Scientology on their members and their members' families (although surprisingly, many members recently have contacted DHMO.org to vehemently deny such use),
* by both the KKK and the NAACP during rallies and marches,
* by members of Congress who are under investigation for financial corruption and inappropriate IM behavior,
* by the clientele at a number of bath houses in New York City and San Francisco,
* historically, in Hitler's death camps in Nazi Germany, and in prisons in Turkey, Serbia, Croatia, Libya, Iraq and Iran,
* in World War II prison camps in Japan, and in prisons in China, for various forms of torture,
* during many recent religious and ethnic wars in the Middle East,
* by many terrorist organizations including al Quaeda,
* in community swimming pools to maintain chemical balance,
* in day care centers, purportedly for sanitary purposes,
* by software engineers, including those producing DICOM programmer APIs and other DICOM software tools,
* by popular computer science professors,
* by the semi-divine King Bhumibol of Thailand and his many devoted young working girls in Bangkok,
* in animal research laboratories, and
* in pesticide production and distribution.
What you may find surprising are some of the products and places where DHMO is used, but which for one reason or another, are not normally made part of public presentations on the dangers to the lives of our family members and friends. Among these startling uses are:
* as an additive to food products, including jarred baby food and baby formula, and even in many soups, carbonated beverages and supposedly "all-natural" fruit juices
* in cough medicines and other liquid pharmaceuticals,
* in spray-on oven cleaners,
* in shampoos, shaving creams, deodorants and numerous other bathroom products,
* in bathtub bubble products marketed to children,
* as a preservative in grocery store fresh produce sections,
* in the production of beer by all the major beer distributors,
* in the coffee available at major coffee houses in the US and abroad,
* in Formula One race cars, although its use is regulated by the Formula One Racing Commission, and
* as a target of ongoing NASA planetary and stellar research.
One of the most surprising facts recently revealed about Dihydrogen Monoxide contamination is in its use as a food and produce "decontaminant." Studies have shown that even after careful washing, food and produce that has been contaminated by DHMO remains tainted by DHMO.0 -
Another reason to just eat the real thing. I love real whipped cream! I just have to keep it in moderation.0

...hehehehe....:devil:0 -
I despise cool whip. But I use cream in my alfredo sauce and had to do a double take when I looked on the label and saw my heavy whipping cream really wasn't cream at all. The grocers will pull a fast one on you if you aren't careful to watch.0

I hope to see that post in every alarmist ingredient thread, Songbyrdsweet.
While I agree that it sounds quite disgusting, the truth is that you are eating these things just about everywhere. And just because an ingredient has a long name that you don't understand, does not mean that it is dangerous for you. Sure, natural food is better for your body...but that doesn't mean this stuff is poisonous or the equivalent to lube because it contains less than 1% of very common food additives. If you plan to cut out Cool Whip because of these ingredients, you must also cut out many other foods that have the exact same additives.
Foods that also include Polysorbate 60: dill pickles, coffee whiteners/creamers, ice cream/frozen sweets. Works as a replacement for mono and diglycerides (ie: allows them to take trans fat out of their foods).
Foods that contain Sorbitan Monostearate: chocolate, other candies. Another working replacement for mono and diglycerides (ie: allows them to take trans fat out of their foods)
Foods that contain Sodium Caseinate: ice cream, sherbet, dairy creamers. "Casein, the principal protein in milk, is a nutritious protein containing adequate amounts of all the essential amino acids. People who are allergic to casein should read food labels carefully, because the additive is used in some “non-dairy” and “vegetarian” foods." -Food Safety, Center for Science and Public Interest
Foods that contain Sorbitan Monostearate : cake, candy, frozen pudding, icing. (yet another replacement for mono and diglycerides.
I'm not pro-food additives. I just don't think it's a responsible claim to liken Cool Whip to condom lube...but it does get a lot of people to read your post.0 -
Oh it'll be there! It'll be there as long as there will be alarmists! :laugh:0

when your instructors and professors pass on information are they being alarmists? When they use examples to help you get the idea, are they being alarmists?
adults can and will continue to eat whatever they want. noone has the right to dictate what another person eats except parents with their young children. Making an informed decsion is all that should be asked of parent or teacher.
This is a health related fitness site, Passing on information regarding a certain food is not being an alarmist. If after reading the ingredients in cool whip you decide to continue eating it, good for you,
My point was to consider using real food and not processed food. If you find that alarming, deal with it.0 -

Well, butter certainly tastes better and besides the closer to straight from the natural source you can get the better, at least our bodies can process the fats in butter, unlike cool whips heart clogging ingredients like palm and coconut oils .
And besides that, what is wrong with cutting out ALL other foods with these ingredients. IF everyone did it would force the marketers and makers of these products to look in another direction.0 -

Anyone who portrays normal substances as being harmful or only having one unusual use is alarmist. None of my professors take water out and say "BE CAREFUL THIS CAN BE ACIDIC!!!!!!!" even though water can act as an acid in a chemical reaction.0 -

I dont want a back and forth with you, but stick to the facts,. We are not talking about water.
And if you think HFCS is "natural" because it came from a natural source before "man" ran it through a factory and changed its chemical compostion, you are just arguing to argue. You are smarter than that.0 -
Wow Dave, way to start it up!
Maybe I read it wrong but I think you and song actually are agreeing, she was responding to another post calling her an alarmist.
Anyway, it is a health website and everyone here is at a different stage whether new or an old pro at it passing along information on foods and how bad the stuff marketers claim to be a healthier choice is great. People need to realize that food companies are in the business of making money and they will use whatever tactic works! IT disgusts me everytime they show all that processed crap on the Biggest Loser because that is exactly the kind of crap we need to get away from.
I thought the reference to condom lube was funny, although the lube is probably healthier than the cool whip :laugh:0 -
Dave, a chemical reaction doesn't make something harmful.0

No, I was being facetious and agreeing with the post about THIS being alarmist.
Dihydrogen monoxide is WATER. But see how you can make it look scary?0 -
Ok, thought I might have read it wrong but point taken everyone....
eat that crap if you want
don't eat it if you don't
educate yourself!
