IN NEED OF DISTRACTIONS!!!

Hi all, I have been battling binge eating disorder for about 2 months now. I have been reading things on the forums, and I have heard a lot of people say that once they realize when their moments of weakness are and what triggers them, they are able to find things to do that distract them and stop the bingeing. I have recognized that when I have a lot of homework to do (which is pretty much every night) I tend to give up before I even start and binge eat instead. Many have suggested taking a walk, but I feel guilty when I do that, because it takes up a lot of time which I could be using to do homework (and its starting to get really cold outside :) Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do when the urge to binge strikes? any suggestions or other advice about BED would be greatly appreciated.

Don't keep the food that you binge eat on around the house. Get rid of all the high calorie/empty calorie foods in the house. Hope that helps some.

I binge while doing homework too. Usually drinking something and chewing gum helps.
  • Have some fruit or maybe some carrot sticks or something like that. You can eat all of that you want and not feel bad about it!!

Something that helps me is to keep the high calorie/high fat food out of sight. Oh, I'll know that I have a quart of ice cream in the freezer or enough taquitos to put my in a taquito coma, but as long as I don't see them, it's a heck of a lot easier for me to stay away from them. Balance this with readily available or preprepared fresh veggies so that when boredom strikes, you know you have an easy and healthy option already available to you (because I know that if I don't prepare them beforehand, then those taquitos are starting to look really easy and really easy + unhealthy = not good.)
  • Keep cut up and ready to go fresh veggies and munch on those when you feel the urge to eat? Everytime you think you want to eat do 20 sit ups or jumping jacks or push ups? I like to munch on things when i'm watching tv....popcorn is a good snack if you get it without the butter and 94% fat free! Good luck!

Hey, I totally get where you're coming from - I have the same problem with HW :( I don't know if this will work for you but it helps me. When I get that out of control feeling and I don't want to go to the gym or take a walk because I feel guilty too, what works for me is:

I'll clean or organize - if my school stuff is disorganized, I'll take the time to get it all organized and if my room is messy - I'll take the time and clean. I usually put on some music, dance around, through in a load of laundry, and then clean.

I realize it is 'wasting' as much time as if I went to the gym but it makes me feel more in control and it helps.

After I spend a lot of time reorganizing, I'll usually do something like change the sheets on my bed and then take a shower.

I feel so much more relaxed that I can sit down and do a little bit of work and then get to sleep calmly - so I didn't get a bunch of work done but its better than feeling anxious and out of control.

    I hope this helps :)
