Once in a blue, like when I'm away from my gym, I do burpees

    What exactly are they?

I think I might do a similar one... when I'm limited on space I do burpees, geckos, sprinters, squats, lunges, pressups and situps in rapid succession repeatedly as it requires little space and gets a real burn going especially from getting up and down so much and using large muscle groups rapidly! :)
  • What baffles me about these convicts building big muscles in prison is how the hell are they able to build muscles on the food they are given? I doubt they are fed the amount of protien needed to sustain that much muscle.

I've never been to prison, nor jail.. but something tells me that they're arent fed very well.

It kind of blows the whole concept of diet, calorie surplus out of the water

No, but I hear it's best to alternate arms when shanking someone so you don't get uneven muscle tone in your arms.

I have used them. used to watch the guys on the rec yard and the workouts they do are something else, seem to work well and a nice change up. burpees are great for full body, and planking on the ground is a whole core strength builder. Get like you're gonna do a push up, then rest on ur elbows instead of full arms stretched out and keep your body off the ground in a straight line..tough and will make you shake but builds your core well.
And we are talkin about guys that use every book they have in a bag for weights in their cell..lol.

Maybe there's some dude in prison selling protein powder on the sly. "Hey, you want some coke? No? Cigarettes? No? Heroin? No? I got what you need, pure whey..."

Well, I work in the prison system and their food def isnt the best. but I'll tell you, they surely figure out how to get some weight lifting in! You would be surprised the stuff that is used for weights! LOL
  • They're fed chicken a lot. My brother was in prison, he bulked up pretty quick because most dinners consisted of chicken breasts and vegetables. They're actually fed pretty well depending on what sort of facility they go to. And there's not much to do if you're not on some kind of work detail besides work out and read.

Whew! I hate burpees! I guess my bootcamp workouts would probably be some of that kind of stuff. It can feel brutal!

Dudes in prison can work and buy more food, and I think also protein powders... AND I've also heard there is a very lucrative steroid market in the 'joint.

But thats the thing. I've seen some big *kitten* dudes! a chicken breast has at most around 25grams protein. a dude weighing over 200lbs would have to eat at most 8 chicken breasts each day! And I know thats not a luxury any of those guys have inside

There's enough protein that gets tossed around when they throw sack lunches of bologna and glow-in-the-dark turkey meat. We used to boil them to get rid of the fat, then make creative dishes like carne asada. Though, since seasoning is limited, what we get through commissary is what gets thrown into the mix.

But yes, prison routines are basically circuits of using large muscle groups in succession. Burpees, push ups, pull ups, curls, tricep dips, mountain climbers, squats and prison lunges are all basic routines.

I have spent lots of time at the county jail (employee not a resident) and I will tell you that the inmates are fed a well balanced diet with dessert too! So for the workouts, after being in a 5x9 cell there is not much to do but read, write, or work out. I took care of a inmate that did 1000 pushups a day. This was a mind blowing thing for me. I could not imagine doing a 1000 every day. I think them working out is just something to pass the time.

Sorry to derail your thread, dude. Wasnt my intention

Yeah I've heard of people doing like 7,000 push-ups and 15,000 sit-ups a week. Courteous also to where these guys get there nutrition from.

I was just reading an article on this at Mark's Daily Apple.com. Sounds like a great at home workout in the winter!

I wish my son was in one of these prisons. The boxes that the meat at Ely Max comes in is marked, "Not for Human Consumption."

I suppose they get plenty of rest, too, and that's a big factor in building muscle.

I am so sorry to hear that. We are in Texas and they raise the beef for the inmates. The good cuts get sold to the public and the lesser quality is kept to feed the inmates. With that being said...the price of organic beef is crazy ...so the inmates here can at least eat meat that is made for human consumption.
  • Each facility is certainly different. The place m'love is at does not feed them well....at all! I've tried their food when I've gone to visit him (they can have their lunch tray delivered to them at the visit). My last visit with him, one of the things on his tray was pineapple...I figured i'd try it, 'cuz really, how can you go wrong with pineapple? It was BITTER!!!!! Not sweet....not sour....BITTER!! *smh* Not to mention, he's Muslim, and where he is, the Muslims only get one halal (Islamically compliant; i.e. no pork or pork products) meal a day, they have to have vegetarian meals for the other two meals.

However, he's a Cali inmate, and in California, they can receive one package (within a certain weight limit) eery quarter with stuff purchased from approved prison vendors, so when it's time for me to send him a package, and he asks me to send him vitamins and creatine.
