What gets you up in the morning?

Hi Guys,

I really tend to lack motivation... quite often. I get depressed quite easily and am a comfort eater... I used to get up at 0515 every morning and go for a run with my friend, but then I moved away and don't have anyone to run with... so there's no actual REQUIREMENT to get up early... So I tend to hit snooze EVERY DAY...

What gets you up in the morning? What keeps you getting up when it's really hard/dark and cold/raining or you're just damn tired cos you went to bed late/couldn't sleep???

Need help... :(

Honestly what helps me sometimes is going to those motivational pictures threads printing some out and putting them right where I can see them when I go to turn off my alarm in the morning. Just a little reminder to get up and get going.

Aside from my crying children...just the desire to treat my body,God's temple, the way it should be treated. " my body is not my own, I was bought at a price. therefore I WILL honor God with my body"

While I'm not a runner, several years ago I made the decision to exercise in the a.m. for the simple reason that for me, with my job and life, if I try to fit it in at the end of the day, it just won't happen. So, I get up at 4:45 twice each week for Spin, andd 5:30 every other weekday, and by 7:00 on the weekends. What started me on this path? My mantra was, "fit or fat?" When my alarm went off and I wanted to shut it up, I would ask myself, "Fit or fat?" It worked for me. I've been a morning exerciser for the better part of the last decade.
  • The only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning is the need to pee. No one could possibly confuse me with a morning person so I don't even try to get up and run in the morning. I am a night runner. My stomach is full, and I am tired but it is the only way I get the workout in.

Seems like a good reason to me.
Just do it, put your big girl panties on and get up. I am up at 4am almost every morning cause most days if I don't run or lift weights then then I don't get to.
There is no trick you can play on yourself, you just gotto want to do it!

I am a morning person, so I don't have a hard time getting up (except, I feel crappy getting up by thinking about coming to work). But I have a hard time staying awake at night

the need to pee usually. :)

But when I started this, my MAIN motivator was ...to see if I *could* get up and out of bed for a walk every single morning. I found that it takes longer to talk myself out of it than it does to get dressed.

I only sleep a few hours a night so my eyes open around 2-3 am. It sucks.

The thought of just laying there is what motivates me to get up. This probably doesn't help but I also am motivated to get up and moving because I want to make sure that I do get my workout in. I sometimes don't have time after work so I make the time in the morning.

    Good luck.

you say there's "no actual requirement" for you to be up early but what if you mentally made it a requirement? schedule that 1/2 run in everyday and tell yourself it HAS to happen at ___ time every day.

you could also find yourself a fun task to do after your workout session so you'll be like "hmm if I go to the gym now.. after I can do ____" or "i really want to ___ today but I can only do it after I go to the gym"..

in the beginning you just have to make it a routine, eventually it'll become second nature to you. good luck! :)

    Simple. I hate getting up.

So I put my alarm clock on the otherside of my room.

It goes off, I physically have to get out of bed and walk across my room to turn it off. Then I'm only a few steps from the shower so I just keep going :)

I suffer from the same trouble. I can pee and go straight back to bed.

A good suggestion is great music (this works for me sometimes).

Another thing that works for me (sometimes) is deciding upon something that I actually love to do and allowing myself to do that in the mornings (either as a reward or just to get a jump start). For example, since cooking is a luxury for me, I tell myself that I can make that low fat banana bread, IF, I get up before X time. Then I can exercise while it is cooking.

Good luck and let me know if you find anything that works. Otherwise, I lay in bed till the last possible minute and then get up and go to work (which leads to lots to do after work)! I would really like to change my cycle.

So glad you asked this question. I am not a morning person or I'm just a lazy person and could be a morning person. Reading the responses has motivated me to try harder. I will lay my exercise clothes out the night before and have a plan in place. eg. Good weather =outside walk, rain = Dvd or exercise bike.

The only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning is the need to pee.

The honesty in this one cracked me right up:)
  • I am not a morning person and I've never been successful in trying to turn myself into one. When I wake up in the morning the only thing that gets me out of bed is the thought of a nice warm shower...not going outside and exerting myself right away! I fit my exercise in at night. I have three kids so I do it when they are in bed. I have been taking dance classes and they are either 6-8 pm or 8-10 pm. It works great for me. I go about 5 nights per week.

His name is peep. He was supposed to be a Hen when we bought him as a tiny chick. And if he isn't enough our dog Casey feels he should be fed at 5 AM. Our children feed the dogs so he sits at the bottom of the stairs and....... WOOOOO WOOOOOOOHHHHH. Until someone tells him to stop or feeds him. ( He hasn't figured out the more he does it the longer it takes to get his breakfast.) None the less, I tend to exercise at night. No one to interrupt me, kids, dogs, husband...... chickens. And every time I try to get up really early to exercise, I just can't get up. The alarm mysteriously doesn't go off. Or it goes of in the PM and not the AM, while I shut it off I curse the engineers that make the AM and PM so tiny!
Maybe you should see if there is a group that runs in your area that you could join in with. I know our rec center has a walking group every week! Good Luck!
  • Like a couple of the other replies, if I dont do it early it doesnt get done. I get my workout clothes and my work clothes out the night before so I dont wake the rest of the household scrambling around - not to mention being late getting out the door. I also have to set my alarm a ways away so I HAVE to get up to get it. My favorite was the 'to not be fat or lazy' reply - that IS why we do this afterall! Why dont you find a new running partner? Or go to a gym with classes where you get to know people. I have instructors and gym friends who give me grief if I dont come which helps a lot. I even have a female friend (purely friends only, really!) I call my gym wife cause she keeps me inline and motivated to come to class. I cant say it has gotten easier for me to get up at 4:30 over the last couple years, but its more tolerable and the results are well worth it
