IBS/Dairy/Lactose Intolerance?

I wondered if anyone has any ideas on my issue, on a morning I usually have a cup of tea and some cereal (corn based, the problem is 10 times worse with wheat based) but I found that I can't exercise until around 2 hours after breakfast because I have acid, sickness and feel bloated. I tried switching to lactose free milk but the problem didn't disappear.

A year or so ago I tried to work out what was causing my stomach problems. I cut out gluten for a few weeks but nothing changed so I tried cutting out all dairy and found I actually got worse. It's getting to the point where I can cope with the bad stomach on a daily basis but I feel rotten on a morning and I'm frequently hungry (I can eat breakfast at 8am and then be feeling sick and dizzy with hunger pains by 10.30) My doctor years ago diagnosed me with IBS but apart from giving me some peppermint tablets didn't offer any help and I don't fancy going again.

I know what you mean... I also have issues with diary(plus a stomach that just hates life some days!) and it sucks.

I'd personally cut out the cereal(both corn and what based) and just try some plain toast with tea and see if that has any affect.

I'd also try a pro-biotic tablet called Acidophilus. It will help get the bacteria balance in your digestive track back in line.. Greek yogurt also has pro-biotics and can help.
  • Why not try working out before breakfast? Then keep a diary of how your stomach feels everyday. (I assume you keep a diary of your food on here.) Then you can find which foods cause the worst stomach issues. I have IBS and trigger foods are different for everyone. I cannot eat anything that is high in fat, red meat, fried or greasy. I also have issues with dairy, but they aren't that bad so I keep it in my diet, just not as much as I used to. Its all about finding your trigger foods and avoiding them. It took me a long time to find all my trigger foods, but now that I know them I can lead a normal life.

Hiya thanks to both of you.

I'll take a look at that supplement thanks :) I never looked greatly into things like that and tended to avoid toast cos I know white bread isn't too great and brown just makes me ill. I'll give it a go though. I don't work out before breakfast simply because with feeling hungry a lot I'm already pretty starving by 8am and my gym only opens at 7.30, I couldn't imagine working out on an empty stomach without feeling pretty ill. It's taking a while to find my trigger foods I know mushrooms are a big no no which sucks because I really REALLY love them, also any white/cream sauces are bad.

Well I tried a different diet this morning, white tea without milk and 2 slices of toast with jam (no butter) so far I'm feeling the same stomach cramps and lot of rumbling.
  • Well keep your diary and tomorrow try cutting out the bread and eat an egg instead? Then on Saturday try cutting out the tea or have decaf maybe? I know alot of us are sensitive to caffeine.
I know it takes a long time, but it will all be worth it in the end when you can have weeks without having a flare up. Or when you know you are going to eat something that is going to bother you so you can medicate yourself ahead of time. I take my meds only when I know I am going to have red meat. (Which is only maybe 4-6 times per year.) And I will take them for about 3 days and then I am fine.

I think you need to work out whether you are intolerant to anything in particular, so i think you need to go back to your doctor. There are so many things which could set you off - yeast could be one option, but there are others.
  • Have you heard of a paleo diet? also referred to as the caveman diet. Basically it is going on the theory that the human body has not physically evolved since the paleolithic times, where you ate what you could hunt and gather. This didn't include any grains, as they are a pretty much a farmed plant rather than a freely growing one. Corn is also a grain... Doesn't include dairy or legumes. So really you can eat all the vegatables, fruit and lean meat you like - including eggs, plus nuts and seeds. Canola/vegetable oil is out, but olive/walnut/flaxseed oil are allowed. Also no legumes - this includes peanuts which are heavily linked to allergies. Also cuts out all processed sugars and salt.

Some research is showing that a paleo diet is really good for people with digestive issues, allergies, skin conditions and asthma.... anyways I have just started on it myself, and after an initial adjustment period of a couple of days, am finding my body feels less bloated... Just thought I would mention it :)

Oh wow thank you :) I'll look into all of that and see how it goes and let you know what worked.

    Thanks :)

For IBS it's different for everyone, I can't eat too many beans and nuts (kind of annoying as I am a vegetarian and I used to eat HEAPS of chickpeas). I heard a low-FODMAP diet is quite successful for a lot of people (google it) otherwise an elimination diet can be useful if done properly.
